  • The study was carried out to examine effect of cadmium spraying on mulberry leaves on the growth and metabolism of mulberry tree. The results obtained were as follow:1. Brown spot were appeared on the leaves as the symptoms of damage and the damage was remarkable with higher concentration of cadmium.2. Higher concentration of Cd inhibited the length and diameter of mulberry branches with a significant difference (P<0.05) for the length. The growth of branch length in both 5 and 7 ppm treatment of Cd was inhibited by 31% compared with the control. 3. Cadimum concentration of mulberry barks was noticeably lower than that of leaves. 4. Cadimum concentration over 3ppm inhibited significantly chlorophyll content, activitsies of respiration, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transase (GPT) and adenocine triphosphate (APT). 5. The lowest concentration of cadmium was identified to be 3ppm to incur the inhibitory effect on the growth and metabolism of mulberry and cadmium content of mulberry leaves at the concentration was 13.86ppm.

  • The Main Hall of the Fengguo monastery in Yixian county, Liaoning province, China, is the best preserved and largest wooden Buddhist structure, typical of the Liao dynasty style, in China. However, some degradation to the timber frame of the Main Hall has been noted, and this is causing concern in terms of the long-term preservation of the structure. In this study, wooden pillars showing the degradation phenomena of whitening, for areas in contact with the stone floor, and extensive surface damage at higher locations(mostly above 1 m) have been examined. Samples taken from wooden pillar surfaces were analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), ion chromatography, and pH measurements. With respect to the whitening phenomenon, we found inorganic calcium precipitates and oxalate ions, along with higher pH values. These symptoms indicated that chemical changes were taking place in response to alkaline conditions, suggesting that alkaline mixtures with calcium content in the foundations may be responsible. Regarding the upper surface-damaged areas, no valid evidence for chemical degradation was found using FTIR analysis, while damaged areas exhibited the presence of more bat guano-related materials than which were apparent in undamaged areas. The occurrence of this surface-damaged phenomenon has therefore been attributed to physical damage caused by bat activity over long periods of time.

  • The headache has various causes and symptoms in clinic. Therefore The headache and the stiff neck also can found in many articles of Shanghanlun(傷寒論) On Cold Damage. In the past, many doctors classified the headache and the stiff neck according to their own theories, and published some Shanghan books(傷寒書). In this study, I select ten Shanghan books which classified the headache and the stiff neck in table of contents, and compared with the articles of and , the first books of Shanghanlun(傷寒論) to found meanings of them. As a result, the Osuyutang(吳茱萸湯) was the most quoted herb medicine of . The second was Jowisunggitang(調胃承氣湯) and Sosunggitang(小承氣湯), the group of Sunggitang(承氣湯類). Mahwangtang(麻黃湯) and Gyejitang(桂枝湯) are substituted as Ganghwalchunghwatang(羌活沖和湯) in for simply prescribe medicine, or even not mentioned as in . This can be understand as a result of copy the previous generation doctor's writings, not as a study of and . The articles of the headache in was not quoted in that ten books. But the stiff neck was frequently quoted that Gyejigualutang(桂枝加括蔞湯), Dehamhyungtanghwan(大陷胸湯丸) articles includes chibyong(痓病) The Opisthotonos, gyongbyong(痙病) The Convulsions, Yuchi(柔痓) Opisthotonos With Sweat And Fever.

  • Purpose: In the orbital floor fracture, sensory impairment due to the damage of the infraorbital nerve is one of the most common symptom and complication. In this report, we have the assumption that tailoring of $medpor^{(R)}$ for decompression may have correlations to the damage and regeneration of the nerve. Methods: Among patients who had open reduction for pure orbital floor fracture in our hospital from March 2005 to March 2008, we selected 80 cases. In 40 cases, we inserted tailored $medpor^{(R)}$, and in other 40 cases, non-tailored $medpor^{(R)}$ was inserted. Patient's reports were obtained and analyzed, and the pin-prick test and the 2-point discrimination test on the infraorbital nerve regions were done for testing the sensory impairments. Results: The results show that the patients who adopted sculpture of $medpor^{(R)}$ showed higher tendency of recovery of sensory impairments in the patient's subjective report, static touch sensation, static two point discrimination using. And in postoperative 3 months, there are statistically significant recovery of sensory symptoms, signs and the result of sensory tests. Conclusion: From these results, tailored $medpor^{(R)}$ in reconstruction of orbital wall fracture may improve recovery of sensory impairments for decreasing of compression of infraorbital nerve.

  • The normal intracranial structures are relatively resistant to therapeutic radiation, but may react adversely in a variety of ways, and the damage to nerve tissue may be slow in making its appearance, and once damage has occured the patient recovers slowly and incompletly. Therefore, it is important to consider the possibility of either recurrent tumor or late adverse effect in any patient who has had radiotherapy. The determination o( rnorphological/pathological correlation is very important to the therapeutic radiologist who uses CT scans to define a treatment volume, as well as to the clinician who wishes to explain the patient's clinical state in terms of regress, progression, persistence, or recurrence of tumor or radiation-induced edema or necrosis, The authors are obtained as following results ; 1. The field size(whole CNS, large, intermediate, small field) was variable according to the location and extension of tumor and histopathologic diagnosis, and the tatal tumor dose was 4,000 to 6,000 rads except one of recurred case of 9,100 rads. The duration of follow up CT scan was from 3 months to 5 year 10 months. 2, The histopathologic diagnosis of 9cases were glioblastoma multiforme(3 cases), pineal tumor (3), oligodendroglioma (1), cystic astrocytoma (1), pituitary adenoma (1) and their adverse effects after radiation therapy were brain atrophy (4 cases) , radiation necrosis(2), tumor recurrence with or without calcification (2), radiation·induced infarction (1). 3. The recurrent symptoms after radiation therapy of brain tumor were not always the results of regrowth of neoplasm, but may represent late change of irradiated brain. 4. It must be need that we always consider the accurate treatment planning and proper treatment method to reduce undesirable late adverse effects in treatment of brain tumors.

  • Purpose: Isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy is a rare manifestation of various underlying disease. This article presents a rare complication of general anesthesia associated with an surgical procedure on a case of zygomatic fracture. Methods: An 18-year-old female patient was referred to our department by painful swelling on her left zygomatic area after the traffic accident. Left zygomatic complex fracture was identified on the simple x-ray and facial bone CT scan, and the fracture was treated with open reduction and internal fixation under general anesthesia. On the first postoperative day, she complained of difficulty in swallowing solid food, dysarthria and deviated tongue to her right side. There was no abnormal findings on the neurological examination, brain MRI and routine chemistry. She was diagnosed with transient hypoglossal nerve palsy and dexamethasone with multi-vitamins was administrated intravenously for 5 days. Results: The symptoms were completely resolved by the ninth postoperative day and the patient was discharged without any other complications. Conclusion: The hypoglossal(cranial nerve XII)nerve supplies motor innervation to all of the ipsilateral extrinsic and intrinsic tongue muscles. The hypoglossal nerve damage may caused by the compression between the airway and the hyoid bone during the endotracheal intubation, and direct trauma due to excessive pressure or neck extension. We described a rare case of unintended injury to hypoglossal nerve and care must be taken not to cause the hypoglossal nerve damage especially in facial plastic surgery with excessive neck extension under general anesthesia.

  • The blueberry gall midge, Dasineura oxycoccana (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), has known as a key pest of blueberries in the southeastern United States, Europe and Canada. It can cause considerable damage to developing flower buds and also injure vegetative growth by distorting and blackening shoot tips on blueberries. In 2010, same damage symptoms were observed on blueberries, Vaccinium spp., in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. And, D. oxycoccana was identified from the farms and it was designated as a quarantine pest in Korea. The occurrences of D. oxycoccana and its damages were investigated in the blueberry greenhouse in 2011. Nationwide survey revealed that most of the blueberry greenhouses were infected by D. oxycoccana. An environment-friendly management method for D. oxycoccana was developed by changing soil environment in the blueberry greenhouse.

  • Ginsenosides are among the most well-known traditional herbal medicines frequently used for the treatment of various symptoms in South Korea. The neuroprotective effects of ginsenoside $Rg_3$ (G-$Rg_3$) on cholesterol-oxide-(CO)-induced neurotoxicity were investigated through the analyses of rat brains. The recently accumulated reports show that ginseng saponins (GTS), the major active ingredients of Panax ginseng, have protective effects against neurotoxin insults. In the present study, the neuroprotective effects of G-$Rg_3$ on CO-induced hippocampal excitotoxicity were examined in vivo. The in-vitro studies using rat cultured hippocampal neurons revealed that G-$Rg_3$ treatment significantly inhibited CO-induced hippocampal cell death. G-$Rg_3$ treatment not only significantly reduced CO-induced DNA damage but also attenuated CO-induced apoptosis. The in-vivo studies that were conducted revealed that the intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) pre-administration of G-$Rg_3$ significantly reduced i.c.v. CO-induced hippocampal damage in rats. To examine the mechanisms underlying the in-vitro and in-vivo neuroprotective effects of G-$Rg_3$ against CO-induced hippocampal excitotoxicity, the effect of G-$Rg_3$ on the CO-induced elevations of the apoptotic cells in cultured hippocampal cells was examined, and it was found that G-$Rg_3$ treatment inhibited CO-induced apoptosis. The histopathological evaluation demonstrated that G-$Rg_3$ significantly diminished the apoptosis in the hippocampus and also spared the hippocampal CA1, CA3, and dentate gyrus neurons. G-$Rg_3$ also significantly improved the CO-caused behavioral impairment. G-$Rg_3$ itself had no effect, however, on the CO-induced inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase activity (data not shown). These results collectively indicate the G-$Rg_3$-induced neuroprotection against CO in rat hippocampus. With regard to the wide use of G-$Rg_3$, this agent is potentially beneficial in treating CO-induced brain injury.

  • Parkinson's disease is known to exhibit progressive degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra via inhibition of glutathione metabolism. It is well known that 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) induces Parkinson's disease-like symptoms, while resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In the present study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in grapes and various plants, on 6-OHDA-induced cell damage to the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line. Resveratrol (5 and 10 ${\mu}M$) inhibited 6-OHDA (60 ${\mu}M$)-induced cytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells and induced a reduction of the number of apoptotic nuclei caused by 6-OHDA treatment. Additionally, the total apoptotic rate of cells treated with both resveratrol (10 ${\mu}M$) and 6-OHDA (60 ${\mu}M$) was less than that of 6-OHDA treated cells. Resveratrol also dose-dependently (1, 5 and 10 ${\mu}M$) scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by 6-OHDA in SH-SY5Y cells and prevented depletion of glutathione in response to the 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity in the glutathione assay. Overall, these results indicate that resveratrol exerts a neuroprotective effect against 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity of SH-SY5Y cells by scavenging ROS and preserving glutathione.
