  • Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the main agricultural crops in Asian countries, including Korea, and is considered as the most important staple food in the world. Rice is also processed into flour, which is consumed through various foods such as cake, noodle, bread, and confectionary. Rice flour quality is highly dependent on variety and milling conditions. Producing rice flour with fine particles is more difficult than wheat flour because of its grain hardness. The Korean rice varieties representing different amylose contents were selected for this study. The relationship between the morphological and starch characteristics of rice kernels and the appropriate varieties for producing good-quality, dry-milled rice flour were examined. The hardness of the rice kernels was determined by measuring the pressure at the grain breakage point. The damaged starch content of the rice flour was determined using a Megazyme starch damage assay kit. The particle-size distribution of the rice flour was measured as the volume-base distribution using a laser-diffraction particle size analyzer. The mean particle-size distribution of the dry-milled flour obtained was between $65.3{\sim}105.1{\mu}m$ among the rice varieties. The opaque, non-glutinous, Seolgaeng rice demonstrated a narrow peak at the fine size, whereas the entire particle-distribution range for other varieties was wide. Seolgaeng exhibited significantly lower damaged starch content of dry-milled flour than the other varieties (p < 0.05). Seolgaeng showed lowest in energy consumption on rice flour production with 200 mesh particle size. Accordingly, it is possible to produce dry-milled rice flour which is similar to wheat flour that would considerably reduce milling costs.

  • The effectiveness of an innovative method for the earthquake-resistant rehabilitation of existing poorly detailed reinforced concrete (RC) structures is experimentally investigated herein. Eight column subassemblages were subjected to earthquake-type loading and their hysteretic behaviour was evaluated. Four of the specimens were identical and representative of columns found in RC structures designed in the 1950s-70s period for gravity load only. These original specimens were subjected to cyclic lateral deformations and developed brittle failure mechanisms. Three of the damaged specimens were subsequently retrofitted with innovative high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete (HSSFC) jackets. The main variables examined were the jacket width and the contribution of mesh steel reinforcement in the seismic performance of the enhanced columns. The influence of steel fiber volume fraction was also examined using test results of a previous work of Tsonos et al. (2017). The fourth earthquake damaged subassemblage was strengthened with a conventional RC jacket and was subjected to the same lateral displacement history as the other three retrofitted columns. The seismic behaviour of the subassemblages strengthened according to the proposed retrofit scheme was evaluated with respect to that of the original specimens and that of the column strengthened with the conventional RC jacket. Test results clearly demonstrated that the HSSFC jackets effectively prevented the development of shear failure mechanisms, while ensuring a ductile seismic response similar to that of the subassemblage retrofitted with the conventional RC jacket. Ultimately, an indisputable superiority in the overall seismic performance of the strengthened columns was achieved with respect to the original specimens.

  • The damage by the black-tipped sawfly, Acantholyda posticalis posticalis Matsumura, has been increasing at several locations in central part of the Korean peninsula. This study was undertaken at selected plots in Kapyung-gun, Kyunggi Province and Hongchon-gun, Kangwon Province from 1984 to 1987. The purpose of this study was to provide basic information for integrated control of this pest and to determine the economic threshold by investigating the pest host interactions with special reference to damage analysis. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The damage was more severe at upper part than at lower part of the crown. The vertical distribution of dry weight of damaged trees above ground showed L-type distribution, whereas that of healthy trees showed C-type distribution. 2. The needle loss by sawfly reduced both of height and the diameter growth of the main stem. The growth reduction occurs when the needle loss is 50% or higher. About 10% of tree growth was reduced at 50% of needle loss. 3. The reduction of diameter growth was more severe at upper part than at lower part of the main stem. 4. Volume growth was reduced when more than 50% of the needles were damaged after three years of the sawfly infestation. Reductions of total volume increment at the levels 70% and 90% of needle damage were 9% and 20%, respectively.

  • Since 2013, Korea has allocated significant budgets and manpower nationwide to prevent the spread of pine wilt disease and to reduce damage. As a result, the number of damaged trees decreased from 2.18 million in 2014 to 310,000 in 2021. However, the damage has increased again since then. Despite the overall decrease in the number of damaged trees, the scope of the damage continues to expand every year. Previous studies have develope In order to judge the control performance, a quantitative control performance analysis method to objectively evaluate control performance. This method takes into consideration two factors-quantity change and the change in the damage area, which is an area factor. This approach provides a more comprehensive assessment than the control guidelines that only suggest changes in damage grade based on the volume of damaged trees. The expansion of the damage range is also an important factor in analyzing control performance, but previous studies have not reflected this. Therefore, this study calculates the change in the distance of the pine wilt disease boundary area for Gyeongsangbuk-do, where changes in the damage range can easily be observed from year to year. The study then creates application criteria and coefficients and uses them to improves control performance index calculation formula. As a result, it was possible to calculate a quantitative analysis of the control performance, taking into account the changes in the damage range. When the improved formula was applied to 26 cities, counties, and districts in Gyeongsangbuk-do, it slightly decreased or increased compared to the existing calculation formula. This confirmed that the control performance index can change from a positive value (+), indicating increased damage, to a negative value (-), indicating reduced damage.

  • Transgenic rice cells using RAmy3D promoter can provide high productivity, and the production of recombinant protein is induced by sugar starvation. In this system, productivity was reduced during the scale-up processes. To ensure the influences of shear stress and oxygen transfer rate, working volume and mixing performances were investigated under various agitation speeds and working volumes. In addition, inoculation methods including suspended cells and filtered cells were compared. Working volumes and shaking speeds were 300, 450 mL and 80, 120 rpm, respectively. Hydrodynamic environment of each condition was measured numerically like mixing time and $k_La$. Good mixing performance and high shear stress were measured at high agitation speed and low volume. The highest level of hCTLA4Ig was 30.7 mg/L at 120 rpm, 300 mL. When conditioned medium was used for inoculation, increased cell growth was noticed during the day 0~4 and decreased slower than filtered cells. Compared with filtered cells, the maximum hCTLA4Ig level reached 37.8 mg/L at 120 rpm, 300 mL and lower protease activity level was observed. In conclusion mixing performance is critical factor for productivity and conditioned medium can have a positive effect on damaged cells caused by hydrodynamic shear stress.

  • In this study, the simulations and analyses of flood flow due to a river inundation in a coastal urban area are carried out using a two-dimensional finite volume model with well-balanced HLLC scheme. The target area is a coastal urban area around Gohyun river which is located at Geoje city in Kyungnam province and was extremely damaged due to the heavy rainfall during the period of the typhoon "Maemi" in September 2003. For the purpose of the verification of the numerical model applied in this study, the simulated results are compared and analyzed with the inundation traces. In addition, the flood flow in an urban area is simulated and analyzed according to the scenarios of inflow variation due to the increase and decrease of the intensity of the heavy rainfall, which.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of medial amygdala on the gastric acid secretion and plasma gastrin concentration in the rats with chronic gastric fistula. After the medial nucleus of amygdala was damaged bilaterally by radiofrequency a. c. through stereotaxically inserted electrodes, the gastric juice was collected in the basal and histamine-stimulated states for 1 hour. The gastric juice was also collected while the medial nucleus of amygdala was stimulated with biphasic square wave in the both states. After the collection of the gastric juice, blood samples were drawn from the abdominal aorta for the radioimmunoassay of plasma gastrin. The results were as follows: 1) The damage of the medial amygdala significantly decreased the gastric juice volume and the acid output in the histamine-stimulated state. 2) The electrical stimulation of the medial amygdala significantly increased the gastric juice volume and the acid output in the histamine-stimulated state, and the acid output in the basal state. 3) The damage of the medial amygdala significantly decreased the plasma gastrin concentration but the electrical stimulation of the medial amygdala did not affect the plasma gastrin concentration. It is therefore suggested that the medial amygdala has a facilitatory influence on the histamine-stimulated gastric acid secretion in rats, and the influence may not be attributed to gastrin release.
