Background A pneumatic tourniquet is generally used to achieve a bloodless operation field in hand surgery. However, this has changed with tumescent solution-based wide-awake surgery. This study is a preliminary prospective case series study to elaborate the formula and indications of the tumescent technique in hand surgery without a tourniquet. Methods Seven patients (age range, 4 months to 37 years) underwent hand or upper extremity surgery for conditions such as nerve palsy, electric burn defect, fingertip injury, contracture, constriction ring syndrome, or acrosyndactyly. A "one-per-mil" tumescent solution (epinephrine 1:1,000,000+20 mg lidocaine/50 mL saline) was used to create a bloodless operating field without a tourniquet. Observation was performed to document the amount of solution injected, the operation field clarity, and the postoperative pain. Results The "one per mil" epinephrine solution showed an effective hemostatic effect. The tumescent technique resulted in an almost bloodless operation field in the tendon and in the constriction ring syndrome surgeries, minimal bleeding in the flap and contracture release surgeries, and acceptable bleeding in acrosyndactyly surgery. The amount of solution injected ranged from 5.3 to 60 mL. No patient expressed significant postoperative pain. Flap surgeries showed mixed results. One flap was lost, while the others survived. Conclusions Epinephrine 1:1,000,000 in saline solution is a potential replacement for a tourniquet in hand surgery. Further studies are needed to delineate its safety for flap survival.
Unlike conventional Eddy Current Test (ECT), Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) uses a multiple-frequency current pulse through the excitation coil. In the present study, the detection of subsurface cracks using a specially designed probe that allows the detection of a deeper crack with a relatively small current density has been attempted using the PEC technique. The tested sample is a piece of 304 stainless steel (SS304) with a thickness of 30mm. Small electrical discharge machining (EDM) notches were put in the test sample at different depths from the surface to simulate the subsurface cracks in a pipe. The designed PEC probe consists of an excitation coil and a Hall sensor and can detect a subsurface crack as narrow and shallow as 0.2 mm wide and 2 mm deep. The maximum distance between the probe and the defect is 28 mm. The peak amplitude of the detected pulse is used to evaluate the cracks under the sample surface. In time domain analysis, the greater the crack depth the greater the peak amplitude of the detected pulse. The experimental results indicated that the proposed system has the potential to detect the subsurface cracks in stainless steel plates.

Background: Apoptosis is a process of programmed cell death, and apoptosis defect results in serious diseases such as cancer. Apoptosis induction is one of the key mechanisms of anti-cancer agents. This study was aimed to find anti-prostate cancer compounds from marine-derived fungus Microsporum sp. Results: We found that physcion isolated from the fermentation broth extract of the marine fungus Microsporum sp. strain MFS-YL decreases the cell proliferation of PC3 human prostate cancer cells. Physcion induced cell apoptosis as determined by Annexin V/propidium iodide double staining. Physcion downregulated the anti-apopotoic proteins such as Ras, Bcl-xL, and Bcl-2, whereas upregulated the pro-apoptotic Bax. Physcion also activated caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9. Conclusion: These results suggest that physcion from Microsporum sp. inhibits the proliferation of PC3 human prostate cancer cells via the pathway leading to apoptotic cell death. Physcion may be a potential candidate in the field of anticancer drug discovery against human prostate cancer.
Corneal injury is very common clinical condition in veterinary medicine and delayed or incomplete corneal healing has the potential of vision loss due to the loss of corneal transparency. For the reconstruction of corneal epithelium, tissue graft and cell transplantation have been prosperously investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical value and short-term safety of application of cultured allogenic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the treatment of canine experimental corneal defect. Corneal defects were surgically generated in the central corneas of healthy beagle dogs and cultured canine allogenic MSCs were transplanted via subconjunctival injection. Although mean healing time, the rate of epithelial regeneration, and the degree of corneal transparency were not significantly improved after MSC transplantation, significant immune reaction or incompatibility reaction was not detected except transient local irritation. These results propose the possibility of MSC application as a new regenerative medicine in canine ocular disorders.
This paper describes a fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) system developed for the heat source apparatus in building air-conditioning system. As HVAC&R systems in building become complex and instrumented with highly automated controllers, the processes and systems get more difficult for the operator to understand and detect the mal-functions. Poorly maintained, degraded, and improperly controlled equipment wastes an estimated 15% to 30% of energy used in commercial building. When operating a complex facility, FDD system is beneficial in equipment management to provide the operator with tools which can help in decision making for recovery from a failure of the system. Automated FDD for HVAC&R system has the potential to reduce energy and maintenance costs and improves comfort and reliability. Over the last decade there has been considerable research for developing FDD system for HVAC&R equipment. However, they are being made too much of a theoretical study, so only a small of FDD methods are deployed in the field. This study deduced an actual defect source for the heat source apparatus and suggested a low price FDD method which is ready to be deployed in the field.

There have been a number of works on manufacturing ultrafine grained steels with average ferrite grain sizes of smaller than a few micrometers to develop beneficial high strength steels. Among microstructures in low carbon steels, lath martensite is known to be useful to produce an ultrafine grained ferrite matrix and finely globular cementite particle. Thus, severe plastic deformation and subsequent annealing at lower temperature of lath martensite would become an effective way to produce ultrafine grained steels. However, most ultrafine grained steels exhibited a total elongation of a few per cent in tensile tests. Such a defect is one of the primary factors restricting the potential applications of ultrafine grained steels. Therefore, the improvement of the strength-elongation balance is required for the application of ultrafine grained structural steels. In this study, the effect of deformation temperatures on microstructure, such as ferrite grain size and the distribution of cementite particles, and mechanical property of lath martensite steels, was investigated. Specimens were fabricated through cold rolling or warm rolling and subsequent annealing.

ZnS is well-known direct band gap II-VI semiconductor, and it attracts intense interest due to its excellent properties of luminescence which enable ZnS to have promising materials for optical, photonic and electronic devices. Especially, the emission wavelength of ZnS falls in the UV absorption band of most organic compoundsand biomolecules, thus it is envisaged that ZnS based devices may find applications in increasingly important fluorescence sensing. We have developed a facile and effective one-step process for the fabrication of single-crystalline and pure-wurtzite ZnS nanostructures possessing sharp band-edge emission at room-temperature having diverse length-to-width ratios. Each of nanostructures was composed of chemically pure, structurally uniform, single-crystalline, and defect-free ZnS. These features not only suppress trap or surface states emission centered at 420 nm, but also enhance UV band-edge emission centered at 327 nm, which give as-synthesized our ZnS nanostructures possible sharp UV emission at room temperature. The reaction medium consisting of mixed solvents such as hydrazine, ethylenediamine, and water as well as proper reaction time and temperature have played an important role in the crystallinity and optical properties of ZnS nanostructures. As-synthesized our ZnS nanostructures possessing sharp UV emission guarantee high potential for both fundamental research and technological applications.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid state joining technique that has expanded rapidly since its development in 1991 and has numerous applications in a wide variety of industries. This paper introduces the basic principles of friction stir welding (FSW) and presents a survey of the latest technologies and applications in the field. The basic principles that are discussed include the terminology, tool/workpiece processes, FSW merits and process variants. In particular, the process variants including the rotation speed and traveling speed are discussed, which include the defect-free zone in an oxygen free copper and Al alloy, respectively. Multiple aspects of the FSW machine are developed, including a horizontal 2D FSW machine and a hybrid complex FSW machine. The latest applications are introduced, with an emphasis on the recent advances in the aerospace, automotive, and IT display industries. Finally, the direction for future research and potential applications are examined.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive technique for microscopic investigation of tissue. We thought that the OCT method could be a potential tool for monitoring the healing process of a tendon. In this study we used two rat models, denervated and non-denervated groups, to observe a variety of healing phases of Achilles tendon (AT) injury. We made samples of AT injury lesions, to take OCT images and to make histopathological samples of serial sectional tissue. In an OCT image the denervated rat showed no specific finding, but the non-denervated rat showed a large defect lesion that was scaffolding tissue. OCT findings combined with pathologic findings showed advantages in visualization of tendon microstructure over other imaging modalities such as MRI and US, and OCT is beneficial to making a treatment plan, especially the timing and intensity of rehabilitation. Therefore a multimodal platform using OCT for evaluation of tendon injury may be potentially useful for many applications.
Microsurgical vascularized bone transfer has the disadvantages of limitation of available donor sites, loss of donor function, and the possibility of donor site defects or deformity. To overcome these shortage of current microsurgical tissue transfer, the method of creating the neovascularized free flap has been introduced. Potentially, this technique must be an innovation in providing the free vascularized bone grafts that are not limited by natural vascular anatomy. But, as could be imagined technique resulted in unavoidable donor bone defect and additional operation for harvesting the autologous bone. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of demineralized allogeneic bone as a possible substitute for autologous bone in fabricating the neo-osseous flap. By histologic, microangiographic and radioisotope method, the viability and vascularity of neo-osseous flap, which has been fabricated using allogeneic bone or autologous bone, was assessed in rat model. After 6 weeks, demineralized allogeneic bone showed consistent bone formation and neovascularization. The clinical and microscopic findings of demineralized allogeneic bone group were inferior to those of autogenous bone with regard to bone regeneration. The amount of bone blood floow per dry weight of demineralized allogeneic bone group was significantly higher than that of autogenous bone, even higher that of control intact iliac bone. In conclusion, findings supported that allogeneic bone could be the potential substitute for autologous bone source in creating a prefabricated neo-osseous flap.
