  • Ten species of Galatheoidea (squat lobsters), belonging to two families, were collected in the Korean exclusive economic zone: Galathea balssi Miyake and Baba, 1964, Galathea orientalis Stimpson, 1858, Galathea pubescens Stimpson, 1858, and Galathea rubromaculata Miyake and Baba, 1967 belonging to Galatheidae; Bathymunida brevirostris Yokoya, 1933, Cervimunida princeps Benedict, 1902, Munida caesura Macpherson and Baba, 1993, Munida japonica Stimpson, 1858, Munida pherusa Macpherson and Baba, 1993, and Paramunida scabra (Henderson, 1885) belonging to Munididae. The present study comprises the morphological description of these ten species, including drawings and color photographs, a brief review of their regional records, and a key for their identification. Although all species are common in Japanese waters, G. balssi, G. rubromaculata, B. brevirostris, C. princeps, M. caesura, and M. pherusa are new to Korean marine fauna.

  • Shrimp of the family Stenopodidae occurr in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate parts of the world. Thirty-seven species of four genera (Juxtastenopus, Odontozona, Richardina, and Stenopus) of the family Stenopodidae have been reported in the world. Among them, only Stenopus hispidus of the family Stenopodidae has been recorded from Korean waters. The stenopodid shrimp, Odontozona arbur is reported for the first time from Korea. During a taxonomic survey of the deacapod crustaceans in Korean waters, O. arbur was collected by scuba diving in approximately 14 m depth from the Munseom Islet, in Jejudo Island on 28 Jun 2018. Odontozona arbur is the second species of the family Stenopodidae in Korea. It is easily distinguished from other species of this family in Korea by the entire dorsal surface of the abdominal somites. The morphology of this species is described and illustrated herein.

  • The first zoea of Petrolisthes trilobatus Osawa, 1996, from a female collected in Japan is described and illustrated. Its morphological characteristics are compared with those of other known species of the genus Petrolisthes. The first zoea of P. trilobatus appears very similar to those of P. lamarckii, P. asiaticus and P. hastatus. However, it could be distinguished from the others in having a spine on the lower posterior margin of the carapace, three pairs of setae on the postero-dorsal surface of the telson and minute spinules on the dorsal margins of the abdominal somites 2-5. Based on zoeal morphology, it is suggested that the zoeas of Petrolisthes could be divided into two groups: the first group (P. coccineus, P. moluccensis, P. lamarckii, P. trilobatus, P. asiaticus, P. hastatus, P. pubescens, P. tomentosus, and P. carinipes) and the second one (P. ohshimai, P. armatus, P. boscii, P. tridentatus, P. tonsorius, and P. japonicus).

  • Early zoeal stages of two snapping shrimps Alpheus digitalis De Haan, 1850 and Alpheus japonicus Miers, 1879 are described and illustrated in detail for the first time based on the laboratory-reared materials. The first zoeas of Alpheus are more related to those of Vexillipar than to Athanas, Automate, and Synalpheus by having rostrum absent, the tip of the endopod of the antenna with a long plumose seta as well as a spine, the endopod of the maxilla with a basal and two terminal setae, the exopod of the maxilla shorter than the endopod, and the endopod of the second maxilliped with a seta on the proximal segment. A list of larval descriptions and described stages of the Alpheidae reported from Indo-West Pacific waters are included.

  • One ovigerous crab of Hemigrapsus longitarsis (Miers, 1879) was collected in Jeju Island, Korea and their larvae were reared in the laboratory. Five zoeal and one megalopal stages are described and illustrated in detail. Morphology of the zoeas slightly differs from that in the previous record. Within the genus Hemigrapsus, H. longitarsis shows similarity closer to H. sanguineus and H. penicillatus than to H. sinensis based on the zoeal morphology. The zoeas of H. longitarsis can be distinguished from those of the two other species in having a dorsal carapace spine with minute spinules which is naked in H. sanguineus and H. penicillatus. A provisional key is provided to aid the identification of the grapsid zoeas in Korea.

  • Novactaea pulchella was reared in the laboratory, from hatching to the megalopal stage at $25^{\circ}C$. The larval stage of it consists of two zoeal and one megalopal stages. The first zoea of the present study differs from that described by Terada (1990) in the setal presence of the carapace, the maxilla and the maxilliped, and the lateral process on the abdominal somite. It is reported for the first time that brachyuran zoeas belonging to a species share two types of lateral processes on the abdominal somites. They are either on the abdominal somites 2 and 3 or on abdominal somites 2 to 5. A provisional key is provided to aid the identification of the actaeine zoeas in Korea and the adjacent waters.

  • Taxonomic confusion has been presented within freshwater crayfishes of the genus Cambaroides since Starobogatov published morphological definition and revision of the group in 1995. He suggested that Cambaroides should be revised: the C. dauricus, contained three species C. dauricus, C. wladiwostokiensis, and C. koshewnikowi; the C. schrenckii with two. species C. schrenckii and C. sachalinensis. Also Straovogatov did not take into account the previous data. of crayfish distributions. In order to. clear up the confusion, the taxonomy of crayfish sampled from Mongolia, Russia, China, and North Korea was reassessed. Starovogatov's key could not lead to the correct identification. Also, detailed observations of apical robe of the male first pleopod did not support the taxonomy on the genus Cambaroides proposed by Starobogatov in 1995. However, some local variations of morphology exist in rostrum, pleuron, and telson of Asian crayfish. Future studies should be concentrated on whether there are geographical clines of morphology or if taxonomic subdivision is necessary.

  • We examined the sex ratio, and insemination rate of Parapenaeus fissuroides and Parapenaeus lanceolatus using samples collected near Cheju Island, Korea, in January 2005. Females were more numerous than males in both species, and based on the gonad color pattern, sex ratio, and insemination rate, the spawning period of these shrimps was determined to be during winter.
