In Oriental medicine daeseungki-tang is one of the prescription that is used clinically for constipation of paralytics. The objective of the study was to observe the effect of daeseungki-tang on apoptotic neuronal cell death. In the present study, middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) rats were treated with daeseungi-tang for 5 days and the edema percentage of cerebral hemisphere of MCAO rats were investigated primary. Secondary, appearances of Bax, Bcl-2,-factors that is related to apoptotic neuronal cell death - and HSP72 in the brain of MCAO rats were investigated via immunohistochemistry. Daeseungki-tang significantly decreased edema percentage of the cerebral hemisphere of MCAO rats. Daeseungki-tang significantly decreased Bax positive cells, but did not change the apperances of Bcl-2 positive cells in the penumbra of the cerebral cortex and the caudoputamen of MCAO rats. Daeseungki-tang significantly decreased HSP72 positive cells in the penumbra of the cerebral cortex, but not in the caudoputamen of MCAO rats. Based on the present results, it can be suggested that treatment with daeseungki-tang may decrease edema of the cerebral hemisphere and restrain apoptotic neuronal cell death in the penumbra of the cerebral cortex.

Objectives : In oriental medicine, Daeseungki-tang is one of the most useful prescriptions for the therapy of constipation. And we also frequently use this prescription for constipated stroke patients. Methods : In order to identify the effects of Daeseungki-tang on constipated stroke patients, we administrated the extract of Daeseungki-tang(code number, HH264) to constipated stroke patients. We gave the medicine in two ways, one-pack group and two-pack group by random allocation and investigated the amount of stool, the frequency of defecation, the stool-form and the changes of blood pressure and body temperature before and after defecation. We also tried to examine the difference of symptoms between defecation-group and non-defecation group. Results : 1. There were no distinct symptoms between defecation-group and non-defecation-group in one-pack group. 2. After defecation, body temperature decreased significantly(P<0.05) in one-pack group and blood pressure decreased significantly(P<0.05) in two-pack group. 3. As for the stool-form, watery-soft was 41.9% in the firstt defecation and 47.1 % in the second defecation. 4. In one-pack group(23 cases), 13 cases(57%) defecated and 10 cases(43%) didn't defecate. And in two-pack group(24 cases), 19 cases(80%) defecated and 5 cases(20%) didn't defecate. These results meant that the effect of Daeseungki-tang was dose dependent. The amount of stool and the frequency of defecation were also dose dependent.

1. Objectives: This study was performed to research the relationship between Sasang Constitution and characteristics of tongue diagnosis based on Donguisusebowon's Experience prescriptions(經驗方). 2. Methods: We searched tongue diagnosis factors in Donguisusebowon and classified this. Based on Donguisusebowon's Experience prescriptions(經驗方), we find tongue diagnosis factors in 6 contemporary Oriental medicine prescription books. 3. Results: Most So-eumin has white thin tongue coating and clear redish tongue color. Yellow tongue coatings are found in symptoms for Yinjinho-tang(Yinchenhao-tang), Soseungki-tang(Xiaochengqi-tang), Daeseungki-tang(Dachengqi-tang). Shortened Tongue is found in So-eumin's experience prescription and So-yangin's treat histroy. It didn't shown that So-eumin's Semen Crotonis included 6 prescritions' factors of tongue diagnosis. So-yangin's white tongue coating is found in Hyungbangpaedok-san(Jingfangbaidu-san), Sipjo-tang(Shizao-tang), Sosiho-tang(Xiaocihu-tang), Shinki-hwan(Shenqi-wan). Most of other So-yangin's tongue coatings are Yellowish and tongue color is deep red. Tae-eumin have thin white tongue coating at the Mahuang-tang(Mahuang-tang). Red tongue color and drying tongue are found at Jowiseungki-tang(Tiaoweichengqi-tang)Daesiho-tang(Dacihu-tang)Saengmaek-san(Shengmai-san) 4. Conclusions: Following So-eumin's Experience prescriptions, So-eumin's tongue color is clear red and tongue coatings are thin white and greasy. Following So-yangin's Experience prescriptions, So-yangin's tongue color is deep red and tongue coatings are yellowish and scarce except Exterior cold disease. And So-yangin has specific symptom of irritability, oral sores. Tae-eumin's tongue has two sides of white thin tongue coatings and Red and drying tongue.

Delirium is an acute syndrome of disorientaion caused by dysfunction of brain and has many various symptoms. The characteristic symptoms of delirium are conscious disturbance with disorientation, dysarthria and emotional disturbance. We experienced 84-year-old man who had Wi syndrome(痿證) as well as delirium during the treatment of pneumonia, and whose condition was improved through Oriental medical treatment. The patient was diagnosed as Yangmyeong Disease(陽明病) that was caused by heat in the stomach and stool in the colon, and was treated with Daeseungki-tang (Dachengqi-tang, 大承氣湯). We were able to improve the delirium caused by high fever infection through Oriental medical treatment.
