Vietnam has experienced a high economic growth since early 2000s. One of the reasons for this successful economic growth is foreign direct investment that has been invested mainly in manufacturer sector in Vietnam. In this paper, we examine the impacts of foreign direct investment to Vietnam on its exports using quarterly data from 2000:1 to 2017:4. Since all the variables in our model is subject to I(1), we apply Fully Modified OLS(FMOLS) to estimate a cointegration vectors. Our results show that there exists a long-run relationship among Export, FDI, Exchange rate and G20 countries' GDP. Also, we find that FDI has a positive effect on Vietnam's export, which was statistically significant. Our results support the hypothesis that the FDI to Vietnam since 2000 has an export-oriented feature.
Purpose - The principle aim of this study is to further investigate the relationship between market diversity and export performance. We examine the benefits and costs of geographic market diversity regarding the number of countries exported to by firms on their export performance. Based on the financial risk reduction model and the entry costs model, we propose a way to incorporate the costs and benefits aspects of market diversity. Design/methodology - To empirically investigate our research question, the curvilinear relationship between market diversity and export performance, we built a secondary panel data set between 2015 and 2019, containing 17,863 observations of Korean exporting companies. A generalized least squares panel estimator with fixed effects was employed to test the hypothesis, and the statistical package, Stata 14, was used. Findings - Our main findings are as follows: As market diversity increases, export performance increases because exporters can diversify and reduce financial risks in export markets. However, the relationship between the two does not grow. As it peaks, the entry costs increase due to the high market diversity, thereby outweighing the benefits, leading, eventually to decrease in the export performance. Consequently, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between market diversity and export performance. Originality/value - In the export and trade literature, the impact of market diversity on export performance has not been addressed yet, despite the importance of this subject. Many scholars have assumed a positive linear relationship between the two, considering only the decrease in market risks as the number of overseas markets increases, without examining the increase in the entry and management costs. Therefore, our study contributes by providing a new perspective for analyzing the characteristics and outcomes of market diversity.
Purpose - This study aims to identify the internal capabilities that export companies need to possess in order to utilize FTAs and to propose ways to expand their export performance through them. To achieve this goal, the study analyzed the internal factors that affect FTA utilization from a resource-based perspective, such as Origin Management Competency, Information Acquisition Competency, contract Management Competency, and Commitment to Export, based on prior research on corporate capabilities in the field of management and FTA-related research. The study ultimately aims to confirm whether a company's FTA utilization contributes to its export performance through the management and response to its internal factors for FTA utilization. Design/methodology - To achieve the research objective, this study conducted a literature review related to FTA utilization and identified the internal factors of companies that affect FTA by classifying them into Origin Management Competency, Information Acquisition Competency, contract Management Competency, and Commitment to Export Based on this, a final research model was developed, hypotheses were set through a preliminary study survey, and conclusions were drawn by analyzing the data of 312 companies. Findings - The empirical analysis results indicate that Origin Management Competency and Contract Management Competency have a positive impact on FTA utilization, while Information Acquisition Competency and Commitment to Export do not have a statistically significant impact on FTA utilization. Based on these findings, this study suggests measures for efficient FTA utilization for companies that want to utilize FTAs. Additionally, FTA utilization has a positive impact on export performance. In other words, the extent to which companies utilize the signed agreements has a positive impact on their performance. Based on these results, this study identifies the characteristics of companies that want to utilize FTAs and proposes measures for future efficient FTA utilization. Originality/value - This study has confirmed that in order for companies to utilize FTAs, they must meet the requirements of the FTA. To this end, the study has concluded that it is important to manage and address internal factors such as Origin Management Competency, Information Acquisition Competency, contract Management Competency, and Commitment to Export to increase FTA utilization. Based on these results, it can be confirmed that it is essential for companies to have an understanding and management of the internal factors that satisfy the requirements of the FTA in order to utilize the FTA.
In this paper, we explore the effects of export insurance on the Korea's export by using the gravity model with the data of 112 countries that Korea exports on years of 2005 and 2009. For this model, we used the Korea export as a dependent variables and real GDP, distance between the two nations, export insurance, country credit rating of the Korea's counterpart countries and FTA were used as an independent variables. The results show that the underwriting performance of the export insurance and the sovereign credit rating of the export counterpart countries have the positive impact on Korea's export. Also, the impact of the export insurance is more increasing to the Korea exportation but the importance of the economy size of the export counterpart countries decreased after 2008 global financial crisis. Particularly, the influence to the export by the sovereign credit rating has diminished in that period and this seems to be due to the export insurance has increased. These results imply that the export insurance plays an important role to promote the Korea's exportation since 2008 global recession. Especially, if the recession continues, then there will be more crippling impact to the small-mid size companies rather than large size companies. Therefore, Korea government should do their best to continuously expand the export insurance for the purpose of increasing Korea exportation, expecially to the small-mid size companies.
Purpose - This research intends to find out whether R&D cost stickiness shows differentiated aspects depending on exports in Korea. A cost behavior that indicates a lower rate of costs decrease when sales decrease than the rate of costs increase when sales increase is called cost stickiness. This sticky cost behavior is caused by considering the adjusting costs. This study aims to empirically verify that R&D cost stickiness is greater in export firms than in non-export firms. We also investigate the effect of exports on R&D cost stickiness is nonlinear. Design/methodology - We obtain data for the analysis from Kis-Value and TS2000 from 2012 to 2020. This study tests for R&D cost stickiness of exports using the cost stickiness model developed by Anderson et al. (2003) that is used in a lot of prior literature. To explore the nonlinear behavior of R&D cost stickiness we include a quadratic term of exports in our model. Findings - The results of our analysis are as follows. First, we observed that R&D costs of export firms are more sticky than that of non-export firms. Our result indicated that export firms are less likely to reduce R&D costs in decreasing sales periods in preparation for future sales recovery. Second, our empirical evidence shows that export firms view R&D costs much favorably. However, we hypothesize that the effect of export intensity on R&D costs may not necessarily be linear. Our result shows the effect of exports intensity on R&D stickiness is thus nonlinear, forming a reverse U-shaped curve. When export intensity exceeds a certain threshold, the growth rate of R&D costs appears to be viewed negatively. Firms with relatively high export intensity do not support R&D costs, viewing them as taking away firms' resources from other more productive costs. On the contrary, those with export intensity under the threshold view R&D costs as beneficial and therefore promote further R&D costs when revenue decreases. Originality/value - The results of this research can contribute academically to the expansion of empirical research on R&D cost stickiness. R&D cost stickiness varies by industry. As a result of our research, the managers of export firms recognize the importance of R&D to lead innovation. We expected that this research contributes to further studies on R&D costs and cost stickiness. Second, this research has implications from a business perspectives. Our findings of export firms' R&D stickiness suggest that export firms' managers should consider keeping the stickiness of R&D when revenue decreases because it is essential for exporting firms to maintain their R&D stickiness to secure long-term competitiveness. R&D stickiness can be used on a practical basis to emphasize the need for continuous investment in exporting firms' R&D activities.
As the digital era accelerates, traditional perspectives have limitations in explaining the success or failure of export performance. The purpose of this study is to analyze new factors affecting export performance from the perspective of customer experience, which has emerged as an important factor in securing a competitive advantage and generating organizational performance. After deriving hypotheses based on literature review and discussion, a research model is designed in which three factors of customer experience such as understanding customer's objectives, customer value creation capability, and customer journey management are the antecedents, and export performance is the dependent variable. This model also includes organizational agility and personal contact as the moderating variables. To verify the hypotheses, multiple regression analysis was conducted on the collected data drawn from 198 SME exporters. According to the analysis results, it was found that all three antecedents positively affected export performance. In particular, the organizational agility and personal contact were confirmed to have a moderating effect that creates better export performance by interacting with customer value creation capability. The theoretical significance of this study is to find that effective customer experience management can be a key factor in creating export performance. The results suggest that checking the overall customer journey, exporters should select and intervene to intensively manage key touch points that can have a decisive impact on the quality of customer experience. At the end of the paper, practical implications to be considered in creating export performance through effective customer experience management are presented.
This paper intends to increase the performance of export support programs for small-to-medium sized firms promoted by Korea government. A research construct is suggested for effective government support program targeted on the global marketing capability. The data is collected from the firms received the support more than once by Korean governments. The results are shown as follows. First, it is found that those firms who have high propensity to be involved in export business have shown high performance. Second, the firms with high global marketing capability have shown good performance. To be more specific, organizational commitment, strategic initiative, business differentiation, and market knowledge for target markets are found to be critical factors in successful export support program. The business differentiation strategy in target market is very critical. Finally, the degree of program management effectiveness is found to be important in high performance firms. It means that for those firms, much more advanced programs need to be developed. The government should develop diversified programs by considering the degree of global marketing capability.
Purpose - The IT convergence industry, which is the subject of this study, is the main strategy field during the 4th industrial revolution era. Against this background, it is urgent to establish policy measures to survive and spread export products in the global industries. Research, design, data and methodology - In order to achieve this goal, we conducted the Importance - Performance Analysis (IPA) and found that it is necessary to develop tailor - made marketing support for small and medium sized IT exporters and to develop export strategy products with competitive technologies. Results - Above all, customized marketing support for IT export-related SMEs was needed. Next, in the first quadrant, strategic products, qualitative level, global, value added, and information systems were included, and it was found that 'development of export strategic products with competitive technologies' was necessary. In the third quadrant, related variables calculated at present time are not urgent variables. Conclusions - In this study, it would be necessary to calculate the additional implications of the variables that are not considered in this study, including future studies, because the methods considered here as analysis variables are carried out in comparison with the previous studies.
Purpose - Currently, the foreign trade environment in China has shifted to a very different system. Korean enterprises have been forced to compete with Chinese enterprises in today's world market owing to the economic growth and technical improvement in China. Research design, data, and methodology - The author visited Korean export enterprises in Shanghai from January 5 to 12, 2014 to implement a questionnaire survey and conduct in-depth interviews with the local enterprises. The author investigated the Shenyang area using e-mail communication. For the questionnaire, one copy of the questionnaire was given to each business and to a staff member for each of the products when a company sold multiple products. Results - Selling cost advantage, efficiency of economic scale, and product differentiation had the most influence on Korean enterprises' export strategy to China. Additionally, entry barrier, product differentiation, and concentration all had an influence on Korean enterprise export strategy to China as well. Conclusion - Korean enterprises developed strategies for price priority, economies of scale, and product differentiation based on changes in the competitive structure in the Chinese market.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the North Korea's net export to China and Liaoning on the North Korean economic growth. Design/methodology/approach - This study collects the data on the net export of North Korea to China and Liaoing from General Administration of Customs, People's Republic of China. Vector Autoregression(VAR) is also employed for the analysis. Findings - First, North Korea's net export to all of China and Liaoning gives the positive effect on North Korean economic growth. Second, the nuclear test of North Korea gives the negative effect on the North Korean economic growth. Third, the net export to China and Liaoning granger causes the North Korean economic growth. Lastly, the nuclear test of North Korea also granger causes the North Korean economic growth. Research implications or Originality - The estimation results show the net export of North Korea to China as well as Liaoning is important to the economic growth. Therefore, we need to examine North Korea's trades with specific region as well as all of China in order to enhance the North Korean economic growth.
