  • A UVC photo-Fenton advanced oxidation process (AOP) was studied to develop a process for the decomposition of oxalic acid waste generated in the chemical decontamination of nuclear power plants. The oxalate decomposition behavior was investigated by using a UVC photo-Fenton reactor system with a recirculation tank. The effects of the three operational variables-UVC irradiation, H2O2 and Fenton reagent-on the oxalate decomposition behavior were experimentally studied, and the behavior of the decomposition product, CO2, was observed. UVC irradiation of oxalate resulted in vigorous CO2 bubbling, and the irradiation dose was thought to be a rate-determining variable. Based on the above results, the oxalate decomposition kinetics were investigated from the viewpoint of radical formation, propagation, and termination reactions. The proposed UVC irradiation density model, expressed by the first-order reaction of oxalate with the same amount of H2O2 consumption, satisfactorily predicted the oxalate decomposition behavior, irrespective of the circulate rate in the reactor system within the experimental range.

  • One year study with litter bags(mesh size - 0.4mm, 0.8mm, 1.7mm and 5.0mm) was carried out to investigate the soil invertebrate community in the process of leaf decomposition in Namsan and Kwangreung deciduous forests, which were considered to be under different degrees of environmental selective pressure. Soil animals collected from litter bags were classified into the class of order or higher taxa. Acari and Collembola were major groups: Acari and Collembola were about 60% and 30% of total soil animals in their numbers, respectively. Among minor groups, Dipteria, Araneae, Diplopoda, Coleoptera and Chilopoda were comparatively dominant. In Namsan forest which was considered to be under higher environmental selective pressure than Kwangreung, the densities of Acari and Collembola were somewhat higher than in Kwangreung, although there was no statistically significant difference between two sites. The densities of Chilopoda, Enchytraeidae and Nematoda were much higher in Namsan than in Kwangreung but Diplopoda and Symphyla were much more in Kwangreung. It was expected that those groups could be used as bioindicators. The densities of Acari and Collembola were very low until March and then showed the peak in May. But they decreased slowly until November. There was no significant difference among the mesh sized of litter bags in the densities of Acari and Collembola but other groups of soil invertebrates seemed to be prevented from immigrating into the litter bag of mesh size 0.4mm. Decomposition rate of litter in the litter bag was low in early stage of decomposition. The % residual mass over initial mass at 8 months after litter bag introduction in the field was over 80%. Thereafter, % residual mass decreased more fast and was about 60% at 1 year after bag introduction. There was little evidence for the effects of soil invertebrates upon the litter decomposition in the period of this study. And there was no significant difference between Namsan and Kwangreung or among mesh sizes of litter bags in the decomposition rate.

  • This paper proposes an effective decomposition method of trichloroethylene using pellet packed-bed non-thermal plasma reactor and catalyst. For that, two types of reactors filled with manganese dioxide and alumina pellets are designed. When $MnO_2$ packed reactor is used, TCE decomposition rate is high due to the generation of oxygen atom radicals at the surface of catalyst during ozone decomposition. In addition, When $Al_2O_3$ packed reactor is used, TCE is oxidized into DCAC and it did not decomposed into small molecules such as COx and $Cl_2$. However, the plasma processed gas using $Al_2O_3$ packed reactor is passed through the $MnO_2$ catalyst reactor, which is placed at the downstream of plasma reactor, the decomposition rate increased as well due to oxygen atom radicals through ozone decomposition. Therefore, the adequate use of $MnO_2$ catalyst in the plasma process is very promising way to increase the decomposition efficiency.

  • $TiO_2$ nanopowder was synthesized by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process and its photocatalytic property depending on microstructure was considered in terns of decomposition rate of organic compound. In order to control microstructure of $TiO_2$ nanopowder such as particle size and degree of agglomeration, precursor flow rate representing number concentration was changed as a process variable. In TEM observation, spherical $TiO_2$ nanoparticles with average size of 20 nm showed gradual increases in particle size and degree of agglomeration with increase of precursor flow rate. Also decomposition rate of organic compound increased with decreasing precursor flow rate. Thus, it was concluded that photocatalytic property was enhanced by targe surface area of disperse $TiO_2$ nanoparticles synthesized at lower precursor flow rate condition in CVC process.

  • We show an exponential inequality for negatively associated and strictly stationary random variables replacing an uniform boundedness assumption by the existence of Laplace transforms. To obtain this result we use a truncation technique together with a block decomposition of the sums. We also identify a convergence rate for the strong law of large number.

  • This paper presents pedestrian recognition to improve performance for vehicle safety system or surveillance system. Pedestrian detection method using HOG (Histograms of Oriented Gradients) has showed 90% recognition rate. But if someone takes a picture in the rain, the image may be distorted by rain streaks and recognition rate goes down by 62%. To solve this problem, we applied image decomposition method using MCA (Morphological Component Analysis). In this case, rain removal method improves recognition rate from 62% to 70%. However, it is difficult to apply conventional image decomposition method using MCA on vehicle safety system or surveillance system as conventional method is too slow for real-time system. To alleviate this issue, we propose a rain removal method by using low-pass filter and DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform). The DCT helps separate the image into rain components. The image is removed rain components by Butterworth filtering. Experimental results show that our method achieved 90% of recognition rate. In addition, the proposed method had accelerated processing time to 17.8ms which is acceptable for real-time system.

  • The production and decomposition of litters and nutrient cycling of forests were studied at the pine forests such as Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida, Pinus thunbergii, Abies holophylla and Larix kaempfer. The annual litter production of the P. densiflora forest was the most on Mt. Mudeung which was 620.75g/$m^2$ and the least on Mt. Halla which was 155.00g/$m^2$. The decay rate of litters was the highest at the P. densiflora forest on Mt. Mudeung which was k=0.256 and the lowest at the P. densiflora forest on Mt. Halla and A. holophylla on Mt. Jiri which were k=0.099. The half time of decomposition of litters was shortest at the P. densiflora forest on Mt. Mudeung and the longest at the P. densiflora on Mt. Halla and A. holophylla forests on Mt. Jiri. The average decay rate of the L. kaempferi forests which was k=0.204 was the highest and that of the A. holophylla forests which was k=0.122 was the lowest. The decay rate tended to decrease against increasing the altitude. The annual production of litterr, the contents of mineral nutrients and the amounts of mineral nutrients inputted into the forest soil tended to increase in proportion to the decay rate, k.

  • This study focuses on SIR model for SARS-CoV-2. The SIR model classifies a population into three compartments: susceptible S(t), infected I(t), and recovered R(t) individuals. The SARS-CoV-2 model considers various factors, such as immigration, birth rate, death rate, contact rate, recovery rate, and interactions between infected and healthy individuals to explore their impact on population dynamics during the pandemic. To analyze this model, we employed two powerful semi-analytical methods: the Laplace Adomian decomposition method (LADM) and the differential transform method (DTM). Both techniques demonstrated their efficacy by providing highly accurate approximate solutions with minimal iterations. Furthermore, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the system behavior, we conducted a comparison with the numerical simulations. This comparative analysis enabled us to validate the results and to gain valuable understanding of the responses of SARS-CoV-2 model across different scenarios.

  • We propose a wavelet decomposition feature extraction method for the hand-written character recognition. Comparing the recognition rates of which methods with original image features and with selected features by the wavelet decomposition we study the characteristics of the proposed method. LDA(Linear Discriminant Analysis) QDA(Quadratic Discriminant Analysis) RDA(Regularized Discriminant Analysis) and NN(Neural network) are used for the calculation of recognition rates. 6000 hand-written numerals from CENPARMI at Concordia University are used for the experiment. We found that the set of significantly selected wavelet decomposed features generates higher recognition rate than the original image features.
