An active damage detection technique is introduced to locate damage in an isotropic plate using Lamb waves. This technique uses a time-domain energy model of Lamb waves in plates that the wave amplitude inversely decays with the propagation distance along a ray direction. Accordingly the damage localization is formulated as a least-squares problem to minimize an error function between the model and the measured data. An active sensing system with integrated actuators/sensors is controlled to excite/receive $A_0$ mode of Lamb waves in the plate. Scattered wave signals from the damage can be obtained by subtracting the baseline signal of the undamaged plate from the recorded signal of the damaged plate. In the experimental study, after collecting the scattered wave signals, a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is employed to extract the first scattered wave pack from the damage, then an iterative method is derived to solve the least-squares problem for locating the damage. Since this method does not rely on time-of-flight but wave energy measurement, it is more robust, reliable, and noise-tolerant. Both numerical and experimental examples are performed to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the method, and the results demonstrate that the estimated damage position stably converges to the targeted damage.
This paper is estimation of structure damage caused by Explosion in LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) filling station. As we estimate the influence of damage which occur at gas storage tank in filling station. We can utilize the elementary data of safety distance. In this study, the influence of over-pressure caused by VCE(Vapor Cloud Explosion) in filling station was calculated by using the Hopkinson's scaling law and the accident damage was estimated by applying the influence on the adjacent structure into the probit model. As a result of the damage estimation conducted by using the probit model, both the damage possibility of explosion overpressure to structures of max 265 meters away and to glass bursting of 1150 meters away was nearly zero in open space explosion.
In this study, the Ar plasma treatment was used to improve the surface roughness of Poly-Si1-xGex thin film deposited by RTCVD. The surface roughness and the resistivity of Si1-xGex thin film were investigated with variation of Ar plasma treatment parameters (electrode distance, working pressure, time, substrate temperature and R.F power). When the Ar plasma treatment was used, the cluster size decreased by the surface etching effect due to the increasing surface collision energy of particles (ion, neutral atom) in plasma under the conditions of decreasing electrode distance and increasing pressure, time, temperature, and R. F power. Although the surface roughness value decreased by the reduction of the cluster size due to surface etching effect, however, the resistivity increased. This may be due to the surface damage caused by the increasing surface collision energy. It was concluded that the surface roughness could be improved by the Ar plasma treatment, while the resistivity was increased by the surface damage on the substrate.
Hydrochloric acid is a highly corrosive toxic substance and requires proper safety to minimize damage in case of leakage. Among the various risk-reduction facilities, the dike is a typical safety facility installed to protect the surrounding buildings and facilities by preventing the external spread of hazardous materials from the storage tank. In this study, the KORA program was used to assume leakage accident of hydrochloric acid storage tank. At this time, the extent of the damage effects of ERPG-2 were assessed for each of the three separation distance between the storage tank and the dike. The study found that the smaller the separation distance between the dike and the storage tank, the smaller the extent of damage caused by hydrochloric acid leakage, and the greater the impact of indoor conditions under the same conditions. Through this process, we are going to assist in selecting locations and installing facilities for new and existing businesses.
In the case of casting materials or ductile materials for marine equipment, it is common to employ a surface modification for achieving cost reduction and improvement in strength. In particular, aluminium bronze ALBC3 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, and thus widely used for marine application. However, application of the material under high-velocity seawater flow may induce electrochemical corrosion damage and physical damage such as cavitation erosion, leading to shorter service life of equipment. In this study, surface modification was carried out on ALBC3 alloy for different shot peening stand-off distances, and the physical hardness and electrochemical characteristics before and after modification were investigated. The results in each case showed the hardness increase in comparison with non-peened specimen, and the maximum hardness improvement(50 %) was found in 10 cm of shot-peening stand-off distance. It is observed that the electrochemical characteristics were irrelevant to application of shot peening.
There is greater significance in identifying the incipient damages in structures at the time of their initiation as timely rectification of these minor incipient cracks can save huge maintenance cost. However, the change in the global dynamic characteristics of a structure due to these subtle damages are insignificant enough to detect using the majority of the current damage diagnostic techniques. Keeping this in view, we propose a hybrid damage diagnostic technique for detection of minor incipient damages in the structures. In the proposed automated hybrid algorithm, the raw dynamic signatures obtained from the structure are decomposed to uni-modal signals and the dynamic signature are reconstructed by identifying and combining only the uni-modal signals altered by the minor incipient damage. We use these reconstructed signals for damage diagnostics using ARMAX model. Numerical simulation studies are carried out to investigate and evaluate the proposed hybrid damage diagnostic algorithm and their capability in identifying minor/incipient damage with noisy measurements. Finally, experimental studies on a beam are also presented to compliment the numerical simulations in order to demonstrate the practical application of the proposed algorithm.
Based on the reconnaissance of buildings in Dujiangyan City during 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, China, structural damage characteristics and the spatial distribution of structural damage are investigated, and the possible reasons for the extraordinary features are discussed with consideration of the influence of urban historical evolution and spatial variation of earthquake motions. Firstly, the urban plan and typical characteristics of structural seismic damage are briefly presented and summarized. Spatial distribution of structural damage is then comparatively analyzed by classifying all surveyed buildings in accordance with different construction age, considering the influence of seismic design code on urban buildings. Finally, the influences of evolution of seismic design code, topographic condition, local site and distance from fault rupture on spatial distribution of structural damage are comprehensively discussed. It is concluded that spatial variation of earthquake motions, resulting from topography, local site effect and fault rupture, are very important factor leading to the extraordinary spatial distribution of building damage except the evolution of seismic design codes. It is necessary that the spatial distribution of earthquake motions should be considered in seismic design of structures located in complicated topography area and near active faults.
Dynamic compaction (DC) is a useful method for improvement of granular soils. The method is based on falling a tamper (weighting 5 to 40 ton) from the height of 15 to 30 meters on loose soil that results in stress distribution, vibration of soil particles and desirable compaction of the soil. Propagation of the waves during tamping affects adjacent structures and causes structural damage or loss of performance. Therefore, determination of the safe or critical distance from tamping point to prevent structural hazards is necessary. According to FHWA, the critical distance is defined as the limit of a particle velocity of 76 mm/s. In present study, the ABAQUS software was used for numerical modeling of DC process and determination of the safe distance based on particle velocity criterion. Different variables like alluvium depth, relative density, and impact energy were considered in finite element modeling. It was concluded that for alluvium depths less than 10 m, reflection of the body waves from lower boundaries back to the soil and resonance phenomenon increases the critical distance. However, the critical distance decreases for alluvium depths more than 10 m. Moreover, it was observed that relative density of the alluvium does not significantly influence the critical distance value.
Past earthquakes experience shows that serious damage or collapse of buildings have dramatically accrued when sufficient separation distance has not been provided between two adjacent structures. The majority of past studies related to the pounding topic indicate that obtaining the gap size between two buildings is able to prevent collision and impact hazards during seismic excitations. Considering minimization of building collisions, some relationships have been suggested to determine the separation distance between adjacent buildings. Commonly, peak lateral displacement, fundamental period and natural damping as well as structural height of two adjacent buildings are numerically considered to determine the critical distance. Hence, the aim of present study is to focus on all mentioned parameters and also utilizing the main characteristic of earthquake record i.e. PGA to examine the lateral displacement of irregular structures close to each other and also estimate the sufficient separation distance between them. Increasing and decreasing the separation distance is inherently caused economical problems due to the land ownership from a legal perspective and pounding hazard as well. Therefore, a new equation is proposed to determine the optimum critical distance. The accuracy of the proposed formula is validated by different models and various earthquake records.
In recent decades, the protection and vulnerability of civil structures under explosion loads became a critical issue in terms of security, which may cause loss of lives and structural damage. Concrete retaining walls also restrict soils and slopes from displacements; meanwhile, intensive temporary loading may cause massive damage. In the current study, the modified Johnson-Holmquist (also known as J-H2) material model is implemented for concrete materials to model damages into the ABAQUS through user-subroutines to predict the blasting-induced concrete damages and volume strains. For this purpose, a 3D finite-element model of the concrete retaining wall was conducted in coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation. Subsequently, a blast load equal to 500 kg of TNT was considered in three different positions due to UFC 3-340-02. Influences of the critical parameters in smooth blastings, such as distance from a free face, position, and effective blasting time, on concrete damage rate and destroy patterns, are explored. According to the simulation results, the concrete penetration pattern at the same distance is significantly influenced by the density of the progress environment. The result reveals that the progress of waves and the intensity of damages in free-air blasting is entirely different from those that progress in a dense surrounding atmosphere such as soil. Half-damaged elements in air blasts are more than those of embedded explosions, but dense environments such as soil impose much more pressure in a limited zone and cause more destruction in retaining walls.
