When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material efficiently. In this paper a detection of the welding defect of thin SUS 304 plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (20kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded thin SUS 304 plates with a short pulse of sound for 280ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by a thermal infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the defect tip and heated up highly, are observed. From the sequence of the thermosonic images, the location of defective or inhomogeneous regions in the welded thin SUS 304 plates can be detected easily.

A method of measuring the length of defects on the wall and restructuring the defect image is proposed based on the estimation algorithm of a camera orientation, which uses the declination angle of a laser slit beam. The estimation algorithm of the horizontally inclined angle of CCD camera adopts a 3-dimensional coordinate transformation of the image plane where both the laser beam and the original image of the defects exist. The estimation equation is obtained by using the information of the beam projected on the wall and the parameters of this equation are experimentally obtained. With this algorithm, the original image of the defect can be reconstructed as an image normal to the wall. From the result of a series of experiments, the measuring accuracy of the defect is measured within 0.5% error bound of real defect size under 30 degree of the horizontally inclined angle. The proposed algorithm provides the method of reconstructing the image taken at any arbitrary horizontally inclined angle as the image normal as the wall and thus, it enables the accurate measurement of the defect lengths by using a single camera and a laser slit beam.
In this paper asymptotic error expansions for mixed finite element approximations to a class of second order elliptic optimal control problems are derived under rectangular meshes, and the Richardson extrapolation of two different schemes and interpolation defect correction can be applied to increase the accuracy of the approximations. As a by-product, we illustrate that all the approximations of higher accuracy can be used to form a class of a posteriori error estimators of the mixed finite element method for optimal control problems.
This paper suggests the new technology to control metal flow in orther to change of the cold forging from conventional deep drawing forming. This technology can be summarized the complex forming, which consists of bulk forming and sheet forming, and multi-action forging, which be performed double action press. The proposed technology is applied to hub clutch model which is part of auto-transmission for automobile. The purpose of this study is to investigate the material flow behavior of hub clutch through control the relative velocity ratio and the stroke of mandrel and punch using the flow forming technique. First of all, the finite element simulations are applied to analyse optimal process conditions to prevent flow defect(necking defect etc.) from non-uniform metal flow, then the results are compared with the plasticine model material experiments. The punch load for real material is predict from similarity law. Finally, the model material experiment results are in good agreement with the FE simulation ones.
The groove rolling is a process that transforms the bloom or billet into a shape with circular section through a series of rolling. Inhibition of surface defect generation in groove rolling is a matter of great importance and therefore many research groups proposed a lot of models to find the location of surface defect initiation. In this study, we propose a model for maximum shear stress ratio over equivalent strain to catch the location of surface defect onset. This model is coupled with element removing method and applied to box groove rolling of POSCO No.3 Rod Mill. Results show that proposed model in this study can find the location of surface defect initiation during groove rolling when finite element analysis results is compared with experiments. The proposed criterion has been applied successfully to design roll grooves which inhibit the generation of surface defect.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the possible paracrine effect of bone morphogeneticprotein-2 (BMP-2) at the experimental site on the adjacent control site for validating a rabbit calvarial defect model as a means of verifying the effect of BMP-2. Methods: Sixteen rabbits were divided into two groups (n=8 in each) according to whether or not BMP-2 would be used. Two circular defects (8 mm in diameter) were created side by side, 2 mm apart, in the calvarium of all of the rabbits. In each animal, one of the defects was grafted with either BMP-2-loaded carrier or carrier material alone. The control defects adjacent to these grafted defects, designated CB (the nongrafted defect adjacent BMP-2-loaded carrier-grafted defect) and CC (the nongrafted defect adjacent to carrier only-grafted defect), respectively, were the focus of this study, and were filled only with a blood clot in all of the animals. Histologic observation and histomorphometric analysis were performed at 2 and 8 weeks (n=4 animals per point in time) after surgery. Results: There was no noteworthy difference in the healing pattern, and no statistically significant differences in histomorphometric parameters such as the defect closure, new bone area, or total augmented area between the CC and CB groups. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that rabbit calvarial defects separated by a distance of 2 mm are suitable for evaluating the effects of BMP-2 and the control defect can be regarded not to be affected by BMP-2 applied defect.

The inspection machine in SMT (Surface Mount Technology) line detects the assembly defects such as missing, misalignment, loosing, or tombstone. We propose a new method to classify the defect types of chip components by processing the image of PCB. Two original images are obtained from horizontal lighting and vertical lighting. The image of the component is divided into two soldering regions and one packaging region. The features are extracted by appling the PCA (Principle Component Analysis) to each region. The MLP (Multilayer Perceptron) and SVM (Support Vector Machine) are then used to classify the defect types by learning. The experimental results are presented to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

This paper presents an overall image processing approach of defect inspection of patterned TFT-LCD panels for the real manufacturing process. A prototype of AOI(Automatic Optical Inspection) system which is composed of air floating stage and multi line scan cameras is developed. Adjacent pattern comparison algorithm is enhanced and used for pattern elimination to extract defects in the patterned image of TFT-LCD panels. New region merging algorithm which is based on border expansion is proposed to identify defects from the pattern eliminated defect image. Experimental results show that a developed AOI system has acceptable performance and the proposed algorithm reduces environmental effects and processing time effectively for applying to the real manufacturing process.

AVI (Automatic Vision Inspection) systems automatically detect defect features and measure their sizes via camera vision. It is important to predict the performance of an AVI to meet customer's specification in advance. Also the prediction can indicate the level of current performance of an AVI system. In this paper, we propose a statistical method for prediction of false alarm rate regarding inconsistency of defect size measurement process. For this purpose, only simple experiments are needed to measure the defect sizes for certain number of times. The statistical features from the experiment are utilized in the prediction process. Therefore, the proposed method is swift and easy to implement and use. The experiment shows a close prediction compared to manual inspection results.

We have investigated pattern scaling down of silicon stamps through the oxidation technique, During oxidizing the silicon stamps, silicon dioxide that has 300 nm and 500 nm thickness was grown, and critical deformations were not observed in the patterns. There was positive effect to reduce size of patterns because vertical and horizontal patterns have different orientation. We achieved pattern reduction rate of $26\%$. In addition, the formation of polymer patterns had been investigated with varied temperature and pressure conditions to improve the filling characteristics of polymers during nanoimprint lithography when pattern sizes were few micrometers. In these varied conditions, polymers had been affected by free space compensation and elastic stress relaxation for filling the cavities. Based on the results, defect control which is an important issue in the nanoimprint lithography were facilitated.
