The normal coordinates of a nonclassically damped systems are coupled by nonzero off-diagonal elements of modal damping matrix. The relationship between modal coupling and the frequency separation of the natural modes is presented in this paper. Contrary to widely accepted beliefs, increasing the frequency separation of the natural modes does not neccessarily diminish the effect of modal coupling. Consequently, in the pratical engineering applications, wide frequency separation of the natural modes would not be sufficient for neglecting modal coupling.
A dynamic absorber is used to protect the primary vibration system under the steady-state harmonic disturbance. In a number of cases it appears expedient to install several absorbers of smaller masses instead of one. This may be due to the need of distribute the absorber's response along the construction, restrictions on the absorber's installation. So, we studied characteristics of the primary vibration system for the optimal natural frequency ratio and the optimal damping ratio of serial multi-dynamic absorber. Also we obtained the optimum values of the serial multi-dynamic absorber parameters using computer simulation for the damped primary vibration system. In designing multi-dynamic absorber, we presented for the optimal natural frequency and the optimal damping ratio of multi-dynamic absorbers.
This paper describes the effects of dual dynamic vibration absorbers attached to a primary vibration system with damping. The efficiency of dual dynamic vibration absorbers was investigated with the height of amplitude ratio at the resonance frequency ratio of the damped vibration system according to mass ratio, natural frequency ratio and damping ratio. The variation of amplitude ratio related to frequency ratio of primary vibration system is verified experimentally and theoretically according to dual dynamic vibration systems using computer program designed to find mutual relationship between two absorbers.

A simplified method fur the eigenpair sensitivities of damped system with multiple eigenvalues is presented. This approach employs a reduced equation to determine the sensitivities of eigenpairs of the damped vibratory systems with multiple natural frequencies. In the proposed method, adjacent eigenvectors and orthonormal conditions are used to compute an algebraic equation whose order is (n+m)x(n+m), where n is the number of coordinates and m the number of multiplicity of multiple natural frequencies. The proposed method is an improved Lee and Jung's method which was developed previously. Two equations are used to find eigenvalue derivatives and eigenvector derivatives in Lee and Jung's method. A significant advantage of this approach over Lee and Jung's method is that one algebraic equation newly developed is enough to compute such eigenvalue derivatives and eigenvector derivatives. This method can be consistently applied to both structural systems with structural design parameters and mechanical systems with lumped design parameters. To demonstrate the theory of the proposed method and its possibilities in the case of multiple eigenvalues, the finite element model of the cantilever beam and 5-DOF mechanical system in the case of a non-proportionally damped system are considered as numerical examples. The design parameter of the cantilever beam is its height. and that of the 5-DOF mechanical system is a spring.
Analytical method to analyze the effect of tolerance on the modal characteristic of multi-body systems in dynamic equilibrium position is suggested in this paper. Monte-Carlo method is conventionally employed to perform the tolerance analysis. However, Monte-Carlo method spends too much time for analysis and has a greater or less accuracy depending on sample condition. To resolve these problems, an analytical method is suggested in this paper. Sensitivity equations for damped natural frequencies and the transfer function are derived at the dynamic equilibrium position. By employing the sensitivity information of mass, damping and stiffness matrices, the sensitivities of damped natural frequencies and the transfer function can be calculated.

The main objective of this paper is to propose a new Finite Element (FE) model updating technique for damped beam structures. The present method consists of a FE model updating, a Degree of Freedom (DOF) reduction method and a damping matrix identification method. In order to accomplish the goal of this study, first, a sensitivity-based FE model updating method using the natural frequencies and the zero frequencies is introduced. Second, an Iterated Improved Reduced System (IIRS) technique is employed to reduce the number of DOF of FE model. Third, a damping matrix is estimated using modal damping ratios identified by a curve-fitting method and modified matrices which are obtained through the model updating and the DOF reduction. The proposed FE model updating method is verified using a real cantilever beam attached damping material on one side. The updated result shows that the proposed method can lead to accurate model updating of damped structures.
The concept of the natural frequency is useful for understanding the characters of oscillating systems. However, when a circular cylinder floating horizontally on the water surface is heaving, due to the hydrodynamic forces, the system is not governed by the equation like that of the harmonic one. In this paper, in order to shed some lights on the more correct use of the concept of the natural frequency, a problem of the heaving circular cylinder is analyzed in the frequency domain. Previously, it was thought that the theory of Ursell (1949) could not be used to get the added mass and wave-making damping for short waves, however, they were obtained by applying an accurate collocation method to the theory in this study. Using the so developed numerical method, we found the added mass and wave-making damping of the circular cylinder for the entire range of the frequency. Then, the MCFR(Modulus of Complex Frequency Response) was used to locate the frequency corresponding to the local maximum of MCFR and we define it as the natural frequency. Comparing our results with the previous investigation, we found that the pressure distribution on the cylinder gets close asymptotically to that of a cylinder in infinite fluid OR close to that of the cylinder, that the approximation of the natural frequency by Lee (2008) is different from our new value only by 0.64%, and that the approximation of the heaving system by an equivalent damped harmonic oscillation is not proper by the reason that is clearly shown from the comparison of the shape of the corresponding MCFRs.
This paper presents the effectiveness of the dynamic vibration absorber consisting of a single mass, coil springs and oil damper on the resonance freauency ratio and amplitude ratio for damped linear systems, that is, primary vibration system with damping. The effects of the dynamic vibration absorber are investigated numerically and experimentally for values of mass ratio, natural frequency ratio, and damping ratio. The experimental results show good agreement with calculated ones. As a result, the characteristics shown by the present work are useful in optimal tuning the dynamic vibration absorber in practice.
This paper presents the vibrational characteristics of linear damped vibrational systems with a linear dynamic absorber. The amplitude ratios of main vibrational system are derived from the equation of motion for the system, and optimal natural frequency ratio and damping ratio of dynamic absorber are obtained by computer simu- lation, which minimize the amplitude ratio of main vibrational system for the whole range of the frequency ratio. And, the effects of the parameters on the amplitude ratios are investigated. As the results, the effect of the natural frequency ratio on the amplitude ratio of main vibrational system is more important than that of the damping ratio of dynamic absorber as damping ratio of main vibrational system becomes larger. For the case of large damping ration of main vibrational system becomes larger. For the case of large damping ratio of main vibration system, the amplitude ratios are not decreased dramationally in spite of inoreasing mass ratio.
This paper presents unprecedented damped oscillation behaviours of a precast steel-concrete composite slab panel for track support. The steel-concrete composite slab track is an innovative slab track, a form of ballastless track which is becoming increasingly attractive to asset owners as they seek to reduce lifecycle costs and deal with increasing rail traffic speeds. The slender nature of the slab panel due to its reduced depth of construction makes it susceptible to vibration problems. The aim of the study is driven by the need to address the limited research available to date on the dynamic behaviour of steel-concrete composite slab panels for track support. Free vibration analysis of the track slab has been carried out using ABAQUS. Both undamped and damped eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes have been extracted using the Lancsoz method. The fundamental natural frequencies of the slab panel have been identified together with corresponding mode shapes. To investigate the sensitivity of the natural frequencies and mode shapes, parametric studies have been established, considering concrete strength and mass and steel's modulus of elasticity. This study is the world first to observe crossover phenomena that result in the inversion of the natural orders without interaction. It also reveals that replacement of the steel with aluminium or carbon fibre sheeting can only marginally reduce the natural frequencies of the slab panel.
