  • The crystal growth rate of benzene from benzene-cyclohexane mixtures at a cylindrical layer crystallizer was determined from the slope of the line of correlation between operating time and layer thickness. The thickness of crystal layer was obtained from the amount of crystal deposited on the cooled wall surface of the crystallizer. The crystal growth rate was related with the degree of subcooling, which was defined as the difference between temperature of melt and that of growing crystal surface. The linear crystal growth rate for binary mixtures was proportional to the second power of the degree of subcooling. Equation model which was obtained from data through the rate of heat and mass transfer in the crystallizer and thus can tell crystal thickness and surface temperature of crystal layer according to the elapsed time was presented and successfully correlated to the experimental data. For the benzene-cyclohexane mixtures contains 5wt% and 10wt% of cyclohexane, the comparison of experimental data with calculation using model equation was done for crystal thickness corresponding to the various cooling temperatures.

  • In this paper, flow characteristics of R600a in an adiabatic capillary tube were investigated employing the homogeneous flow model. The model is based on fundamental equations of mass, energy and momentum which are solved simultaneously. Two friction factors(Churchill) and viscosity(McAdams) are comparatively used to investigate the flow characteristics. Thermodynamic and transport properties of R600a are calculated employing EES property code. Flow characteristics analysis of R600a in an adiabatic capillary tube is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters. The operating parameters considered in this study include condensation temperature, evaporation temperature, subcooling degree and inner diameter tube of the adiabatic capillary tube. The main results were summarized as follows: condensation and evaporation temperature, inlet subcooling degree and inner diameter tube of an adiabatic capillary tube using R600a have an effect on length of an adiabatic capillary tube. The length of an adiabatic capillary tube using R600a is expressed to the correlation shown in Eq. (15).

  • The important problems from the point of view of preventing global warming are to save the power consumption of automotive air-conditioning systems and reduce the refrigerant amount filled. To achieve such requirements, integral receiver/dryer (R/D) condensers were developed recently. Typical integral R/D condensers have extra headers that play the role of R/D. Except an extra header and somewhat complex tube array resulting from the extra header, the most integral R/D condensers have almost the same specification that tube has multi channels, fin has louvers, flow in tube is parallel, etc. When integral condensers are applied, it is known that the refrigerating effect increases, resulting from the increase of subcooling degree in condenser, and the refrigerant amount used saves. In spite of several merits, integral condensers have not been applied a lot. That is why there is an uncertainty in performance, using integral condensers. The objective of this study is to theoretically optimize the tube array in an integral R/D condenser that is really being applied to some vehicles. The tube array has a great effect on the performance of the integral condenser as well as common ones. Through computer simulation, we could see that the tube array, 14-6-3-5-3-4, in the same condenser was the best, comparing heat release rate, pressure drop, etc. to the real array, 17-5-3-3-2-5. It should be noted that the optimization is based on the condenser performance only.

  • Experiments on the performance of refrigeration system using alternatives to R12 are carried out. The condenser and the evaporator are concentric-tube heat exchangers of counter-flow type and the compressor is driven by a variable speed motor. In this study, R134a, R152a, R22/142b(50 : 50 by mass) are adopted as alternatives to R12. Tests are performed by varying the inlet and outlet temperatures of secondary fluids of evaporator and condenser under the condition of constant compressor speed, degree of superheating and degree of subcooling. Results show that R134a has refrigeration capacity close to that of R12 and requires the greatest compressor power compared with that of others. And the system using R152a shows the best performance from the viewpoint of refrigeration capacity, compressor power and coefficient of performance. R22/142b is superior to R12 in the above points.

  • A mathematical model has been developed for predicting kinematic, thermal, and solidification histories of atomized droplets during flight. Liquid droplet convective cooling, recalescence, equilibrium-state solidification, and solid-phase cooling were taken into account in the analysis of the solidification process. The spherical shell model was adopted where the heterogeneous nucleation is initiated from the whole surface of a droplet. The growth rate of the solid-liquid interface was determined from the theory of crystal growth kinetics with undercooling caused by the rapid solidification. The solid fraction after recalescence was obtained by using the integral method. The thermal responses of atomized droplets to gas velocity, particle size variation, and degree of undercooling were investigated through the parametric studies. It is possible to evaluate the solid fraction of the droplet according to flight distance and time in terms of a dimensionless parameter derived from the overall energy balance of the system. It is also found that the solid fraction at the end of recalescence is not dependent on the droplet size and nozzle exit velocity but on the degree of subcooling.

  • This paper presents a theoretical model for predicting transient behaviors during storage process of the cool storage system using the R141b clathrate. Introduction of the lumped capacitance method along with a brine reservoir having large thermal capacity yields a set of simplified energy equations. Based on the Arrhenius equation and the known experimental findings, the formation rate of clathrate for which the degree of subcooling is properly accounted is newly developed. An effective nondimensionalization of the model equations facilitates the closure of modeling as well as parametric study. Calculated results for a specific case not only simulate a typical pattern of temperautre variation in the tank successfully, but also agree reasonably well with available data. The effect of each characteristic parameter on the system performance is also investigated. It is revealed that the dominant among relevant parameters are the activation energy of reaction, the degree of subcoling and the initial mass fraction of refrigerant. Finally, the uncertainty associated with modeling of the shaft work variation appears to need further studies.

  • A series of experiments have been carried out to investigate the effects of non-condensable gas on the direct contact film condensation of vapor mixture under an adiabatic wall condition. The average heat transfer coefficient of the direct contact condensation was obtained at the atmospheric pressure with four main parameters ; air-mass fraction, mixture velocity, film Reynolds number, and the degree of water film subcooling having an influence on the condensation heat transfer coefficient. With the analysis of 88 experiments, a correlation of the average Nusselt number for direct contact film condensation of steam/air mixture at an adiabatic vertical wall was proposed as functions of film Reynolds number, mixture Reynolds number, air mass fraction, and Jacob number. The average heat transfer coefficient for steam/air mixture condensation decreased significantly while air mass fraction increased. The average heat transfer coefficients also decreased as the Jacob number increased, and were scarcely affected by the film Reynolds number below a mixture Reynolds number of about 245,000.

  • The capillary tube performance for R-407C is experimentally investigated. The experimental setup is a real vapor-compression refrigerating system. Mass flow rate is measured for various diameter and length while inlet pressure and degree of subcooling are changed. These data are compared with the results of a numerical model. The mass flow rate of the numerical model is about 14% less than the measured mass flow rate. It is found that mass flow rate and length for R-407C are less than those for R-22 under the same condition. Based on this experimental study and the numerical model, a set of design charts for capillary tube of R-407C is proposed.

  • A modified interfacial heat transfer correlation between a dispersed water droplet and ambient superheated steam is proposed and compared with available experimental data and other correlations. Modified one overcomes the inherent deficiencies of Lee and Ryley's interfacial heat transfer correlation that ignored the effects of steam superheating which can not be neglected especially in the reflood situation of a loss-of-coolant accident. Modified one is represented by (equation omitted) In the present correlation the effect of possible subcooling of a water droplet is not taken into consideration. Comparison of the above correlation with currently available measurement data for a water droplet in high temperature gas flow shows that the proposed one correlates well with the measurement data where the degree of superheating is negligible and considerable.

  • Effect of Convex Surface Curvature on the Onset of Nucleate Boiling of Subcooled Fluid Flow in Vertical Concentric Annuli An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the effect of the transverse convex surface curvature of core tubes on heat transfer in concentric annular tubes. Water is used as the working fluid. Three annuli having a different radius of the inner cores, Ri=3.18mm, 6.35mm, and 12.70mm with a fixed ratio of Ri/Ro=0.5 are used over a range of the Reynolds number between about 40,000 and 80,000. The inner cores are made of smooth stainless steel tubes and heated electrically to provide constant heat fluxes throughout the whole length of each test section. Experimental result shows that heat flux values on the onset of nucleate boiling of the smaller inner diameter model is much higher than that of the larger size test model.
