Effects of feeding browses on growth and meat quality of Korean native goats were investigated. Twenty eight heads of male goats were divided into four treatment groups fed diets containing oak browse, pine browse, fermented pine browse, and rice straw. Growth rate, feed intake, carcass and meat quality and blood and serum criteria were investigated. The highest average daily gain of goats was 45.3g from oak browse, and goats on pine browse gained similar to those on fermented pine browse. Daily forage intake was 197g DM for oak browse and 74g DM for fermented pine browse. Feed efficiency(g feed/g gain) of oak browse was 11.0g and that of pine browse was 15.1g. From the results of serological inspection, metabolism in body was normal with all the browses tested. Dressing percentage was 45.1~46.2% and meat percentage was 55.2~55.9% without significant differences between diets. Fat percentage of goat carcasses fed rice straw was higher than those fed pine browse or fermented pine browse which was, however, not significantly different from those on oak browse. Shear force and coking loss of goat meat on pine browse or fermented pine browse was less than those on rice straw(p〈0.05) without significant differences between other browses. Juiciness, tenderness, and flavor of the goat meat were the better(p<0.05) from the pine browse diet than from rice straw.

In a trial involving 120 pigs, the growth performance of finishing pigs and proximate composition, physicochemical properites and fatty acid composition of loin muscle were investigated by feeding the high-energy density diet and low-energy density diet. The treatments included feeding 1) the low-energy density diet (3,290 cal/kg DE, 14.50% CP, 0.70% lysine and 0.78% Ca) for 38 days and 2) the hight-energy density diet (3,350 cal/kg ME, 15.0% CP, 0.70% lysine and 0.78% Ca) for 27 days. The average daily gains were significantly higher for pigs fed the high-energy density diet than those fed the low-energy density diet, but average daily feed intake and feed conversion rate were significantly lower than those fed the low-energy density diet (p<0.05). The cooking loss and yellowness of pork were significantly (p<0.05) lower for pigs fed the low-energy density diet than those fed the high-energy density diet. There were no significant differences in carcass characteristics, proximate composition and fatty acid composition of pork. In conclusion, the results of the experiment suggested that the high-energy density diet for pigs tended to improve the growth performance, but the cooking loss and yellowness of pork were higher for pigs fed the high-energy density diet than those fed the low-energy density diet.
Two feeding experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of fermented cactus fruit (Opuntia ficusindica) fluid (FCFF) as a feed additive to a commercial diet on the growth of red sea bream, Pagrus major, and to determine an effective dose. FCFF was prepared by mixing crushed cactus fruit with a starch solution and commercially available microorganisms for 2 weeks at room temperature. Three triplicate groups of red sea bream had initial mean weights of 84.1 g (Exp-1) and 5.1 g (Exp-2) and were fed experimental diets containing 0%, 1%, and 5% FCFF for 2 months (Exp-1) and 0%, 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1% FCFF for 3 months (Exp-2), respectively. In experiment 1, the mean body weight of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of fish fed the diet without FCFF. The survival rate was highest in fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF, although the difference was not statistically significant. The feed gain ratio (FGR), specific growth rate (SGR), and condition factor (CF) values of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF were higher than those of fish in the other dietary groups that received lower levels of FCFF. The daily feeding rate (DFR) of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was slightly lower but not statistically different than the DFR values of fish in the other dietary groups. In experiment 2, the final mean body weight of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was significantly (P<0.05) higher than the mean weight of fish in the control group. The FGR, SGR, and CF values of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF were better than the values from fish in the other dietary groups that received lower levels of FCFF, although the differences were not statistically significant. However, the DFR of fish fed the diet containing 1% FCFF was lower than those of fish in the other groups. These results suggest that FCFF could be used as a feed additive in commercial fish food and a preferable level of supplementation is at least 1.0% in fingerling and young red sea bream.

Objective: The aim was to evaluate backgrounding beef steers on oat + ryegrass pastures mixed with vetch and/or using energy supplementation. Methods: A randomized block design with three treatments and three replications was used. The treatments were: grass + supplement (oat + ryegrass + supplementation), legume + supplement (oat + ryegrass + vetch + supplementation) and grass + legume (oat + ryegrass + vetch). A continuous grazing system with a variable stocking rate was used. Twenty-seven intact crossbred steers (1/4 Marchigiana, 1/4 Aberdeen Angus and 2/4 Nellore) aged 7 months old and average weight of 190 kg were used. Steers were supplemented at 1% of the body weight of ground corn. The experiment lasted 84 days, between May and August 2014. Behavioral assessments were performed two times per experimental period, for 24 hours. Results: The forage mass was different between treatments, being greater for steers fed without legume. The accumulation rate, forage allowance, and stocking rate did not differ between treatments due to the adequate adjustment of forage allowance. The final weight of animals, as well as the dry matter intake (kg/d), did not differ between treatments. However, forage intake was higher for non-supplemented animals in relation to supplemented steers. Supplement intake did not alter the total digestible nutrient intake due to pasture quality. Animals fed grass + supplement had higher live weight gain per area than those fed grass + legume. Animals without supplementation spent more time in grazing. Conclusion: Feeding behavior was not altered by mixing with vetch or supplementation. Non-supplemented animals started the grazing peak earlier and spent more time in grazing than those supplemented; however, the average daily gain was similar between treatments. The live weight gain per hectare was 47% higher in pastures in which the animals received supplementation compared with those mixed with vetch, a consequence of the substitutive effect.

To investigate the oviposition preference and development of azuki bean weevil (Callosobruchus chinensis L.), the following six different leguminous seeds were used in this study: red bean (Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi), black soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), seoritae (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), small black bean (Rhynchosia nulubilis) and kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris var. humilis Alef.). In the study of oviposition preference, the numbers of eggs per leguminous seed on red bean, black soybean, soybean, seoritae and small black bean were 1.23, 0.61, 0.69, 1.05 and 1.13, respectively. The maximum daily number of eggs was observed at 48 hours and the minimum was at 96 hours. According to each host leguminous seed, developmental time for each host seed was different. The shortest adult emergence time was on red bean (25.27 days). The other five leguminous seeds increased or doubled the adult emergence time. Adult emergence rates feeding on red bean, seoritae, black soybean, soybean, small black bean were 83.33%, 28.23%, 27.87%, 20.44%, and 11.59%, respectively. Emergence rate on red bean was four times higher than the rate on other seeds. The longevity of emerged female adults was almost all longer than that of males. The male adults weighed the lowest of feeding on small black bean. Female adults weighed the lowest of feeding on soybean. Adult weights were the heaviest for both males and females feeding on red bean. As a result, hosts of azuki bean weevil could decrease oviposition rate, emergence rate, adult longevity, and adult weight but increase emergence time. Especially in kidney bean, adult was not completely emerged. No eggs were laid. These results suggest that there might be emergence inhibitors in kidney bean. These imformation might be used to control damages caused by azuki bean weevils.
Objective: The object of this study was to investigate the effect of replacing soybean meal with Clostridium autoethanogenum protein (CAP) in broiler diets on growth performance, blood indicators, antioxidant capacity, and immune function. Methods: A total of 180 Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into three treatments, each treatment with six replicates and 10 broilers per replicate for a 42-day feeding trial. The control group (CON) was fed corn-soybean meal based diet. The CAP-1 and CAP-2 groups were considered to use CAP to replace 25% or 50% of soybean meal in the diet, respectively. The average daily gain and average daily feed intake of broilers at 1 to 21 d, 22 to 42 d, and 1 to 42 d were measured, and the feed conversion ratio was calculated. At the 42nd day of age, two broilers with similar weights and fasted for 12 h were selected in each replicate for blood collection from the brachial wing vein. The blood routine indicators, serum biochemical indicators, serum antioxidant capacity, and immunoglobulin content of broiler chickens were measured. Results: Replacement of soybean meal with 25% (CAP-1) and 50% (CAP-2) CAP significantly increased the average daily gain of 22 to 42 d and 1 to 42 d and decreased the average daily feed intake and feed conversion rate (p<0.05). The CAP-1 group, and CAP-2 group significantly increased hemoglobulin in the blood of broilers, while the CAP-2 group increased hematocrit content (p<0.05). Compared with the control group, the contents of superoxide dismutase and immunoglobulin A in serum of the CAP-2 group were significantly increased, while the contents of malondialdehyde in CAP group were significantly decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: Replacing soybean meal with CAP led to significant improvements in the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and immunoglobulin content of broilers.
The objective of this study was to evaluate seasonal patterns and diel variations of fish movements in the Juksan Weir which was constructed in 2010 at the down-stream of Yeongsan-River watershed. For this study, we monitored day-and-night movement(24 Hr cycle) and seasonal fish migration(June ~ August) patterns in 2011 along with species compositions and abundances depending on the locations of the traps within the fishway. Total number of species sampled was 14 and the total number of individuals was 1,263 with only the size-fractions(as total length) of the fish < 20 cm during the study. Seasonal analysis of fish movement in the fish way showed that highest frequency in the movement occurred in June - July, which is closely associated with a spawning peak season. The most dominant species using the fishway was Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, and this species turned out to be 26.9% of the total in the use rate of fishway. Daily monitoring of fish movements showed that most frequent movements occurred between 18:00 PM and 21:00 PM when the fish have a feeding time generally. The migratory fish were not found in the fishway during the study. Mean current velocity during the study $0.42{\pm}0.02ms^{-1}$(n = 42), and there were no significant statistical differences(p > 0.05) among the daily and monthly velocities in the fishway. The use rate of fish passage, in terms of fish species, was 48%, compared with total sampling of fish species(29 species) at the down-river regions during the same period, indicating a low use rate. Further continuous long-term monitoring should be conducted to evaluate the impacts of the weir construction in the river.
The effects of different stocking densities on the growth of juvenile abalone, Haliotis discus hannai and water quality in the recirculating system with rotating biological contactor, were assessed. The trials were conducted using total weight 32 g juveniles abalone for 60 days at stocking densities of 5, 10, 15 kg/$m^2$. The animals were fed sufficient amounts of the pellet diet of 30.4% protein during the experimental period. Daily feeding rate (DFR) and survival rate (SR) of 5 kg/$m^2$ showed 0.76% and 85.5% those were not significantly differed 10 kg/$m^2$ showing 0.75% and 96.0% (P>0.05). DFR and SR of 15 kg/$m^2$ showing 0.38% and 31.2% were significantly lower than 5 and 10 kg/m2 (P<0.05). Daily growth rate (DGR) and feed efficiency (FE) showed the highest as 0.19% and 24.2% in 5 kg/$m^2$ the lowest as 0.05% and 14.3% in 15 kg/$m^2$ (P<0.05). According to, these results was an inverse relationship between growth and stocking density. The optimum density of juvenile abalone from this experiment is 5 to 10 kg/$m^2$ in the recirculating system.
A study was carried out to improve the feeding practice of Korean native goats. Ten goats were used in this study to obtain basic information needed for the determination of energy and nitrogen requirements for maintenance and growth. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The daily gain of male and female goats were $80{\pm}13.9g(\bar{x}{\pm}S.E.)$ and $41{\pm}8.9g$, respectively. 2. The amounts of orchardgrass hay and formula feed consumption by goats were 0.60-0.75% and 1.80-2.80% of their body weights, respectively, when fed ad libitum. The daily consumption of orchardgrass hay by goats when fed alone was 1.98-3.16% of their body weights. 3. The amounts of metaholizable energy needed for daily maintenance were 61.6, 65.0 and $72.3Kcal/BW_{kg}{^.75}$ at the live weights of 30, 21 and 12kg, respectively. 4. The daily nitrogen requirements for maintenance were 7.07, 4.67 and $3.04g/BW_{kg}{^.75}$ at the live weights of 30, 21 and kg, respectively. 5. Daily energy retention was 138 kcal/head and nitrogen retention rate was 13.3-22.5%.
Forty weaning albino rats were used to find the effects of alternate feeding of high protein diet with different intervals on growth, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, weight of some internal organ, protein digestibility and nitrogen balance. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The growth rate and feed efficiency of group B fed high protein and low protein alternately in every other day was equal to that of A group fed medium protein diet daily. However, the rats fed high protein diet once every three days or every four days could not result in same growth that obtained by group A. 2. The protein efficiency ratio of each group was the same without significant difference. 3. The liver weight appeared to be in proportion to final body weight, but intestine weight and length appeared not to be affected by treatments. 4. The protein digestibility in each group was insignificant. However, urinary nitrogen loss of intermittent high protein feeding group was lower than that of control group and the nitrogen retention ratio decreased with increased nitrogen intake.
