The purpose of this study was to investigate the contact angles and wettability of conventional dental stones and improved dental stones and newly developed dental stones on several impression materials. Materials included in this study were several dental stones and newly developed dental stone ; 2 type III stones (Snow Rock, New Diastone), 6 type IV stones(Crystal Rock, Vel Mix, Fuji Rock, Tuff Rock, Resin Rock and newly developed dental stone) and 1 type V stone (Die Keen). Contact angles on the impression materials were measured with contact angle measuring device. Ten specimens for each material, total 180 specimens were made on void entrapment model. The two impression materials (Handae, GC) were used to produce 9 groups of die stone casts form void entrapment model. Voids in the stone casts were counted under a stereoscopic microscope. The grad for the reproduction ability of each materials on the void entrapment model was calculated from the casts by one examiner. From the experiment, the following results were obtained : 1. The newly developed stones showed smallest contact angle. Type III dental stone had larger contact angles than type IV and V stones. Contact angle was much affected by the impression materials. 2. Resin containing die materials such as Tuff Rock and Resin Rock had smallest void number than any other groups. 3. In comparing reproduction parameters, Tuff Rock and Resin Rock presented superior results, while Vel Mix showed lowest reproduction ability.

This paper is the second paper among two papers which constitute the paper about the structural design of a dental implant. This paper completed the test drafting for the structural model of the new dental implant whose structural performance was confirmed and verified through the comparative structural analysis carried out in the first paper. This paper finished the structural design of a dental implant by manufacturing the dental implant using CNC machines and so forth on the basis of the completed draft and finally by evaluating the machining condition of the dental implant. The drafting work was performed using MDT(Mechanical Desk Top). The manufacturing work was carried out using CNC machines, general purpose milling machine, and Wire EDM. The manufactured surface condition of the dental implant was evaluated and confirmed finally using an electron microscope. As a result of evaluation, a testing dental implant with very good condition was designed and manufactured.
PURPOSE. This study was performed to evaluate the osteogenic potential of 3mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) and niobium oxide containing Y-TZPs with specific ratios, new (Y,Nb)-TZPs, namely YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 discs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 3Y-TZP, YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 discs (15 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness) were prepared and their average surface roughness ($R_a$) and surface topography were analyzed using 3-D confocal laser microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mouse pre-osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells were seeded onto all zirconia discs and evaluated with regard to cell attachment and morphology by (CLSM), cell proliferation by PicoGreen assay, and cell differentiation by Reverse-Transcription PCR and Quantitative Real-Time PCR, and alkaline phosphatase (Alp) staining. RESULTS. The cellular morphology of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts was more stretched on a smooth surface than on a rough surface, regardless of the material. Cellular proliferation was higher on smooth surfaces, but there were no significant differences between 3Y-TZP, YN4533, and YN4533/Al20. Osteoblast differentiation patterns on YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 were similar to or slightly higher than seen in 3Y-TZP. Although there were no significant differences in bone marker gene expression (alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin), Alp staining indicated better osteoblast differentiation on YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 compared to 3Y-TZP. CONCLUSION. Based on these results, niobium oxide containing Y-TZPs have comparable osteogenic potential to 3Y-TZP and are expected to be suitable alternative ceramics dental implant materials to titanium for aesthetically important areas.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of shear bond strength between various percentage of reused dental ceramic alloys and porcelain. One hundred specimens were made of one semiprecious alloy and three nonprecious alloys. Each alloy group was subdevided into five groups according to the additional precentage of new alloy. Group I specimens were made of 100% new alloy and served as the control of the investigation. Group II specimens were made of once-cast alloy with 75% new alloy. Group III specimens were made of once-cast alloy with 50% new alloy. Group IV specimens were made of once-cast alloy with 25% new alloy. Group V specimens were made of 100% recast alloy. Five specimens were made for each group of the alloy combinations. The test specimens were prepared by firing porcelain doughnuts on the alloy rod surface, and invested in dental stone. Bond strengths were measured by Instron universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The fractured surface of metal specimens were examined under the scanning electron microscope. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of Albabond showed no significant difference between control group and reused alloy group. 2. The shear bond strength of reused alloy groups of nonprecious alloys were lower than that of control groups. 3. The shear bond strength between porcelain and metal in semiprecious alloy was higher than in nonprecious alloys 4. In nonprecious alloys. Rexillium III showed the highest bond strength value and Excelalloy showed the lowest shear bond strength value. 5. Regardless of the type of alloys and additional proportion of new alloys, scanning electron microscope photographs of the fracture surface between alloy and porcelain revealed simillar semiprecious alloy and nonprecious alloys.
Objectives: This study evaluated the penetration depth of 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) into root dentinal tubules and the influence of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). Materials and Methods: Twenty freshly extracted anterior teeth were decoronated and instrumented using Mtwo rotary files up to size 40, 4% taper. The samples were randomly divided into two groups (n = 10), that is, conventional syringe irrigation (CSI) and PUI. CHX was mixed with Rhodamine B dye and was used as the final irrigant. The teeth were sectioned at coronal, middle and apical levels and viewed under CLSM to record the penetration depth of CHX. The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: The mean penetration depths of 2% CHX in coronal, middle and apical thirds were $138{\mu}m$, $80{\mu}m$ and $44{\mu}m$ in CSI group, respectively, whereas the mean penetration depths were $209{\mu}m$, $138{\mu}m$ and $72{\mu}m$ respectively in PUI group. Statistically significant difference was present between CSI group and PUI group at all three levels (p < 0.01 for coronal third and p < 0.001 for middle and apical thirds). On intragroup analysis, both groups showed statistically significant difference among three levels (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Penetration depth of 2% CHX into root dentinal tubules is deeper in coronal third when compared to middle and apical third. PUI aided in deeper penetration of 2% CHX into dentinal tubules when compared to conventional syringe irrigation at all three levels.
Electrochemical characteristics of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys coated with HA/TiN by using magnetron sputtering method were studied. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr(3, 7, 10 and 15wt%) were 10 times melted to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace and then homogenized for 24hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were cut and polished for corrosion test and coating, and then coated with HA/TiN, respectively, by using DC and RF-magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface and coated layer were carried out by using optical microscope(OM), field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and X-ray diffractometer(XRD). The electrochemical characteristics were examined using potentiodynamic (-1,500 mV~ + 2,000 mV) and A.C. impedance spectroscopy(100 kHz ~ 10 mHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed needle-like structure. In case of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys, a-peak was increased with increasing Zr content. The thickness of TiN and HA coated layer showed 400 nm and 100 nm, respectively. The corrosion resistance of HA/TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys were higher than that of the non-coated Ti-30TaxZr alloys, whic hindicate better protective effect. The polarization resistance($R_p$) value of HA/TiN coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed $8.40{\times}10^5{\Omega}cm^2$ which was higher than that of non-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys.
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of commercially available calamansi soju and other alcoholic beverages on the microhardness and erosion of resin restorations. Methods: In this study, we evaluated the effects of Calamansi soju, Chamisul fresh, Cass fresh, and Gancia Moscato D'asti on resin restorations. Jeju Samdasoo and Coca-Cola were used as negative and positive controls, respectively. Specimens to be immersed in the beverages were manufactured using composite resin according to the product instructions. In each group, the surface microhardness was measured using a surface microhardness instrument before and after immersion for 5, 15, 30, and 60 minutes. The pattern of change in the surface of the composite resin was observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Paired t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and repeated measures ANOVA were performed to compare the surface microhardness of the specimens, and the Tukey test was used as a post hoc test. Results: The pH of all beverages except Jeju Samdasoo was <5.5, which is the critical pH that can induce erosion. The difference in surface microhardness of the composite resin before and after immersion for 60 minutes was significant in all groups. In particular, the largest change in surface microhardness was observed in the calamansi soju group. In the SEM analysis, loss of composite resin was observed in all groups except the Jeju Samdasoo group, and rough surfaces with pores of various sizes were observed. Conclusion: In this study, all beverages except Jeju Samdasoo decreased the microhardness of the composite resin surface, and it was confirmed that calamansi soju had the greatest change.

The setting of dental hygiene clinics is very important to dental hygiene education, which is the place not only to educate students but also to care clients. The purpose of this study is to provide basic research material for improvement of dental hygiene care system in dental hygiene clinics by analyzing the client satisfaction. A questionnaire survey by means of self-entry method was conducted to find out satisfaction of the client, who was visited to the dental hygiene clinics in the department of dental hygiene, Yonsei University. An analysis of frequency, one way ANOVA and T-Test were performed through SPSS 12.0K program. 1. Most clients were mainly composed of students in Wonju College of Medicine. 2. The clients visited for scaling(85.8%) and oral examination(9.73%) were much than treatment(4.42%). 3. Clients aged 21 to 25 were relatively lower in satisfaction with the facilities, system, attitude than any other ages. 4. The dental hygiene students are the lowest group in satisfaction with the facility, system, attitude than medical and nursing students. 5. The clients satisfaction with dental hygiene clinics was decreased in reverse proportion to visiting frequency. 6. Most of the clients pointed out the problems of appointment system(54.0%) and fee(23.0%), which should be improved than any other operation conditions. 7. Most of the clients were not satisfied with chair time and pain during care. 8. Most clients recognized to receive the better care service than other dental offices(81.3%). Especially, they paid attention to oral health education using phase-contrast microscope. 9. Many clients were dissatisfied with facilities of the dental hygiene clinics(71.7%). The problems of appointment system(54.0%) and chair time of dental hygiene care services(63.6%) had also inconvenienced to clients. The dental hygiene clinics in school play a crucial role in dental hygiene education to foster the student to be competent as a professional dental hygienist in the future. Therefore, well-organized dental hygiene care program based on dental hygiene process is essential. It is also required to improve the environment of dental hygiene clinics including facilities, appointment system and fee etc.
Objectives: Phytic acid (IP6), a naturally occurring agent, has been previously reported as a potential alternative to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). However, its effect on adhesion to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)-treated dentin and its interactions with NaOCl have not been previously reported. Thus, in this study, the effects of IP6 on resin adhesion to NaOCl-treated dentin and the failure mode were investigated and the interactions between the used agents were analyzed. Materials and Methods: Micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) testing was performed until failure on dentin treated with either distilled water (control), 5% NaOCl, or 5% NaOCl followed with chelators: 17% EDTA for 1 minute or 1% IP6 for 30 seconds or 1 minute. The failed specimens were assessed under a scanning electron microscope. The reaction of NaOCl with EDTA or IP6 was analyzed in terms of temperature, pH, effervescence, and chlorine odor, and the effects of the resulting mixtures on the color of a stained paper were recorded. Results: The µTBS values of the control and NaOCl with chelator groups were not significantly different, but were all significantly higher than that of the group treated with NaOCl only. In the failure analysis, a distinctive feature was the presence of resin tags in samples conditioned with IP6 after treatment with NaOCl. The reaction of 1% IP6 with 5% NaOCl was less aggressive than the reaction of the latter with 17% EDTA. Conclusions: IP6 reversed the adverse effects of NaOCl on resin-dentin adhesion without the chlorine-depleting effect of EDTA.
In order to examine the anticariogenic effect after fluoride varnish was applied to sound enamel and artificial caries enamel, anterior teeth of healthy cattle were used and divided into four groups such as group 1 (sound enamel), group 2 (application of fluoride varnish to sound enamel), group 3 (artificial caries enamel) and group 4 (application of fluoride varnish to artificial caries enamel). Remineralization on the surface of enamel and changes of crystalline structure after demineralization were observed by using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Quantitative analysis of Ca and P was measured by using the energy dispersive X-ray spectrophotometer (EDS). The following conclusions were obtained: 1)Surface pattern of enamel was the roughest in group 3 due to the defects caused by porosity and microcracks. Group 4, group 1 and group 2 were followed in order; 2) It was found that pattern of crystalline structures in a group of application of fluoride varnish and a group of no application showed bigger change in artificial caries enamel than that in sound enamel. In other words, groups 4 and 1 showed a similar pattern; 3) The contents of Ca and P were higher in groups of application of fluoride varnish (group 2 and group 4) than in groups of no application of fluoride varnish (group 1 and group 3). Taken results of this study together, in the case of application of fluoride varnish, crystalline structure was changed by remineralization even in the sound enamel. In particular, porous structures showed a smooth and uniform pattern due to the recalcification in the artificial caries enamel. In addition, according to results of EDS analysis, the contents of Ca and P were increased and it had great anticariogenic effects which inhibit decalcification of sound enamel and artificial caries enamel.
