Analysis of Appropriateness of Estimation Methods for Sediment Yields in Damaged Areas by Debris Flow (토석류 피해지역 토사유출량 산정 방법의 적정성 분석)

  • In this study, the amount of debris flow was calculated through the empirical equations of RUSLE, NILIM, and Marchi, which are widely used to calculate areas affected by debris flow, and debris flow measured through precise measurements and field surveys was compared. The RUSLE method over estimated by 2.13 times in the average sense compared with the measured sediment quantify and Marchi's empirical equation over estimated by 2.83 times while NILIM's empirical equation 1.26 times, which is the lowest error among the three empirical equation.

Proposal of Early-Warning Criteria for Highway Debris Flow Using Rainfall Frequency (2): Criteria Adjustment and Verification (확률 강우량을 이용한 고속도로 토석류 조기경보기준 제안 (2) : 기준의 조정 및 적용성 검토)

  • In the previous study, the rainfall data of 1 hour, 6 hours and 3 days were used as the rainfall criterion according to the grade to trigger the debris flow in the highway area, using the rainfall data of Gangwon area and the rainfall time-series data at the spot where the debris flow occurred. In this study, we propose an early warning criterion of the highway debris flow triggering through appropriate combination of three rainfall criteria selected through previous studies and adjustments of rainfall criterion in the highway debris flow triggering. In addition, simulations were conducted using the time-series rainfall data of 2010~2012, which had a large amount of precipitation for the five sites where debris flows occurred in 2013. As a result of the study, the criteria for the early warning of highway unsteadiness on the highway were prepared. In case of the grade-based adjustment, it is preferable to apply the unified rating to the grade B. Also, if the fatigue of the monitoring is not a problem, adjusting it to A or S may be a way to positively cope with the occurrence of highway debris flow.

Study of Determination in Measurement System for Safely Managing Debris-Flow (안전한 토석류 관리를 위한 계측기 선정에 관한 연구)

  • Recent studies have shown that there are various systems which can be used to monitor hazardous area in a debris flow location, but lack of methodological research on the exact location where each instrument should be installed has hindered the success of this systems. The objective of this study is to suggest the measurement system for monitoring debris-flow and propose the effective method to determine location of measurement system. Previously studied, from 1991 to 2015, were referred and the applied ratio of every instrument was investigated. The measurement information was divided into 8 categories including rainfall, debris-flow velocity, displacement, fluid pore pressure, ground vibration, image processing, impact force and peak flow depth. The result of this study revealed that the most applied instruments to be rain gauge and geophone for measuring average rainfall and ground vibration respectively. The Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) method was selected to determine installation location of instrument and the weighting factors were estimated through fine content, soil thickness, porosity, shear strength, elastic modulus, hydraulic conductivity and saturation. The soil thickness shows highest weights and the fine content relatively demonstrates lowest weights. The score of each position can be calculated through the weighting factors and the lowest score position can be judged as the weak point. The weak point denotes the easily affecting area and thus, the point is suitable for installing the measurement system. This study suggests a better method for safely managing the debris-flow through a precise location for installing measurement system.

Rheological Models for Describing Fine-laden Debris Flows: Grain-size Effect (세립토 위주의 토석류에 관한 유변학적 모델: 입자크기 효과)

  • This paper presents the applicability of rheological models for describing fine-laden debris flows and analyzes the flow characteristics as a function of grain size. Two types of soil samples were used: (1) clayey soils - Mediterranean Sea clays and (2) silty soils - iron ore tailings from Newfoundland, Canada. Clayey soil samples show a typical shear thinning behavior but silty soil samples exhibit the transition from shear thinning to the Bingham fluid as shear rate is increased. It may be due to the fact that the determination of yield stress and plastic viscosity is strongly dependent upon interstructrual interaction and strength evolution between soil particles. So grain size effect produces different flow curves. For modeling debris flows that are mainly composed of fine-grained sediments (<0.075 mm), we need the yield stress and plastic viscosity to mimic the flow patterns like shape of deposition, thickness, length of debris flow, and so on. These values correlate with the liquidity index. Thus one can estimate the debris flow mobility if one can measure the physical properties.

  • This study was carried out to determine the distribution of factors as effected by debris flow in Ulsan and Pusan metropolitan areas because mainly debris flow caused by typhoons and local heavy rainfall events is mainly attributed to damage of human being ad property. The high risk degree of debris flow was to affected by east (20%), northeast (20%) and northwest (20%) slopes with stand age class with elevation (69%) of 100-200 (33%). Also, the risk was high in high erosion collapse degree with slope degree of $20-25^{\circ}$ with over 300 mm (100%) of maximum daily rainfall events and 50-100 mm (50%) or >100 mm (50%) of maximum hourly rainfall events with <5 km of stream path and <50 ha of catchment area. Landslide debris and wood residue flow was also related to igneous rocks (73%) and bank collapse types of debrs flow (57%).

  • Heavy rainfall is in causing debris flow by recent climate change and causes much damage in the downstream. The debris flow from the mountainous area runs to the downstream, repeating sedimentation and erosion, and appears as a fluidized soil-water mixture. Continuity equation and momentum equation were applied to analyze the debris flow with strong mobility, and the sedimentation and erosion velocity with fine particle fractions were also applied. This study is to analyze the behavior of debris flow at the downstream end for the variation of the amount of sediments can occur in the upstream of the mountain. Analysis of sediment volume concentration at the downstream end of the channel due to the variance of the length of pavement of the granulated soils resulted in the higher the supply flow discharge and the longer the length of pavement, the greater the difference in the level of sediment concentration and the earlier the point of occurrence of the inflection point. The results of this study will provide good information for determining the erosion-sedimentation velocity rate which can detect erosion and sedimentation on steep slopes.

Effect of the Cylindrical Baffle Configuration Behind Rigid Barrier on Impact Load of Debris Flow (중력식 사방댐 후면에 설치된 원통형 대책구조물의 배치조건이 토석류의 충격하중에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigates the effect of cylindrical baffle arrays behind a rigid barrier on debris flow behavior and dynamic impact load. Small-scale tests were performed with various transverse blockage ratios and row numbers of baffles. High-speed cameras were installed at the flume's top and side, and load cells were installed in front of the rigid barrier. Moreover, glass beads simulated large boulders with debris flow in the flume. Test results revealed that the impact load of debris flow on the rigid barrier was significantly reduced using the cylindrical baffles behind the rigid barrier. In addition, the increased transverse blockage ratio of baffle arrays led to a greater impact load of debris flow because of flow suppression due to the baffle arrays.

  • The relationship between debris flow and topographical factors is essential for the reliable estimation of soil loss. The objective of this paper is to estimate stability index and soil loss for assessing landsliding risk caused by debris flow. SIMAP and RUSLE are used to estimate stability index and soil loss, respectively. The landsliding risk area estimated by using SIMAP is found to be different from the large land area estimated by RUSLE. It is found that the spatial distribution of soil cover significantly influences landsliding risk area. Results also indicate that stability index and soil loss, estimated by soil cover factor, improve the assessment of landsliding risk.

  • The impact of prolonged rainfall, such as during the monsoon season or intense concentrated rainfall over a short period, can lead to mountainous disasters such as landslides and debris flows. These events, such as landslides and debris flows, cause both human and material damage, prompting the implementation of various measures and research to prevent them. In the context of researching debris flow disasters, numerical models for debris flows provide a relatively simple way to analyze the risk in a study area. However, since empirical equations are applied in these models, yielding different results and variations in input variables across models, the validation of numerical models becomes essential. In this study, a numerical model for debris flows was employed to compare and analyze the mitigation effects of facilities such as check dams and water channel work, aiming to reduce the damage caused by debris flows.

An Analysis of Debris Flow Movements Using Rheological Model (레올로지 모델을 이용한 토석류 이동해석)

  • It was proved from the viscosity test for deposits of debris flows(Kim and Seo, 1997) that the property of debris flows could be represented as Bingham plastic model. Based on this bahavior, numerical analysis for the movement of debris flows is carried out by using a computer progran Polyflow which huts been developed for the analysis of the behavior of non-Newtonian fluid. The numerical results obtained from two sites agree well with the movement predicted by an empirical formula. It can be concluded, therefore. that this scheme can be used for the analysis of the movement of debris flow.
