Brief Paper: An Analysis of Curricula for Data Science Undergraduate Programs

  • Today, it is imperative to educate students on how to best prepare themselves for the new data driven era of the future. Undergraduate education plays an important role in providing students with more Data Science opportunities and expanding the supply of Data Science talent. This paper surveys and analyzes the curricula of Data Science-related bachelor's degree programs in the United States. The 'required' and 'elective' courses in a curriculum for obtaining a B.S. degree were evaluated by course weight to indicate its necessity. As a result, it was possible to find out which courses were important in Data Science programs and which areas were emphasized for B.S. degrees in Data Science. We found that courses belong to the Data Science area, such as data management, data visualization, and data modeling, were more required for Data Science B.S. degrees in the United States.

국내 데이터사이언스 학위 및 교과 운영 현황과 문헌정보학과로의 함의 (Data Science Degree and Curriculum in Korea and its Implications for the Information Field)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 국내 대학에서 수여하는 데이터사이언스 학위 및 교과 운영 현황과 국내외 정보대학의 데이터사이언스 교과 운영 현황을 이해함으로써, 국내 문헌정보학과의 데이터사이언스 교과 운영에 대한 함의를 살펴보는 것이다. 데이터 수집의 대상은 2022년 한국교육개발원에서 공개한 국내 439개 학교의 데이터사이언스 학위였다. 분석의 대상은 데이터사이언스 학위를 운영하는 국내의 대학교, 단과대학, 학부, 학과, 세부 전공, 연계전공, 융합전공, 마이크로 학위, 나노 학위, 트랙, 모듈, 산학협동 과정 등이었다. 교과 분석을 위해서 국내 데이터사이언스 학위 과정에 개설된 1,148개의 교과 명을 분석했다. 국내 문헌정보학과 학사 과정의 1,325개의 교과 명을 분석해서 국내 문헌정보학과의 데이터사이언스 교과 운영 현황을 확인했다. 국내의 데이터사이언스 학위는 개론, 기술, 실습, 응용, 심화 교과 등 데이터사이언스 교과를 골고루 개설하고 있었다. 국내 문헌정보학과는 데이터사이언스와 관련된 교과 개설에 적극적이지 않았으나, 개설한 경우에는 데이터사이언스 개론, 데이터베이스, 데이터시각화, 데이터큐레이션, 메타데이터, 빅데이터, 정보 기술 교과가 개설되어 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 문헌정보학의 관점에서 데이터사이언스 학위 과정, 세부 전공, 연계전공, 융합전공, 마이크로 학위, 나노 학위, 연계 트랙, 모듈, 산학협동과정 등의 교과의 개발 및 개정에 필요한 논의의 기초 자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.

미국 정보 대학의 데이터사이언스 학위 현황 연구 (Degree Programs in Data Science at the School of Information in the States)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 문헌정보학 프로그램이 있는 정보 대학에서 수여하는 데이터사이언스 학위의 현황을 알아보는 것이다. 데이터 수집의 대상은, 2022년 미국도서관협회의 인가를 받은 문헌정보학 프로그램이 있는 64개의 대학에서 수여하는 데이터사이언스 학위였다. 분석의 대상은 각 대학의 데이터사이언스 학위 과정, 부전공, 세부 전공, 수료증, 취업 후 예상 진로, 취업률 등이었다. 교과 분석을 위해 미국 정보 대학에서 제시한 교과목 명, 교과 설명, 중점 교육 분야를 분석했다. 데이터사이언스를 학위 명으로 개설한 대학은 총 8개 정보 대학의 12개 학위였으며, 학사 학위 5개, 석사 학위 6개, 박사 학위 1개였다. 개설된 교과의 주제는 데이터사이언스 입문, 정보검색, 데이터마이닝, 데이터베이스, 데이터와 인문학, 머신 러닝, 메타데이터, 연구 방법론, 데이터 분석 및 시각화, 실습/캡스톤, 윤리 및 보안, 이용자, 정책, 큐레이션 및 관리였다. 대부분의 대학은 전통적인 문헌정보학 교과를 개설하지 않고 있었다. 정보 대학이 제시한 졸업 후 예상 취업 진로는 데이터사이언티스트, 데이터 엔지니어, 데이터 분석가 등이었다. 본 연구의 결과는 정보학의 관점에서 데이터사이언스 학위 과정, 세부 전공, 수료증 또는 교과과정 개발 및 개정을 위한 논의에 활용될 수 있는 기초 자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.

ALA인가 문헌정보학 학위 과정의 데이터 사서 양성과 관련된 교과목의 강의계획서 분석 (An Examination of the Course Syllabi Related to Data Librarian in the ALA-accredited Library and Information Science Degree Programs)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 2023년 미국도서관협회(American Library Association, ALA)인가 문헌정보학 학위과정에서 제공하는 데이터 사서와 관련된 교과목의 강의계획서의 내용을 분석하는 것이다. 2023년 ALA인가 문헌정보학과에서 공개한 강의계획서 184개를 수집하였다. 데이터 사서의 주요 역량인 데이터 관리와 큐레이션, 데이터 분석 및 시각화, 메타데이터, 정보 서비스, 도서관 경영, 연구 방법론, 학술 도서관, 컴퓨터 프로그래밍, 데이터베이스 과목 등을 식별하였다. 이에 기반하여 데이터 사서와 관련된 강의계획서 127개를 식별한 후, 강의계획서의 내용을 집중 분석하였다. 구체적으로 교과목 명, 교과목 목표, 교과목 설명, 교육 내용, 과제(assignments)를 집중 분석하였다. 데이터 사서 양성을 위한 국내외 교과목의 비교를 위하여 국외 61개 문헌정보학과에서 개설한 교과목 명 3,045개, 교과목 설명 2,559개와 국내 37개 문헌정보학과에서 개설한 1,330개의 교과목 명을 수집 및 분석하였다. 국내외 문헌정보학과 모두 데이터 사서 양성을 위한 교과목을 골고루 개설하였음을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 향후 문헌정보학과에서 데이터 사서 양성을 위한 교육 과정의 개발 및 개정 시 논의의 시작점이 될 수 있는 기초 자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.

간호대학(학과) 학사 편입과정 졸업생의 실태와 과정의 상대적 효율성 분석 (Profile of the accelerated second-degree bachelor of science in nursing program graduates and analysis of relative efficiency of programs)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the profile of graduates from accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs and to analyze the relative efficiency of nursing colleges using data envelopment analysis. Methods: An online survey link was emailed to the deans of nursing colleges, who were then asked to send the link to graduates of the respective colleges. The survey questionnaire included demographics, reasons for applying to the accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, employment after graduation, and nursing career satisfaction. Results: Sixty-two graduates of the accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing program responded to the survey. The mean age at admission was 24.28 (± 3.01) years. Reasons for applying to the accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing program were primarily increasing job security and using it as a stepping stone to another career. Nursing career job satisfaction was 4.81 (± 1.07) and more than 82% recommended this program. The data envelopment analysis found the average efficiency score to be 0.84 (± 0.20) and 4 nursing colleges to be relatively efficient. Conclusion: The accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing program can be considered to be an effective means to produce quality nurses with non-nursing bachelor degrees in a short time; however, outcomes of this program need to be systematically monitored to maintain quality level. Through this, competent nurses with knowledge of adjacent studies will be added to the nursing workforce.

간호학생의 비판적 사고능력에 관한 연구 (A Study of Critical Thinking Ability of Associate and Baccalaurate Degree Nursing Students)

  • This descriptive study was done to investigate the critical thinking ability of senior nursing students in two types of nursing education programs : associate and baccalaureate programs. Data were conveniently collected from 159 associate degree nursing (ADN)students and 158 baccalaureate degree nursing(BSN)students. All schools were the Ministry of Education accredited and located in Seoul City and Kyung gi Province. These data were collected by self reporting questionaire given over two months from March to May, 1995. The subjects completed the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) and a demographic questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test with the SAS program. The results of this study are as follows 1. The mean of critical thinking ability of the ADN students was 42.69. 2. The mean of critical thinking ability of the BSN students was 47.68. 3. There was significant difference in the WGCTA scores between the ADN and the BSN students (t=7.38 p<0.001) 4. This study suggests that critical thinking ability may increase with higher levels of nursing education. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed.

원주시 성인남녀의 지역복지서비스 필요도 및 관련요인 (A Study on Welfare Service Needs and Related Factors in Wonju City)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that explain the degree of need for community welfare services designed for the residents of Wonju City. For this purpose, we identify five categories of community welfare services : employment no income supporting programs, residence supporting programs, public health programs, family programs and welfare facilities for enhancing quality of life. The data come from 234 adults living in Wonju city, Major findings can be summarized as follows. Firstly, we find that participants are well aware of needs for community welfare service, and that the degree of need for public health services is the highest among the five types of welfare programs. Secondly, we find differential effects of the individual factors such as predisposing, enabling, and need, and the community factors such as quality of environmental facilities which make daily lives convenient, and residential region. Particularly, environmental facilities appear to have a strong association with high needs for the majority of welfare services. Finally, differences between urban and rural areas are still observed. These results suggest that the responsibility of Wonju city for providing diverse and adequate welfare services should be emphasized. Priorities for welfare policies based on the empirical data are also taken into consideration in the process of developing community welfare policies.

Students' college life adaptation experiences in the accelerated second-degree bachelor of science in nursing program in South Korea

  • Purpose: South Korea has expanded its accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing program to resolve its supply-demand imbalance in nursing, although how these students are adapting to and performing in college after admission remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct an in-depth exploration of how Korean accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science nursing students interact with society and adapt to college life for establishing further supportive educational policies and programs. Methods: Participants comprised 20 South Korean accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing students. The data were collected via online or offline in-depth interviews and analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory and by applying a constant comparative method to achieve theoretical saturation. Results: The core category, derived using open, axial, and selective coding, was "process of the uncharted journey toward a new dream." The participants' college adaptation processes were found to involve three phases: trial and error, adjustment, and acceptance and integration. Conclusion: These findings can be used to develop, apply, test, and improve various support programs for accelerated second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing students and to advance the nursing profession by nurturing a workforce with diverse academic backgrounds and faster college life adaptation.

Role of University on Undergraduate Employment by Disciplines

  • This study starts from the perspective that preparing students for employment is the most important role of undergraduate degree programs. Therefore, we examine the determinants of undergraduate employment, especially highlighting the differences by disciplines. We classify 28 factors into five categories such as personal attributes, entrance attributes, students’ employment-related activities, regular curriculum and employability programs provided by universities. This study is based on data from 7,616 students from a Korean university over four and half years. Findings reveal that university efforts are crucial in engineering. Only exchange programs and employment programs have an impact on science. There are no specific factors in humanities and social science. Grade point average and students’ efforts are important in business. Face-to-face coaching in employability support programs is effective for securing employment except in science disciplines. The study results do not point to the absence of a role of university even in the low employment disciplines. Rather, the issue is that of an over-supply of graduates exceeding job offers that results from the worldwide expansion of higher education services.

가정전문간호사의 환자·가족교육 수행정도와 저해요인 (Performance and Impediments to Patient and Family Education among Home Health Care Nurses)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to provide basic data necessary to develop education programs and educational services for home care by investigating the degree of patient and family education among home health care nurses. Methods: Data collection was carried out with 145 people from 47 institutions that agreed to participate in the research. A total of 128 questionnaires were received, of which 122 were analyzed. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Results: The item on which education was most frequently delivered was intravenous injection speed control (66.4%), whereas the item requiring the longest teaching period was pressure ulcer care. The average degree of impediment perceived by home care nurses was 2.82 out of 5. Conclusion: Medical institutions should develop educational materials and programs that reflect the characteristics and degree of home health care needed. Repeated research, including that by medical institutions, on the degree and impeding factors related to patient and family education performance of home health care nurses should be conducted. Moreover, medical institutions should investigate the nursing and educational needs of patients and families who received home health care service.
