Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is known to be one of the major harmful emissions produced by diesel engines. The majority of diesel particles are in the range of smaller than $I{\mu}\textrm{m}$. Because of their tiny volume, ultrafine diesel particles contribute very little to the total mass concentration which is currently regulated for automobile emissions. Diesel particles are known to have deleterious effects upon human health because they penetrate human respiratory tract and have negative effects on the health. The measurement of the number distribution of nanometer size particles (nanoparticles) in the diesel exhaust emission is important in order to evaluate their environmental and health impact, and to develop new types of diesel particulate filters. In this study, we directly sampled particulate matters emitted from a diesel truck mounted on the chassis dynamometer by a flow separator and dilution system, and measured the nanoparticles using two types of differential mobility analyzers combined with a Faraday cup electrometer (FCE) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The particle size distributions were analyzed by changing engine operation condition, i.e. ratio of engine loading. The total number concentration of particles were increased with the engine loading ratio and the nanoparticles (less than 50nm) were affected by hydrocarbon (HC) concentration in the diesel exhaust.

In this paper, we consider a two-way relay non-orthogonal multiple access (TWR-NOMA) system with residual hardware impairments (RHIs) and channel estimation errors (CEEs), where two group users exchange their information via the decode-and-forward (DF) relay by using NOMA protocol. To evaluate the performance of the considered system, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability of the two groups users are derived in closed-form. Moreover, the asymptotic outage behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime is examined and the diversity order is derived and discussed. Numerical simulation results verify the accuracy of theoretical analyses, and show that: i) RHIs and CEEs have a deleterious effects on the outage probabilities; ii) CEEs have significant effects on the performance of the near user; iii) Due to the RHIs, CEEs, inter-group interference and intra-group interference, there exists error floors for the outage probability.

Particulate matter produced by diesel engines is of concern to cngine manufactures because of its environmental impact. The majority of diesel particles are in the range of smaller than 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Because of their tiny volume, ultrafine diesel particles contribute very little to the total mass concentration which is currently regulated for automobile emissions. Ultrafinc particles are known to have deleterious effects upon human health cspecially because they penetrate deeply human respiratory tract and have negative effects on the health. In this study, the engine exhaust gas was diluted in a dilution tunnel and the particle size distribution was measured using the scanning mobility particel sizer system. Measurements of the number and the mass concentrations of the diesel exhaust were made under different engine ooperating conditions. The dilution sampling system provided a common basis for collection of the exhaust by cooling and diluting the source emission prior to the measurement. The measurement results showed that the particle size distributions of the exhaust from the diesel vehicles equipment with either heavy-duty or lignt-duty diesel engines, were similar in the particle size range of 0.08~0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

Aluminum has been used as an alternative material for copper, due to its good electrical and thermal conductivities. However, small quantities of transition elements such as Ti and V affect the conductivities of aluminum. Therefore, in this study, the influence of B addition to reduce the effects of Ti and V on the conductivities of aluminum was investigated. Both the electrical and thermal conductivities of aluminum were improved with addition of B up to 0.05 wt%, while the conductivities were gradually reduced with an excess amount of B. SEM-EDS and XRD results exhibited that B reacted with Ti and V element to form diborides, such as $TiB_2$ and $VB_2$ phase, and those diborides tended to settle down to the bottom of the crucible because their densities were higher than that of aluminum melt. As a result, B reduced the deleterious effects of Ti and V, and the electrical and thermal conductivities of aluminum were improved.

In the present study, we assayed a number of compounds isolated from Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (Araliaceae) for an ability to protect rat cortical cell cultures from the deleterious effects of the neurotoxicant, glutamate. We found that ginsenosides Rbl and Rg3 significantly attenuated glutamate-induced neurotoxicity. Brief exposure of cultures to excess glutamate caused extensive neuronal death. Glutamate-induced neuronal cell damage was significantly reduced by pretreatment with Rbl and Rgl. Ginsenosides Rbl and Rg3 inhibited the overproduction of nitric oxide which routinely follows glutamate neurotoxicity and preserved the level of superoxide dismutase in glutamate-treated cells. Furthermore, in cultures treated with glutamate, these ginsenosides inhibited the formation of malondialdehyde, a compound produced during lipid peroxidation, and diminished the influx of calcium. These results show that ginsenosides Rbl and Rg1 exerted significant neuroprotective effects on cultured cortical cells. As such, these compounds may be efficacious in protecting neurons from oxidative damage produced by exposure to excess glutamate.

Aging is the progressive accumulation of changes with time associated with responsible for the ever-increasing susceptibility to disease and death which accompanies advancing age. Lipid peroxides easily produced in the membrane system by the chain reaction of free radicals which occurred from various environmental factors. The amount of lipid peroxides produced in biological system increased with aging process, and lipid peroxidation damages involved in aging process and pathological disorders. Although lipid peroxides have such deleterious effects on the organisms, there are numerous substances and mechanisms which prevent the reaction of peroxide formation and protect the subject from its toxicity. This review provides an overview of how does lipid peroxidation of unsaturated lipids take place by free radical, and what is the intervention of lipid peroxides in pathogenesis of some human diseases, and also how does food restriction influences the aging process and various pathological disorders. The major focus of this paper is to review the evidence indicating that food restriction retards the aging process, and possible mechanisms of its actions. Therefore, it discussed the effects of age and food restriction on life-span, membrane yield, lipid peroxidation, fatty acid composition and peroxidizability, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, prostaglasndin and thromboxane synthesis, which may be concerned with blood flow, membrane fluidity, homeostasis and glomerular filtration rate in living body.

Objectives: The deleterious effects of air pollution on various health outcomes have been demonstrated. However, few studies have examined the effects of air pollution on liver enzyme levels. Methods: Blood samples were drawn up to three times between 2008 and 2010 from 545 elderly individuals who regularly visited a community welfare center in Seoul, Korea. Data regarding ambient air pollutants (particulate matter ${\leq}2.5{\mu}m$ [$PM_{2.5}$], nitrogen dioxide [$NO_2$], ozone [$O_3$], carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide) from monitoring stations were used to estimate air pollution exposure. The effects of the air pollutants on the concentrations of three liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alanine aminotransferase [ALT], and ${\gamma}$-glutamyltranspeptidase [${\gamma}$-GTP)]) were evaluated using generalized additive and linear mixed models. Results: Interquartile range increases in the concentrations of the pollutants showed significant associations of $PM_{2.5}$ with AST (3.0% increase, p=0.0052), ALT (3.2% increase, p=0.0313), and ${\gamma}$-GTP (5.0% increase, p=0.0051) levels; $NO_2$ with AST (3.5% increase, p=0.0060) and ALT (3.8% increase, p=0.0179) levels; and $O_3$ with ${\gamma}$-GTP (5.3% increase, p=0.0324) levels. Significant modification of these effects by exercise and alcohol consumption was found (p for interaction <0.05). The effects of air pollutants were greater in non-exercisers and heavy drinkers. Conclusions: Short-term exposure to air pollutants such as $PM_{2.5}$, $NO_2$, and $O_3$ is associated with increased liver enzyme levels in the elderly. These adverse effects can be reduced by exercising regularly and abstinence from alcohol.

Bacteria are among the most common causes of severe diseases in both plants and animals. Salmonella spp. has deleterious effects and is the cause of various transmittable diseases. Because of strains resistivity, side effects and high prices of synthetic antibiotics, it has become essential to explore safe and economical natural sources of antibiotics. In this study, growth inhibitory effects of natural antibiotics present in crude extracts of Galla rhois, Thujae semen, Paeonia japonica, and Armeniacae semen were investigated both in vivo and iv vitro. Ethanol extracts of the above-mentioned plants were prepared and tested against seven serovars of Salmonella and Escherichia coli by disc diffusion method. In addition, the antibacterial effects of the plant extracts were determined in vivo using ducks as model animals. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed using blood and fecal samples of control, infected, and treated groups of the ducks to determine the gene expression levels of the bacteria. Our results confirmed that the Galla rhois ethanol extract had the highest antibacterial activity among the plant extracts when they were used individually. However, the Galla rhois, Thujae semen, and P. japonica ethanol extracts showed stronger antibacterial effects against all the bacterial species used when the extracts were combined at a ratio of 3:3:2, respectively.
The objective of this study was to demonstrate whether or not the deleterious effects of accelerated aging on seed vigour and viability are alleviated by interaction with gamma irradiation. Seeds of soybean (Glycine max L.) were artificially aged and subsequently irradiated with 4 and 8 Gy of gamma irradiation. Germination rate was negatively affected by accelerated aging and positively by gamma irradiation, with a positive interaction of a 3day-seed aging treatment occurring with 4 Gy, possibly suggesting that 4 Gy of gamma irradiation partially offset the adverse effects of seed aging on germination. However, 5-day aged seeds did not gain any benefits from the gamma irradiation. Electrolyte leakage from the seeds increased with the duration in days aged. Irradiation, however, did not impose any effects on the leakage. Respiration rate of the seed with hypocotyl and primary root was significantly low for the aged seeds, but not for the seeds with both irradiation and aging treatments. Accelerated aging decreased the dry weight of the hypocotyl and primary root of the seeds without any measurable effects of irradiation. $\alpha$-Amylase activity decreased with seed aging and positively responded to gamma irradiation. The data is discussed with regard to the possible roles of gamma irradiation for improving the seed vigour and viability of aged seeds.
Objectives : The second derivative of photoplethysmogram waveform(SDPTG) is a simple, convenient and non-invasive technique for pulse wave analysis. This study was designed to investigate the differences in the SDPTG between the affected side and the unaffected side in hemiparetic patients after stroke, and the effects of acupuncture at Palsa(BaXie) in hemiparetic patients after stroke. Methods : To evaluate the differences between the affected side and the unaffected side in hemiparetic patients after stroke, their SDPTG were recorded by using a Cardio Peri SA6000. To evaluate the effects of acupuncture at Palsa(BaXie) in 20 hemiparetic patients after stroke and 20 healthy subjects, their SDPTG were recorded 2 times(pre-acupuncture and post-acupuncture). The SDPTG consists of an a, b, c and d wave in systole and an e wave in diastole. Sano aging index was defined as (b-c-d)/a. Results : 1. The affected side in hemiparetic patients after stroke had higher average b/a ratio(p<0.05)and Sano aging index(p<0.05) than the unaffected side 2. In a comparison of pre-acupuncture and post-acupuncture at the Palsa(BaXie), b/a ratio(p<0.05) and Sano aging index(p<0.05) was decreased significantly in both hemiparetic patients and healthy subjects. Conclusions : These findings suggest that acupuncture at Palsa(BaXie) may be effective method of reverting some of the deleterious effects on vascular function produced by stroke.
