The objective of this study is to adjust the roll gap for the dimension accuracy of bar in hot bar rolling process considering roll wear. In this study hot bar rolling processes for round and oval passes have been investigated. In order to predict the roll wear, the wear model is reformulated as an incremental form and then wear depth of roll is calculated at each deformation step on contact area using the results of finite element analysis, such as relative sliding velocity and normal pressure at contact area. Archard's wear model was applied to predict the roll wear. To know the effects of thermal softening of DCI (Ductile Cast Iron) roll material according to operating conditions, high temperature micro hardness test is executed and a new wear model has been proposed by considering the thermal softening of DCI roll expressed in terms of the main tempering curve. The new technique developed in this study for adjusting roll gap can give more systematically and economically feasible means to improve the dimension accuracy of bar with full usefulness and generality.
In many dynamic seals such as lip seal and compression packings, it is well known that wear occur at the surface of heat treated steel shaft as results of the intervened wear particle. It is widely understood that the dominant wear mechanism related in sealing surfaces is abrasive wear. However, little analytical and experimental studies about this problems have been done until now. In this paper, a contact analysis is carried out using MARC to investigate the wear mechanism in contact seal applications considering elastomeric seal, a elastic perfect-plastic micro-spherical particle and steel surface. Deformed seal shapes, contact and von-Mises stress distributions for various particle sizes and interference are showed. The maximum von-Mises stress within steel shaft was exceeded its yield strength and plastic deformation occurred at steel surface. Therefore, the sealing surface can be also worn by sub-surface fatigue due to wear particles together with well known abrasion. The numerical methods and models used in this paper can be applied in design of dynamic sealing systems, and further intensive studies are required.
This paper presents the effects of cryogenic temperature on the wear behavior of 22MnB5 blank under cold stamping. After immersing the blank in liquid nitrogen (LN2) for 10 min, a strip drawing test was performed within 10 s. The hardness was measured using the Rockwell hardness test, which increased from 165 HV at 20℃ to 192 HV at cryogenic temperature. The strip drawing test with 22MnB5 blank and SKD61 tool steel shows that for the different wear mechanisms on the tool surface with respect to temperature; adhesive wear is dominant at 20℃, but abrasive wear is the main mechanism at cryogenic temperature. As the friction test is repeated, sticking gradually increases on the tool surface at 20℃, whereas the scratch increases at cryogenic temperature. For the friction behavior, the friction coefficient rapidly increases when adhesive wear occurs, and it occurs more frequently at 20℃. The results for nanoindentation near the worn blank surface indicate a difference of 1.3 GPa at 20℃ and 0.8 GPa at cryogenic temperature compared to the existing hardness, indicating increased deformation by friction at 20℃. This occurs because thermally activated energy available to move the dislocation decreases with decreasing temperature.
The sliding wear behaviors of Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel rod were investigated using two support springs with convex and concave shapes in room temperature air and water. The main focus is to compare the wear behavior of various test variables such as slip amplitude, environment, contact contours with different spring shape and a number of cycles. The results indicated that wear volume and maximum wear depth increased with slip amplitude in both air and water, but their trends tended to change according to the spring shapes and test environments. In air condition, the wear volume was controlled by wear debris behavior generated on worn surface. As a result, final wear volume and maximum wear depth decreased if a ratio of protruded wear volume to worn area $(D_p)$ would be saturated to specific value. This is because wear particle layer could accommodate large strain by accumulating and transforming wear particle layer. However, in water condition, metal-to metal contact was more dominant and wear volume was greatly affected by changed mechanical behavior between contact surfaces since wear debris should be generated after repeated plastic deformation and fracture. After wear test, worn surfaces were examined using optical microscope and SEM and details of wear mechanism were discussed using a ratio of wear volume to worn area $(D_e)$ at each test condition.
In this research, fretting tests were conducted in air to investigate the wear characteristics of fuel cladding materials with the fretting parameters such as normal load, slip amplitude, frequency and the number of cycles. A high frequency fretting wear tester was designed for this experiment by KAERI. After the experiments, the wear volume and the shape of wear contour were measured by the surface roughness tester. Tribologically transformed structures(TTS) were analysed by means of optical and scanning electron microscopes to identify the main wear mechanisms. The results of this study showed that the wear volume were increased with increasing slip amplitude, and the shape of wear contour was transformed V-type to W-type. Also, it was found that the critical slip amplitude was 168${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. These phenomena mean that wear mechanism transformed partial slip to gross slip to accelerate wear volume. The wear depth increased with an increase of friction coefficient due to increase of normal load and frequency. The fretting wear mechanisms were believed that, after adhesion and surface plastic deformation occurred by relative sliding motion on the contact between two specimens, TTS creation was induced by surface strain hardening and wear debris were detached from the contact surface which were produced by the micro crack propagation and creation.

Ductile cast iron is widely used for many automotive components due to its high wear resistance and fatigue resistance in addition to the low cost of fabrication. The improvement of wear resistance and fatigue properties is key to the life time extension and performance increase of the automobile parts. Surface nanocrystallization is a very efficient way of improving the performance of materials including the wear- and fatigue-resistance. Shot peening treatment, as one of the popular and economic surface modification methods, has been widely applied to various materials. In this study, ductile cast iron specimens were ultrasonic shot peening (USP) treated for 5 to 30 min using different ball size. The microstructures were then microscopically analyzed for determination of the microstructural evolution. After the USP treatment, the hardness of pearlite and ferrite increased, in which ball size is more effective than treatment time. With USP treatment, the graphite nodule count near the surface was decreased with grain refinement. The lager balls resulted in an increased deformation, whereas the smaller balls induced more homogenously refined grains in the deformation layer. In addition, formation of nanoparticles was formed in the surface layer upon USP.
In this work, head-disk interactions are studied when flying height becomes lower than laser bump height on the landing zone of a disk. With the reduction of the spinning speed in a spin stand, the flying height is decreased under the height of laser bumps. Conventional and padded pico sliders sweep between landing Bone and data zone and, then, the dynamic behavior of the pico sliders and head-disk impacts are investigated using AE and stiction/friction signals. After 200n cycle-sweep tests, bearing analysis and AFM analysis indicate that there are some signs of wear and plastic deformation in the landing zone of a disk, although AE and stiction/friction signals are not significantly changed during the sweep tests. The experimental results of this paper suggest that in CSS tests at component level, more rigorous examination methods of wear and plastic deformation might be necessary as flying height becomes getting lower.
This paper explains the die cooling method for improving tool life in the hot forging process. In continuous forming operation such as hot forging process, performed at high speeds, temperature increases of several hundred degrees may be involved. Die hardness was reduced due to thermal softening. Factor of die fracture are wear and plastic deformation of die due to hardness reduction by high temperature. Because die service life was reduced due to this phenomenon during hot forging, quantified data for optimal die cooling method is required. The new developed techniques for predicting tool life applied to estimate the production quantity for a spindle component and these techniques can be applied to improve the tool life in hot forging process
