The ultrasonic method, which is well known as nondestructive test method, is widely used to evaluate the material damage due to degradation. However, this method is just used for measuring the crack size and the thickness loss of the tube. The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of the ultrasonic technique for the evaluation of marine diesel engine exhaust valve and to suggest the correlation between the ultrasonic characteristics and valve degradation. From the evaluation of the results obtained, the technique of using the ultrasonic property was founds to be a efficient method to degree of marine diesel engine exhaust valve by nondestructive test.
The present work studies a nondestructive evaluation of the degradation of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel using a magnetic method based on the existence of the peaks of reversible permeability (RP) in the differential magnetization around the coercive force. The apparatus is based on detection of the voltage induced in a coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to the frequency of the AC perturbing field. Results obtained for the reversible permeability and Vickers hardness on the aged samples showed the peak interval of reversible permeability (PIRP) and Vickers hardness decrease as aging time increased. The correlation between Vickes hardness and the PIRP could be used to evaluate degradation of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel.
Recently, natural disasters due to abnormal climates are frequently outbreaking, and there is rapid increase of damage to aged agricultural infrastructure. As agricultural infrastructure facilities are in contact with water throughout the year and the number of them is significant, it is important to build a maintenance management system. Especially, the current maintenance management system of pumping and drainage stations among the agricultural facilities has the limit of lack of objectivity and management personnel. The purpose of this study is to develop a performance evaluation model using the factors related to performance degradation of pumping and drainage facilities and to predict the performance of the facilities in response to climate change. In this study, we focused on the pumping and drainage stations belonging to each climatic zone separated by the Korea geographical climatic classification system. The performance evaluation model was developed using three different statistical models of POLS, RE, and LASSO. As the result of analysis of statistical models, LASSO was selected for the performance evaluation model as it solved the multicollinearity problem between variables, and showed the smallest MSE. To predict the performance degradation due to climate change, the climate change response variables were classified into three categories: climate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. The performance degradation prediction was performed at each facility using the developed performance evaluation model and the climate change response variables.
In order to develop the evaluation methods of degradation for the Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel, which is in use for turbine rotor in nuclear power plant, the degraded materials were prepared by simulated degradation methods. The result of impact test and fatigue crack growth test shows that the FATT(Fracture Appearance Transition Temperature) and fatigue crack growth rate increased with the increase of degradation. And the result of new electrochemical polarization test method was suggested for the evaluating FATT, fatigue crack growth exponent and coefficient C values based on the results of relationship between corrosion current density(Icorr) & FATT, and the m & C and Icorr.
The ferritic 2.25CrMo steel has been used for high temperature structure applications such as turbine rotors, boilers and pressure vessels in fossil plant and petroleum chemical facilities. However, this steel is known to result in aging degradation due to temper embrittlement, carbide induced brittleness and softening of matrix after long time exposure to high temperature. This research investigated the microstructural and mechanical changes after artificial degradation treatment and evaluated the degree of degradation by several nondestructive methods. The decrease of electrical resistivity and increase of magnetic Barkhausen noise(RMS voltage) with increasing aging time were observed. The change of electrical resistivity and Barkhausen noise showed a good correlation with the ductile-brittle transition temperature.
In this study, LCC(Life Cycle Cost) evaluation technique is used for the purpose of accumulation of basic data required for such integrative system construction. We predicted the degradation time of concrete and repair material by neutralization through FEM analysis, and utilized the result for LCC evaluation It turned out that the repair method of construction in the most economical initial measure against degradation and a durable period can be chosen through the LCC evaluation in consideration of the degradation prediction using FEM analysis and the initial construction expense in a durable period and repair expense, and the number of repair times.
Ths study was peformed to evaluate the degree of degradation and safety of a small agricultural reservoir, Kosam Reservoir, in Kyungki Province. Evaluation was done by the program developed by the authors. Results of the study are as follows: 1) Although many burrows were found in downstream side of embankment and cracks were found in wall joining spillway, it appeared that degree of degradation of embankment was in good conditions. 2) Compressive strengths of concrete of crest, side channel, chute floor of spillway were in poor condition. But it appeared that overall degree of degradation of structures was in medium condition based on the criteria of the evaluation system 3) From the analysis of slope stability, safety factor of downstream slope was over 3.3 for the worst condition, such as flood and high water level and that of upstream slope was also over 3.6 for rapid drawdown. In case of earthquake, safety factors were over 2.5 for all conditions. Therefore embankment slopes of Kosam Reservoir were very stable for normal and earthquake condition. 4) As upon assumed failure of embankment of Kosam Reservoir, degree of damage was estimated to be very serious because of many loss of life and properties in the downstream area. 5) Overall grade of safety of Kosam Reservoir was in good condition. Therefore safety was considered to be "No problems" at the present time but further degradation may be proceeded partly and continuously as time goes by.e goes by.
Nondestructive evaluation for mechanical degradation of ultrasuper-critical (USC) heat-resistance steel, which is attractive to the next generation of power plants is studied by magnetic reversible permeability. The interrelationship between reversible permeability and high-temperature mechanical degradation has been investigated by precise measurement of permeability nondestructively. Also, the effects of microstructural variation on reversible permeability are discussed. Isothermal aging was observed to coarsen the tempered carbides ($Cr_{23}C_6$), generated the intermetallic phases ($Fe_2W$), and grow rapidly during aging. The dislocation density also decreases steeply within lath interior. The peak to peak interval (PPI) of reversible permeability profile decreased drastically during the initial 500 h aging period, and was thereafter observed to decrease only slightly. The variation in PPI is closely related to the decrease in the number of pinning sites and the degradation in tensile strength.
It is very important to evaluate material degradation like temper and carbide embrittlements to secure the reliable and efficient operational conditions and to prevent brittle failure in service. The extent of material deterioration can be accurately evaluated by mechanical test such as impact test or creep test. But it is almost impossible to sample a large specimen from in-service plants. Thus, the material degradation evaluation by a non-destructive method is earnestly required. Recently the non-destructive test technique which uses the grain boundary etching characteristics owing to the variation of material structures has been proposed. However the program for material degradation evaluation using the grain boundary etching method(GEM) in Windows 98 domain doesnt be developed now. The aims of this paper are to develop the program and to complete the new master curve equations for the evaluation of material degradation on in-serviced high temperature components.
In this paper, the nonlinear behavior of ultrasonic wave in partially degraded material is considered. For this aim, FDM(finite difference method) model for the nonlinear wave equation was developed with the restriction to the 1-D longitudinal wave motion and how the partial degradation in material contributes to the detected nonlinear parameter was analyzed quantitatively. In order to verify the rightness of this simulation method, the relation between the detected nonlinear parameter and the continuous distribution of degradation obtained from simulation was compared with experiment results and the simulation and experiment results showed similar tendency. It can be known from simulation result that the degree of degradation, the range of degradation and the continuous distribution of degradation have strong correlation with the detected nonlinear parameter. As it was possible in these simulations that only special part is assumed as degraded one, the quantitative evaluation of partially degraded material may be obtained by using this method.
