  • We propose a novel monitoring system for a recycling piggery slurry treatment system through neural networks. Here we tried to model treatment process for each tank(influent, fermentation, aeration, first sedimentation and fourth sedimentation tanks) in the system based on population densities of heterotrophic and lactic acid bacteria. Principle component analysis(PCA) was first applied to identify a relation between input(microbial densities and parameters for the treatment) and output, and then multilayer neural networks were employed to model the treatment process for each tank. PCA filtration of input data as microbial densities was found to facilitate the modeling procedure for the system monitoring even with a relatively lower number of input. Neural networks independently trained for each treatment tank and their subsequent combinatorial data analysis allowed a successful prediction of the treatment system for at least two days.

  • We conducted an inoculation test using nine open-pollinated families of pine trees to evaluate their susceptibility and mortality in different densities of pine wood nematode. Three-year-old nine open-pollinated pine families were inoculated with Bursaphelenchus xylophilus at levels of 3,000, 5,000, and 7,000 nematodes/seedling in greenhouse. There were no distinct patterns in latent period among three densities of B. xylophilus in all families. Most families showed the first disease symptoms of needle discoloration within 12-15 days after inoculation. However, open-pollinated progenies of Pinus densiflora showed the longest latent period because none of one-year-old needles were wilted until 14 days after inoculation with 5,000 and 7,000 nematodes. One-year-old needles were wilted earlier than current needles in all tested families with all densities of B. xylophilus. Current needles were not wilted until 14 days after inoculation in all seedlings. The mortality of all seedlings rapidly increased from 35 days to 49 days after inoculation, and all died within 80 days except two seedlings. A 3,000 nematodes/100 ${\mu}L$ with sterilized distilled water are enough to screen 3-year-old pine seedlings for resistance to B. xylophilus.

  • Chronic asthma is considered as an incurable disease in modern society. This study focused on development of an animal model for the chronic asthma to investigate new drugs from traditional herbal medicine. And we tested the animal model with a typical prescription, Chungsangboha-tang and tried to find biochemical markers such as catecholamines and cAMP in serum, and as densities of beta-receptor in lung tissues. SD rats were actively sensitized by exposure to ovalbumine (OA). Ten days after sensitization, rats were challenged with OA aerosol by nebulizer six times every three days. Mucin was increased in bronchoalveolar lavages (BALs) after antigen (OA) challenge. Serum concentration of epinephrine was decreased significantly although there were not changed much in serum concentration of cAMP and the densities of beta-receptor in lung tissues. Chungsangboha-tang (5 g/kg/day) was given orally to ovalbumin-sensitized rats (n=8) for 15 days. Mucin in bronchoalveolar lavages (BALs) was increased significantly after treatment of Chungsangboha-tang although concentrations of epinephrine and cAMP were not changed significantly. The densities of beta-receptor in lung tissues were not different from those of controls. These results suggest that the ovalbumin-sensitized rats can be a good animal model of chronic asthma and Chungsangboha-tang is a possible drug in the treatment of chronic asthma.

  • The electromigration phenomena and the characterizations of the conductor lifetime (Time-To-Failure, TTF) in Al-1%Si thin film interconnections under D.C. and Pulsed D.C. conditions were investigated . Meander type test patterns were fabricated with the dimensions of 21080$mu \textrm{m}$ length, 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ width, 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness and the 0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$/0.8$\mu\textrm{m}$($SiO_2$/PSG)dielectric overlayer. The current densities of $2 \times10^6 A/\textrm{cm}^2$ and $1 \times10^7 A/\textrm{cm}^2$ were stressed in Al-1%Si thin film interconnection s under a D.C. condition. The peak current densities of $2 \times10^6 A/\textrm{cm}^2$ and $1 \times10^7 A/\textrm{cm}^2$ were also applied under a Pulsed D.C. condition at frequencies of 200KHz, 800KHz, 1MHz, and 4MHz with the duty factor of 0.5. THe time-to-failure under a Pulsed D.C.($TTF_{pulsed D.C}$) was appeared to be larger than that under a D.C. condition. It was found that the TTF under both a D.C. and a Pulsed D.C. condition. It was found that the TTF under both a D.C. and a Pulsed D.C. condition largely depends upon the appiled current densities respectively . This can be explained by a relaxation mechanism view due to a duty cycle under a Pulsed D.C. related to the wave on off. The relaxation phenomena during the pulsed off period result in the decayof excess vacancies generated in the Al-1%Si thin film interconnections because of the electrical and mechanical stress gradient . Hillocks and voids formed by an electromigration were observed by using a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy).

  • Korea's national highways, which emphasize a high level of mobility, serve primarily intercity travel and are used as a detour for freeways. However. at the present. the highways do not have consistent geometric features or other characteristics: for example. some highways have full access control and others have uncontrolled access. Generally, geometric and traffic conditions affect Pronouncedly travel speeds in the highway sections. This study focused on the effect of signalized intersection relative factors on the speeds: signalized intersection densities, signal phases, and volume levels. The study shows that signalized intersection density was the strongest variable affecting the travel speeds: the speeds held fairly constant over intersection densities below 0.3 intersections/km, decreased sharply through intersection density of 0.7 intersections/km. and appeared constant at the lowest level over intersection densities above 0.7 intersections/km. The results also indicate that the effect of signal and traffic volume levels on the speeds was similar to that of the signalized intersection density.

  • Survey was conducted on the kinds and densities of pests associated with stored garlic collected from farms of major garlic production areas from 1994 to 1995 in Korea. Aceria tulipae, Rhizoglyphus sp., Ditylenchus dipsaci, and Tyrophagus putrescentiae were frequently detected with high densities and Tarsonemus bilobatus and Aphelenchus avenue showed relatively low detection rates and densities. Detection rate of A. tulipue was 38% in 1994, but the rate was 65% in 1995. Number of the mite ranged from 1 to 4,500 per scale. Detection rate of Rhizoglyphus sp. was 63% in 1994, but the rate was 13% in 1995 and average number of the mite ranged from 1 to 135 per scale in 1994. Garlics damaged by Rhizoglyphus sp. showed decaying symptom. T~rophagusp utrescentiae was detected from 22 farms among 32 farms surveyed in 1994 and from 21 farms among 39 farms surveyed in 1995. However, number of the mite on garlic scale was relatively lower than the other mites and its damages on stored garlic was not determined.

  • This study was investigated to find out the optimum rhizome size of ginger characteristics and yield at two planting densities. Seventy five gram of rhizome gave best performance for plant height and yield with comparison with the other sizes at two planting densities. Among 25g, 50g and 75g of ginger rhizome size were not significantly different in plant height and yield at $30{\times}30cm$ planting density. But, 25g of rhizome size is economically recommended at $30{\times}30cm$ planting densities.

  • Effects of rearing density on growth and survival of the polychaete rockworm Marphysa sanguinea have been investigated in order to develop rearing techniques for this species. This study was examined over a nine-month period in the Fisheries Science and Technology Center of Pukyong National University. Three rockworm densities, 500, 1,000 and $2,000worms{\cdot}m^{-2}$ with weight ranges of < 0.5 g, 0.6-1.5 g, and 1.6-2.5 g, and the no feed control treatment, were stocked in triplicate $0.10m^2$ boxes with sand bottoms. Growth rates were checked with 15 randomly sampled rockworms from each box at months 3, 6 and 9. Results showed that SGRs in all treatments were higher during the first period (0-3 months) than the second (3-6 months) and third periods (6-9 months) for all treatment densities, while SGRs decreased with increasing density. However, survival and growth of worms at high density was not better than low density, but daily biomass production in medium and high density groups was $6.28gm^{-2}day^{-1}$ for the rockworms of 0.6-1.5 g with $2,000inds{\cdot}m^{-2}$, and $12.6gm^{-2}day^{-1}$ for group between 1.6-2.5 g with $2,000inds{\cdot}m^{-2}$, and $14.7gm^{-2}day^{-1}$ for the group of individuals <0.5 g with $1,000inds{\cdot}m^{-2}$. Results showed that M. sanguinea can be one of the most suitable species to commercially exploit in a farming system. In particular, specified densities permit elevated pure production.

  • Congenital malaria is assumed to be a risk factor for infant morbidity and mortality in endemic areas like Maumere, Indonesia. Infected infants are susceptible to its impact such as premature labor, low birth weight, anemia, and other unspecified symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of congenital malaria and the influence of mother-infant paired parasite densities on the clinical outcome of the newborns at TC Hillers Hospital, Maumere. An analytical cross sectional study was carried out in newborns which showed criteria associated with congenital malaria. A thick and thin blood smear confirmed by nested PCR was performed in both mothers and infants. The association of congenital malaria with the newborn's health status was then assessed. From 112 mother-infant pairs included in this study, 92 were evaluated further. Thirty-nine infants (42.4%) were found to be infected and half of them were asymptomatic. Infected newborns had a 4.7 times higher risk in developing anemia compared to uninfected newborns (95% CI, 1.3-17.1). The hemoglobin level, erythrocyte amount, and hematocrit level were affected by the infants' parasite densities (P<0.05). Focusing on newborns at risk of congenital malaria, the prevalence is almost 3 times higher than in an unselected collective. Low birth weight, anemia, and pre-term birth were the most common features. Anemia seems to be significantly influenced by infant parasite densities but not by maternal parasitemia.

  • The growth of stem and leaves in Saururus chinensis. in the 2nd year was markedly increased comparing to that in the 1st year, however the growth in the 3rd you was not increased significantly. The growth in the 1st yew was greater in low planting density, while the growth in the 3rd year decreased in higher planting densities. The num- ber of leaves and stems per unit area increased in higher planting densities and later years. The weight of stem and leaves in Saururus chinensis was higher at the highest planting density in the 1st yew, at $40{\times}10cm$ planting in the 2nd year and at $40{\times}20cm$ planting in the 3rd year. The weight of rhizome in Saururus chinensis increased greatly in the 2nd you comparing to that in the 1st year, but the increase was insignificant in the 3rd year. The weight of rhizomes in Saururus chinensis showed significant interaction between planting densities and years showed highly significant difference.
