Following a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), prestressing concrete containment vessels (PCCVs) may experience high thermal load as well as internal pressure. The high temperature stress would increase the risk of premature damage to the containment, which reduces the safety margin during the increasing internal pressure. However, current investigations cannot clearly address the issues of thermal-pressure coupling effect on damage propagation and thus safety of the containment. Thus, this paper offers three simple and powerful damage parameters to differentiate the severity of damage of the containment. Moreover, despite of the temperature action severely threatening the pressure performance of the containment, the research regarding the improvement of the resistant performance of the containment is quite scarce. Therefore, in this paper, a comprehensive comparison of damage propagation and mechanism between conventional and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) containments is performed. The effects of fiber characteristics parameters on damage propagation of structures following the LOCA are also specifically revealed. It is found that the proposed damage indices can properly indicate state of damage in the containment body and the addition of fiber can be used to obviously mitigate the damage propagation in PCCV considering the thermal-pressure coupling.

The target performance of a current seismic design code is to achieve collapse-prevention in order to minimize casualties. Existing structures are also being retrofitted to meet this target performance. This seismic performance seems to have been achieved in recent great overseas earthquakes, but the accompanying enormous economic loss is pointed out as a new problem. A new seismic design concept over the current target performance is required to reduce economic loss, in which a target performance is determined by the damage probability in order to control the damage levels of structures. In this study, the seismic behavior of bridges having different characteristics was investigated by nonlinear seismic analyses, and fragility curves with respect to a reference damage level were derived. Based on these results, the characteristics of target ductilities satisfying a target damage probability were investigated.
Post-Harvest processing engineering is a field that studies prevention of the quality change of agricultural products during sorting, packaging, storage, and distribution after harvested. In distribution steps, agricultural products could be damaged by physical force, it is the main reason of low quality and they lost value of commodities. This study was performed to find the vibration characteristics of the peach, and to find the extent of the damage on the peach by fatigue stress. The vibration data was obtained on expressway and the vibration characteristics of peach was used to find the damage on the peach. To analyze the vibration characteristics of peach, the resonance frequency and vibration transmissibility were measured. The resonance frequency of the peach was 167.98 Hz and the transmissibility was 4.06 at resonance point. It was 150 ~ 250 Hz that the transmissibility was more than 1. And the transmissibility in simulated test was measured. When the trasmissibility was more than 1, the range was 15 ~ 65 Hz, and when it was less than 1, the range was 65 ~ 175 Hz. When the transmissibility was about 1, the range was 5 ~ 15 Hz. The damage and the vibration cycle numbers of peaches were compared with input frequency and acceleration. More damage and less cycle number happened in 30 Hz than in 62.5 Hz. The reason was that the transmissibility of 30 Hz was higher and the vibration displacement in lower frequency was more. The more acceleration and cycle number increased, the more the bruising volume of peaches increased. The bruising volume ratio for vibration fatigue was measured according to input acceleration and cycle number. Using measured data, regression models for bruising volume ratio(BVR) was developed as a function of the acceleration(A) and cycle number(CN) as follows. BVR = a * $A^b*$$(CN)^c$
Because of its physical characteristics, earthquake has a great impact on a wide area in a short time, so it needs a resilience based seismic countermeasures to restore the community function. For this reason, in this study, the seismic damages of urban buildings were assessed stochastically by virtual earthquakes using public data information and disaster management program(Ergo-EQ). A geographical map reflecting geological characteristics of the target area was created with the buildings and topographic data in Dalseo-gu, Daegu City. In addition, an integrated database including building characteristics was modified to be linked with the Ergo-EQ program. The seismic damages for the buildings were evaluated through the exceedance probability of four different damage levels. From the damage results, it can be identified not only the seismic damage of each building, but also the major factors affecting earthquake damage.
In recent years, the frequency and scale of the natural disasters are growing rapidly due to the global climate change. In case of the urban flooding, high-density of population and infrastructure has caused the more intensive damages. In this study, we analyzed the spatial characteristics of urban flooding damage factors using GWR(Geographically Weighted Regression) for effective disaster prevention and then, classified the causes of the flood damage by spatial characteristics. The damage factors applied consists of natural variables such as the poor drainage area, the distance from the river, elevation and slope, and anthropogenic variables such as the impervious surface area, urbanized area, and infrastructure area, which are selected by literature review. This study carried out the comparative analysis between OLS(Ordinary Least Square) and GWR model for identifying spatial non-stationarity and spatial autocorrelation, and in the results, GWR model has higher explanation power than OLS model. As a result, it appears that there are some differences between each of the flood damage areas depending on the variables. We conclude that the establishment of disaster prevention plan for urban flooding area should reflect the spatial characteristics of the damaged areas. This study provides an improved understandings of the causes of urban flood damages, which can be diverse according to their own spatial characteristics.

This study is performed to consider the threshold values of heavy rain warning in Korea using 98 surface meteorological station data and 590 Automatic Weather System stations (AWSs), damage data of National Emergency Management Agency for the period of 2005 to 2009. It is in need to arrange new criteria for heavy rain considering concept of rainfall intensity and rainfall damage to reflect the changed characteristics of rainfall according to the climate change. Rainfall values from the most frequent rainfall damage are at 30 mm/1 hr, 60 mm/3 hr, 70 mm/6 hr, and 110 mm/12 hr, respectively. The cumulative probability of damage occurrences of one in two due to heavy rain shows up at 20 mm/1 hr, 50 mm/3 hr, 80 mm/6 hr, and 110 mm/12 hr, respectively. When the relationship between threshold values of heavy rain warning and the possibility of rainfall damage is investigated, rainfall values for high connectivity between heavy rain warning criteria and the possibility of rainfall damage appear at 30 mm/1 hr, 50 mm/3 hr, 80 mm/6 hr, and 100 m/12 hr, respectively. It is proper to adopt the daily maximum precipitation intensity of 6 and 12 hours, because 6 hours rainfall might be include the concept of rainfall intensity for very-short-term and short-term unexpectedly happened rainfall and 12 hours rainfall could maintain the connectivity of the previous heavy rain warning system and represent long-term continuously happened rainfall. The optimum combinations of criteria for heavy rain warning of 6 and 12 hours are 80 mm/6 hr or 100 mm/12 hr, and 70 mm/6 hr or 110 mm/12 hr.
A tree-length harvesting system using the HAM300, which is mounted on a farm tractor prototype machine, have been recently introduced in South Korea for thinning old (>30 years) forests. However, no research has previously been conducted on the characteristics of residual stand damage associated with cable yarding systems on thinning treatment stands in South Korea. Therefore, there were assessed on the degree and quantity of residual stand damage caused by felling and yarding process to broaden the knowledge of residual stand damage on semi-mechanized skyline thinning operations. This study investigated scar size, direction, area, shape type and their distribution on the residual stand damage caused by felling and yarding operations. Damage to residual trees was generated for 7.4% and 6.9% of residual trees in felling and yarding operations, respectively. Damaged direction of scars was located in front-side (38.9%) and up-side (34.7%) for felling operations while the highest scar damage was found on down-side (44.6%) for yarding operations. Scar heights of felling damage were higher than those of yarding damage. In yarding operation, the most of the scars was located within l0m from the center of the skyline corridor. These results should be useful information for forest managers and landowners to reduce residual stand damages and retain valuable timber volume from thinning treatments.

Ductility based design of reinforced concrete structures implicitly assumes certain damage under the action of a design basis earthquake. The damage undergone by a structure needs to be quantified, so as to assess the post-seismic reparability and functionality of the structure. The paper presents an analytical method of quantification and location of seismic damage, through system identification methods. It may be noted that soft ground storied buildings are the major casualties in any earthquake and hence the example structure is a soft or weak first storied one, whose seismic response and temporal variation of damage are computed using a non-linear dynamic analysis program (IDARC) and compared with a normal structure. Time period based damage identification model is used and suitably calibrated with classic damage models. Regenerated stiffness of the three degrees of freedom model (for the three storied frame) is used to locate the damage, both on-line as well as after the seismic event. Multi resolution analysis using wavelets is also used for localized damage identification for soft storey columns.

Climate change is intensifying storms and floods around the world. Where nature has been destroyed by development, communities are at risk from these intensified climate patterns. This study was to suggest a methodology for estimating flood vulnerability using Potential Flood Damage(PFD) concept and classify city/county about Potential Flood Damage(PFD) using various typology techniques. To evaluate the PFD at a spatial resolutions of city/county units, the 20 representative evaluation indexing factors were carefully selected for the three categories such as damage target(FDT), damage potential(FDP) and prevention ability(FPA). The three flood vulnerability indices of FDT, FDP and FPA were applied for the 167 cities and counties in Korea for the pattern classification of potential flood damage. Potential Flood Damage(PFD) was classified by using grouping analysis, decision tree analysis, and cluster analysis, and characteristics of each type were analyzed. It is expected that the suggested PFD can be utilized as the useful flood vulnerability index for more rational and practical risk management plans against flood damage.

To study the seismic damage of masonry structures and understand the characteristics of the multi-intensity region, according to the Dujiang weir urbanization of China Wenchuan earthquake, the deterioration of 3991 masonry structures was summarized and statistically analysed. First, the seismic damage of multistory masonry structures in this area was investigated. The primary seismic damage of components was as follows: Damage of walls, openings, joints of longitudinal and transverse walls, windows (lower) walls, and tie columns. Many masonry structures with seismic designs were basically intact. Second, according to the main factors of construction, seismic intensity code levels survey, and influence on the seismic capacity, a vulnerability matrix calculation model was proposed to establish a vulnerability prediction matrix, and a comparative analysis was made based on the empirical seismic damage investigation matrix. The vulnerability prediction matrix was established using the proposed vulnerability matrix calculation model. The fitting relationship between the vulnerability prediction matrix and the actual seismic damage investigation matrix was compared and analysed. The relationship curves of the mean damage index for macrointensity and ground motion parameters were drawn through calculation and analysis, respectively. The numerical analysis was performed based on actual ground motion observation records, and fitting models of PGA, PGV, and MSDI were proposed.
