  • This study has evaluated the wear behavior of PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) Inconel 625 and Stellite 6 overlays on Nimonic 80A substrate. Nimonic 80A alloy was also included for comparison. In order to evaluate the wear performance, three-body abrasive wear test and pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test were performed. Microstructural development during the solidification of deposits is also discussed. Wear test results show that the wear rate of Stellite 6 deposit is lower than that of Inconel 625 deposit and Nimonic 80A. The sliding wear resistance of overlay deposits follows a similar trend to the abrasive wear resistance, but for Nimonic 80A. The main wear mechanisms were abrasive wear for Inconel 625 deposit, adhesive wear and delamination for Stellite 6 deposit in pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test and ploughing in three-body abrasive wear test. Cross sectional examinations of the worn surface of pin specimens after pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test implies that the plastic deformation near worn surface has occurred during the wear testing.

  • It has been cleared in previous author's paper that the fatigue life before the pitting on the rolling contact surface with lubricant are influenced by the wear amount. In this study, the wear type has been clarified when wear amount is extremely large such as the case without lubricant. The test of rolling contact fatigue has been conducted under two different of herzian pressures and three different of slide ratios without lubricant. In addition, residual stress and half-value breadth using X-ray diffraction on worn surface have been measured as well as the wear amount. The results show that the pitting type wear by rolling contact fatigue has not been occurred when the wear amount is considerably large. Thus this type of wear has been deduced by the fatigue wear depending on delamination theory.

  • Recently, the use of advanced materials with light weight significantly increases because of global regulation on CO2 emission. Especially, CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) one of the most promising advanced materials. Since CFRP has pretty higher strength per unit weight than steel, it is one of most popular materials in aviation industry and its application to automobile rises sharply. Especially, one of the frequent machining processes for CFRP is drilling to make a hole, however, CFRP drilling has troublesome limitations in hole quality and productivity induced due to delamination, splintering and severe tool wear. Particularly, cutting loads increase caused by tool wear makes delamination and splintering even severer. Therefore, tool wear monitoring or reduction in CFRP drilling must be considered seriously. In this study, we measured thrust force, flank wear, and tool surface temperature in drilling using various tools with different sizes and materials. Consequently, it was presented the effects of tool properties on drilled hole quality, thrust force and tool surface temperature.

  • This paper was focused on the wear characteristics of ion-nitrided metal and with ion-nitride processing, which is basically concerned with the effects of carbon content in workpiece and added carbon content gas atmosphere on the best wear performance. Increased carbon content in workpiece increases compound layer thickness, but decreases diffusion layer thickness. On the other hand, a small optimal amount of carbon content in gas atmosphere increase compound layer thickness as well as diffusion layer thickness and hardness. Wear tests show that the compound layer of ion-nitrided metal reduces wear rate when the applied wear load is small. However, as the load becomes large, the existence of compound layer tends to increase wear rate. Compressive residual stress at the compound layer is the largest at the compound layer, and decreases as the depth from the surface increases. It is found in the analysis that under small applied load, the critical depth where voids and cracks may be created and propagated is located at the compound layer, so that the adhesive wear is created and the existence of compound layer reduces the amount of wear. When the load becomes large, the critical depth is located below the compound layer and delamination, which may explained by surface deformation, crack nucleation and propagation, is created and the existence of compound layer increases wear rate. For the compound layer, at added carbon contents of 0 percent and 0.5 at. percent, the $\varepsilon$ monophase is predominant. But at 0.7 at. percent added carbon, the $\varepsilon$ monophase formation tends to be severely inhibited and r' and $Fe_3C$ polyphase formation becomes dominant. This increased hard $\varepsilon$ phase layer was observed to be more beneficial in reducing friction and wear.

  • Wear resistance and wear mechanism of hypereutectic Al-($15{\sim}40$)wt%Si alloys were investigated. Primary Si particles under $20{\mu}m$ size were formed in hypereutectic Al-Si alloy powders due to rapid solidification. But the Si particles of extruded bars were finely distributed in smaller size than that of atomized powders. The wear mechanism of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was divided into three types of wear phenomena, which were abrasive wear, delamination wear and severe adhesive wear according to sliding speed and load. At low sliding speed and load, wear mechanism was abrasive wear, so Al-15wt%Si alloy showed the best wear resistance. At high sliding speed and load, wear mechanism was adhesive wear, and Al-40wt%Si alloy showed the best wear resistance.

  • The effect of load and sliding speed on abrasive wear characteristics of glass fiber/polyurethane (GF/PUR) composites were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The friction coefficient, cumulative wear volume and surface roughness of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. Experimental results showed that the surface roughness of the GF/PUR composites was increased as applied load was higher in wear test. The cumulative wear volume tended to increase nonlinearly with increase of sliding distance and depended on applied load and sliding speed for these composites. It could be verified by scanning electric microscopy (SEM) photograph of surface tested that major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, ploughing, delamination, deformation of resin and cracking.

The friction coefficient, cumulative wear volume and surface roughness of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, ploughing, delamination, deformation of resin and cracking by scanning electric microscopy (SEM) photograph of the tested surface. As increasing the counterpart roughness the GF/PUR composites indicated higher friction coefficient. The surface roughness of the GF/PUR composites was increased as the sliding velocity was higher and the counterpart roughness was rougher in wear test.

  • Fretting of fuel rod cladding material, Zircaloy-4 Tube, in PWR nuclear power plants must be reduced and avoided. Nowadays the introduction of surface treatments or coatings is expected to bean ideal solution to fretting damage since fretting is closely related to wear, corrosion and fatigue. Therefore, in this study the fretting wear experiment was peformed using TiAIN coated Zircaloy-4 tube as the fuel rod cladding and uncoated Zircaioy-4 tube as one of grids, especially concentrating on the sliding component. Fretting wear resistance of TiAIN coated Zircaloy-4 tubes was improved compared with that of TiN coated tubes and uncoated tubes and the fretting wear mechanisms were delamination and plastic flow following by brittle fracture at lower slip amplitude but severe oxidation and spallation of oxidative layer at higher slip amplitude.

  • The effet of glass fiber and graphite on the wear properies in tin-bronze alloy matrix composites was studied by a pin-on-disk type wear testing machine. The results obtained from the wear test were analized by SEM observations of worn surfaces of pins and disks and EPMA composition measurments. The amount of wear was devreased as increasing the content of glass fiber in matrix, since the alloy matrix was reinforced by glass fibers. The wear mechanism of the matrix specimen without glass fibers was proved as the contact area delamination. Oxide layer formed on sliding surface led to the increasing wear resistance. Specimens containing graphite particles showed an lubrication effect to counter disks.
