  • Power quality monitoring is the cornerstone for power quality analysis, diagnosis and improvement. The measurement of power quality (PQ) evolves from instantaneous metering to continuous monitoring. Furthermore, recent technologies enable us to construct more flexible, reliable, rapid and economical power quality monitoring system (PQMS). Therefore, this paper presents an improved PQMS with a new distributed monitoring structure. The proposed PQMS consists of a PQ meter, PQ analyzer and GUI. The PQ meter only collects raw data and the PQ analyzer performs power quality analysis. It has several advantages compared to conventional structures in economic efficiency, modularity, speed, etc. PQ monitoring algorithms to catch steady-state trends and to detect PQ events are also adapted to the proposed structure. Using the proposed structure and monitoring algorithm, a prototype PQMS is constructed and real-time testing is performed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify factors affecting the quality of life among community-dwelling older women with urinary incontinence (UI). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 475 women aged 60 or over who were recruited from 10 primary health care facilities in rural Korea. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic, health-related, and UI-related characteristics. The quality of life was assessed using Incontinence Quality of Life (I-QOL). SPSS/WIN 23.0 program was used to analyze descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation, and hierarchical regression. Results: Of 475 subjects, 180 (37.9%) had urinary incontinence. The mean scores of I-QOL of women with and without UI were 76.87 and 94.77, respectively. The results of hierarchical regression analysis show that the Questionnaire for Urinary Incontinence Diagnosis total score was the greatest influencing factor, followed by age and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form total score. Conclusion: The study revealed that factors related to UI symptoms are more likely to have impact on the quality of life in women with UI. It suggests that early detection or management of UI is important in improving the quality of life of women with UI.

  • Water quality modeling was performed for the purpose of diagnosis and prediction of water quality in Gyoung Choen reservoir, using EUTR05/WASP Build model. WASP Builder is capable of visual display in window and it has an advantage of updating and modification for data. Field data of 1992, Spring, Summer, and Fall, were used to calibrate model and these results were validated using data of 2000, Spring, Summer, and Fall. The reservoir was divided into 4 epilimnion segments. Water quality system for modeling were consist of BOD, Chlorophyll-a, DO, $NH_3-N$, $NO_3-N$, T-N, $PO_4-P$, T-P. The results of water quality modelling using EUTR05/WASP Builder, a range of the Correlation for calibration of BOD, T-N, T-P, and Chlorophyll-a according to three seasons are 0.63~0.90, 0.81~0.97, 0.75~0.98, and 0.77~0.98 respectively. And the correlation between simulated and observed values for verification of BOD, T-N, T-P, and Chlorophyll-a according to three seasons are 0.93, 0.94, 0.81, and 0.80 respectively. Among the pollutant sources for a basin of the Gyoung Choen reservoir, generated amount of livestock is the highest and BOD, T-N, T-P of generated loading percentage are 94%, 81%, and 95%. So, we suppose that inflow load amount will decrease 50% and increase 50% only livestock about current load amount. If increasing load amount of livestock 50% in segment 2 and 3, BOD, T-N, and T-P simulated increasing to range of $0.02~0.15mg/{\ell}$, $0.029~0.08mg/{\ell}$, $0.011~0.029mg/{\ell}$ in comparison with current water quality

  • Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is the most common form of diabetic neuropathy, and causes a significant morbidity with an impact on the quality of life in the patients with diabetes. Since DPN frequently induces foot deformity and ulceration, which finally leads to foot amputation, the early detection and treatment is very important for the prevention of a permanent structural change. In the early stage of DPN, the diagnostic methods which can evaluate the function or structure of small nerve fibers should be employed because small nerve fibers are first involved in the course of DPN. However, the nerve conduction study cannot reflect the function of the small nerve fibers, and thus, has a definite limitation in the early diagnosis of DPN. For the early detection of DPN, electrodiagnostic data should be interpreted on a clinical context, along with the careful evaluation of the small nerve fiber functions using the tests such as the analysis of intraepidermal nerve fiber density.

  • Background : Severance Hospital is an university hospital which has 1,580 beds. A LAN system was installed in the Medical Record Department in 1992 and discharge abstract data have been added to the discharge abstract database(DB) The previous work flow in the Medical Record Department had 5 levels: 1) chart collection from wards, 2) assembling, 3) abstracting data from medical record on worksheet by 2 RRAs, 4) checking deficiencies and coding diagnosis and procedures by 4 RRAs, 5) inputting the data into the discharge abstract data base by 1 RRA. The average processing time took 19.3 days from the patient discharge date. It had the production of monthly statistical report delayed. Besides, it caused the users in the hospital to complain. Methods : A CQI team was organized to find a way to shorten the processing time less than 10 days. The team identified the factors making the processing time long and integrated three levels from the 3rd level into one. Each of 7 RRAs performed the integrated level on her workstation instead of taking one of three separate levels. The comparison of processing time before and after the changes was made with 3'846 discharges of April, 1999 and 4,189 discharges of August, 1999. Results : The average processing time was shortened from 19.3 days to 8.7 days. Especially the integrated level took only 3.6 days, compared with 12.3 days before the change. The percentage of finishing up the whole processing within 10 days from discharge was increased up to 77.6%, which was 2.4% before the integration. The prevalence of error in data input was not increased in the new method. Conclusions : The integrated processing method has the following advantages: 1) the expedition of production of monthly statistical report, 2) the increase of utilizing rate of dischare abstract data by Billing Dept, Emergency Room, QI Dept., etc., 3) the improvement of intradepartmental work follow, 4) the enhancement of medical record quality by checking the deficiencies earlier than before.

  • Objective: This study aimed to determine effects of doctor-patient communication on the quality of life among breast cancer survivors in 16 communities in southern China. Methods: Multistage random sampling was to use to recruit 260 females from the Guangzhou Cancer Registry Database who were diagnosed with breast cancer. A questionnaire provided data on the doctor-patient communication (including the doctor's attitude, the patient's participation with the medical decision and information about the disease) and QOL (quality of life), as measured using FACT-B. Univariate analysis, non-conditional logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations between the doctor-patient communication and QOL. Results: Females who received good attitudes from doctors demonstrated higher FACT-B (OR=4.65, 95% CI: 1.68-12.86), social well-being (OR=5.88, 95% CI: 2.16-16.05), emotional well-being (OR=4.77, 95% CI: 1.92-11.88), and functional well-being ((OR=5.26, 95% CI: 1.90-14.52) compared to the females who encountered worse attitudes from their doctor, adjusting for age, education, marriage, employment, family income, years since diagnosis, TNM stage, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and side effects, particularly when the TNM stage was 0-II and the patients exhibited no side effects. Regardless of the length of time after diagnosis, doctors' good attitudes resulted in higher QOL scores. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the doctor-patient communication has a significant association with the QOL of breast cancer survivors, mainly dependent on the doctors' attitude. Effective intervention is required to develop optimal doctor-patient communication.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) uses strong magnetic field to image the cross-section of human body and has excellent image quality with no risk of radiation exposure. Because of above-mentioned advantages, MRI has been widely used in clinical fields. However, the noise generated in MRI degrades the quality of medical images and has a negative effect on quick and accurate diagnosis. In particular, examining a object with a detailed structure such as brain, image quality degradation becomes a problem for diagnosis. Therefore, in this study, we acquired T2 weighted 3D data of multiple sclerosis disease using BrainWeb simulation program, and used quantitative evaluation factors to find appropriate slice thickness among 1, 3, 5, and 7 mm. Coefficient of variation and contrast to noise ratio were calculated to evaluate the noise level, and root mean square error and peak signal to noise ratio were used to evaluate the similarity with the reference image. As a result, the noise level decreased as the slice thickness increased, while the similarity decreased after 5 mm. In conclusion, as the slice thickness increases, the noise is reduced and the image quality is improved. However, since the edge signal is lost due to overlapped signal, it is considered that selecting appropriate slice thickness is necessary.
