Patients with disabilities are a significant segment of Korea population. However, they encounter more challenges when seeking dental care. So, dentists and students who are future dental providers should have a responsibility to provide oral care services for them. In this study, we hypothesize that the education of special care dentistry may influence positive attitudes of the disabled. The attitudes are influenced by demographic variables such as gender, religion, experience of volunteer activities and marital status. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the change of attitudes of students towards people with disabilities between before and after class of special care dentistry. 72 students enrolled at the Kyung Hee University were surveyed. All participants attended class of Special Care dentistry in the third grade. The survey was conducted two times, just before class and after class. The attitudes of students were assessed using the well-documented ATDP (Attitude Toward Disabled Person)-O(Original) scale and MAS (Multidimensional Attitudes Scales Toward Persons with Disabilities) scale through the methodology of questionnaires. The results indicated that gender, experience of volunteer activities and marital status did not affect their ATDP and MAS score. In religious affiliation, only, there were statistically significant difference in student attitudes between before and after class of Special care dentistry. It means that habitual religious activity may offer stronger effects on student's attitude than short-term education. Therefore, long-term and specific educational experiences are needed to promote positive attitudes for people with disability.
Objectives : The aim of the study is to investigate the antimicrobial activity of jaborandi and sorbitol to various oral microbes. Methods : Jaborandi leaves contain pilocarpine. The conditions for extraction were optimized on the basis of substances, temperatures and pHs. Total pilocarpine content after extraction was analyzed by HPLC. The herbal antimicrobial activity of jaborandi and sorbitol were evaluated for oral microbes containing ATCC 25175 S. mutans, ATCC 13419 S. salivarius, ATCC 6249 S. mitis, ATCC 33398 S. equi, ATCC 29213 S. aureus, ATCC 14053 C. albicans. Results : The optimum conditions for highest yielding extraction were pilocarpine content after boiling at $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour at pH 3. The level of total pilocarpine content was analyzed at 833 mg/kg by HPLC. The most effective antimicrobial activity was obtained by combination of pilocarpine and sorbitol rather than pilocarpine, menthol and sorbitol, respectively. Conclusions : This results supported the preventive oral health care using safe and convenient jaborandi herb.
Objectives : This study was to prepare basic data about middle and high school students' school loss due to oral diseasea and to investigate the relevant factors. Methods : The survey is conducted for 575 middle school students in Busan and Gyeongnam. School loss was investigated based on the experiences of absences and leaving school early, which had happened from oral diseasea. The independent variables were oral health behaviors and sociopeconomic factors such as sex, age of their parents, educational level of their parents, family income. Factors related with school loss was analyzed by the multiple logistic regression method. Results : The experience ratio of leaving school early to the dental clinic or having difficulty in studying was higher in the case of high school student than in middle school student case. The parameters related with absence or leaving school early for oral disease were the education level, the distinction of sex, fear about medical examination and the standard of living. The reasons of absence or leaving early for visiting the dental clinic were related with education level, the distinction of sex, fear about medical examination, distrust of oral care and the satisfaction of oral health. The parameters having effect on school performance were education level, sex, fear about medical examination, distrust of oral care, cost burden, interests in oral health by the parents and school record. Conclusions : The oral health promotion should be developed to decrease school loss for students.

Recently, the DMFT of the children with neurological disorders is similar or lower than the DMFT of the children with no disability. It is supposed that the primary motor impairment and secondary physical weakness, frequent hospitalization, sugar- rich food and drugs, lack of oral care, delayed dental visit made high caries susceptibility. In case of treatment of the children with severe neurological disorders, dentists should make a thorough caries preventive plan based on individualized caries risk assessment. Also parents and medical doctors should recognize the importance of oral care and do the early dental visit and home care.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate oral health status, caries-inducing bacterial activity of the mental retardation students, and developing motivation method for improving oral hygiene management by clarifying the relationship between caries-inducing bacterial activity and oral health status of mental retardation students. Caries experience indices, caries susceptibility test, gingival health evaluation, and oral hygiene management and oral health survey were performed. Results were as follows : 1. The DMFT index of disabled students(12 years) was 2.07. 2. The gingival inflammation was occurred more frequently in older ages. 3. There also was a high positive correlation between caries incidences and the results of caries-inducing bacterial activity test especially in deciduous teeth. This result suggested that the Dentocult SM mutans test as a caries activity test is a reliable method for measuring the status of dental caries in mental retardation students. Because it would motivate the mental retardation students to care more actively for their oral hygiene if they learn how much dental caries-inducing bacteria are living in their mouth by observing the bacterial colony on the cultured test strip, it can become a possibly efficient educational tool for the mental retardation students.
