  • To prevent and mitigate damage to farms due to heavy snowfall, snow weight information should be provided in addition to snow depth. This study reviews four formulae regarding snow density and weight used in extant studies and applies them in Suwon area to estimate snow weight in Korea. We investigated the observed snow depth of 94 meteorological stations and automatic weather stations (AWS) data over the past 30 years (1988-2017). Based on the spatial distribution of snow depth by area in Korea, much of the fresh snow cover, due to heavy snowfall, occurred in Jeollabuk-do and Gangwon-do. Record snowfalls occurred in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gangwon-do. However, the most recent heavy snowfall in winter occurred in Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Jeollanam-do. This implies that even if the snow depth is high, there is no significant damage unless the snow weight is high. The estimation of snow weight in Suwon area yielded different results based on the calculation method of snow density. In general, high snow depth is associated with heavy snow weight. However, maximum snow weight and maximum snow depth do not necessarily occur on the same day. The result of this study can be utilized to estimate the snow weight at other locations in Korea and to carry out snow weight prediction based on a numerical model. Snow weight information is expected to aid in establishing standards for greenhouse design and to reduce the economic losses incurred by farms.

  • HDPE smooth and textured GMs were cut into dumbbell shape and notched where depth of the notch produced a ligament thickness of 90% to 10% of the nominal thickness of the specimen at 10% interval. Yield stress and elongation were measured of those samples and plotted on Graph. Yield stress and elongation at yield point decreases gradually as the notch depth is increased. Both installations damaged and notched GMs were used to understand stress crack behavior. Intact sample were notched in such a manner that the depth of notch produced a ligament thickness of 80% of the nominal thickness of the specimen. Installation damaged samples were not notched. Stress Crack Resistance behavior was observed using NCTL Test at $50{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ at different yield stresses immerging with pH 4 and pH 12 buffer solutions. Significant difference was observed in both cases.

  • This paper aims to clarify the effects of grinding conditions on the ground surface and bending strength in surface grinding of various ferrites with diamond wheel. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. The surface roughness becomes better at lower wheel speed in the case of v/V=1$\times$10-3, and the condition of v/V=1$\times$10-4shows the best performance for the finish grinding. When the relative contact temperature becomes lower at a constant value of v/V, the ground surface exhibits lower roughness. The ground surface shows that the fracture process during grinding becomes more brittle at the higher value of v/V. The damage depth which affect the bending strength is below 10$\mu$m in the grinding condition of S=10㎣/mm.s with the diamond tool after dressing & truing, however, the depth increases with increasing removal rate(S). When the strength degradation due to grinding is larger, the removal depth for the recovery of strength requires a larger size.

  • It is necessary to build countermeasure for the reduction of flood damage, such as the analysis of shelter activities of local residents and the publishment of flood informations. The control factors for mental refuge activity by the questionnaire survey were classified and estimated into two categories: internal and external ones. Furthermore, the optimal time for refuse activities related to flood risk was derived by hydraulic simulation. The shelter activities considering inundation depth will serve citizen's consensus by exercise, it would aid to support the activities to minimize flood victims.

  • PURPOSES: This study is to evaluate a ground water level effect on frost heaving in road pavements. METHODS: The effects of water table on frost heaving in pavement systems were evaluated from the mechanical analysis using FROST program. The input parameters and boundary conditions were determined by considering climates, pavement sections, and material properties specially subgrade soil types in Korea. RESULTS: When the water table located above the freezing depth, amount of frost heaving caused by freezing the water in pavement itself was big enough to damage in pavement system, although pavement system consists of fully non-frost-susceptible materials with sufficient thickness of anti-freezing layer. The amount of frost heaving was decreased rapidly with increasing the distance between the water table and freezing depth. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that there is no engineering problems related with frost heaving in practical sense when the distance between freezing depth and water table is over 1.5m for having subgrade soils less than 50% of #200 sieve passing to meet specification on quality control in Korea.

  • Heavy snow damage can be prevented in advance with an appropriate security system. To develop the security system, we developed a model that predicts snow depth after a few hours when the snow depth is observed, and utilized it to calculate a failure probability with various types of greenhouses and observed snow depth data. We compared the Markov chain model and Bayesian long short-term memory models with varying input data. Markov chain model showed the worst performance, and the models that used only past snow depth data outperformed the models that used other weather data with snow depth (temperature, humidity, wind speed). Also, the models that utilized 1-hour past data outperformed the models that utilized 3-hour data and 6-hour data. Finally, the Bayesian LSTM model that uses 1-hour snow depth data was selected to predict snow depth. We compared the selected model and the shifting method, which uses present data as future data without prediction, and the model outperformed the shifting method when predicting data after 11-24 hours.

  • Plasma etching process employs high density plasma to create surface chemistry and physical reactions, by which to remove material. Plasma chamber includes silicon-based materials such as a focus ring and gas distribution plate. Focus ring needs to be replaced after a short period. For this reason, there is a need to find materials resistant to erosion by plasma. The developed chemical vapor deposition processing to produce silicon carbide parts with high purity has also supported its widespread use in the plasma etch process. Silicon carbide maintains mechanical strength at high temperature, it have been use to chamber parts for plasma. Recently, besides the structural aspects of silicon carbide, its electrical conductivity and possibly its enhanced life time under high density plasma with less generation of contamination particles are drawing attention for use in applications such as upper electrode or focus rings, which have been made of silicon for a long time. However, especially for high purity silicon carbide focus ring, which has usually been made by the chemical vapor deposition method, there has been no study about quality improvement. The goal of this study is to reduce surface roughness and depth of damage by diamond tool grit size and tool dressing of diamond tools for precise dimensional assurance of focus rings.

  • This study aimed to analysis factors related to in-hospital death of injured patients by patient safety accident. A total of 1,529 inpatients were selected from Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention database(2013-2017). Frequency, Fisher's exact test, t-test, ANOVA, logistic regression analyses by using STATA 12.0 were performed. Analysis results show that the mortality rate was lower for female than male but the mortality rate was higher for the older age, the higher the CCI, head (or neck), multiple, systemic damage sites, internal and others, metropolitan cities based on Seoul and 300-499 based on the bed size of 100-299. Based on these findings, the possibility of using the in-depth investigation of discharge damage from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a data source for the patient safety survey conducted to understand the actual status of patient safety accident types, frequency, and trends should be reviewed. Also, it is necessary to prevent injury and minimize death by identifying factors that affect death after injury by patient safety accident.

  • This paper is the study on the verification of structural health monitoring (SHM) algorithm based on the ultrasonic guided wave. An active inspection system using Lamb wave (LW) for SHM was considered. The basic study about the application of this algorithm was performed for detecting the circular notch defect in steel plate. LW testing technique, pitch-catch method, was used for interpretation of circular notch defect with depth of 50% of plate thickness and 7 mm width. Damage characterization takes place by comparing $S_0$ mode sensor signals collected before and after the damage event. By subtracting the signals of both conditions from each other, a scatter signal is produced which can be used for damage localization. The continuous Gabor wavelet transform is used to attain the time between the arrivals of the scatter and sensor signals. A new practical damage monitoring algorithm, based on damage monitoring polygon and pitch-catch method, has been proposed and verified with good accuracy. The possible damage location can be estimated by the average on calculated location points and the damage extent by the standard deviation.
