The Type of Cho(椒) and The Meaning of Gocho(고쵸) (초(椒)의 종류와 고쵸의 의미)

  • In this article, another literatures that original Korean own red pepper (Gochu) was cultivated from ancient years and there were many other varieties of Gocho in Korea were shown. The first book where Gochu was appeared as written in Hangul (Korean own character invented by King Sejong in 1433) was Hunmongjahoe (訓蒙字會) written by Choi Sejin in 1527. However, many books where cho(椒) indicating Korean red pepper (Gochu) was described before Hunmongjahoe. This is consistent with Hongjaejonso(弘齋全書, 1799). King Jungjo asked Kim Dalsun about the type of Cho(椒) in Hongjaejonso, Kim Dalsun answered to King Jungjo that there are many types of Cho such as Chokcho(蜀椒), Jincho(秦椒), Dancho(丹椒), Daecho(大椒) and Hocho(胡椒). When common characteristics in Chokcho, Jincho, Dancho, Daecho and Hocho in Hongjaejonso were studied, it was found that these Chos had one word in common "Gocho(고쵸)" in the Korean translation. Also several Chos such as Buncho(蕃椒), Nammancho(南蠻椒), Mancho(蔓椒) were characterized as Gocho in ancient books. In conclusion there were several Chos such as Chokcho, Jincho, Dancho, Daecho, Hocho, Buncho, Nammancho, Mancho, etc indicating the various types of Cho, and these were all written as Gocho(고쵸) in the Korean character. An original Korean Gocho should be cultivated in Korean peninsula. Several different types of Cho were imported during the course of trade with foreign countries, and these foreign Chos called as Buncho(蕃椒), Nammancho(南蠻椒), Mancho(蔓椒) by discriminating original Korean Gocho(고쵸). The original name of Gochu(고추) is Gocho. Later the Chinese character for Gocho(苦椒) invented in response to the Korean character of "Gocho(고쵸)" by necessity.

Ancient Korean Costume Speculated on the Samguk-yusa (三國遺事)

  • The Samguk-yusa(三國遺事) is one of the two classics of Korean ancient history together with the Samguk-sagi(三國史記); however there has not been any positive attempt to analyse clothing culture centering on the Samguk-yusa until now. Thereupon, this study aims to find the records related to fabrics, color and fashion appearing in the Samguk-yusa, and to analyse the fashion culture of the three kingdoms projected in the Samguk-yusa, referring to the Samguk-sagi and ancient Chinese reference books. According to the records in the book, the fabrics used for clothing of those days included Jikgeum-wimun(織錦爲紋), Geum(錦), Chaebaek(彩帛), Osaek-geumchae(五色錦彩), Geumbaek(錦帛), Geumsam(錦衫), Ma(麻), Neung(綾), Geum-su-neung-ra(錦繡綾羅), Poh(布), Daecho, Bira-geumjeom(緋羅金點), Gyeon(絹). Japchoe(雜綵), Robtyeom(羅緋染). Chimilpoh(緻密布), Gi(綺) and Whan(紈), and they had colors such as brown black(緇), black(黑), purple(紫), yellow(黃), blue(碧), clear white(素), white(白), five colors(五色). There is substantial amoung of report on Buddhism, and the terms used for Buddhist clothing included Beobeui(法衣), Nabeui(衲衣), Bangpoh(方袍), Gasa(袈裟) and Yueui(由衣). It is also ascertained that Gasa had a variety of Bira-geumjeom-gasa(緋羅點袈裟), Manap-gasa(摩納袈裟) and Geumra-gasa(金羅袈裟).

Report on Settlement of Alien Species Red Swamp Crawfish (Procambarus clarkii) in Korea (외래생물 미국가재(Procambarus clarkii)의 국내 자연생태계 정착 보고)

  • The Red swamp crawfish Procambarus clarkii is native to the southern United States and inhibits all over the world including the United States, Asia, Africa and Europe. In Europe, it is known to disrupt ecosystems such as competition with native crayfish. In this study, habitats of red swamp crawfish were identified in Jiseok stream (15.5 km section) and Daecho stream (6.1 km section) of Youngsan river. A total 33 red swamp crawfish were captured. A female captured in Jiseok stream carried 215 newly hatched red swamp crawfish in her the burrow. As a result of the analysis of the habitat environment, the water temperature was ranged of 2.4~32.8℃, conductivity was 53.4~502.3 μS cm-1 and DO was 0.74~22.64 mg L-1. As a result of measuring HOBO, the temperature ranged from -9~48.1℃, showing a change of 57.1℃ throughout the year. The variation of the water temperature throughout the year from 2.9~33.9℃ was found to be 31℃. Red swamp crawfish have a high adaptability and a wide range of environmental resistance, and report a sharp increase in newly invaded areas, negatively affecting indigenous organisms. In addition, it can be used as a medium for the spread of diseases and parasites, so prompt investigation and research should be carried out.
