  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a short message service intervention on adherence to maximal barrier precautions (MBP) and catheter-related blood stream infections. Method: The data were collected from March to September, 2008, at an 826-bed university-affiliated hospital in Daejeon. The study participants were 24 physicians who were inserting central catheters and 133 patients (control group 78 and intervention group 55) with central catheter insertions. The researcher sent the message (adherence to MBP and optimal recommendations) to each internal medicine doctor using the short message service (SMS) for cellular phones. Messages were sent monthly for 3 months. Data were analyzed by chi-square test and t-test using SPSS 12.0 windows program. Result: Adherence to maximal barrier precautions was significantly increased from 44.9% to 69.1% (p=.006) after the SMS intervention. But changes in the rate of CRBSI (catheter related blood stream infection) between the intervention group (1.89) and the control group (4.45) were not significant (p=.323). Conclusions: The results indicate that the SMS intervention is effective in increasing the adherence to maximal barrier precautions and the SMS intervention can be recommended for utilization in infection control nursing practice.

  • Many plans of ecologic streams are developed and performed in several regions. In spite of obtaining of instream water is most important problem to composite an ecologic stream, assessment methods for instream water are too various to estimate an optimal result. This study shows practical assessment method which add regional needs such as stream view and necessary water quality level to the traditional method considering water shortage, water quality, ecologic system and necessary flows. It also shows a feasibility of instream water obtaining project in Daejeon city.

  • This study attempts to estimate the benefits of using water ensuing from the Chilgap multipurpose reservoir for environmental improvement. The contingent valuation method (CVM) was used to elicit the willingness to pay (WTP) for providing environmental improvement water from the Chilgap reservoir to Daechi-stream and Ji-stream. The DCDB (double-bound dichotomous choice) survey method was used to collect data for the analysis. Due to the usually high cost of increasing the sample size, the use of follow-up questions was implemented as an inexpensive method of improving the efficiency of the estimation. A spike model was used in this study because a number of respondents showed zero WTP. The spike model can be estimated as easily as the conventional model. Results show that the average annual household's WTP is 4,516 won using the conventional model and 8,644 won using the spike model. Applying the estimated average annual household's WTP to the Chungnam and Daejeon regional levels, the benefits of environmental improvement water from the Chilgap reservoir is estimated at 11.9 billion won per year. The temporal benefits of providing water for environmental improvement, for a 50-year period at a 6.0% discount rate, is estimated at about 190 billion won in the Chungnam and Daejeon areas. These results could be useful especially when the government tries to determine an appropriate level of investment and to make a policy related to providing environmental improvement water.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the causes of fish kills in the Yudeung Stream in Daejeon, Korea using literature reviews, governmental and our water quality monitoring data of the study site, rainfall data, intensive water quality monitoring during rainfall events, sediment pollutant contents and laboratory bioassay tests. Fish kill in urban streams can be caused by combined effect of reduction in dissolved oxygen concentration, increase in toxic material or increase in turbidity in waterbody due to introduction of surface runoff or effluent of combined sewer overflows after rainfall from the watershed areas. Despite of extensive and intensive field surveys and laboratory tests, it was found that those conventional methods have limitations to identify causes of fish kills in urban streams. It would be necessary to use dynamic water quality modeling to predetermine the range and level of water pollution in the stream and automatic water quality monitoring system that can collect water samples and detect water quality continuously.

  • The ichthyofauna and fish community of the Gap stream water system were studied at 17 sites from March to December, 2000. It was confirmed the presence of 36 species,29 genera in 8 families. Twenty-five species in Cyprinidae was accounted for 69.4% of the total, four species in Cobitidae 11.1% of the total species number. The dominant species in the Gap stream water system was Zacco platypus (relative abundant 52.0%), the subdominant species was Carassius auratus (9.2%). The major dominant species in the each tributary of the Gap stream water system were Zacco platypus (Daejeon stream, 87.0%; Yoodeung stream, 41.5%; Gap stream, 47.5%). Number of Korean endemic species was 12 species in the Gap stream water system and that was a 24.5% of the total Korean endemic species. Ten rare species accounted for less than 0.3% of the total individual numbers. The mean species dominance, diversity and evenness indices of the fish community from the Daejeon stream were 0.76, 0.25 and 0.28, respectively: from the Yoodeong stream, 0.20, 0.65 and 0.83, respectively; from the Gap stream, 0.25, 0.83 and 0.77, respectively. The fish community of the Yoodeung stream was showed closer relationship to that of the Gap stream than to that of the Daejeon stream.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the development of Gab river-basin which was a part of the farm land enlargement to contribute to the increased production of food. The results were as follows; 1. Gab river has the upper stream which occupy 50 percent in moumtains and the mid-stream in the Daejeon city area, and the downstream in a field which is about 22.9 percent in which farming area per household is 0.82 ha., agricultural population is 76 percent except of Daejeon city. Also, urban enlargement of mid-stream basin and development of industrial area in the lower stream diminish farm land. Consequently, this area should be developed to farm land to increase farming size. 2. There is no possibility to develop farm land in mountains of which (64.9 percent) is forests and in midstream which was constructed river-improvement. But Weonjeong area and Yongcheon area will be effective area. 3. If river banks of Weonjeong area will make straight with cost of construction 195,000,000 won, bank length 6 km will be useless, water will flow smoothly, flood will be prevented, farm land will develop 21.66 ha in which rice will produce annually 81.698 M/T which is about 10,860,000 won. 4. This area has good conditions of development. that is, investment efficiency (B/C) is 1.47 more than 1.00. 5. This area is a multiple purpose development district. The reasons are that there are beautiful mountains and a reservoir to be expected to construct, so it will be a sight seeing district in the vicinity of Daejeon city. 6. If Honam railway double line and river straight construction had executed simultaneously, cost of construction 50,000,000 won would have saved.

  • We evaluated stream health, based on integrative approaches of qualitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI), chemical water quality and the index of biological integrity (IBI) using fish assemblages in Daejeon Stream during August 2004 - October 2007. The QHEI values in this study averaged 78.2 (n=28, range: 47$\sim$124), indicating "fair" condition based on the criteria of US EPA (1993). The highest value was in the headwater site (S1) that was 112 (good), whereas the value in S3, mid and downstream was SS (fair-poor) that was the lowest owing to a disturbance on the bed and an artificial bank. Concentrations of chemical parameters such as BOD, TP and conductivity increased from the upstream to the downstream due to higher inputs of organic matters and nutrients from the urban area. Conductivity and TP showed a dilution of stream water by rainwater during summer monsoon. Analysis of fish compositions showed that total number of species was 24 and Zacco platypus was predominated (82%). The mean IBI was 17 (range: 12$\sim$30) during four years and the IBI values also decreased from S1 to S4. These results indicated that ecological health was degradated distinctly as the stream goes down through the city-center. We concluded that Daejeon Stream running through the city are influenced by chemical impact such as an influx of domestic sewage as well as the quality of habitat.

  • Pohang earthquake (Main shock magnitude = 5.4) occurred in Southeastern region of South Korea in November 15, 2017. Groundwater levels of 6 monitoring wells with 5 minutes interval measurements located in that region and stream water levels of 4 stations located along the Hyeongsan-gang stream are used for the analysis of earthquake induced effects. Four groundwater monitoring wells show a short-term decrease of groundwater level after a main shock and one well does an increase and the maximum change is about 42.0 cm. Especially, groundwater levels at two monitoring wells near the epicenter are consistently maintained after a decrease. There is little relationship between earthquake magnitude or a distance to epicenter and changing amount of groundwater level and it may be due to the inhomogeneity of geologic material and unconsolidated sediments distribution. The changes in permeability of fractured zone and groundwater levels occasionally cause changes in stream flow rate, and water level of the Hyeongsan-gang stream in the study area decreases just after the earthquake and increases again up to the normal level and next shows an more gentle decreasing slope. Total increasing flow rates at S1 (upstream site) and S4 (downstream site) stations are about $12,096m^3$ and $116,640m^3$, respectively, during the increasing period.

  • This study was conducted as a basic research to create a sound and vital ecological environment in the city compared to the appearance characteristics of Gap stream(G-stream), which are the main stream of Banseok stream(B-stream), by analyzing the characteristics of waterbirds, including Wild Spot-billed Duck (S-Duck), that live in B-stream built as ecological stream. The waterbird survey was conducted by the line census for 3.2km, Jukdong-bridge to Jamiseon-bridge, from January to August 2018. The analysis of the survey was conducted with Relative species density(RD) of the emerging waterbird species, the Species diversity and Density Per Unit area for 100㎡(DPU). The waterbird survey results of B-stream was conducted 65 times. The five types of water birds that appeared during the survey were Spot-billed Duck(Anas poecilorhyncha), Teal(Anas crecca), Little Egret(Egretta garzetta), Great Egret(Egretta alba), and Grey Heron(Ardea cinerea). As a result, for S-Duck at B-stream, RD was 89.9%, monthly species diversity was simple as 0.3801 in January, 0.5943 in February and 0.3501 in August. The DPU of the S-Duck was 0.165/100㎡ in the B-Stream survey section which was 4.9 times higher than the main stream section, G-stream. The non-freezing zone of the city's small stream is expected to play an important role as a winter stop for wild birds such as S-Duck during the freezing period of the huge stream. For this reason, considering the ecological characteristics of wild waterbirds such as S-Duck when creating ecological stream, a: space and linear selection of waterways which can minimize the impact of natural enemy and increasing the number of walkers, b: management water-friendly plants in the low flow channel, c: arrangement walking-bicycle road will be necessary.

  • Near the Gapcheon, a new suburban city will be developed by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, and a intracity highway will be constructed by Daejeon Metropolitan City. By these new plans, rapid disruption of environmental conditions near the Gapcheon will be anticipated. The new construction of the city and highway will raise a problem of environmental pollution and disruption of natural status of this area, and will have an adverse influence to environment of the Dunsan area and an industrial complex which are located at the downstream of the Gapcheon. This re-search was conducted on the Gapcheon area, Daejeon (Gasuwongyo to Wonchongyo) from August, 2001 to June, 2002 years. Microorganisms of Gapcheon are three forms, 17 varieties, 105 species, 58 geneva, 31 families, and totalled 125 taxa. And zooidal micro-organisms, one varieties, 16 species, 12 genera, eight families, and totalled 17 taxa. Hydrogen ion concentration of the stream is ranged from 7.10 to 9.98 with great variation, especially high below bridges of Gasuwongyo and Mannyeongyo. The clean water quality of the stream is still maintained very well due to dense distribution of diverse aqua-tic and swamp plants. Furthermore, species diversity of microorganisms in the stream does help to purify the quality of water, and to keep the health of the Gapcheon as natural. More environmentally controlled and continuous efforts to keep the Gapcheon in a natural status and to purify the quality of water should be made by Daejeon Metropolitan City Officials who ave now spending about 6G,5()0 million won for overall conservation plans of the stream (from 1999 to 2003 years).
