  • Two new marine species of the family Halichondriidae, Ciocalypta sasuensis n. sp. and Epipolasis maraensis n. sp., are collected from Chujado Island and Jejudo Island, Korea during 2000-2005. Ciocalypta sasuensis n. sp. is closely related to C. penicillus(Bowerbank, 1864) in the type of shape and ectosomal skeleton. However, C. sasuensis n. sp. is larger than Ciocalypta penicillus. Epipolasis maraensis n. sp. is similar to E. suluensis(Wilson, 1925) in the type of skeleton, but is different in size of spicule and growth form. Its oxeas and raphide are smaller than E. suluensis's. The growth form of this new species is semispherical and massive, but E. suluensis is lamellated.

  • A new marine sponge in the family Ancorinidae, Penares hongdoensis n. sp. was collected from Hongdo Island, Korea by SCUBA diving in 2004. P. hongdoensis n. sp. is closely related to P. cortius de Laubenfels, 1930 in their spicules. However, they differ in kind and size of spicules and growth form. The dichotriaene rhabds of new species are larger than that of P. cortius. And the new species has oxyaster, but P. cortius has oxyspheraster. Although the growth forms of both species are irregular massive, this new species shows conspicuous long projection toward upper part.

  • Two new marine sponges in the family Chalinidae, Haliclona (Haliclona) uljinensis n. sp. and Haliclona (Reniera) hongdoensis n. sp., are collected from Uljin and Hongdo Island, Korea during 2004-2007. H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is closely related to H. (H.) oculata in type of spicules. However, ectosomal skeleton of H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is reticulated and isodictyal reticulated type but H. (H.) oculata has not any dermal specialization in skeleton. The growth form of H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is thin encrusting with numerous cylindrical tubes on the surface but H. (H.) oculata is solid branch form. Haliclona (R.) hongdoensis n. sp. is closely related to H. (R.) aquaeductus in skeletal structure and growth form. However, oxeas of H. (R.) hongdoensis n. sp. are larger than H. (R.) aquaeductus's.

  • This paper describes six new species of sponges in the genus Agelas from Kosrae Island, The Federated States of Micronesia. Most Agelasid sponges are known from only tropical regions. All the new Agelas species; A. fragum n. sp., A. kosrae n. sp., A. purpurea n. sp., A. bakusi n. sp., A. vansoesti n. sp. and A. incrustans n. sp. are compared with other valid species that were studied. Six new species differ from the other species by morphology, growth form, skeletal fibres, habitats and spicule size. Agelas fragum n. sp. is characterized by its tuberculate surface and primary fibres with brush-like spicules. Agelas kosrae n. sp. is differs in skeletal structure and have tertiary fibres. Agelas purpurea n. sp. is characterized by primary, secondary and tertiary fibres are all cored with spicules. Agelas bakusi n. sp. is similar to Agelas clathrodes in shape, but differs in the primary fibres. Agelas vansoesti n. sp. is characterized by having acanthostrongyles. Agelas incrustans n. sp. is distinguished by its encrusting and not cavernous interior.

  • Two species of the family Chalinidae, Haliclona (Gellius) tubulensis n. sp. and Haliclona (Gellius) marismedi were collected from Hongdo Island and Gageodo Island, Korea during 2004-2007. H. (G.) tubulensis n. sp. is closely related to H. (G.) coreana in type of spicules and growth form. But it is different in size of toxas and oscules. Toxa of H. (G.) tubulensis n. sp. is one type and its oscules are tuberculated. The toxa of H. (G.) coreana is two types and lacks projections. The overall shape and spiculation of H. (G.) marismedi are nearly identical with specimens described by Pulitzer-Finali (1977).

  • A taxonomic study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Gageodo Island, Korea from August 1999 to July 2001. Among them, Haliclona (Gellius) coreana n. sp. turned out to be new to science. This new species seems to be close to H. (G.) arcoferus Vosmaer, 1885, based on the type of spicules. However, it is different in size of toxa and growth form. Toxa of the new species is half in length compared to H. (G.) arcoferus. The growth form is jar shaped in this new species, but flat in H. (G.) arcoferus.

  • Two marine species of family Callyspongiidae, Callyspongia mookriensis n. sp. and Siphonochalina truncata, were collected from Chujado Island and Jejudo Island, Korea during 2005-2007. Callyspongia mookriensis n. sp. is similar to Callyspongia flabelliformis Tanita, 1968 in type of spicule, habitat and growth form but differs in spicule and mesh size. The new species has longer oxea and broader mesh than Callyspongia flabelliformis's. The overall shape and skeleton of Siphonochalina truncata are nearly identical with specimens described by Lindgren (1897).

  • Four new species, Semitaspongia jejuensis, Scalarispongia regularis, S. nigra and Dysidea violata are described from Jejudo, Korea. They were collected from 15 m depth by SCUBA diving and from intertidal area by hand. Semitaspongia jejuensis n. sp. is easily distinguished from other Semitaspongia species in growth form, conules, colour, skeletal structure, diameter of fibre and habitat. Scalarispongia regularis n. sp. is very close to S. scalaris (Schmidt, 1862) in skeletal structure, but S. scalaris has longer conules, larger meshes, longer distance between primary fibres, and highly developed subdermal canal system. Scalarispongia nigra n. sp. is very close to S. regularis in skeletal structure but can be easily distinguished by its black colour of external surface and growth form. Dysidea violata n. sp. is similar with D. ethria (Laubenfels, 1936) in sponge appearance, but D. etheria is clearly defined by its blue colour and thickness of fibre.
