Analysis on the Differences of Point of View between Architect and Urban Planner on the Evaluation of International Urban Design Competition (국제설계경기 평가에서 건축가와 도시계획가의 관점차이 분석)

  • During the development process of mega-project, individual buildings including skyscrapers are built following the master plan. It is not a difficult thing to see the gap of standpoint between the urban planners and architects on the project. This study aims to analyze the difference between architect and urban planner's point of view in evaluating international design competition works which the internationally distinguished honorable design companies(SOM, Jerde Partnership, Studio Daniel Libeskind, Foster+Partners and Asymptote Architecture) submitted as the ideas of Yongsan International Business District Design. Furthermore, we made an attempt to quantify the weight of each factors of urban design by each group. Architect and urban planner's viewpoint were revealed with seven architects and seven urban planners evaluating the international design competition works through AHP(Analytical Hierarchy Process). AHP structure was made of two step hierarchy in terms of Master Plan and Landmark Tower. Eight evaluation criteria were set up such as the concept, land use, transportation, feasibility of Master Plan and the concept, location, functional efficiency and aesthetic beauty of Landmark Tower. Results show that Architect have different point of view from that of urban planner. While the architect's weight of evaluation criteria is on the Landmark Tower(0.505), urban planner's weight is on Master Plan(0.642). Feasibility, the location of Landmark Tower and land-use are very important evaluation criteria to architect and urban planner in common. Functional efficiency of Landmark Tower is in architect's favour and transportation is in urban planner.

Adorno's Negative Aesthetic Interpretation of Meta-phenomena in Architectural Design - With a Focus on Mimetic Moments in Generation of Concepts - (건축디자인의 메타성에 대한 아도르노의 부정미학적 해석 - 개념발생의 미메시스적 계기를 중심으로 -)

  • This study relates to meta-phenomena in architectural design. Among others, this study aims to interpret and demonstrate the cognitive thoughts and methodological systems in 'autonomy and instrumentality' presented in works of art by positivist architects focusing on diagrams after the second modernity in addition to earlier formal experiments by John Hejduk, Peter Eisenman, Bernard Tschumi, and Daniel Libeskind. In order to achieve these aims, this study approached the mimetic concepts developed by Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno. Especially, meta-phenomena in the methods of architectural design were connected to productivity in Adorno's mimetic concepts. Also, in terms of formation and creation of works of art, the mimetic backgrounds of Adorno's theories on aesthetics were identified from features of concepts on the part of formal experiments. The results were systemized methodologically based on meta-phenomena appearing in pure arts and overall architectural design. These were presented as a framework to interpret 'autonomy and instrumentality' that exist in the working of negativity and mimesis. In this way, logics and intuition in architectural design as well as methodological systemization of convergent creativity were proved valid. In conclusion, Adorno's mimetic concepts systemized based on negativity and critical awareness may lead to new concepts. It has been proved that it is valid for security of meta-phenomena of architectural design as a production of autonomous spaces for differences and creation.

  • Contemporary architecture is showing its deconstruction and departure from modern architecture based on rationality, such as reductionism or virtualism. This means a shift from a mechanistic and ecological world view to an organic and ecological view, from a deterministic reason to a reason for a possible secret static. This study examines the potential of fractals, a scientific theory of complexity that is emerging as a new paradigm in the 21st century, as an appropriate alternative to contemporary complexity architecture. The method and scope of this study were understood and its features were identified through literature and data research and prior study review. Based on the organic nature of fractal geometry, we analyzed the works of contemporary architects(Frank Gehry, Bernard Tschumi, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Zvi Hecker, Ito Toyo) and studied the possibility of architectural design using the principle of fractal. As a result, fractal geometry, similar to the patterned order of nature, has an infinite set of organizational functionalities in architecture and can be applied in various aspects of design analysis. Architectural designs based on the fractal theory will require more research and development to realize dynamic design representation using digital computers.
