Climate change has intensified the severity of extreme floods, presenting substantial challenges to dam management and operation. Traditionally, flood control strategies for dam operations have been based on theoretical scenarios, such as designed floods, without taking into account downstream conditions. However, in practice, managing floods involves operating dams based on climate forecasts. This strategy encounters challenges due to the limited predictability of climate forecasts, which in turn leads to uncertainty in decisionmaking among dam managers. This study proposes a flood control approach for dam operations that involves gradually increasing the outflow, considering the operational constraints and potential downstream damage, based on inflow data. The effectiveness of this method was assessed through simulation, employing both a designed flood and data from the most significant historical flood. The dam operation strategy for flood control presented in this study provides a framework for dam operators, facilitating consistent decisionmaking in flood management by integrating realistic dam operational conditions.
A real-time single reservoir operation model using the Min-max Dynamic Programming for the flood control of Soyanggang Dam and Choongju Dam is developed. The objective function is to minimize the maximum release from each dam and the constraints are those from ther reservoir and channel characteristics. Control and utilization efficiencies are used to measure the performance of the reservoir operation method (ROM). In comparison with those of simulation models(such as the Rigid ROM, the Technical ROM and the Linear Decision Rule), the efficiencies of the optimization model are superior for all return periods.
In this study the results of optimal water supply analysis by operating constraints of reservoirs during drought period are as follows. During drought period, water supply reliability is possible about $97\~61{\%}$ by CASE 1-CASE 5. Water supply reliability is possible about $97.3{\%}$ in case of the Andong dam and $87.7{\%}$ in case of the Imha dam by CASE 3. Also, under the constraints of CASE 4, water supply reliability is possible about $87.5{\%}$ in case of the Andong dam and $73.3{\%}$ in case of the Imha dam. The reason what low of available water supply ratio is decreased inflow of Imha dam. When compare standard deviation of average storage with standard deviation of storage, stable storage can be secured during successive drought period. And it also can minimize shortage of water during drought. therefore, it is impossible that reservoir supply sufficient water but change of operating condition is better than pervious on that followed by full reservoir level. It is need that the study for optimal water supply during drought period has to be continued.
This study aims at the development of DP-Model for the establishment of monthly optimal operation policy of single multi-puppose reservoir by which the water demand of downstream can be satisfied under the various physical constraints. Series, A. B. C. of inflow are selected out of future monthly inflow data which are simulated form the past monthly average inflow of Andong dam site. the neight possible alternatives in each inflow series are established in order that Andong dam can supply the water demand of Nagdong main stream of 30% to 100%. Nextly, the reservoir rule curves is derived for each alternative by the detailed seguential analysis of stroage, future inflow and water demand based on the reservoir continuite equation. Then, and alternative which can satisfy the objective function of system based on the rule curves in the exteream is determined as an optimal operation policy from the application of developed DP=Model.
An optimal operation model for flood control of multi-reservoirs, Hwacheon and Soyanggang, located in the north Han River basin is developed by using the Incremental DP. The objective function is to minimize the peak flow at the confluence point, of Euam dam, and the hydraulic and hydrologic constraints are established by considering the related laws as to the operation of dam in flood season, each reservoir and channel characteristics. In particular, the final elevations of each reservoir are induced to the conservation pool level in order to prepare for the secondary flood. In addition, the results of this model, simulation results and the single reservoir operation by DP are compared in terms of control and utility efficiencies, and also the peak flows at the confluence point for floods with various return periods are compared with the results of simulation suing feedback control. as the results, the control and utility effciencies are more or less low in contrast with the results of simulation and the single reservoir operation by DP, and the peak flows at confluence point are high because of terminal condition of reservoir storage.

A mechanical face seal is a tribo-element intended to control leakage of working fluid at the interface of a rotating shaft and its housing. Leakage of working fluid decreases drastically as the clearance between mating seal faces gets smaller. But the very small clearance may result in an increased reduction of seal life because of high wear and heat generation. Therefore, in the design of mechanical face seals a compromise between low leakage and acceptable seal life is important, ant it present a difficult and practical design problem. A fluid film or sealing dam geometry of the seal clearance affects seal lubrication performance very much, and thereby is optimization is one of the main design consideration. in this study the Reynolds equation for the sealing dam of mechanical face seals is numerically analyzed, using the Galerkin finite element method, which is readily applied to various seal geometries, to give lubrication performances, such as opening force, restoring moment, leakage, and axial and angular stiffness coefficients. Then, to improve the seal performance an optimization is performed, considering various design variables simultaneously. For the tested case the optimization ha successfully resulted in the optimal design values of outer and inner seal radii, coning, seal clearance, and balance radius while satisfying all the operation subjected constraints and design variable side-constraints, and improvements of axial and angular stiffness coefficients by 16.8% and 2.4% respectively and reduction of leakage by 38.4% have been achieved.
Reservoir operation during flood period can be divided into two parts: One is for an operating policy during flood period to consider water conservation and flood control, and the other is for flood time on a random water level at flood forecasting, This study is concerned with reservoir operation and discusses general reservoir operation at flood time. Flood control has problems such as the uncertainty of hydrologic models. technical limitations and some constraints. Therefore, we may prepare the quantitative flood control methods based on the assured flood control storage for reservoir operation. Transformed Reservoir Flood(TRF) Reservoir Operation Method(ROM) is a procedure which determines the adequate releases with considering dam safety for flood inflows over non-damaging discharge. Based on the TRF ROM which was explained in our published paper. the study discusses the TRF ROM with additional investigations and the general reservoir operation rules at flood time.
In Korea, more than 60% of the whole lands are mountainous area. Since many decades ago, hydroelectric power plants have been constructed and eco-friendly energy has been produced. Hydropower can cope with the rapidly changing energy supply and demand, and produce eco-friendly energy. However, when the reservoir is built, it is often inevitable to damage the environment due to construction of large structure. In this study, the optimal reservoir operation model was developed to maximize power generation by monthly operation for long-term operation planning. The dam operation model was developed using the linear programming which is widely used in the optimal resources allocation problems. And the reservoir operation model can establish monthly operation plan for 1 year. Linear programming requires both object function and constraints to be linear. However, since the power generation equation is nonlinear, it is linearized using the Taylor Expansion technique. The optimization results were compared with the 2009-2018 historical data of five hydropower reservoirs. As a result, the total optimal generation is about 10~37% higher than the historical generation.

The purpose of multipurpose reservoir operation in flood season is to reduce the peak flood at a control point by utilizing flood control storage or to minimize flood damage by controlling release and release time. Therefore, the most important thing in reservoir operation for flood season is to determine the optimal release and release time. In this study, goal programming is used for the optimal reservoir operation in flood season. The goal programming minimizes a sum of deviation from the target value using linear programming or nonlinear programming to obtain the optimal alternative for the problem with more than two objectives. To analyze the applicability of goal programming, the historical storm data are utilized. The goal programming is applied to the reservoir system operation as well as single reservoir operation. Chungju reservoir is selected for single reservoir operation and Andong and Imha reservoirs are selected for reservoir system operation. The result of goal programming is compared with that of HEC-5. As a result, it was found that goal programming could maintain the reservoir level within flood control level at the end of a flood season and also maintain flood discharge within a design flood at a control point for each time step. The goal programming operation is different from the real operation in the sense that all inflows are assumed to be given in advance. However, flood at a control point can be reduced by calculating the optimal release and optimal release time using suitable constraints and flood forecasting system.
Reservoir operations during the flood season should consider both the flood control and water supply objectives. This study proposed Set Control Algorithm (SCA) as a reservoir operation method, which guarantees both objectives. The concept behind SCA is to provide operators with a set of actions that guarantee feasibility, given a set of operational constraints, and to let them select decisions within a set that satisfies other considerations. The inflow sets used in this study included; observed data, synthetic data, and ESP(Ensemble Streamflow Prediction) scenarios. Applied to the Chungju Dam operations, SCA was compared to the variable flood restricted elevation, as well as the current flood restricted elevation. A 5-year simulation analysis showed that SCA performed better than the other operation methods, and that SCA coupled with ESP performed best among the SCA cases.
