  • This is a method to determine the boundary line of reservoir flooding area which will be purchased. Until now, flood water level was used as the boundary line. By lowering this line from flood water level, purchasing cost of reservoir flooding area can be cut down. Sometimes, temporary flooding of arable land outside the boundary occurs. During the life of reservoir, flood damage to crop product on of this land must be indemified with net berefit from arable land between the bovndary line and normal water level. Following is the basic formula to determine the line. (Estimated flood damage to crop production of land outside the boundary line $\leqq$ Estimated net beneift from land between the boundary line and normal water level.) Minimum difference between both sides is needed to minimize the purchasing area. Flood damage and net benefit are estimated by hydrologic estimation with rainfall data and crop production estimation.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide appropriate methodology to ensure the safety and integrity of the production riser in offshore structure. In order to select integrity estimation methodology for production riser, level I and II Non-destructive Damage Evaluation (NDE) methods that were applied to existing structures are classified and reviewed. Numerical analysis is performed to verify the applicability and capability on damage detection of reviewed methods. As a result, the damage detection methodology using modal strain energy is more sensitive in detection of the damage than other methods. In practice, the number of sensors is limited due to the environmental and financial conditions. The impact on damage detection performance by reducing the number of sensors is systematically investigated through a series of numerical analyses and the results are discussed. The optimal number of sensor for the integrity estimation of production riser is recommended.

  • The natural disasters such as typhoon, earthquake, flood, heavy rain, drought, sweltering heat, wind wave, tsunami and so on, are difficult to estimate the scale of damage and spot. Also, these disasters were being damaged to human life. However, if based on the disaster statistics the past damage cases are analyzed and the estimated damages can be calculated, the initial damage action can be taken immediately and based on the estimated damage scale the damage can be mitigated. In the present study, therefore, we proposed the functions of wind wave damage estimation for the southern coast. The functions are developed based on Disaster Report('91~'14) for wind wave and typhoon disaster statistics, regional characteristics and observed sea weather.

  • This paper presents an efficient algorithm for the estimation of damage location and severity in bridge structures using Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN). Generally, the Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN)-based damage detection methods need a lot of training patterns for neural network learning process and the optimum architecture of a BPNN is selected by trial and error. In this paper, the PNN instead of the conventional BPNN is used as a pattern classifier. The modal properties of damaged structure are somewhat different from those of undamaged one. The basic idea of proposed algorithm is that the PNN classifies a test pattern which consists of the modal characteristics from damaged structure, how close it is to each training pattern which is composed of the modal characteristics from various structural damage cases. In this algorithm, two PNNs are sequentially used. The first PNN estimates the damage location using mode shape and the results of the first PNN are put into the second PNN for the damage severity estimation using natural frequency. The proposed damage assessment algorithm using the PNN is applied to a cable-stayed bridge to verify its applicability.

  • One of the most widely used methods to estimate core damage during a nuclear power plant accident is containment radiation measurement. The evolution of severe accidents is extremely complex, leading to uncertainty in the containment dose rate (CDR). Therefore, it is difficult to accurately determine core damage. This study proposes to conduct uncertainty analysis of CDR for core damage assessment. First, based on source term estimation, the Monte Carlo (MC) and point-kernel integration methods were used to estimate the probability density function of the CDR under different extents of core damage in accident scenarios with late containment failure. Second, the results were verified by comparing the results of both methods. The point-kernel integration method results were more dispersed than the MC results, and the MC method was used for both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Quantitative analysis indicated a linear relationship, rather than the expected proportional relationship, between the CDR and core damage fraction. The CDR distribution obeyed a logarithmic normal distribution in accidents with a small break in containment, but not in accidents with a large break in containment. A possible application of our analysis is a real-time core damage estimation program based on the CDR.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose applicability of spatial data and quality check criteria for estimating damage from storm and flood. Using the data from the National Disaster Management System and National Spatial Data Infrastructure, spatial database for estimation of storm and flood damage has been mapped to each type of damage. This was proposed as the quality check criteria for damage analysis. Through this study, it is possible to utilize the spatial database for estimating storm and flood damage. The reliability of analysis results are ensured through the quality check criteria.

  • An experimental study was conducted on baseline model updating and damage estimation techniques for the health monitoring of offshore wind turbine tripod substructures. First, a procedure for substructure health monitoring was proposed. An initial baseline model for a scaled model of a tripod substructure was established. A baseline model was updated based on the natural frequencies and the mode shapes measured in the healthy state. A training pattern was then generated using the updated baseline model, and the damage was estimated by inputting the modal parameters measured in the damaged state into the trained neural network. The baseline model could be updated reasonably using the effective fixity model. The damage tests were performed, and the damage locations could be estimated reasonably. In addition, the estimated damage severity also increased as the actual damage severity increased. On the other hand, when the damage severity was relatively small, the corresponding damage location was detected, but it was more difficult to identify than the other cases. Further studies on small damage estimation and stiffness reduction quantification will be needed before the presented method can be used effectively for the health monitoring of tripod substructures.

  • Drought has different characteristics from other disasters. Say, drought effect can be prolonged according to drought duration and so the estimation of drought damage can be difficult. Therefore this study suggested and applied the proper drought damage estimation method developed based on previous methods. The suggested method was used for the drought damage estimations considering agricultural aspect and domestic water use which the data are available. We estimated drought damages on Gimhae-si, Namhae-gun, Uiryeong-gun, Changnyeong-gun, and Changwon-si in Gyungsang Nam-do from 2006 to 2008. As a result, in agricultural aspect, the damage on rice was about 195million won in Uiryeong-gun and on rice was about 67million won in Changnyeong-gun. In domestic water use, the damage was about 21billion won on 4 towns of Namhae-gun when we assumed the expense for sufferance is 400,000 won. We may need develope the method in the direction of the best use of present data for the improvement of the suggested method in agricultural aspect. In the case of the estimation of drought damage about domestic water use, we could suggest more realistic method if we consider the weights for the expense for sufferance and water use.

  • Abnormal weather conditions have lately been occurring frequently due to the rapid economic development and global warming. Natural disasters classified as storm and flood damages such as heavy rain, typhoon, strong wind, high seas and heavy snow arouse large-scale human and material damages. To minimize damages, it is important to estimate the scale of damage before disasters occur. This study is intended to develop a strong wind damage estimation function to prepare for strong wind damage among various storm and flood disasters. The developed function reflects weather factors and regional characteristics based on the strong wind damage history found in the Natural Disaster Yearbook. When the function is applied to a system that collects real-time weather information, it can estimate the scale of damage in a short time. In addition, this function can be used as the grounds for disaster control policies of the national and local governments to minimize damages from strong wind.

  • This study is to investigate a damage estimation of single edge notched tensile specimens as a function of acoustic emission(AE) according to the uni-directionally oriented carbon fiber/epoxy composites, CFRP In fiber reinforced composite materials, AE signals due to several types of failure mechanisms are typically observed. These are due to fiber breakage, fiber pull-out matrix cracking, delamination, and splitting or fiber bundle breaking. And these are usually discriminated on the basis of amplitude distribution, event counts, and energy related parameters. In this case, AE signals were analyzed and classified 3 regions by AE event counts, energy and amplitude for corresponding applied load. Bath-tub curve shows 3 distinct periods during the lifetime of a single-edge-notch(SEN) specimen. The characterization of AE generated from CFRP during SEN tensile test is becoming an useful tool f3r the prediction of damage failure or/and failure mode analysis.
