Firm Heterogeneity and Location Choice: The Case of South Korean Manufacturing Multinationals

  • Previous studies of location choice have focused on country-level data more than firm-level data and been more concerned with host countries' distinctive features than with firm heterogeneity. Therefore, they do not answer the question of who will go where in terms of location choice. To analyze the role of firm heterogeneity in determining location choice, we develop a theoretical model and analyze data on 3,644 Korean manufacturing multinationals operating in 87 countries between 1982 and 2006. The results of our conditional logit analysis indicate that not only host country characteristics but also firm heterogeneous factors such as productivity, labor intensity, and size have considerable influence on the decision of where to locate FDI.

CRM using short range location based technology

  • In this paper, we propose the CRM service model for analyzing and managing location based data collected by Wi-Fi and BLE. As mobile devices became personalized, enterprises became interested in individual location, and location based mobile marketing started to stand on spotlight. Location based proximity marketing is developing along with contactless data transmission technology, and payment system that uses NFC, Beacon that utilizes BLE, as well as advertisement via Wi-Fi are being serviced. We suggest the model that mobile devices can be detected and identified by MAC address with the need of being connected to Wi-FI or Bluetooth interface. MAC addresses are not associated with any specific user account or mobile phone number. The idea is to be able to measure the amount of people which are present in a certain point at a specific time, allowing the study of the evolution of data analysis and offers effective information for decision-makings.

Efficient Computation of a Skyline under Location Restrictions (위치 제약 조건을 고려한 효율적인 스카이라인 계산)

  • The skyline of a multi-dimensional data set is a subset that consists of the data that are not dominated by other members of the set. Skyline computation can be very useful for decision making for multi-dimensional data set. However, in case that the skyline is very large, it may not be much useful for decision making. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for computing a part of the skyline considering location restrictions that the user provides, such as origin movement, degree ranges and/or distances from the origin. The algorithm eliminates noncandidate data rapidly, and returns in order the skyline points that satisfy the user's requests. We show that the algorithm is efficient by experiments.

Study on the Prediction Model for Employment of University Graduates Using Machine Learning Classification (머신러닝 기법을 활용한 대졸 구직자 취업 예측모델에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose Youth unemployment is a social problem that continues to emerge in Korea. In this study, we create a model that predicts the employment of college graduates using decision tree, random forest and artificial neural network among machine learning techniques and compare the performance between each model through prediction results. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the data processing was performed, including the acquisition of the college graduates' vocational path survey data first, then the selection of independent variables and setting up dependent variables. We use R to create decision tree, random forest, and artificial neural network models and predicted whether college graduates were employed through each model. And at the end, the performance of each model was compared and evaluated. Findings The results showed that the random forest model had the highest performance, and the artificial neural network model had a narrow difference in performance than the decision tree model. In the decision-making tree model, key nodes were selected as to whether they receive economic support from their families, major affiliates, the route of obtaining information for jobs at universities, the importance of working income when choosing jobs and the location of graduation universities. Identifying the importance of variables in the random forest model, whether they receive economic support from their families as important variables, majors, the route to obtaining job information, the degree of irritating feelings for a month, and the location of the graduating university were selected.

Bus Information System Providing Passenger Number Information (승차인원정보를 제공하는 버스정보시스템)

  • The objective of this paper is to propose the bus information system that provides bus passenger number. Recently, we use a bus conveniently through introduction of bus information system offering location-based information. However, we need additional information for decision making in order to use a bus comfortably. To do this, first, we analyzed the needs of providing passenger number; second, we adopted GPS and RFID type's transportation card to get location and passenger number. Finally, we implemented the system displaying that information by three types, and tested it. Our proposed system has advantages to use a bus comfortably and to manage a bus efficiently by providing bus passenger number which is the important element for decision making as well as location based information provided by existing bus information systems.

A Study on the Locational Decision Factors of Discount Stores : The Case of Cheonan (종합슈퍼마켓의 입지 결정 요인에 관한 연구 : 천안상권을 중심으로)

  • In this paper, we investigate several factors that affect the locational decision of discount stores by using previous studies on the marketing area and the location of commercial facilities. We selected 21 primary variables that are expected to influence the decision of store location and, by factor analysis, grouped them into five underlying factors. Among these, the demographic factor, which shows the potential purchasing power level, had the greatest impact on the locational decision for the store. However, we found individual stores positioned according to unique locational characteristics in addition to the demographic factor. It means that we have to additionally consider if the vicinity of the market is based on any physical properties. Many previous studies proposed four decision factors for store location: the economic factor, the demographic factor, the land utilization factor, and traffic factor. However, the fivefold factors-our distinctive contribution-are more concrete and persuasive according to Korean reality. We show that location preference is based on the following criteria: (1) the area is densely populated, (2) houses stand close together, (3) residents have a high income level, (4) road traffic is developed and easy to access, and (5) public transportation is well developed. The demographic factor has the greatest impact on the location of a discount store. The number of households has a greater relevance to the demographic factor than does the individual consumer. Second, discount stores relatively prefer places where houses are located close together because such places offer easy access to the market. Third, a place whose residents have a high income level will be preferred, with its large cars and excellent traffic conditions. Fourth, a location would be highly rated if the roads around commercial facilities are well developed and their accessibility is good. Finally, discount stores must be located close to bus stops because female consumers, including housewives-the most important customers-evaluate stores based on distance. In this research, the variable of consumer attitude and preference was excluded, and the location factors of discount stores were analyzed according to a microscopic view through physical spatial data. In the future, the opening of new discount stores based on the five factors indicated above will require a comparatively shorter time from the first project feasibility analysis. In addition, the result of our study can be applied to the field of public policy for constructing and attracting large-scale distribution facilities.

Analytic Hierarchy Process Modelling of Location Competitiveness for a Regional Logistics Distribution Center Serving Northeast Asia

  • Purpose - As the global product network expands through both internationalization and diversification of the multimodal transportation system, corporate strategies have shifted to emphasize the importance of a high value-added international logistics system. To guide policies and strategies to attract relevant industries, this study aims to analyze the location competitiveness of regional logistics distribution center to serve Northeast Asia. Design/methodology - Multi-criteria techniques are considered to offer a promising framework for evaluating decision-making factors. This paper employed an analytic hierarchy process to analyze the hierarchal structure of determinants for selecting the location of a regional logistics distribution center. Adopting both qualitative and quantitative evaluations, this study suggest political implications for a regional logistics distribution center development, such as the direction of political support, service differentiation and infrastructure development. Findings - This study developed a location competitiveness evaluation model, based on the case study of the major port-cities in Northeast Asia. Evaluation model incorporates five factors underpinning 17 components extracted using factor analysis. The results revealed that the logistics factor is the most significant factor for evaluating the competitiveness of a regional logistics distribution center. The remaining factors were market, costs, and services environment. Comparing qualitative and quantitative evaluations, results provide useful insights for a regional logistics distribution center development in Northeast Asia. Originality/value - This study revealed differences between qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The finding implies that prior works on evaluation models of competitiveness has not successfully measured the gap between quantitative data and expert' evaluations. To overcome this limitation, this paper considered both actual data such as actual distance, cost, the number of companies located, and expert opinions.

  • Even at this point in the era of digital transformation, we are still facing many problems in the safety sector that cannot prevent the occurrence or spread of human casualties. When you are in an unexpected emergency, it is often difficult to respond only with human physical ability. Human casualties continue to occur at construction sites, manufacturing plants, and multi-use facilities used by many people in everyday life. If you encounter a situation where normal judgment is impossible in the event of an emergency at a life site where there are still many safety blind spots, it is difficult to cope with the existing manual guidance method. New variable guidance technology, which combines artificial intelligence and digital twin, can make it possible to prevent casualties by processing large amounts of data needed to derive appropriate countermeasures in real time beyond identifying what safety accidents occurred in unexpected crisis situations. When a simple control method that divides and monitors several CCTVs is digitally converted and combined with artificial intelligence and 3D digital twin control technology, intelligence augmentation (IA) effect can be achieved that strengthens the safety decision-making ability required in real time. With the enforcement of the Serious Disaster Enterprise Punishment Act, the importance of distributing a smart location guidance system that urgently solves the decision-making delay that occurs in safety accidents at various industrial sites and strengthens the real-time decision-making ability of field workers and managers is highlighted. The smart location guidance system that combines artificial intelligence and digital twin consists of AIoT HW equipment, wireless communication NW equipment, and intelligent SW platform. The intelligent SW platform consists of Builder that supports digital twin modeling, Watch that meets real-time control based on synchronization between real objects and digital twin models, and Simulator that supports the development and verification of various safety management scenarios using intelligent agents. The smart location guidance system provides on-site monitoring using IoT equipment, CCTV-linked intelligent image analysis, intelligent operating procedures that support workflow modeling to immediately reflect the needs of the site, situational location guidance, and digital twin virtual fencing access control technology. This paper examines the limitations of traditional fixed passive guidance methods, analyzes global technology development trends to overcome them, identifies the digital transformation properties required to switch to intelligent variable smart location guidance methods, explains the characteristics and components of AI-based public facility smart fire safety integrated system (ISFS).

A Precise Location Tracking System with Smart Context-Awareness Based-on Doppler Radar Sensors (스마트한 상황인지를 적용한 도플러 레이더 센서 기반의 정밀 위치추정 시스템)

  • Today, detecting the location of moving object has been traced as various methods in our world. In this paper, we preset the system to improve the estimation accuracy utilizing detail localization using radar sensor based on WSN and situational awareness for a calibration (context aware) database, Rail concept. A variety of existing location tracking method has a problem with receiving of data and accuracy as tracking methodology, and since these located data are the only data to be collected for location tracing, the context aware or monitering as the surrounding environment is limited. So, in this paper, we enhanced the distance aware accuracy using radar sensor utilizing the Doppler effect among the distance measuring method, estimated the location using the Triangulation algorithm. Also, since we composed the environment data(temperature, illuminancem, humidity, noise) to entry of the database, it can be utilized in location-based service according to the later action information inference and positive context decision. In order to verify the validity of the suggested method, we give a few random situation and built test bed of designed node, and over the various test we proved the utilizing the context information through route tracking of moving and data processing.

A Study on the Practice of Social Marketing in Domestic Fashion Business (국내(國內) 패션기업(企業)의 사회지향적(社會指向的) 마케팅 실천(實踐)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the practice d social marketing of fashion business in Korea. A questionnaire was designed by the researcher and consisted of items of 30 items of social marketing practice in fashion business. Responsers are administrators and merchandisers who work in fashion business. Data were analyged using SPSS by frequency, mean, standard deviation, $x^2$-test, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. The results of this study were as follows : 1. In decision-making method of social marketing, degrees of practice were shown comparatively high. And, three practice factors (consumerism, humanism, and environmentalism) showed indifference in six business characteristics (store type, staff number, annual budget, annual education method, education frequency, and the location). 2. In feedforward method of social marketing, degrees of practice were shown comparatively high. And, two practice factors (business strategy, and product strategy) showed indifference in seven business characteristics (date of establishment, store type, staff number, annual budget, education method, annual education frequency, and the location). 3. In administrative method of social marketing, degrees d practice were shown comparatively high. And, four practice factors (product development, price decision, distribution management, and advertisement and promotion) showed indifference in eight business characteristics (date d establishment, store type, staff number, annual budget, education method, annual education frequency, the location, and distribution structure). 4. In total system method of social marketing, degrees of practice were shown comparatively high. And, two practice factors (marketing planning, and self-audits system) showed indifference in six business characteristics (business size, store type, annual budget, education method, annual education frequency, and distribution structure). The present findings provide that social marketing of fashion business in korea has been practiced comparatively high.
