White clover (Trifolium repens L) gives rise to either weak persistence or overdominance in the pastures. To get information on grazing method to surmount the problem, the experiment was done to measure the effect of infrequent, frequent and their alternations on harvest yield and morphological characteristics of the clover. Individual plants of Regal, Louisiana S-l, Grasslands Huia, and Aberystwyth S184 were grown in 22cm plastic pot containing a 2: 1: 1 soil: sand: Peat moss mixture for 27 days after transplanting 50-day seedlings raised on 3cm pots, and then their all fully expanded leaves are trimmed. Defoliation treatments were forced every 1 (CC, frequent), 4 week(RR,infrequent) or their alternations(CR, RC) after 8 weeks from the trimming. To analyze the treatment effects, plants were sampled on 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks after the trimming. Harvest yield of infrequent defoliation (RR) was higher than that of frequent defoliation (CC). Leaf area and no. of leaves per plant, petiole length and stolon length per plant, moreover, showed the similar result to the yield but stolon length and leaf area per g were reverse. The alternation of infre-quent and then frequent defoliation (RC) had greater yield than that of their reverse (CR) although both alternations showed intermediate ones compared to CC and RR. Morphological characteristics, furthermore, related to the clover leaf were immediately changed by alternations of defoliation inter-val(RC and CR) while those done to the stolon were lasted longer thereafter(RC and CR). Harvest yields in RC and CR were positively correlated to leaf area and no. of leaves or stolon length per plant but negatively done to leaf area and stolon length per g. It is concluded that weak persistence or overdominance of white clover in pasture can be controlled by alternation of infrequent and then frequent defoliation or reverse.
Weak persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) under continuous grazing management has been limited its availability in the mixture with grasses. The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of defoliation interval on the regrowth and morphological characters of the clover cultivars. Individual plants of Regal (large leaf), Grasslands Huia (medium-small leaf) and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf) were grown in 15cm plastic pot containing a 1: 2: 1 soil:sand:Promix mixture for 55 days, and then clipped to remove all fully expanded leaves every 7, 14 or 28 days. For the analysis of the cultivar response, plants were sampled on the final harvest date(0), and 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after the final harvest date. Harvested dry weight of all cultivars declined as defoliation interval was increased, and that of Regal was the highest compared to the other cultivars. During the regrowing period, increase of total plant dry weight was due to that of leaf and petiole dry weight, and that of Osceola was greater than the others. Although total leaf area and mean single leaf area were increased during the regrowing period, they were reduced with increased defoliation interval and those of Osceola were the greatest until 14-days regrowth. S184 possessed the most number of leaves and Osceola did the longest petiole since 14-days regrowth although the more defoliation, the less nunber of leaves per plant and the shorter petiole. Stolon length and growing tips of all cultivars increased steeply during regrowth, while they were decreased with increased defoliation interval and those of S184 were the highest. More frequent defoliation had detrimental effects on regrowth of white clover, although larger leaf type was productive but less persistent in a mixture with grasses than smaller leaf type.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the unexpected early loss of leaves on a newly-bred kiwifruit on the regrowth of axillary buds the current season and the early growth and development the following year.METHODS AND RESULTS: The vines were defoliated on Jul. 18, Aug. 16, and Sep. 17 in 2012 and on Jul. 16, Aug. 13, and Sep. 12 in 2013. The vines were defoliated 0 (control), 50, and 100% of the total number of leaves on a vine. The regrowth of axillary buds at 30 days after defoliation increased in proportion to defoliation degrees regardless of the defoliated time. Defoliation the previous season did not influence percent budbreak the next season. Percentage of floral shoots of the control vines was 27.4%, each bearing 2-3 flowers. In those vines defoliated 100% in August and September, however, percent floral shoots and number of flowers significantly reduced.CONCLUSION(S): Defoliation in July, August, and September didnot affect percent budbreak the following year regardless of degrees of defoliation. A 100% defoliation in August and September significantly reduced flowering the following year compared to the control; that in August resulted in no floral buds at all.
This study was carried out to find out the effects of date and number of defoliation by different seeding date on growth and yield of perilla. Saeyuepsildlkkae was seeded from April 30 to June 30 at 20 days interval and defoliated from June 30 to Aug. 15 with different defoliation number. 1. Days to emergence, flowering, and maturing were not significantly influenced by defoliation, but those were shortened as seeding date was delayed. The interaction between defoliation and seeding date showed no significant difference. 2. Stem length, number of nodes on main stem, and weight of dry stem were not significantly affected by defoliation, but those were decreased as seeding date was delayed. 3. Yield of fresh loaves was not significantly influenced by seeding date up to May 20, but markedly decreased by the later seeding date. 4. Cluster length and number of cluster per plant were not affected by seeding date, but number of capsules per cluster was decreased from 32 to 25 and 1,000 grain weight was increased from 3.42 to 4.62g as seeding date was delayed. 5. Grain yield was not significantly affected by defoliation and seeding date up to June 10, but markedly decreased by seeding date June 30.
This study was carried out to investigate the influence of defoliation by Marssonina blotch (Diplocarpon mali Harada et Sawamura) on vegetative growth and fruit quality in 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree. Soluble solid contents decreased when the defoliation percentage by Marssonina blotch was over 10% before the end of September, and fruit weight decreased when percentage of defoliation was over 30%. Fruit red color and starch contents tend to decrease as percentage of defoliation near the fruit increased. Return bloom, fruit weight, and shoot growth the following year tend to decrease as percentage of defoliation increased. Photosynthetic rate of healthy leaves in bourse shoot during the end of September was maintained about $10{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, effects in increasing fruit growth and soluble solid contents after the end of September. Photosynthetic rates for the damaged leaf, damaged area was over 50% on the leaf surface, while 30% of the photosynthetic rates of healthy leaf are without damage applied with Marssonina blotch at the end of September. The results show that the decrease of fruit quality in defoliation treatments may be caused by the decrease of starch contents in fruit, and that was caused by the photosynthetic rates of leaves near fruit was decreased by Marssonina blotch in the wake of August.
This paper is a third report about the new fungal diseases of economic resource plants in Korea. It contains short descriptions on symptoms, occurrence conditions, pathogen, and some phytopathological notes for each of 10 fungal plant diseases. They are angular leaf spot of Achyranthes japonica by Cercospora achyranthis causing leaf spot and defoliation in the shade of plants, leaf spot of Armoracia lapathifolia by Cercospora armoraciae causing leaf spot to blight from the rainy season to autumn, hypophyllous mold of Dioscorea tokoro by Distocercospora pachyderma causing leaf spot and yellowing, hypophyllous mold of Artemisia spp.by Mycovellosiella ferruginea causing leaf spot and yellowing, angular leaf spot of Aralia elata by Pseudocercospora araliae causing velvety leaf spot and defoliation, hypophyllous mold of Lycium chinense by Pseudocercospora chengtuensis causing velvety leaf spot and defoliation from the rainy season to autumn, angular leaf spot of Diospyros lotus by Pseudocercospora disospyri-morrisianae causing leaf spot and defoliation from summer to autumn, brown leaf spot of Impatiens textori by Pseudocercospora nojimae causing leaf spot to blight from the rainy season, leaf spot of Cephalonoplos segetum by Ramularia cirsii causing leaf spot to blight throughout the growing season, and white mold of Leonurus sibiricus by Ramularia leonuri causing leaf spot to blight mostly in autumn.
The defoliation velocity is tile rate of propagation of a detonation in an explosive. An explosive's velocity of defoliation(VOD) can be used to indicate a number of important characteristics regarding the product's performance under specific field and test conditions. Also, it is useful quality monitoring technique and call be measured accurately and easily at borehole and testing sites. This paper discusses the relevance of the detonation velocity of explosives in blasting. Attempts were made to classify detonation velocities and offer an interpretation of blasting process which will be useful to blasting engineers. But it was found that there is not necessarily a direct relationship between defoliation velocity and explosive quality or efficiency.

This study investigated the influence of seasonal incidence and defoliation degree caused by Marssonina blotch (Diplocarpon mali Harada et Sawamura) on shoot growth and fruit quality of 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree. The occurrence of marssonina blotch in Gunwi region was observed from the mid of July 2009, and percentage of defoliation was about 10% in the end of October. In 2010, that started in the early of June. By the end of September, percentage of defoliation was 20% and it reached 50% in late October. Secondary growth of terminal shoot in 2010 was three times as much as that in 2009. In 2009, the soluble solid contents and the red color (hunter a value) during fruit maturation increased to $13.8^{\circ}Brix$ and 16.2, respectively. In 2010, the soluble solid content during fruit maturation remained in the $12.1-12.6^{\circ}Brix$ range after early October, and the red color began to increase after the end of September when the percentage of defoliation was 20%. As for fruit quality by defoliation degree, the red color decreased when defoliation percentage of bourse shoot at the end of October was more than 30%. Fruit weight and soluble solids also decreased when defoliation percentage was more than 50%. Fruit length and diameter of over 30% defoliation treatments begun to decrease after the middle of August, compared with those of under 30% defoliation treatment. Photosynthetic rate of the leaves that was located at the secondary growth of bourse shoot was similar to that of leaves which was located at the middle of bourse shoot. However, the size and the soluble solid content of fruit were not affected by photosynthesis activities of bourse shoot leaves which was develop in the secondary shoot growth.
Occurrence of diseases in economic resource plants in Korea is poorly known. This paper reports short descriptions on symptom, occurrence condition, pathogen, and some phytopathological notes for each 10 fungal plant diseases new to Korea; leaf spot of Rosa multiflora with Seimatosporium discosioides causing leaf spot and defoliation, leaf blight of Equisetum arvense with Titaeospora equiseti causing leaf spot to leaf blight, leaf blight of Setaria viridis with Phyrenochaeta setariae causing leaf spot of Aster tataricus with Septoria astericola causing leaf spot and black spot, powdery mildew of Clematis fusca var. coreana with Erysiphe ranunculi causing powdery mildew and dwarfing, powder mildew of Ligularia stenocephala with Erysiphe galeopsidis causing powdery mildew and dwarfing, powdery mildew of Phlox subulata with Erysiphe cichoracearum causing powdery mildew and defoliation tar spot of Lonicera japonica with Rhytisma lonicericola causing tar spot and dwarfing, white rust of Pharbitis nil with Albugo ipomoeae-pandulatae causing white rust and deformation, and white rust of Achyranthes japonica with Albugo achyranthis causing white rust and defoliation.
'Sinano Sweet' apple trees were defoliated at intervals of a month from May to October to simulate damage occured by hail and typhoon in Korea, accordingly fruit yield, reserve accumulations and return bloom were investigated. As the more severe defoliation degree was and earlier defoliation time was, fruit weight and fruit yields were more decreased. Fruit weight and yields of 30% defoliated trees, regardless of the defoliation time, showed no significant difference with those of control. Because carbohydrate contents of the 2-year old branches defoliated before August were even lower than those of branches defoliated after September, it was considered that defoliation time is more effective on the carbohydrate content than defoliation degree. Among the trees defoliated before August, 50% defoliated trees at August contained the lowest carbohydrate by 50% of control. Time and degree of defoliation had an effect on the number of flower buds following year. The number of return bloom in trees defoliated from May to July was decreased by delay of defoliation time and was the lowest in trees defoliated at July. On the other hand, it was not have a significant different between control and trees defoliated since August. Relationship between the number of return bloom and carbohydrate reserves showed positive correlation. As a result, it is considered that fruit thinning, when defoliation occurred in the growing season, needs for strengthening the sink function of remained individual fruit effect on fruit enlargement and for increaseing the carbohydrate reserve effect on return bloom.
