  • Effect of prior deformation on the sliding wear of the ultra-fine grained (UFG) ferrite-martensite dual phase (DP) steel was investigated. The UFG DP steel was fabricated by the ECAP and subsequent intercritical annealing. The steel was cold rolled before the wear test, and the effect of the prior deformation on the wear was examined. The wear tests were carried out at various loads against a bearing steel ball. The wear rate of the UFG DP steel that did not experience the prior deformation was higher than that of the coarse-grained (CG) DP steel, because of more severe surface shear deformation. The wear rate of the specimens with prior deformation was much higher than that of the specimen without prior deformation. The deformed CG DP specimen showed higher rate than the deformed UFG DP specimen, and the rate-variation of the CG DP steel was much bigger under the same test condition.

  • Dry sliding wear behavior of pure Fe and Cu which have BCC and FCC crystal structure, respectively, was investigated. The wear characteristics of the pure metals with different crystal structure were compared. Dry sliding wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disk wear tester at various loads under the constant sliding speed condition of 0.15 m/s against a silica ball at room temperature. Sliding distance was fixed as 600 m for all wear tests. Wear rate of a specimen was calculated by dividing the weight loss of the specimen after the test by the specific gravity and sliding distance. Worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM. The wear of both pure Fe and Cu proceeded with surface deformation, resulting in similar wear rates despite of their structure difference under the current test conditions. Wear rates of both metals were low if the surface deformation due to wear forms thick surface-deformation layer that is strain hardened beneath the wearing surface. The pure Cu specimens showed a lot of oxides on the worn surface when tested at low loads less than 5 N, which resulted in very low wear rate.

  • Control of back-up roll deformation and wear profile in plate rolling is important not only for enhancement of the structural precision of mill, but also for improving the yield and rolling operation. in the heavy plate mill, there have been strong demands for upgrading back up roll operation technology. In order to satisfy these demands, it is essential to develop the backup roll deformation analysis models and wear profile prediction models. This paper gives a general description of the backup roll deformation and wear model, simulation result for deformation analysis and wear profile.

  • This paper describes about the estimation method of die lift by wear and plastic deformation in hot forging process. The thermal load and the thermal softening are happened by the high temperature in hot forging process. Tool lift decreases considerably due to the softening of the surface layer of a tool caused by high thermal load and long contact time between tool and billet. Also, tool life is to a large extent limited by wear, heat crack and plastic deformation in hot forging process. Above all, the main factors which affects die accuracy and tool lift are wear and the plastic deformation of a die. The new developed technique for predicting tool life applied to estimate the production quantity for a spindle component and these techniques assist to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • The wear test has been performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of steam generator (SG) tube materials against ferritic stainless steel in water environment. The wear rates of SG tube materials depend on the change of mechanical properties between contact surfaces during wear test. From the subsurface hardness test, Inconel 690 is more work-hardened than Inconel 600 even though these materials have similar hardness values before the wear test. Main cause is due to the difference of stacking fault energy with the chromium content. In water environment, wear mechanism is closely related with the continuous formation and fracture of deformation layers at the contact surfaces.

  • Wear test has been performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of Inconel alloys against ferritic stainless steels in room temperature water. By means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the worn surface and microstructure of subsurface layer have been examined. The wear at steady state conditions result in the formation of 5∼7${\mu}$m thick layers with fragmented microstructure. The thickness of these layers seems to depend on the ability of work hardening and deformation accommodation at the contact areas during wear. Therefore, in room temperature water, the wear rate is closely related with the wear resistance of these fragment microstructure which are generated after severe subsurface deformation.

  • The thermal deformation of the contact seal components has been analyzed using the finite element method. The temperature distributions, the thermal deformations and contact stresses are solved numerically for the contact surface with wear coning effects. The thermal deformation is always shown to distort the sealing surface along the radius of the seal ring. The results show that the deformations of inner radius side are significant compared with those of outer radius. Thus, the thermal deformation due to thermal heatings may promote the coned face wear or wear related thermal cracks at the contacting face of the seal ring component.

  • Hot forging is widely used in the manufacturing of industry machine component. The mechanical, thermal load and thermal softening which are happened by the high temperature in hot forging process. Tool life decreases considerably due to the softening of the surface layer of a tool caused by a high thermal load and long contact time between the tool and billet. Also, tool life is to a large extent limited by wear, heat crack and plastic deformation in hot forging process. These are one of the main factors affecting die accuracy and tool life. That is because hot forging process has many factors influencing tool life, and there was not accurate in-process data. In this research, life prediction of hot forging tool by wear and plastic deformation analysis considering tempering parameter has been carried out for automobile component. The new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • The wear behaviour of steam generator (SG) tubes (Inconel 600 and 690) against support materials (405 and 409 ferritic stainless steels) has been experimentally studied in room temperature water using reciprocating wear apparatus with tube-an-plate configuration. The results showed that the wear rate of Inconel 690 was lower than that of lnconel 600 with increasing normal loads and sliding amplitudes. Also, plastic deformation layers appear below the surface of both SG tubes, which have a specific thickness and are small compared with their grain size. This means that wear rate of SG tubes in water condition is closely related to the formation and fracture of plastic deformation layers.
