Nonlinear dynamic behavior of Pamukcay Earthfill Dam

  • Water and energy supplies are the key factors affecting the economic development and environmental improvement of Turkey. Given their important role and the fact that a large part of Turkey is in seismically active zones dams should be accurately analyzed since failure could have a serious impact on the local population environment and on a wider level could affect the economy. In this paper, a procedure is proposed for the static, slope stability, seepage and dynamic analysis of an earth dam and the Pamukcay embankment dam. The acceleration time history and maximum horizontal peak ground accelerations of the $Bing\ddot{o}l$ (2003) earthquake data was used based on Maximum Design Earthquake (MDE) data. Numerical analysis showed that, the Pamukcay dam is likely to experience moderate deformations during the design earthquake but will remain stable after the earthquake is applied. The result also indicated that, non-linear analysis capable of capturing dominant non-linear mechanism can be used to assess the stability of embankment dams.

중력식댐의 지진시 안전검토에 대한 뉴 패러다임 (New Paradigm on the Safety Check of Concrete Gravity Dams at Earthquake)

  • In the safety check of gravity dams at earthquake, there have been two types of analysis conducted simultaneously; one is stability analysis and the other stress analysis. But those are essentially the same calculation other than the former considers the dams rigid, while the latter considers the dams' dynamic characteristics which results in the amplification of response acceleration on the upper part of dam body. In this paper, the identity of those two methods is verified by example calculation in terms of stability check of gravity dam. It can be concluded that if stress analysis were performed, stability check of gravity dam could be accomplished with the results from stress analysis, removing unnecessary present dual calculation practice.

진동대시험을 이용한 콘크리트 표면 차수벽형 석괴댐의 내진성능 평가 (Evaluation of Resistance of Concrete-Face Rockfill Dam to Seismic Loading Using Shaking Table Test)

  • In this study, seismic safety of CFRD(Concrete-Face Rockfill Dam) type "D" dam in operation is evaluated from the results of 1-g shaking table test using similitude laws. Model dam is made by similitude law considering the grain size of prototype dam component. After the model dam is impounded to the normal water level(N.W.L), it is excited by artificial earthquake wave corresponding to standard design respond spectrum of the "D" dam site. Displacement response behavior of the dam is examined through the measurement of vertical and horizontal displacement of dam crest. Also, amplification characteristics of acceleration with dam height is examined through the measurement of acceleration with dam height. Finally, the purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic safety of "D" dam in operation. From the results of acceleration measurement, it was found that acceleration of dam crest was amplified about 1.52 times compared to the acceleration of dam bottom and amplification phenomenon is outstanding at three quarters of dam height from the bottom of dam. From the analysis of displacement behavior, it was estimated that vertical displacement of prototype dam is 6.8cm (0.1% of dam height) and horizontal displacement 12.3cm(0.2% of dam height). These percentages is much lower than 1% of dam height(general stability criteria). Therefore, it was concluded that seismic stability of "D" dam against an estimated earthquake is guaranteed.

  • In this study, a 3D laser scanner is applied to evaluate of the stability of rock slope and to establish a adequate counter-method. From 3D scanning results, three dimensional digital data of rock slope is acquired, and then it is investigated for the engineering properties of discontinuities in rock mass. On the base of the result, we carry out the analysis of slope stability using the methods of the stereographic projection. In particular, the use of a 3D laser scanner is powerful about the slope on which person is difficult to approach because we can obtain the informations of discontinuities from the 3D digital data.

  • Evaluating stability of dam foundations is one of the prime areas of any rock engineering investigations. Despite best engineering efforts in the design and construction of dam foundations, the foundation regime of a constructed dam suffers deterioration due to continuous erosion from backwater current of dam discharge and dynamic effects of loading and unloading process. Even during construction, development of frequent cracks due to sudden thermal cooling of concrete blocks is not uncommon. This paper presents two case studies from India and Bhutan. In the first case, the back current of water discharge from the Srisailam dam in India had continuously eroded the apron and has eaten into the dam foundation. In the second case with dam construction at Tala Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan, sudden overflow of river during the construction stage of dam had led to development of three major cracks across the dam blocks. This was ascribed to adiabatic cooling effect of concrete blocks overlain by chilled water flow. Non-destructive evaluation of rock mass condition in the defect regime by the borehole GPR survey helped in arriving at the crux so as to formulate appropriate restoration plan.

  • 담수시 저수되는 수압에 의해 face slab con'c 내부의 응력변화가 발생하여 댐 제체의 안정성에 영향을 미칠 가능성이 있으므로 face slab con'c의 내부 응력변화를 측정하기 위하여 매립형 strain gauge가 많이 적용되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 ${\circ}{\circ}$댐에 적용된 strain gauge를 이용하여 댐 제체 내 외부 변형을 측정하였다. 그 결과 댐의 안정성 분석과 전체적인 경향을 파악함에 있어서 strain gauge의 계측 값만으로는 한계가 있으므로 관련 계기의 측정값을 함께 검토해야 할 것으로 사료된다.

  • The paper decribes a procedure for the evaluation of the effect of seepage force on stability of slopes. The stability of an embankment impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment. To evaluate the accurate safety factor of an embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change of reservoir level. Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined interest is the stability following a rapid change of resrvoir level. Seepage forces in embankments are easily detemined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient I. If a piezometer is inserted into a body of embankment, the level to which fee water rises is a measure of the energy at that point.

  • 본 연구는 최근 기상이변의 영향으로 활발히 진행 중인 댐 치수능력사업의 일환으로, 운영 중인 콘크리트 표면차수벽형석괴댐(Concrete Face Rockfill Dam, CFRD)에서 측정된 계측결과와 시간 의존적 점탄성모델인 Kelvin 모델을 회귀분석하여 댐완공 이후 추가적인 하중증가 없이도 발생되고 있는 크리프(Creep)와 같은 댐의 장기 변형특성을 예측하고, 이와 같은 댐의 변형특성이 댐 제체를 구성하는 재료의 물리적 특성치(E, G, K) 변화에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 또한 댐의 장기적인 변형거동에 따른 물리적 특성치 변화가 댐 안정성에 미치는 영향과 댐 증고 시 댐의 장기적인 안정성 확보를 위한 합리적인 댐 안정성 평가방법을 제시하였다.

도시생활권의 토석류 피해 저감을 위한 복합형 사방댐의 안정성 및 기능성 평가 (Evaluating Stability and Functionality of Hybrid Erosion Control Dam for Reducing Debris Flow Damage in Forested Catchment Nearby Urban Area)

  • 본 연구는 도시생활권의 특성을 고려한 재해예방용 사방댐을 개발하고, 현장에서의 활용성을 검토하기 위하여 안정성 및 기능성을 평가하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 필러와 바닥스크린을 활용한 토석류 방재댐과 수제를 활용한 토석류 제어댐 등 복합형 사방댐 2종을 개발하였고, 각 구조물의 정적(활동, 전도, 지지) 및 동적(부재력) 안정성을 검토하였다. 그 결과, 각 검토항목별로 충격력에 대한 안정성에 미달하는 경우도 일부 나타났으나, 대부분 항목에서 기준 안전율을 만족하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 개발된 사방댐을 토대로 축소모형을 제작하여 수로실험을 실시한 결과, 사방댐을 설치하지 않은 대조구에 비교하여 유하물의 퇴적범위와 퇴적속도를 감소시켰고, 포착율은 평균적으로 3.5배 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 추후 수행될 다양한 조건에서의 수로실험 결과를 바탕으로 개발된 도시생활권형 사방댐의 기능을 보다 정량적으로 구체화 할 수 있다면, 이를 도시생활권에 활용하여 산지토사재해 피해를 효과적으로 저감할 수 있을 것으로 기대되었다.

Kinematical Element Method를 이용한 Carsington Dam의 안정해석

  • The stability of the Carsington dam at Derbyshire in middle Eng1and is analysed using the Kinematical Element Method (Program LSDKSLOP). The thin yellow clay layer and the pore pressure at the failure surface, which goes through the core and boot, are considered. The influence of the pre-existing shears of the yellow clay on the stability of the Carsington dam is studied. Comparisons with the calculated and the observed failure surface are presented.
