Since the enzymatic degradation of microbial poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate] (P(3HB-co-3HV)) initially occurs by a surface erosion process, a degradation behavior could be controlled by the change of surface property. In order to control the rate of enzymatic degradation, plasma gas discharge and blending techniques were used to modify the surface of microbial P(3HB-co-3HV). The surface hydrophobic property of P(3HB-co-3HV) film was introduced by CF$_3$H plasma exposure. Also, the addition of small amount of polystyrene as a non-degradable polymer with lower surface energy to P(3HB-co-3HV) has been studied. The enzymatic degradation was carried out at 37 $^{\circ}C$ in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) in the presence of an extracellular PHB depolymerase purified from Alcaligenes facalis T1. Both results showed the significant retardation of enzymatic erosion due to the hydrophobicity and the enzyme inactivity of the fluorinated- and PS-enriched surface layers.
The remaining life estimation for the aged components in power plants as well as chemical plants are very important because mechanical properties of the components are degraded with time of service exposure in the high temperature. Since it is difficult to take specimens from the operating components to evaluate mechanical properties of components, accelerated aging technique are needed to estimate and analyse the material degradation. In the this study, test materials with 4 different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. And tensile test, $k_{IC}$ test, hardness test and Scanning Electron Microscope analysis were performed in order to evaluate the degradation of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels.
Epoxidized polybutadiene (EPB) was prepared by polybutadiene (PB) with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA) in homogeneous solution. EPB was blended with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) up to 30 wt% by solution-precipitation procedure. The thermal decomposition of PHB/EPB blends was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The thermograms of PHB/EPB blends contained a two-step degradation process, while that of pure PHB sample exhibited only one-step degradation process. This degradation behavior of PHB/EPB blends, which have a higher thermal stability as measured by maximum decomposition temperature and residual weight, is probably due to crosslinking reactions of the epoxide groups in the EPB component with the carboxyl chain ends of PHB fragments during the degradation process, and the occurrence of such reactions can be assigned to the exothermic peaks in their DTA thermograms.
It was found that the lateral stiffness changes obvious at the transfer position of the section configuration from SRC to RC. This particular behavior leads to that the transfer columns become as the important elements in SRC-RC hybrid structures. A comprehensive study was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of SRC-RC transfer columns based on a low cyclic loading test of 16 transfer columns compared with 1 RC column. Test results shows three failure modes for transfer columns, which are shear failure, bond failure and bend failure. Its seismic behavior was completely analyzed about the failure mode, hysteretic and skeleton curves, bearing capacity deformation ability, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation. It is further determined that displacement ductility coefficient of transfer columns changes from 1.97 to 5.99. The stiffness of transfer columns are at the interval of SRC and RC, and hence transfer columns can play the role of transition from SRC to RC. All specimens show similar discipline of stiffness degradation and the process can be divided into three parts. Some specimens of transfer column lose bearing capacity swiftly after shear cracking and showed weak energy dissipation ability, but the others show better ability of energy dissipation than RC column.

STS316L had been used as the structural material for energy environmental facilities, because austenite stainless steels like 316L have superior mechanical properties of which toughness, ductility, corrosion resistant and etc. However, those welded structures are receiving severe damage due to increasing of the aged degradation. Most studies until now have been carried out against fatigue behaviors of weldments, and were not well studied on nondestructive evaluation methods. In this study, the fatigue crack propagation behavior of STS316L weldment usually used for vessels of the nuclear power plant was investigated. Also, the degradation characteristics of 316L stainless steel weldments were evaluated by the ultrasonic parameter such as ultrasonic velocity, attenuation factor and time-frequency analysis. The results of this study can be used as a basic data for the prediction of the fatigue crack life of weldments structures without disjointing or stopping service of structures in service.

Concrete is a suitable construction material for long-term structure, however, it is needed to understand the calcium leaching damage caused by exposure to underground pure water for a long time. In this paper, it is experimentally investigated that the characteristics of flexural behavior in RC member damaged by calcium leaching degradation. From the test results, when calcium leaching is happened, yielding load and flexural rigidity is reduced, neutral axis depth and displacement is increased. That is, calcium leaching degradation adversely affects RC member performance. And, when the mineral admixture is used in the calcium leaching environment, it is considered that the optimal replacement ratio should be prepared according to the type of mineral admixture.

Intermittent CSR testing was used to investigate the degradation of a NBR O-ring, and also the prediction of its life-time. An intermittent CSR jig was designed taking into consideration the O-ring's environment under use. Degradation of O-rings by thermal aging was observed between $40^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$. O-rings showed non-linear degradation behavior under $80^{\circ}C$. At 20% of failure condition, predicted life-times were 32.5 years by Arrhenius plot and 22.6 years by WLF plot.

As a part of enhancing the performance of wood-plastic composites (WPC), polypropylene (PP)/ nanoclay (NC)/ wood flour (WF) nanocomposites were prepared using melt blending and injection molding process to evaluate their thermal stability. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was employed to investigate thermal degradation kinetics of the nanocomposites both dynamic and isothermal conditions. Dynamic scans of the TGA showed an increased thermal stability of the nanocomposites at moderate wood flour concentrations (up to 20 phr, percentage based on hundred percent resin) while it decreased with the addition of 30 phr wood flour. The activation energy $(E_a)$ of thermal degradation of nanocomposites increased when nanoclay was added and the concentration of wood flour increased. Different equations were used to evaluate isothermal degradation kinetics using the rate of thermal degradation of the composites, expressed as weight loss (%) from their isothermal TGA curves. Degradation occurred at faster rate in the initial stages of about 60 min., and then proceeded in a gradual manner. However, nanocomposites with wood flour of 30 phr heated at $300^{\circ}C$ showed a drastic difference in their degradation behavior, and reached almost a complete decomposition after 40 min. of the isothermal heating. The degree of decomposition was greater at higher temperatures, and the residual weight of isothermal degradation of nanocomposites greatly varied from about 10 to 90%, depending on isothermal temperatures. The isothermal degradation of nanocomposites also increased their thermal stability with the addition of 1 phr nanoclay and of wood flour up to 20 phr. But, the degradation of PP100/NC1/MAPP3/WF30 nanocomposites with 30 phr wood flour occurs at a faster rate compared to those of the others, indicating a decrease in their thermal stability.
