  • To elucidate possible challenges for outdoor practical use of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), we compared conventional Si solar cells with DSCs. DSC modules still require a larger area than conventional Si solar modules to attain the same rated output because of lower photoelectron-chemical conversion efficiency. However, in backup systems by using batteries, the measured data shows that DSCs generated 15% more electricity than Si solar cells of the same rated output power in the same interval of cloudy daylight. Moreover, the battery charging time of DSCs is about 1 hour faster than the same rate of Si solar cells under outdoor cloudy daylight. This result also indicates that conversion efficiency obtained by the certified condition less than AM 1.5 condition does not always coincide with the electricity generated outdoors daily, and it is not a crucial measure to evaluate the performance of solar cells.

  • Protection of user service becomes increasingly important since even very short interruption of service due to link or node failure will cause huge data loss and incur tremendous restoration cost in high speed network environment. Thus fast and efficient protection and restoration is one of the most important issues to be addressed. Protection methods have been proposed to provide efficiency and stability in optical networks. In this paper, an original network is separated into several domains using Hamiltonian cycle. and link protection is performed on the cycles of the domains. We have shown that protection path length can be decreased up to $57{\%}$ with marginal increase of backup capacity. Our proposed method can provide high-speed protection with marginal increase of protection capacity.

  • In this paper, we propose a subnetwork-based segment restoration scheme to reduce the restoration time and restoration resources. And we compare and analyze the restoration performance according to the size of divided subnetworks. Segment restoration is based on network partitioning where a large network is divided into several small subnetworks and the end-to-end data path is divided into multiple segments according to the subnetworks. In segment restoration, the link/node failure is restored by segment instead of end-to-end path. Because most faults are restored within the subnetwork, the restoration performance can be improved. From the simulation analysis, we verified that the proposed segment restoration has advantage of restoration time and backup resource utilization.

  • Proper management on user-driven virtual circuits (VCs) is essential for seamless operation of virtual networks. The Network Provisioning System (NPS) is useful software for creating user-driven VCs automatically and must take fault management into account for physical layer impairments on user-driven VCs. This paper addresses a user-driven and trusty protection management in an NPS with an open standard Network Service Interface (NSI), as a contribution to show how to implement the user-driven and trusty protection management required for user-driven VCs. In particular, it provides a RESTful web service Interface for Configuration and Event management (RICE) that enable management of a distinguished data and control plane VC status between Network Service Agents (NSAs) in the event of a node or link fault and repair in a domain. This capability represents a contribution to show how network and protection events in a domain can be monitored between NSAs (NPSs with the NSI) in multiple domains. The implemented NPS controls and manages both the primary and backup VC with disjoint path in a user-driven manner. A demonstration to verify RICE API's capability is addressed for the trusty protection in the dynamic VC network.

  • This paper propose a new power conditioner topology with intelligent power management controller that integrates multiple renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy and fuel cell energy with battery backup to make best use of their operating characteristics and obtain better reliability than that could be obtained by single renewable energy based power supply. The proposed embedded controller is programmed for maintaining a constant voltage at PCC, maximum power point tracking for solar PV panel and WTG and power flow control by regulating the reference currents of the controller on instantaneous basis based on the power delivered by the sources and load demand. Instantaneous variation in reference currents of the controller enhances the controller response as it accommodates the effect of continuously varying solar insolation and wind speed in the power management. The power conditioner uses a battery bank with embedded controller based online SOC estimation and battery charging system to suitably sink or source the input power based on the load demand. The simulation results of the proposed power management system for a standalone solar/WTG/fuel cell fed hybrid power supply with real time solar radiation and wind velocity data collected from solar centre, KEC for a sporadically varying load demand is presented in this paper and the results are encouraging in reliability and stability perspective.

DSC modules still need the larger area than conventional Si solar modules to attain the same rated output because of lower photoelectron-chemical conversion efficiency. However, using batteries backup systems, the measured data shows that DSCs gathered over 12% more electricity than Si solar cells of the same rated output power in same outdoor condition. Moreover, battery charging time of DSC is about 1 hour faster than same rate of Si solar module. In this paper, 12 single DSC cells prepared for 4 serialized DSC cells was connected in 3 row parallel which have same output power rate of Si solar module. This DSC module was practiced generating characteristic experiment over outdoor daylight condition and applied with PV battery charger by using DC-DC converter. The main advantages of DSC module battery charger as compared with conventional Si solar module one are shorter charge time and lower cost.

  • In this study, a comparison was conducted to verify the propellant isolation assembly of the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO). An engineering validation model (EVM) is being developed to simulate the flow of the flight model. Three factors were selected for comparison: the total pressure drop during propellant isolation assembly, the waterhammer by driving thruster valve, and the orifice set up for flow control and damping the waterhammer. The analysis results are compared with EVM test results. In the future, backup data to confirm the design will be established.

  • Batteries are being used in ESS, electric vehicles and uninterruptible power backup systems. Lead-acid batteries are the most used batteries for high capacity power back up equipment due to their high reliability and low price advantages. It is very important to estimate the chargeable capacity(SoH), and many algorithms were proposed to estimate the internal resistance of the battery. In this paper, the Battery Monitoring System(BMS) for high capacity uninterruptible power supply for IDC is proposed. A simple algorithm for estimating internal resistance was proposed. An computational block diagram of the proposed signal processing algorithm and BMS system configuration of CPU and analog circuit were shown. The proposed method was proved useful by presenting data examples of application to actual IDC sites.

  • The mandatory installation of the ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) became an important navigational equipment for navigation officer. In addition, ECDIS is a key component of the ship's digitalization in conjunction with various navigational equipment. Meanwhile, cyber-attacks emerge as a new threat along with digitalization. Damage caused by cyber-attacks is also reported in the shipping sector, and IMO recommends that cybersecurity guidelines be developed and included in International Security Management (ISM). This study analyzed the cybersecurity hazards of ECDIS, where various navigational equipment are connected. To this end, Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) was conducted on navigation officer using ECDIS. As a result, the development of technologies for cyber-attack detection and prevention should be priority. In addition, policies related to 'Hardware and Software upgrade', 'network access control', and 'data backup and recovery' were analyzed as contents to be maintained. This paper is significant in deriving risk factors from the perspective of ECDIS users and analyzing their priorities, and it is necessary to analyze various cyber-attacks that may occur on ships in the future.
