The problem of automated stacking cranes (ASC) dispatching in container terminals is addressed in this paper. We propose a heuristic-based ASC dispatching approach which adopts multi-criteria decision strategy. By aggregating different criteria the proposed strategy can consider multiple aspects of the dispatching situation and make robust decision in various situations. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) is adopted to tune the weights associated to each criteria to minimize both the quay crane delay and external truck delay. The proposed approach is validated by comparison with different dispatching heuristics and simulation results obtained confirms its effectiveness.
The decision directed (DD) approach is widely used to determine a priori SNR from noisy speech signals. In conventional speech enhancement systems with a DD approach, a priori SNR is estimated by using only the magnitude components and consequently follows a posteriori SNR with one frame delay. We propose a phase-dependent two-step a priori SNR estimator based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) in the log-mel spectral domain so that we can consider both magnitude and phase information, and it can overcome the performance degradation caused by one frame delay. From the experimental results, the proposed estimator is shown to improve the output SNR of enhanced speech signals by 2.3 dB compared to the conventional DD approach-based system.
Recently, multi-access edge computing (MEC) has emerged as a promising technology to alleviate the computing burden of vehicular terminals and efficiently facilitate vehicular applications. The vehicle can improve the quality of experience of applications by offloading their tasks to MEC servers. However, channel conditions are time-varying due to channel interference among vehicles, and path loss is time-varying due to the mobility of vehicles. The task arrival of vehicles is also stochastic. Therefore, it is difficult to determine an optimal offloading with resource allocation decision in the dynamic MEC system because offloading is affected by wireless data transmission. In this paper, we study computation offloading with resource allocation in the dynamic MEC system. The objective is to minimize power consumption and maximize throughput while meeting the delay constraints of tasks. Therefore, it allocates resources for local execution and transmission power for offloading. We define the problem as a Markov decision process, and propose an offloading method using deep reinforcement learning named deep deterministic policy gradient. Simulation shows that, compared with existing methods, the proposed method outperforms in terms of throughput and satisfaction of delay constraints.
Procrastination is an irrational choice to delay high-priority work in order to avoid its unpleasantness, despite the fact that the negativity will not cease if the work still remains undone. We hypothesized that (1) people underestimate the future negativity (i.e., delay neutralization) and (2) in order to complete work in a timely manner, one should project oneself into the future so as to recognize that the negativity associated with an activity does not diminish over time. Especially, negative future thinking that is unrelated to the consequence was hypothesized to reduce delay neutralization of negativity. In the present study, undergraduate students made a series of choices between delayed-but-longer and immediate-but-shorter assignment by employing an inter-temporal choice paradigm. We tracked how positive and negative episodic future thinking influenced the degree to which negativity is neutralized over time (Experiment 1). Following this, we confined the experimental condition to negative thinking about the future (Experiment 2). Participants neutralized negativity involved in assignment as a function of time, suggesting that procrastination arises from the delay neutralization of the negativity. Critically, such neutralization was significantly reduced when participants imagined a negative future event, but this did not occur when they imagined a positive future event (Experiment 1), or when participants did not think about the future (Experiment 1, 2). Our findings suggest that, prior to making a decision between work and indulgence, imagining negative future events can be an effective way to reduce the neutralization of delayed negativity and, in turn, procrastination.

Data compression at the transport layer could both reduce transmitted bytes over network links and increase the transmitted application data (TCP PDU) in one RTT at the same network conditions. Therefore, it is able to improve transmission efficiency on Internet, especially on the networks with limited bandwidth or long delay links. In this paper, we propose an on-the-fly TCP data compression scheme, i.e., the TCPComp, to enhance TCP performance. This scheme is primarily composed of the compression decision mechanism and the compression ratio estimation algorithm. When the application data arrives at the transport layer, the compression decision mechanism is applied to determine which data block could be compressed. The compression ratio estimation algorithm is employed to predict compression ratios of upcoming application data for determining the proper size of the next data block so as to maximize compression efficiency. Furthermore, the assessment criteria for TCP data compression scheme are systematically developed. Experimental results show that the scheme can effectively reduce transmitted TCP segments and bytes, leading to greater transmission efficiency compared with the standard TCP and other TCP compression schemes.

Appropriate management of the finish works in construction project is one of most important activities that must be conducted considering the total duration of the project. Masonry work is a fundamental process that is performed in the preliminary steps of finish works. However, it has been investigated that the analysis of delay factors affecting masonry work has been neglected in the domestic construction site. Therefore, this study deducts delay factors affecting masonry work by literature review and survey on site engineers and labors. This study has been conducted as a preliminary step of developing a construction project interference management system which is expected to suggest objective information for the decision making in construction sites.
Recently, the traffic volume of mobile communications increases rapidly and the small-cell is one of the solutions using two offload schemes, i.e., local IP access (LIPA) and selected IP traffic offload (SIPTO), to reduce the end-to-end delay and amount of mobile data traffic in the core network (CN). However, 3GPP describes the concept of LIPA and SIPTO and there is no decision algorithm to decide the path from source nodes (SNs) to destination nodes (DNs). Therefore, this paper proposes a dynamic mobile data traffic offload scheme using small-cells to decide the path based on the SN and DN, i.e., macro user equipment, small-cell user equipment (SUE), and multimedia server, and type of the mobile data traffic for the real-time and non-real-time. Through analytical models, it is shown that the proposed offload scheme outperforms the conventional small-cell network in terms of the delay of end-to-end mobile data communications and probability of the mobile data traffic in the CN for the heterogeneous networks.
IEEE 802.15.4 network and WiFi network are installed to overlap each other and configured to use adjacent frequency bands in which case the communication service required by applications can not be guaranteed because of randomly increased frame transmission delay and frequent frame transmission failures at nodes in IEEE 802.15.4 network. In this paper, transmission delay model at IEEE 802.15.4 nodes and an experimental system to evaluate the interference from WiFi traffic are described, then elements for the evaluation of interference are measured with the analysis of their characteristics. A sequential method of using medium access layer and physical layer elements of IEEE 802.15.4 protocols is proposed to decide interference from WiFi network. With the proposed method, if an evaluation function having frame transmission failures and transmission delay as variables returns a value greater than a threshold, intensive measurements of wireless channel power are carried out subsequently and the final decision of interference is made by the calculated average channel power. Experimental results of the method show that the decision time is reduced with increased frequency of decision in comparison to an other similar method.

Recently, many researchers have studied to solve the energy consumption of network equipments since the interest of Green IT has been increased. In this paper, we apply Low Power Idle (LPI) to OBS network to reduce energy consumption of network devices. Many previous researches have focused on maximizing the sleep time of network equipments to increase the energy saving efficiency of LPI. But transition overhead caused by LPI might not only depreciate the performance of energy saving but also increase packet delay. In this paper, Transition Decision (TD) algorithm is proposed to improve energy saving efficiency by reducing the number of unnecessary transition and guarantee the required QoS such as packet delay. To evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm, we model OBS edge router with LPI by OPNET and analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm in views of energy saving, transition count and average packet delay.
Prenatal nicotine exposure over an entire pregnancy has been associated with an increased prevalence of hyperactivity, anxiety-like behavior and depression-like behavior in mature rats. However, the effects of maternal nicotine exposure in late gestation and lactation on the psychology and behavior of adolescent rat offspring are unclear. Thus, we investigated the effect of nicotine exposure during late gestation and lactation on anxiety-like and impulsive decision-making behavior in adolescent offspring of rat. Female rats were orally exposed to nicotine which is within range of plasma level of human chronic smokers during the period of third last period of gestation and lactation. When the offspring were weaned, we observed alterations in the anxiety-like behavior and decision-making ability of adolescent rat offspring using light/dark box test and T-maze delay-based cost-benefit decision-making task. The maternal consumption of nicotine reduced both the time spent in the light compartment and the number of transitions compared to nicotine-free rats. Moreover, such nicotine exposed adolescent offspring rats showed impulsive decision making which chose the instant reward in a decision-making situation. We found that nicotine exposure during late gestation and lactation induces an increase in anxiety-like and impulsive decision-making behavior at this developmental stage. These findings suggest that maternal nicotine-exposed offspring are at an increased risk of developing anxious and impulsive behavior.
