Objectives: This study aimed to provide the measures for improving the self-directed learning ability and the reference data for substantializing the educational programs by verifying the main factors affecting the self-directed learning ability of dental hygiene students in reality when the learners' autonomy is emphasized than ever. Methods: From June 20 to July 4, 2022, an online survey was conducted targeting total 218 dental hygiene students. The collected data was analyzed by using the SPSS Program Version 22.0. Results: First, in the results of analyzing differences in detailed items of self-directed learning ability according to the general characteristics, the 'students who entered the department of dental hygiene by considering their aptitude and interest' showed higher results than the 'students who entered the department by considering their high school record'. Second, when the academic efficacy, study immersion, and problem-solving ability of dental hygiene students were higher, their self-directed learning ability was also high. Third, the factor that had the greatest effect on self-directed learning ability of dental hygiene students was problem-solving ability, which was followed by academic efficacy and study immersion. Conclusion: Putting together the results above, in order to cultivate the problem-solving ability of dental hygiene students, it would be necessary to operate the problem-solving-centered simulation course that could foster critical thinking, interactions with others, and creative approach and solution to problems in dental medical site. It would be also possible to improve their academic efficacy by applying the learning mentoring & one-to-one learning counseling program, and also strengthening proper feedbacks for learners. Moreover, the study immersion could be strengthened by developing and operating the emotion-based learning motivation program & learning coaching program through the process of verifying the potential and growth needs of learners, exploring one's own resources through learning diagnosis/introspection, and exploring the career-related vision for strengthening the learning motivation, which could have positive effects on the improvement of self-directed learning ability.
The realistic problem about the dental hygiene education in our country is what the correlation between theoretical education and clinical education is short, and what the systematically clinical-practice education is failing to be realized. In order to solve this problem, the aim is to introduce preceptor and to present necessity in order to apply preceptor to the practice education for dental hygiene department. 1. What is the largest in the difference between the observation experience and the performance experience by element in clinical-performance activity is the patience-care service sphere(P < .001). 2. A hospital with the highest observation-practice experience level in children with the observation experience by hospital was in order of K hospital, Y hospital, H hospital, B hospital, and A hospital(P < .001, P < .01). 3. A hospital was the highest in the difference of the performance-practice experience level by hospital. And, the next was in order of H hospital, Y hospital, K hospital, and B hospital(P < .001, P < .01). 4. As for recognition on importance of clinical-practice activity in dental hygienists, the dental hygienists with more than the third year were indicated to be the highest than the dental hygienists with less than the 3rd year among 58 dental hygienists. Given seeing the results of this study, the more systematic and educational clinical-practice environment will need to be improved by suggesting a role of preceptor and to seek for a plan for application in the clinical-practice education.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet(NTAPPJ) on surface properties and Streptococcus mutans disinfection of denture base resin. Methods : Self-cured denture base resin (Jet denture repair resin, Lang dental Mfg, co., USA) was used to make specimen($12mm{\times}2mm$). To observe surface change before and after plasma process, surface roughness and contact angle were measured. For sterilization experiments, the surfaces of specimens were treated with nitrogen and air NTAPPJ for 1 minute after S. mutans was inoculated on the material surfaces. Results : Before plasma process, surface roughness of denture base resin was $0.21{\mu}m{\pm}0.02{\mu}m$. After air and nitrogen NTAPPJ process, surface roughness was $0.19{\mu}m{\pm}0.03{\mu}m$ and $0.18{\mu}m{\pm}0.01{\mu}m$ respectively. There was no significant difference(p>0.05). Contact angle of control group without plasma process was $83.81^{\circ}{\pm}3.14^{\circ}$, while after plasma treatment, contact angles of air NTAPPJ and nitrogen NTAPPJ groups were $63.29^{\circ}{\pm}2.27^{\circ}$ and $46.68^{\circ}{\pm}5.82^{\circ}$ respectively. The result showed a significant decrease in contact angle after plasma process(p<0.05). Compared to the control group 6020.33(CFU/mL) without plasma process, CFU decreased significantly after air NTAPPJ 90.75(CFU/mL) and nitrogen NTAPPJ 80.25(CFU/mL) treatment(p<0.05). Conclusions : It was considered that NTAPPJ can be used for denture disinfection without changing surface properties of materials.
Objectives : In order to manage to reformative tendency of the educational whole with change request of dental hygienics education which is diversificated and professionalized the manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket which is educated with from much dental hygiene is become accomplished, so far also the recognition which relates with the manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket of dental hygiene students there is not researched. The present research carried out the practice evaluation with the target of students of a dental hygiene department, who finished a manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket, analyzed and investigated the material, reported its result, and enforced a research. Methods : This research selected students of 6 dental hygiene departments located in the Daegu Gyeongbuk region, who have manufacturing experience of a temporary resin jacket, by a convenient sampling method, and then a questionnaire was executed by a self-administration method, and a total of 290 copies were statistically treated. The content of the questionnaire are composed of 2 questions on an attitude survey before and after manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket, 3 questions on an educator for practice of a temporary resin jacket, 7 questions on recognition of technical skills for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket, 9 questions on the practice content evaluation of manufacturing of a temporary resin jacket and recognition on manufacturing practice of a the temporary resin jacket. Results : 1. The average of recognition on technical skills for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket of a dental hygienist was 3.82 points, the average of evaluation on practice content of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket being 3.75 points, and the average of recognition on the practice of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket was 3.71 points. 2. Currently, as the educator for the practice of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket, dental hygienists were 188 persons(64.8%) and dental technicians was 102 persons(35.2%), and as educators they want in the future, dental hygienists were 97 persons(33.3%) and dental technicians was 193 persons(66.7%). Persons hoping reeducation for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket were 219 persons(85.9%). 3. There was a significant difference in consciousness of students before and after practice of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket(p<.001). 4. There was a significant difference in practice evaluation and practice recognition according to the educational subject(p<.001). 5. There was a significant reverse correlation in the educational subject, practice evaluation and practice recognition(p<0.01). Conclusions : The practice for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket in education of dental hygiene is necessary to improve job performance ability in more various and specialized dental treatment and to solve desire for improvement of professional technical skill ability of students, and accordingly. About study process of the future students observation investigation or student objective interview investigation etc. seeks a problem in the become research lead, the succeeding research which gropes the plan which is the possibility of solving the problem which discovered is thought will be necessary.
The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare dental hygine curriculum of three countries--Korea, U.S.A., and Japan--, focusing on the ways of organizing content. In this study, 30 curriculum documents of dental hygienist in U.S., Japan, and Korea were analyzed and discussed by a framework of analysis which was constructed referring to Tylerian curriculum model. Using this framework, three kinds of key components of curriculum document were compared according to specific elements of each component. More specifically, comparing those curriculum documents, we must consider the dimension of content organization. In this study, the problem of course organization was viewed on three dimensions: continuity, sequence, and integration of curriculum content. Based on the results of this study, the conclusions are as follows. 1. Courses of dental hygienist education should be organized so that the curriculum foster the cumulative and continuous learning. It will be accomplished by considering the essential procedures or sequence of dental hygiene activities. 2. When organizing curriculum elements, we should consider the continuity dimension of learning content. Continuity deals with the vertical manipulation or repetition of curriculum components. In other words, it accounts for the reappearance in the curriculum of certain major ideas or skills. Therefore, courses should be based on the level of the dental hygienist activities in order to ensure a continuity of learning experiences. 3. Dental hygienist curriculum must be organized in a way to integrate the logic of dental hygiene as a discipline with the process of dental hygiene performance. Integration refers to the linking of all types of knowledge and experiences contained within the curriculum design. It emphasizes horizontal relations among various content topics and themes involving all domains of knowledge recognized. Thus, courses of dental hygiene curriculum should be integrated to allow college students to obtain a unified view of knowledge and an in-depth meaning of the dental hygiene as a profession.

Background: To promote and maintain oral health among adults, the relationship between oral health and obesity was examined, and the effects of oral health on obesity were investigated. Methods: A total of 4,270 Korean adults aged ≥20 years were selected as study subjects using raw data from the first year (2019) of the eighth period of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Complex sample Rao-Scott chi-square test and complex sample logistic regression analysis were performed using PASW Statistics ver. 18.0. Results: The prevalence of abdominal obesity was 1.3 times higher subjects with poor oral health than in those with good perceived oral health and 1.3 times higher in subjects who did not receive dental checkups compared to those that did. The frequency of brushing of teeth was 1.2 times higher for subjects who reported brushing 2~3 times per day compared to those who reported brushing four or more times per day. The risk of being overweight was 1.3 times higher in subjects with one or more dental implants than in those with none. Conclusion: To build an integrated health program, it is thought that a preventive approach through self and expert oral health care, considering the age-specific characteristics of adults, is necessary for the intervention process used to build customized obesity prevention projects at the national level.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine students' difficulties in the process of oral radiography practice, to raise awareness of the importance and necessity of oral radiography and decipher, and to provide some information on effective ways of oral radiography practice. Methods : The subjects in this study were 285 dental hygiene students at K college, who included 153 sophomores and 132 graduates-to-be from June to November, 2010. Results : 1. The parts of the anatomy structure that they found it most difficult to decipher were maxillary molar(25.3%) and lower molar(22.1%). 2. They made during oral radiography was an improper film positioning(35.1%). 3. The part of bisecting technique was adjusting vertical and horizontal angles(53.0%). 4. The part of paralleling technique was positioning XCP in the oral cavity(44.2%). 5. The part of bite-wing technique was adjusting vertical and horizontal angles(38.2%). 6. The part of occlusion technique was positioning film and tube head(36.5%). 7. The part of panorama technique was finding out program setting(42.5%). Conclusions : The findings of the study indicated that in terms of anatomy structure decipher, it's especially difficult to decipher maxillary molar and lower molar, and that film positioning was difficult to do in the process of oral radiography. What difficulties they faced in applying each kind of oral radiography techniques and which part of the oral cavity they found it hard to radiograph were analyzed as well in this study. Given the findings of the study, more intensive practice is required to help students to acquire accurate oral radiography techniques to ensure their successful job performance in the future.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of oral health education on adolescents. Methods: The subjects were middle school students in a health promoting school in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province. Before giving the students oral health instruction, their modified Patient Hygiene Performance index (PHP index) was measured using disclosing solution. Then, the students were taught the right way to brush teeth (Rolling method) and use oral hygiene devices such as dental floss, tongue cleaner and interdental brush. Their modified PHP index was re-measured three days after and seven days after the education to evaluate the effect and persistency of oral health education. of the total 116 students, 48 students who completely filled out the questionnaire and participated in the whole process, photo shooting and three times of PHP index measurement, were included in the final analysis. Results: The students' modified PHP index significantly decreased three days after the education. However, the index slightly went back up seven days after the oral health education. Conclusion: Oral health education was effective in reducing dental plaque which remained after brushing. Continuous education about and constant motivation for oral hygiene turned out to be critical to maintain the impact of oral health education. Therefore, it is necessary to develop educational contents which can constantly motivate teenagers.
The purpose of this article is reviewed the historical background and development of oral care devices in the ancient civilization. Through an evolutional process of oral care devices, the prevalence of periodontal diseases and dental caries has revealed decreasing tendency. Because of the changing the role of the toothbrush, the name of brush should be alter from toothbrush to oral brush. Recent we can apply toothbrush to tongue cleaner to diminish the oral breathe odor. Selection of the toothbrush for fittable for each and every person is the one of important point to maintain the oral hygiene. including check-up the oral hygiene status after toothbrush with disclosing solution. This review of literature suggest that the most important way to maintain the oral health shoul be included the selection of proper toothbrush for each person and confirmation of result of toothbrush in oral cavity after had learned tooth brush instruction from professional person.
