The liver is vulnerable to alcohol-related injury because it is the primary site of alcohol metabolism. Additionally, a number of potentially dangerous by-products are generated as alcohol is broken down in the liver. However, dietary supplements may prevent or relieve some of alcohol's deleterious effects. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the prophylactic effect of aqueous extract of Sesamum indicum (SI) on ethanol induced toxicity in rats. Male Wistar albino rats were divided into control, ethanol, pre-treatment, simultaneous and post-treatment groups. In the prophylactic experiment, Sesamum indicum, (200 mg/kg body weight) was administered by oral gavage for 28 days; two hours before, simultaneously with or two hours after ethanol exposure. Toxicity was induced by administering 45% ethanol (4.8 g/kg bw) by oral gavage. Lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and gluthathione-S-transferase (GST) activities were then determined in the liver, serum triglyceride (TG) levels, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were monitored and histological examination was carried out. The results revealed that ethanol administration led to significant elevation of TBARS level while depleting in the level of GSH as well as CAT, GPx, SOD and GST activities. Similarly, TG level and ALT and AST activities were elevated. The SI pre-treated group significantly inhibited TBARS, restored GSH level, enhanced CAT, GPx, SOD and GST activities and significantly decreased the elevated level of serum TG, ALT and AST activities. SI treatment (simultaneously with ethanol) exhibited similar effects to those of the SI pre-treated groups, while the SI post-treated group did not show the same protection as the Pre-treated group. S. indicum possesses antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties, that eliminate the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites of ethanol.

Rolling element bearing fatigue life can be significantly reduced by debris particles in lubricants. The debris particles cause raceway surface dents that initiate early fatigue damage. Optical interferometry has been found to be the best method for characterizing bearing raceway debris dent damage. This technique is used to determine the important features, sizes and density of dents. The resulting data file is then used to determine bearing fatigue life. Tests show that bearings manufactured by different processes and material types are affected differently by debris damage and that these differences must be considered by life prediction methodologies. Bearings made by a specific enhanced process can significantly resist the deleterious effects of debris damage and outperform bearings made by other means.
Compaction is becoming a greater concern in crop production and the environment because it can have deleterious effects on growing conditions that are difficult to remediate. Because compaction can vary considerably from point to point within a field, and also from depth to depth within the soil profile, it is important to consider quantification and management of the spatial and vertical variability in soil compaction when developing an overall site-specific crop management plan. In this paper, the importance of soil compaction, techniques for quantification of its variability, and the concept of site-specific tillage are examined. Methods and systems to detect within-field variation in soil strength as a surrogate measure of soil compaction and related soil properties are also compared and discussed. Quantification of variability in soil compaction and site-specific compaction management was motivated recently, and sensors and control systems are still under development. Future study will need to address a number of issues related to understanding and applying the sensor measurements.
The effect of content of reactive aggregate on alkali-silica reaction was investigated through the ASTM C 1260 method. The replacement proportions of fine aggregate by reactive aggregate were 25, 50, 75 and $100\%$, respectively. Reactive aggregate and fine aggregate(non-reactive aggregate) used are a metamorphic rock and andesite rock, respectively. The results indicate that the mortar-bar containing $25\%$ replacement of fine aggregate by reactive aggregate shows the lowest expansion but expansion in excess of $0.1\%$ at 16 days, which can distinguished between deleterious and potentially reactive. Although content of reactive aggregate is a small amount, it can cause detrimental expansion due to alkali-silica reaction.
Blue-light-emitting peiymer/dielectric nanolayer nanocomposites were prepared by the solution intercalation method and employed in electroluminescent device. Their photoluminescence and electroluminescence characteristics suggested that the nanolayers isolate the polymer chains and hinder the formation of excimers and aggregates. By reducing the excimer formation and its deleterious effects on emission efficiency, both the color purity and the luminescence stability were improved. Furthermore, the dielectric nanolayers have an aspect ratio of about 500 and therefore act as efficient barriers to oxygen and moisture diffusion, which produced a dramatic increase in the device stability.
Insomnia is a disorder of initiaton and maintenance of sleep that results in daytime sleepiness and dysfunction, and arises from multiple psychological, physiologic and environmental factors. A number of stroke patients suffer from insomnia classified as one of the sleep disorders associated with physical illness and on the contrary insomnia may have profound deleterious effects on the natural course of stroke. We experiened three cases of stroke patients with insomnia. In the point of Differentiation of Syndromes, these subjects were diagnosed as Excessive heat-fire syndrome of stroke and were administrated with Hwangyeonhaedog-tang Gamibang. After treatment, both sleep patterns and other accompanied symptoms improved.
The effects of various drugs on the alleviation of the symptoms of chemical bums were evaluated in mice to formulate topical antiblister preparations. After a chemical bum was induced on the mouse dorsal skin with 2-chloroethylethyl sulfide, the drug was applied on the disease site. The effectiveness of the drug was evaluated by determining blister size, necrosis score of skin and appearance of the chemical burns induced. It showed that steroids and aminoglycoside antibiotics had a tendency to protect skin cell, and antihistamines decreased the size of chemical bums. While oleaginous base resulted in deleterious effect, hydrophilic base didn't show a significant difference on the alleviation of the chemical burn symptoms compared to the control.
Necroptosis is a well-known form of caspase-independent cell death. Necroptosis can be triggered by various extrinsic stimuli, including death ligands in the presence of receptorinteracting protein kinase 3 (RIPK3), a key mediator of necroptosis induction. Our recent studies have revealed that C-terminus HSC-70 interacting protein (CHIP), an E3 ligase, can function as an inhibitor of necroptosis. CHIP−/− mouse embryonic fibroblast showed higher sensitivity to necrotic stimuli than wild-type mouse embryonic fibroblast cells. Deleterious effects of CHIP knockout MEFs were retrieved by RIPK3 depletion. We found that CHIP negatively regulated RIPK3 and RIPK1 by ubiquitylation- and lysosome- dependent degradation. In addition, CHIP−/− mice showed postnatal lethality with intestinal defects that could be rescued by crossing with RIPK3−/− mice. These results suggest that CHIP is a negative regulator of RIPK1 and RIPK3, thus inhibiting necroptosis.
In domestic rabbits, pasteurellosis is a primary respiratory disease entity caused by Pasteurella multocida. Respiratory pasteurellsos in rabbits is highly contagious due to dissemination of the organism in the nasal discharge (Benirschke, et al., 1978). The disease reflects a varied and complex host-parasite relationship. Acute infection with high mortality occurs sporadically especially in stressed rabbits less than 10 weeks old, in the form either an enzootic pneumonia, infection of the upper respiratory tract or septicemia. In addition to respiratory form, infection with P. multocida results in a variety of disease processes in rabbits including rhinitis, otitis media, otitis interna, abscesses, metritis, orchitis and meningoencephalaitis (Manning et al., 1989). The deleterious effects of pasteurellosis are common and pose serious problems for rabbit breeders and researchers (Flatt, 1974). (omitted)
Sleep disorders such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and restless legs syndrome (RLS) are very common disorders and may cause significant burden in terms of individual as well as societal aspects. Sleep insufficiency from such sleep disorders may cause deleterious effects on daily work life and may be associated with other major medical or psychiatric disorders including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, depression, and anxiety disorder. Various motor or occupational accident may result from the sleep problems. In addition, recent researches provide the method to evaluate the lost productivity time in terms of absenteeism and presenteeism. Moreover, several studies on cost-effectiveness of treatment of sleep disorders show that it is cost-effective.
