Comparison of color and major components of hempseed oils extracted with pressuring and extruding methods (압착식, 압출식 착유 대마 종실유의 색깔과 주요성분 비교)

  • Hemp [Cannabis sativa L.] has been cultivated as a fiber crop for long history, but it was a good oil crop because its seed contain plenty of lipid which is high ratio of unsaturated fatty acid. Hemp seed oil was extracted with a extruding method in many countries including Europe. The color of oil extracted with extruding method is dark green which could be difficult to attract consumer's interest in Korea because of insufficient information about hemp seed oil. This study was conducted to know correct information about hemp seed oils which were extracted with pressuring and extruding methods. In extruding method, seeds were crushed during the extracting process and discharged oil cake in shape of thin ribbon, but maintained seed shape although the seed were slightly flatted in pressuring method. Oil yield were higher in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method. The oil have lower degree of lightness but higher degree of greenness and yellowness in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method because of higher content of chlorophyll A, B and carotenoid. In fatty acid composition, the ratio of palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and ${\gamma}$-linolenic acid were higher but linoleic acid and ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid were lower in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method. The content of total tocopherol and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol were lower in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method.

Preparation and Evaluation of Mutivitamin Emulsion (복합비타민 유제의 제조와 평가)

  • Water-lipid soluble multivitamin formulations were widely used to reduce the disease and stress of animals as husbandry has made a remarkable progress in recent. But the efficiency of these formulations is far from satisfactory. So, this study was attempted to develop the physically and chemically stable and useful multivitamin o/w emulsion. Multivitamin o/w emulsion composed of water, soybean oil (10%, v/v), vitamin A, D, E, K, $B_2,\;B_6,\;B_{12}$ and panthenol. To make a stable o/w emulsion, the egg lecithin (2%, w/v) and glycerin (2.5%, w/v) were used for emulsifier and thickening agent, respectively. The oil in water emulsion system was manufactured by microfluidizer and the physicochemical stability of this emulsion was evaluated. The average particle size and interfacial tension were measured. From the result of interfacial tension tested, critical micelle concentration of the egg lecithin was 0.5% (w/v) and optimal concentration for the preparation of emulsion was 2% (w/v). The mean particle size was about $0.6\;{\mu}m$ which was suitable for injections. Short-term accelerated stability as physical stability study was tested by centrifuging and freeze-thawing the emulsion samples. The additions of vitamins resulted in the increment of particle size and reduction of physical stability of emulsion. But it is not an enormous problem for the stability of emulsion. Also, we have performed the long-period preservation stability test for the vitamins. All vitamins were analysed by HPLC. The result of storage under $4^{\circ}C$ and dark conditions demonstrated that all vitamins were maintained stable at least 16 weeks, except for vitamin $B_{12}$.

Morphological Characteristics of Seeds in Medicinal Plants of Umbelliferae (산형과 약용작물 종자의 형태적 특성)

  • The most typical morphological characteristics of seeds of eight species in Umbelliferae are summarized as follows: 1. The common characteristics of seeds in Umbelliferae were bi-partite fruits, compound of 2-seeds, (fruitlet) oil canals and funiculus or carpaphore. 2. Seed shape of Umbelliferae were oblong or elliptic and ovate; seed colors were yellow, pale yellow or brown, dark brown or black. 3. Seed size ranged from 2 to 7mm in length and 2∼5mm in width. Angelica dahurica bore the largest seed while Ligusticum acutilobum showed the smallest. The 1000-seed weight ranged from 1. 7g in Bupleurum falcatum to 3.9g in Angelica gigas.

  • The rhizome of Acorus calamus Linn. is commonly known as "Vacha" in indigenous systems of medicine. It is distributed in marshy tracts of Kashmir, Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), Manipur and the Naga hills. It is regularly cultivated in Koratagere Taluk in Karnataka and other parts of India. This study deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the dried rhizomes of Acorus calamus collected from DehraDun (Uttaranchal), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). The commercial sample procured from Delhi market was also evaluated to observe the difference between collected and market samples. Dried rhizome is vertically compressed, pale yellow to dark brown and occasionally orangish brown in colour. Transverse section showed two distinct region with scattered, concentric vascular bundles surrounded by fibrous bundle sheath. Some vascular bundles just beneath the endodermis devoid of bundle sheath. Though the botanical and physico-chemical characters of all the samples were quite similar but some variations were observed in High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) fingerprint profile, the essential oil content and total percentage of asarone which was found to be highest in Lucknow and lowest in Delhi market sample. These variations may be explained due to some edaphic factors or storage conditions. An attempt was also made to test antioxidant activity (in vitro) and it was found to be 88% at 0.2 g/ml concentration.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Fullerene($C_{60}$) Derivative with Photoresponsive Azobenzene Group (광감응형 아조벤젠기를 갖는 신규 플러렌 유도체의 합성과 물성분석)

  • A novel fullerene derivative with photoresponsive azobenzene group was designed and synthesized, and its photoresponsive properties were reported. Starting from 4-nitrophenol, compound 1, which is containing fullerene moiety connected to azobenzene group through covalent linkage was synthesized by 5 steps. All the intermediates and the final compound were characterized by $^1H$, $^{13}C$-NMR, FAB-Mass or elemental analysis. Compound 1 exhibited the expected photoresponsive behavior. Chloroform solution($10^{-5}M$) of it served to maximize the absorption at 351 nm corresponding to the trans-azobenzene chromophore. Irradiation of this solution with 365 nm light resulted in photoisomerization to cis-azobenzene, as evidenced by decrease in the absorbance at 351 nm and an increase in absorbance at 450nm. A photostationary state was reached within about 150 s. Thermal reversion to the original spectrum was observed over the course of about 6 h at room temperature in the dark. However, exposure to bright sun light for about 5 s also effect almost complete reversion to the trans-isomer. This indicates that there is no strong steric influence on the trans-cis reversible isomerization of compound 1.

ERS SAR observations of the Korean coastal waters

  • The processes of regional scales in the East Korean coastal waters were investigated by analysis of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images taken by the European Research Satellites ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat. More than 500 quick look frames taken in 1991-2003 were examined to detect the frames with clearly surface expressions of oceanic phenomena. 26 ERS-1/2 SAR and 11 Envisat wide swath Advanced SAR (ASAR) frames were selected and obtained from the European Space Agency in a form of the precision high-resolution images. The following oceanic phenomena and processes were evident in the radar imagery through the Korean costal waters: fronts, currents, eddies, internal waves, island and ship wakes, oil pollution, etc. They manifested themselves in the field of sea surface roughness, their scale ranged from several tens meters to about 100 km. The most common morphology of these phenomena was a series of contrast dark or light curvilinear lines and bands. The joint analysis of the discussed SAR images with other satellite and in situ data supported and enhanced our interpretation of SAR signatures.

Preparation and Quality of Uncooked-Colored Wine Using Black Rice (흑미를 이용한 무증자 유색주의 제조와 품질)

  • In order to study the quality of uncooked-colored wine by using polished black rice(PBR) and glucoamylase, the mixture ration of PBR ws investigated. The growths of yeast and lactic acid bacteria, pH and alcohol concentration of the colored wine prepared by adding PBR in the range of 20 to 100% were higher than those of polished rice only, whereas the contents of residual sugars, total free amino acids and fusel oil of the colored wine were lower. The colored wine prepared by 20% PBR and that of over 80% PBR showed a light red color and a dark red, respectively. The optimal addition ratios of PBR evaluated by palatability of color and flavor, and sensory overall quality was 40 to 60%.

Temperature Effect on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Medicinal Umbelliferae Plants

  • Umbelliferae medicinal crops have low germination under natural condition. Special objective of this study is to investigate morphological characteristics of seeds and effects of environmental factors such as light and temperature on their germination and seedling growth in Umbelliferae plants, using them as oriental medicine materials. Fruits of Umbelliferae are bi-partite type and form 2 seeds. Their oil canals and funiculus or carpaphore has apparently specific shape. Seed shape of Buplerum falcatum, Ligusticum acutilobum and Foeniculum vulgare are oblong, Ledeboutiella seseloides, Angelica dahurica, Angelica gigas elliptic, and Ostericum koreanum ovate. Color of seed coats varied from yellow to dark brown. Seed size was 3.2 to 6.9 mm in length, 1.7 to 4.9 mm in width. One thousand-seed weight of Buplerum falcatum was lowest(at 1,660 mg) and Ledebouriella seseloides and Angelica gigas were relatively highest(at 3,970 mg) having larger size than any others. Optimum temperatures for seed germination and seedling growth ranged from 20 to $25^{\circ}C$ and especially temperature at $25^{\circ}C$ improved seed germinations of Ledebouriella seseloides, Angelica dahurica and Ligusticum acutilobum regardless of light condition.

The Comparison of Chemical Compounds in Korean and Chinese Sesame Seeds" (한국산 및 중국산 참깨의 화학성분 비교)

  • Sesame samples used in this study were Korean variety cultivated in Chochiwon City of Korea (KvKc), Chinese variety cultivated in Jilin Province of China(CvCc), Chinese variety cultivated in Chochiwon city of Korea(CvKc) and Korean variety cultivated in Jilin Province of China(KvCc). The extraction yields of sesame oils from KvKc, CvCc, CvKc and KvCc were 47.8%, 48.1%, 48.6% and 49.3% respectively. The color value (L value) of sesame oil from KvKc was lower than that of CvCc and KvKc sesame oil showed dark brown color. The composition of neutral lipid, glycolipid and phospholipid of free lipids from KvKc and U sesame oils were 93.1%, 6.6%, 0.2% and 94.7%, 4.6%, 0.8% respectively. Major fatty acids of KvKc and CvCc sesame were usaturated fatty acids, such as oleic and linoleic acid. Total composition of the two major fatty acids of KvKc was 84.6% which was almost same with that of CvCc. However the composition of oleic and linoleic acid of KvKc were 47.1% and 37.5%, while the composition of CvCc were 40.5% and 44.3%. When cross-cultivated, the composition of oleic and linoleic acid of CvKc were 41.0% and 43.5%, while the composition of KvCc were 42.0% and 43.7%. The contents of total amino acids and essential amino acids of KvKc were 713 mg% and 309 mg%, which were much higher than those of CvCc. When cross-cultivated, the content of total amino acids of KvCc was 44% lower than that of KvKc while the content of total amino acids of CvKc was 36% higher than that of CvCc.
