  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics and propagation methods of Prunus species as woody landscape plants. Both the flowering time and the survival rate of grafting were investigated. The results are obtained as follows: The total of flowering period of Prunus species in Kyonggi province area lasted for about 26 days. The flowering time of the species overlaps. These observations suggest that the possibility of interspecific pollination among Prunus species is very high in the kyonggi province area. The total number of flowers in the species in area was in as follows decreasing order : (1) Prunus yedoensis >Prunus pendula var. ascendens > Prunus subhitella > Prunus sesrulata for. fugenzo > Prunus leveillenana var. pendula. The number of carpels in each flower ranged from 0.3 for Prunus subhirtella to 1.8 for Prunus serulata for. fugenzo. In the caseof Prunus sesrulata for. fugenzo, the carpels appeared to be degenerated and thus losted their function. However, there exist two tyoes of Prunus subhirtella. While one type had normal carpel, the other had the degenerated one. The survival rate of grafting was investigated on May 19. Eighty there percent of the plants survived when the grafting was made in the greenhouse in January whereas the plants grafted in nursery in March survived less in that Prunus suhirtella showed 64%, Prunus leveilleana var. pendula 47%, Prunus sesrulata for. fugenzo 43%, Prunus yedoensis 62% and Prunus pendula var. ascendens 24%, respectively. Therefore, it suggested that high humidity and optimal temperature appeared to incase the survival rate of the grated plants. We therefore propose here that grafting should be done in the greenhouse that both humidity and temperature could be controlled to enhance the efficiency of grafting. This will enable as to perform grafting in winter as well.

  • Normally cultured aromatic tobaccos, KA 101 and KA 103, were primed progressively in three-leaf segments, either 7 days before bud, bud, or early flower stage with 7 days interval, respectively, The cured leaves were weighed for yield, graded, analyzed for quality-related constituents including volatile aroma components. Also the cured leaves were manufactured and smoked by panelists. Yield and quality by price decreased with advancing ripeness. Reducing sugar, total nitrogen, protein nitrogen decreased with successive ripeness, but reverse in this trends with nicotine, petroleum ether extracts and volatile acids components. Among volatile neutral components, furfural, furfuryl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, penethyl alcohol and p-cresol decreased, but solanone increased with delayed harvest. Neophytadiene, oxysolanone, furfuryl aceton was highest at mid harvest, which was judged to be best by panelists. Mid harvest, first primed at bud stage when leaf color comes to pale green to yellow green, seems to be highly recommendable.

  • This study was conducted to establish a domestic cultivation system of a newly introduced yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus L.). Growth and yield were investigated in response to various cultural practices, such as seedling raising, planting distance, pinching, and flower pruning. Optimum conditions for raising of seedling were an average temperature of $22^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. Considering of the raising efficiency and the convenience of transplanting, 128 cells per tray was a suitable size. When pinching at a height of 120 cm from late July to early August, yield increased by 22% compared to no pinching. Flower pruning between late August and early September increased the number of tubers and tuber yield by 32% in comparison with no flower pruning. Yam bean seedlings planted at $50cm{\times}30cm$ spacing resulted in 30% yield increase as compared to wider spacing of $100cm{\times}30cm$. Our results thus suggested that the optimal combination of cultural practices ($50{\times}30cm$ planting distance, pinching at 120 cm height, and one time of flower pruning) increase profitability by 107%. All these results suggest high possibility of yam bean as a new income crop in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of plant growth regulators on the growth and development of pot 'Pinto Rose' and 'Pinto Scarlet' geraniums. Plant height was increased by $GA_3$ treatments in both 'Pinto Rose' and 'Pinto Scarlet' geranium. However, the number of branches was not affected by $GA_3$ and daminozide treatments. The combined treatments of $GA_3$ and daminozide delayed the days to first flowering in 'Pinto Scarlet' geranium. Also, in 'Pinto Rose', $GA_3$ or the combination of $GA_3$ and daminozide treatments delayed the first flowering time. 'Pinto Scarlet' geranium was more sensitive to growth regulator treatments than 'Pinto Rose'. The number of flower stalks and branches were increased by uniconazole in 'Pinto Scarlet', while the flower stalk length and canopy diameter were severely decreased by uniconazole treatments in both cultivars. The days to first flowering tended to be delayed by all growth retardant treatments in geranium.

  • Edible insects have gained recognition worldwide as complementary protein sources. Recently, four edible insects were newly allowed to be used as food materials in Korea: the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), the cricket (Velarifictorus asperses), the white-spotted flower chaffer beetle larva (Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis), and the rhinoceros beetle larva (Allomyrina dichotoma). In this study, we evaluated the oxidative stabilities of these four edible insects during cold storage. The insects were sacrificed by blanching for 3 minutes in boiling water. The blanched insects were then stored at $4^{\circ}C$ in an incubator for 42 days. The color values, titratable acidity, peroxide values, acid values, TBARS, contents of VBN, and total plate counts of the insects were measured at days 0, 2, 4, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42, respectively. Blanching decreases oxidative stresses during storage. At day 0, the white-spotted flower chaffer beetle larva showed the highest values for acid value, TBARS, VBN, and microbial counts. Most of the oxidative indicators were significantly changed at day 14 in all four insects, possibly related with the growth on all microbial plates. Based on microbial safety and the oxidative stabilities of lipids and proteins, optimal storage conditions for the cricket, the white-spotted flower chaffer beetle larva, and the rhinoceros beetle larva were 10~14 days at $4^{\circ}C$. Likewise, the mealworm showed rapid oxidation after day 14, but poor qualities were not observed until day 28.

  • Varietal response to cool temperature(18$^{\circ}C$) and short (8hr.)-day treatment were investigated under controlled conditions of Phytotron in the Suwon Agronomy Experiment Station. Five flue-cured and one burley tobacco varieties (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were used, and the length of treatment ranging from 8 to 32 days at 3-day intervals and also includes continuous treatment up to the plants were flowered. The days to flower decreased significantly than the no treatment when the length of treatment was 11 to 14 days for the varieties NC82, Br.21 and NC22NF, and 17 to 26 days for SPG-28, Mc.944 and TC499, respectively. And also the number of leaves decreased significantly than the no treatment when the length of treatment was 8 days for NC22NF, 11days for NC82 and Br.21, 14 days for Mc.944, and 17 days for SPG-28 and TC499, respectively. The maximum decreasing ratio of the leaf number by the cool temperature and short-day treatment were 47.7 to 58.5% for NC82, Br.21 and NC22NF, and 38.9% for Mc.944, 33.4% for SPG-28 and 29.0% for TC499, respectively.

  • Basil(Ocimum basilicum L.) is an annual herb that grows wild in hot and humid regions such as tropical Asia and Africa. This study was carried out for resource discovery, propagation, and DB construction of aromatic plants. In order to evaluate the genetic characteristics, 28 kinds of basil seeds were supplied from the Center for Genetic Resources. For basil characteristics, planting date, plant height, growth shape, leaf length, leaf shape, petiole color, petiole, stem color, flower color, after harvest, Ml length including roots, flower length, stem thickness and biological weight were measured. For anthocyanin analysis, only basil with purple color was selected, anthocyanins were extracted with 60% ethanol containing 1% citric acid, a standard quantitative curve was prepared with cyanidin-3-glucoside, and absorbance was measured at 525 nm. Basil planting started around June 16, and the flowering period lasted for a total of 18 days from July 19 to August 5. On August 6, when flowering was completed, morphological characteristics including flower color were measured at the site by an object. The measured basil plant length was 26.6-59.6 cm, leaf length 2.0-7.9 cm, leaf width 0.7-5.2 cm, and petiole 1.3-3.9 cm. The growth pattern of basil was generally straight, medium in shape. The color of the leaves was observed evenly by mixed green, purple, purple and green, and the recesses in the shape of the leaf were also conspicuously observed. A total of three basil flower colors were observed: white, light pink(149P 10P/84), and purple(37V 2.5RP 4/12). During the second growth survey after harvest, the total length including the basil roots is 26.7-52.0 cm, the flower length is 8.2-29.3cm, the stem thickness is 7.1-15.9mm, the number of stem nodes is 3-12 nodes, and the total weight of the basil was measured to be about 218-1540 g. There are a total of 16 types of basil expressed in purple, and the anthocyanin content was measured to be 73.74 ~ 380.72 mg/100g.

  • Flavonoid contents of common buckwheat (cv. Kitawase) and tartary buckwheat (cv. Hokkai T 8, Hokkai T 9 and Hokkai T 10) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover, they were measured at different plant developments such as 10, 18, 20, 22 and 30 days after sowing (DAS) and with plant parts including leaf, stem and flower harvested at 30 DAS. Total flavonoids including chlorogenic acid, four kinds of C-glycosylflavones (orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, isovitexin) and rutin of tartary buckwheats (range of 44.2-54.7, mean 44.2) were found 35% higher than those of common buckwheat (28.9 mg/g dry wt.). Among them, rutin was measured above 80% of total flavonoid contents. The other flavonoids (chlorogenic acid and four kinds of C-glycosylflavones) presented the highest level at 10 DAS and decreased according to plant developments. On the other hand, rutin content of Kitawase presented the highest level (33.6 mg/g dry wt.) at 22 DAS and decreased up to 30 DAS. Rutin content in tartary buckwheat temporarily decreased from 10 to 18 DAS and then reversely increased up to 30 DAS presented the highest level as 'U' curve. In Hokkai T 10, rutin content was found the highest level (53.8 mg/g dry wt.) at 30 DAS. In different plant parts harvested at 30 DAS, rutin content of leaf (range of 42.8-68.0, mean 57.0) was 5.3-fold higher than that of stem (range of 8.0-15.9, 10.8 mg/g dry wt.), regardless of cultivar. Significantly, rutin content (78.7) in the flower of Kitawase was 1.8 times higher than in the leaf and 9.8 times in the stem. Especially, chlorogenic acid content (14.6 mg/g dry wt.) in the flower of Kitawase was 63-fold higher than in the leaf, and 20-fold in the stem.

  • The present study was carried out to elucidate the effect of girdling on the quality and harvest date of the 'Shigyoku' grapes. Among girdled vines, the interval from full bloom to harvest date was 77 days; this was as much as seven days shorter in vines receiving a 20% girdling treatment. With regards to fruit characteristics, significant differences were observed in cluster length, berry number, and berry weight in vines that received girdling treatments. There were also significant differences in cluster weight; 468.2 g, 491.6 g and 504.9 g in the control group, 10% girdling group, and 20% girdling group, respectively. Thus, the use of girdling treatments is an effective approach to increasing cluster weight by 5% in the 10% girdling treatment and 8% in the 20% girdling treatment. The 10% girdling treatment showed significant difference in terms of titrable acidity; in fact, the overall titrable acidity was relatively high among all the girdling treatments. The concentration of anthocyanin increased in 20% girdling treatment, but there were no significant differences in anthocyanin concentration among girdling treatments. Berry color developed rapidly in vines that received girdling treatment.

  • This study was conducted to identity the effect of plant growth retardants such as paclobutrazol, ethephon, uniconazole and daminozide by drenching on growth of Datura suaveolens 'Orange Star'. Datura suaveolens 'Orange Star' treated with the growth retardants except ethephon was gradually shortened in proportion to the treated concentration of growth retardants. Especially, uniconazole treatment dramatically short ed stem height and width of plant, diminished leaf width and length and also shortened the days to flowering, and increased flowering times per year. On the contrary, ethephon treatment showed the opposite affect such as higher plant width and plant height, increased days to flowering, and decreased the number of flower times. Dwarfing by plant growth retardants in Datura suaveolens 'Orange Star' was effective in orders of uniconazole, daminozide and paclobutrazol.
