Background: This study involved a geriatric oral care expert who developed the competencies of students in the Department of Dental Hygiene and conducted preliminary research to develop an effective curriculum. Methods: A questionnaire was conducted in the last week of class targeting students who took courses in geriatric dentistry, geriatric dental hygiene, and practice. In order to confirm the educational effect according to the differences in the geriatric dental hygiene curriculum, the differences in students' achievement of major competencies, awareness of the geriatric dental hygiene process, class satisfaction, and ageism were analyzed. Results: Regarding major competency attainment, 'communication competency' was significantly higher in PBL education that combined theory and practice than that theory-oriented PBL education (p=0.038). For ageism, the tendency to avoid older adults was low in PBL education, which combined theory and practice, and was statistically significant (p=0.040). For class satisfaction, the rate of responding 'very high' for the 'class atmosphere' was significantly high (p=0.025) for PBL education that combined theory and practice. Conclusion: The PBL teaching method can be useful as a geriatric dental hygiene curriculum. However, it would be more effective to create a curriculum so that education in geriatric dental hygiene care practice can be combined with theory rather than a theoretical education alone.

Objectives: This study was conducted to find scaling patients' oral health belief and satisfaction by applying Comprehensive Dental Hygiene Care (CDHC) process. Methods: From July 1 to September 20, 2020, the data about 182 patients who had scaling in dental clinics and hospitals had been collected and analyzed. For data analysis, SPSS Statistics 22.0 was applied to conduct frequency analysis, chi-square, t-test, One way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Regarding oral health behavior, in the CDHC group 92.4% used oral care products (p<0.001), and 67.4% regularly visited dental clinics for oral care (p<0.001). Regarding the oral health belief according to general characteristics, in the CDHC group, persons aged '50-65' scored 2.4 (the highest), and were significantly different from those aged '20-29' as the result of post-hoc analysis (p<0.001). Regarding the oral health belief of the CDHC group according to oral health behavior, the scaling cycle '3 months' scored the highest (p<0.05). The patients' satisfaction had high correlations with benefit (p<0.01) and Importance (p<0.05) as the sub factors of the oral health belief of the CDHC group. Conclusions: CDHC positively influenced scaling patients' oral health belief and satisfaction. Therefore, it is necessary to expand CDHC, as the medium to improve oral health belief and satisfaction, to clinical settings.
Objectives: This study explored job satisfaction experience and meaning of work in dental hygienists. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 clinical dental hygienists who had been working in dental clinics for more than 10 years. The analysis method used was developed by Giorgi, including all four steps. Results: The results of the interview were categorized into five central meanings: recognition and trust (including patient's trust, trust in the boss, recognition in the hospital, and intimacy), growth (growth of the hospital, growth in jobs, and problem-solving skills), professional pride (self-esteem, extension of work and changes of awareness, and being able to help others), reward (financial compensation and psychological rewards), and meaning of life given by work (the process of maturing, self-representation, and vitality of life). Conclusions: Based on this study, we need to develop tools to measure dental hygienists' level of job satisfaction as well as follow-up research on ways to improve it.
Objectives : This study was carried out in order to obtain basic data for students' efficient acquirement and instruction of radiography technology in the future by surveying dental hygiene students' recognition of periapical radiography. Methods : This study carried out a questionnaire survey targeting dental hygiene students from December 2009 to December 2010, and obtained the following results. Results : 1. As a result of examining recognition on periapical radiography, the bisecting angle technique was indicated to be averagely $3.84{\pm}0.566$ points. The paralleling technique was indicated to be $2.66{\pm}0.701$ points. 2. As a result of examining about problems given the bisecting angle technique, what had been most difficult given the bisecting angle technique was indicated to be the highest in cone positioning with 34.2%. The most difficulty given deciding on the X-ray vertical-angel irradiation direction was indicated to be the highest with 66.9% in adjusting the cone direction on the virtual bisector. 3. As a result of examining about problems given the paralleling technique, what had been most difficult in the process of the paralleling technique was indicated to be the highest with 56.7% in fixing the film immobilization device inside the mouth. Conclusions : Examining the above results, it is considered that there is a need of understanding morphological and anatomical structure inside the mouth in order to reduce the mistake rate given the periapical radiography, and that it is important to increase skill level by repetitively shooting several times with having enough time.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of cultural competence and its influencing factors among 530 dental hygiene students. The analysis was performed using PASW Statistics ver. 18.0, and the following conclusions were drawn. Cultural knowledge levels showed a significant difference according to general characteristics in four components of cultural competence levels. Cultural competence and its four components were higher in subjects who have a religion (p<0.05). The differences in cultural competence levels according to culture-related characteristics are as follows. In individuals with experience of taking foreign culture-related classes, intention to work overseas, or fluency in a foreign language, cultural competence levels and its four components such as cultural comfort, knowledge, awareness, and behavior intent were higher (p<0.05). Intention of overseas employment was the factor most strongly influencing the level of cultural competence of the subjects. The more intention the subjects have to work overseas, the more they have experienced foreign culture-related lessons, the more fluently they speak a foreign language, and the higher level of cultural competency they reached (p<0.05). As the research results show, it is necessary to establish a continuing plan to understand and communicate with individuals of other cultures through foreign language and foreign culture classes in schools in order to improve the level of cultural competence. This education would reduce the fear and stress that subjects might make a mistake in meeting with people from other cultures, and it could be a preparatory process to actively carry out dental hygiene practice with foreigners.
The aim of this study was to investigate the caries management by risk assessment (CAMBRA) development process and the latest updated caries risk assessment for the domestic settlement of the CAMBRA program and the activation of dental clinics. A system for CAMBRA was published in California Dental Association (CDA) in 2007. To investigate whether CAMBRA can be successfully implemented outside a university setting, a practice-based research network (PBRN) was created in the San Francisco Bay Area. Based on the CAMBRA-PRAN clinical studies, the caries risk assessment (CRA) tool was updated for patients aged 6 through adults in 2019. The CAMBRA system is expected to be widely and actively used in the dental field in Korea to contribute to oral health care.
This study was aimed to analyze factors affecting intention on clinical application by task autonomy of dental hygienists, expected effect and obstructive factor on clinical application of assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation (ADPIE). Meanwhile, it proved mediating effects of "attitude toward ADPIE" when it came to "intention on clinical application". The data was collected from 237 dental personnel in capital region from March 28, 2014 to May 2, 2014. To analyze the suitability of a theoretical model and hypothesis testing, SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 18.0 program were used. The theoretical model was accepted as it resulted in ${\chi}^2=421.67$ while showing goodness of fit index=0.858, comparative fit index=0.915, Tucker-Lewis index=0.896, root mean square residual=0.039, and root mean square error of approximation=0.099. The result showed "task autonomy of dental hygienists (${\beta}=0.398$, p<0.05)" and "expected effect on ADPIE (${\beta}=0.363$, p<0.01)" had a positive effect on "attitude toward ADPIE". Also, "attitude toward ADPIE" had a positive effect on "intention on clinical application". In addition, "task autonomy of dental hygienists" and "expected effect on ADPIE" had an indirect influence on "intention on clinical application" via such intermediary as "attitude toward ADPIE". According to the above results, the task autonomy of dental hygienists, expected effect on ADPIE, and attitude toward ADPIE were confirmed to be significant factors when it came to the intention on its clinical application. Therefore in order to settle ADPIE in the clinical practice, improvement of task autonomy for dental hygienists as well as their expectation and attitude on ADPIE must be promoted.
Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted primarily through droplets, and dental practitioners are at risk of occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 infection owing to direct contact with the patient's mouth, aerosols from dental procedures, and saliva. Wearing a mask is believed to be the best method of protection against infection, and a systematic literature review was conducted on whether the dental masks used in dentistry are effective in preventing Coronavirus Infectious Disease-19 (COVID-19). Methods: We used PubMed, Google Scholar, DBpia, NDSL, and KISS databases for this study. Of the 917 documents narrowed down by the search terms "Coronavirus, COVID-19, and dental," 83 documents were collected and studied. Ultimately, 42 of these papers were selected for analysis after considering duplication from the flow chart of the literature selection process. Results: While dental masks are often used when treating patients with unknown COVID-19 status, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated that the use of dental masks is insufficient in preventing cross-transmission of COVID-19; instead, it was recommended that N95 masks, which correspond to KF94 masks, should be worn daily. On the other hand, wearing a dental mask and following precautions such as hand hygiene may not pose a significantly higher risk of infection than wearing an N95 mask when treating COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: There is an ongoing discussion regarding the use of dental masks when treating dental patients, and many argue that different types of masks should be selected according to the degree of infection and the individual's respiratory condition. By considering the safety and efficacy of dental masks in preventing infection, improvements can be made in the management of COVID-19 and dental-related infections.
The purpose of this study is to forecast patient satisfaction and service value through the staged regression analysis of the relation between each factor and its satisfaction and service value, following the measurement of the quality of dental care service that patients recognize. And a self-administered survey was used for this study. The subjects of this survey were 394 outpatients of dental clinics located in K city in the period from Dec. 5, 2004 to Feb. 19, 2005, the questionnaire was composed of a total of 31 questions to measure the quality of overall dental care service(22 questions), the patient satisfaction(6 questions) and the service value(3 questions). The 7 points Likert scale ranging from "very poor"(1-point) to "very high"(7-point) was used for these questions The results of study could be summarized as follows: 1. The most useful index to predict patient satisfaction turned out to be "internal environment", followed by "treatment process and waiting time", "dentist", "external environment", and "dental hygienist". 2. The service value had a significant effect on the "internal environment", "dentist", "treatment process and waiting time". 3. The most useful index to predict the service value turned out to be "treatment process and waiting time", followed by "internal environment" and "dentist". Today, the quality of dental care service is becoming a prime concern since it is directly connected to a matter of survival of medical service organizations. Dental clinics desperately need patient-oriented marketing strategies in order to actively cope with changing medical environment. They also need to thoroughly examine possible measures to maximize the service value by establishing a variety of service strategies which can promote service quality that patients recognize.
The purpose of this study was to develop a motivational interviewing (MI) training program to improve competency in communication and to effect the evaluated changes that would occur in dental students' counseling techniques as result of the training in the program. The study proceeded through the program via role-play practice, which was explained effectively during the MI program training process. A convenience sample of 43 fourth-year dental hygiene students was recruited. Twenty-two students were randomly assigned to the intervention group and 21 to the control group in the order of recruitment. The theoretical lecture was delivered over 3 hours and the practice was done in parallel by applying cases occurring in clinic settings. The practice was technical training, partner practice, and small group practice. The intervention group received three hour MI lecture while the control group received no lecture. Evaluation through role-play practice was separated according to "researcher's viewpoint," "counselor's role viewpoint," and "patient's role viewpoint." The results of the analysis showed that the intervention group had higher MI skills and ability than the control group. Furthermore, program participants showed positive impressions to the MI training program. The use of coaching sessions improved the MI techniques and counseling skills of dental hygiene students learning MI. The effect of the application of the MI training program was that the MI training improved counseling skills and interviewing abilities. Moreover, continuous training and feedback enhanced MI techniques and core skills. Training using lectures in parallel with practice rather than education through theory alone improved students' techniques. Application of role play through the combined method of the MI program was confirmed by an effective training method.
