  • Soil erosion has been issued in many countries since it causes negative impacts on ecosystem at the receiving water bodies. Therefore best management practices to resolve the problem in a watershed have been developed and implemented. As a prior process, there is a need to define soil erosion level and to identify the area of concern regarding soil erosion so that the practices are effective as they are designed. Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) were developed to estimate potential soil erosion and many Geographic Information System (GIS) models employ USLE to estimate soil erosion. Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) is one of the models, the model provided several opportunities to consider various watershed peculiarities such as breaking of slope length, monthly variation of rainfall, crop growth at agricultural fields, etc. SATEEC is useful to estimate soil erosion, however the model can be implemented with ArcView software that is no longer used or hard to use currently. Therefore SATEEC based on ArcView was rebuild for the ArcGIS software with all modules provided at the previous version. The rebuilt SATEEC, ArcSATEEC, was programmed in ArcPy and works as ArcGIS Toolset and allows considering monthly variations of rainfall and crop growth at any watershed in South-Korea. ArcSATEEC was applied in Daecheong-dam watershed in this study, monthly soil erosion was estimated with monthly rainfall and crop growth variation. Annual soil erosion was computed by summing monthly soil erosion and was compared to the conventional approach to estimate annual soil erosion. The annual soil erosion estimated by the conventional approach and by summing monthly approach did not display much differences, however, ArcSATEEC was capable to provide monthly variation of soil erosion.

  • The main objective of this study is to find out the fauna of macroinvertebrate and composition of functional feeding groups about the aquatic insects to microhabitat from the Geum River, Korea. This study is based on investigations of the main channel of Geum River, Korea which is upstream of Daecheong Dam, and carried out in the spring and autumn of 2004. Collections from all the sites were 39,532 individuals, 130 species, 54 families, 16 orders, 7 classes, and 4 phyla of macroinvertebrates. Aquatic insects were composed of 90.76% (118 species) and 98.88% (39,088 individuals) of all the identified species. Among the microhabitats, the riffles were collected 26,293 individuals and 92 species, and the runs were collected 12,329 individuals and 89 species. Finally, the pools were collected 494 individuals and 41 species. In this survey, the proportions of functional feeding groups of aquatic insects were as follows (percent of identified): predators 37.65%, gathering-collectors 23.53%, scrapers 16.47%, filtering-collectors 11.76%, shredders 9.41% and plant-piercers 1.18%. Also, the functional feeding groups were sorted according to microhabitat, in the riffles 30.65% were predators and 29.03% were gathering-collectors; in the run 30.3% were predators, and 28.79% were gathering-collectors; while in the pools 36.67% were predators, and 30.0% were gathering-collectors. In all microhabitats, gathering collectors and predators were predominant, because most of the survey sites are in the midstream. Also, the scrapers were shown more frequently in the riffle (17.74%) and run (18.18 %) than pool (13.13%), the filtering-collectors were shown more frequently in the riffle (14.52%) and the run (12.12%) than the pool (6.67%), and the plant-piercers (3.33%) were found only in pools. But the shredders weren't a difference in the run (10.61%), the pool (10.0%) and the riffle (8.06%), because of the characteristic. Microhabitats (riffle and run) are much alike in composition ratio of functional feeding groups and pool was very lower out of composition ratio in microhabitats. But riffle is very important than run, because most of individual occur in streams. Besides, pool was diverse to composition ratios, considering the number of individuals.

  • Since the self-purification capacity of rivers in Korea is significantly controlled by environmental maintenance flow supplied by upstream reservoirs during drought season, it is obviously important to operate the river and reservoir systems considering not only water quantity aspect but also conservation of downstream water quality and ecosystem. In this study, an unsteady river water quality model KORIVl- WIN was developed as a tool for evaluating the impact. of reservoir operations on the downstream water quality. The model parameters were calibrated and verified using field data obtained in Geum River on September and October of 2002, respectively. Intensive data sampling was performed on November 22, 2003 to investigate the effect of a short-term flushing discharge of Daecheong Reservoir, which increased outflow from 30 $m^3$/s to 200 $m^3$/s for 6 hours, on downstream water quality. The model performance was evaluated by comparing simulated results with observed data including hydraulics, biochemical oxygen demand(BOD$_{5}$), nitrogen and phosphorus species during the flushing event. It showed very good performance in predicting the travel time of flushing flow and water quality variations of dissolved forms of nitrogen and phosphorus species, while revealed large deviations for BOD$_{5}$ possibly due to missing the effect of organic matters resuspension from river bottom sediment during the wave front passage.

  • It is very essential to estimate the water body area using remote exploration for water resource management, analysis and prediction of water disaster damage. Hydrophysical detection using satellites has been mainly performed on large satellites equipped with optical and SAR sensors. However, due to the long repeat cycle, there is a limitation that timely utilization is impossible in the event of a disaster/disaster. With the recent active development of Micro satellites, it has served as an opportunity to overcome the limitations of time resolution centered on existing large satellites. The Micro satellites currently in active operation are ICEYE in Finland and Capella satellites in the United States, and are operated in the form of clusters for earth observation purposes. Due to clustering operation, it has a short revisit cycle and high resolution and has the advantage of being able to observe regardless of weather or day and night with the SAR sensor mounted. In this study, the operation status and characteristics of micro satellites were described, and the water area estimation technology optimized for micro SAR satellite images was applied to the Daecheong Dam basin on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, accuracy verification was performed based on the reference value of the water generated from the optical satellite Sentinel-2 satellite as a reference. In the case of the Capella satellite, the smallest difference in area was shown, and it was confirmed that all three images showed high correlation. Through the results of this study, it was confirmed that despite the low NESZ of Micro satellites, it is possible to estimate the water area, and it is believed that the limitations of water resource/water disaster monitoring using existing large SAR satellites can be overcome.

  • The precipitation data and water level data in twenty-four sampling places, to investigate same hydrological quantities along the basin of Geum River, have been analyzed, and the findings for the first report are summarized as follows. 1. The mean annual precipitation in the basin of Geum River is of 1203mm, and the areal weight of areal rainfall by Thiessen's method shows as Table 1. 2. The areas where have maximum annual precipitation of 1501 to 2000mm, are seventeen placed among twentyfour gauging stations, and it is founded to be the highest rate with 71 percents. The precipitation of below 1500mm is measured in the other three statinons, and that of above 2001mm in four stations, too. 3. The areas where have maximum rainfall of 201 to 300mm within a day, are fifteen places, and that comes in the highest rate of distribution with 63 percents. 4. As to distribution of the places with maximum rainfall of below and above 300mm within two days, it shows respectively 50 percents. 5. The areas where have maximum rainfall of 301 to 400mm within three days, are fifteen places, and it is the highest rate of distribution with 63 percents. 6. The fourteen places have maximum rainfall of 401 to 600mm within a continuous day, it is the highest rate of distribution with 58 percents. 7. Table 5 shows probable maximum rainfall within a day, and it does the most rainfall a long the upper stream of Daecheong dam site around Muju, and the next shows in the areas around Ganggyeung, Gongju and Buyeu. 8. During irrigation period on paddy corp, for 100 days from early ten days in June to early ten days in September the areas where have rainfall of 601 to 800mm are sixteen places, and it is the highest rate of distribution with 76 percents, as Table 6 9. The areas where have effective rainfall of 501 to 600mm, are fifteen places, and it is the highest rate of distribution with 71 percents. Thirteen places have the effective ratio of 66 to 75 percents, and it means 62 percents of distribution, and the next, 76 to 85 percents in the seven places, and it comes 33 percents. 10. The areas where have probable effective rainfall of 401 to 500mm, are fourteen places, which is about 100mm less than mean effective rainfall in each area, and that comes 67 percents of distribution. 11. A particular year can not be appointed as once -in-10 year drought in the same year as a whole in the basin of Geum River. 12. The basin of Geum River, s/S being 0.53 to 0.74, has relatively proper conditions in the aspect of water resources.
