Review on Design of Underground Mine Openings in Korea and Overseas (국내외 지하광산 갱도설계 현황에 대한 고찰)

  • Some leading countries in mining have a very quantitative guideline for underground mine opening design which is useful to minimize mine hazards such as rockfall and collapse. Those hazards sometimes can cause a huge damage on human life and property in the mines. Construction guidelines of underground mines in Korea consist of qualitative and general expressions although the workers' safety rules and guides are well provided. Recently, mining operations in Korea are going underground due to the environmental regulations and resource depletion at shallow depth, and therefore there is a growing demand on a specialized and systematic guideline for mine opening design securing the underground stability. In this paper, current status of mining industry, research trends, and mining guidelines in Korea and overseas have been reviewed to give an insight into developing a new Korean guideline for underground mine design.

The Real Scale Fire Tests for Vertical Fire Spread Study of External Finishing Material (외벽 마감재료의 수직화재 확산 연구를 위한 실물화재 실험)

  • To reduce human life and property damage at the fire in a building, it is most critical to control flame spread in the early stage. Fire spread prevention measure generally includes fire resistance performance securing of structure member in the arson zone and use limitation based on combustion performance of finishing material. The latter is most fundamental fire safety design to determine flame spread, but domestic combustion test determines combustion performance by specimen sized fire test method. Thus, there are many restrictions in the determination of combustion performance by composite material such as sandwich panel. Especially, outer finishing material uses a variety of composite material such as dry bit, aluminum composite panel, and metal panel compared to inner finishing material. Therefore, this study would determine vertical fire spread features by a full scaled fire experiment through the test method of ISO 13785-2, an international test standard.

A Study on Remote IoT operating time for Fire Detector of Smart Home (스마트 홈에서 연소에 따른 화재감지기 원격 IoT 작동 시간에 관한 연구)

  • In the smart home era, fire safety is very important for human life and facility safety. Casualties and property damage from the fire would be a huge national loss. In this paper, we propose to predict the risk by determining the operating time of the fire detector according to the fire in the smart home. Among IoT fire detectors, heat detectors and smoke detectors, the risk can be predicted due to the difference in the operating time depending on the fire. Based on the results of this experiment, the ion-type smoke detector shows very fast characteristics, so it would be good to use the results in future fire prevention facility.

  • Landslides occur in Korea every year because it has numerous mountainous regions and approximately two-thirds of the annual rainfall falls in Summer. Therefore, it is important to predict potential areas of landslides and minimize the damage in advance to protect property and human life. Therefore, in the present study, the potential danger areas were extracted from a digital map, digital forest map, digital forest site environmental map, and digital geologic map to estimate the landslide hazard. In addition, the assessment of landslide danger was analyzed by first and second estimations based on the criteria from the Korea Forest Research Institute using a GIS technique, which was finally judged by a field investigation.

  • Since concentration of greenhouse gas increases continuously from human's fossil fuel use, urbanization, and cultivation, it is trend that climate change is appearing. In Addition, in 20th century, occurrence of disaster is accidental and huge, and damage level also increases gradually. Therefore, in order to preserve the territory and to protect people's life and property against new type disasters, disaster detection satellite (payloads) development is required urgently. In this paper, we conduct a research and development for the prompt preemptive action when occurred a disaster, in particularly, about the disaster observation optimized at Korea's geographical features for the irregular future disasters. For the payload design which is specialized detect disasters, we create a tech tree of satellite imagery applications based 10 disaster types, and analyze the satellite sensor technologies referred to Landsat-8, Worldview-3 and ALOS-2.

  • With the recent rapid growth of the domestic and international unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market and the increasing importance of UAV operations in urban centers, such as UAMs, the safety management and regulatory framework for human life and property damage caused by UAV failures has been emphasized. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of risk-cost models that evaluate the risk of an operating area for safe UAM flight path planning, and identified the main limitations of each model to derive considerations for future model development. By providing a basic model for improving the safety of UAM operations, this study is expected to make an important contribution to technical improvements and policy decisions in the field of UAM flight path planning.

  • Among the various cases of fire accident, gas accident which is roost essential have a lot of forms and causes. The quantity consumed of gas is increasing because of increment of gas-using families and variations of gas machinery. The quantity consumed of gas in 2007 was 35078 tons and the average rate of increasement was 9.4%. The amount of gas accident was on the peak at 1995 when 557 accidents occurred in a year. In 2007, 123 gas accidents was occurred and the average rate of diminution was 11.5%. Accidents by LP gas took 80% of the whole accident and city gas and high pressure gas took 20%. In case of LP gas, accidents were usually occurred because of lack of blocking after the removal of gas machinery and moveable butane burner. Especially, the accidents cause by carelessness of a provider is increasing. Gas accidents which generate damage of human life and property, are caused by users' carelessness, providers' carelessness, inferiority of structure and old products. In this thesis, We will classify the gas accidents. Furthermore through the classification of accidents by forms, causes and regions, this thesis going to be a reference to understand and prevent the accidents.

Analysis and Evaluation of the Distributed Control Braking System of Long Freight Car Brakes (장대화물열차의 분산제어 제동 시 연결기에 발생하는 충격력 해석 및 분석)

  • In long freight trains, there is a brake time delay in neighboring freight cars, which causes damage and fractures in the couplers, especially at their knuckle. A problem in the couplers of the cars can cause derailment and damages of human life and property. In this study, maximum forces on the couplers are studied when a long freight car brakes with the brake delay time and coupler gap. We make a dynamic model of 50 freight cars and couplers, applying contact between the couplers and a characteristic curve to express the force and displacement of the buffers using SIMPACK, which is a multi-body dynamics program. We use EN 14531-2, which is a standard of freight car brakes, to verify the dynamic model. Then, we compare the analyzed impact force with the coupler knuckle standard after applying the two carriages of a locomotive in the model based on the dispersed double head control system. The result shows that all coupler gap conditions satisfy the infinite lifetime of the material when the brake delay time is 0.1 second.

  • Despite the recent economic difficulties, the on-line market is overtaking the off-line market. Since US Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos mentioned that a delivery service using drones is possible, it has been creating new perspectives and values that have never been seen before. Drones are being used in various fields. Among them, the delivery service using drones will be the future growth engine of Korea in cooperation with the 4th industrial revolution. However, as drones are put into practical use, problems such as human life and property damage and personal information protection due to public collisions or falls are expected. The practical use of future drones is inevitable, not optional. As a method for commercialization of drones, first, securing safety through drone use and securing a national certification system, which is the minimum standard system for drone safety, and second, securing various infrastructures by activating drone use, and third, aviation regulations and personal information protection, etc. It needs to be supplemented in terms of laws and regulations.

A Real Time Flame and Smoke Detection Algorithm Based on Conditional Test in YCbCr Color Model and Adaptive Differential Image (YCbCr 컬러 모델에서의 조건 검사와 적응적 차영상을 이용한 화염 및 연기 검출 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we propose a new real-time algorithm detecting the flame and smoke in digital CCTV images. Because the forest fire causes the enormous human life and damage of property, the early management according to the early sensing is very important. The proposed algorithm for monitoring forest fire is classified into the flame sensing and detection of smoke. The flame sensing algorithm detects a flame through the conditional test at YCbCr color model from the single frame. For the detection of smoke, firstly the background range is set by using differences between current picture and the average picture among the adjacent frames in the weighted value, and the pixels which get out of this range and have a gray-scale are detected in the smoke area. Because the proposed flame sensing algorithm is stronger than the existing algorithms in the change of the illuminance according to the quantity of sunshine, and the smoke detection algorithm senses the pixel of a gray-scale with the smoke considering the amount of change for unit time, the effective early forest fire detection is possible. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm provides better performance than existing algorithms.
