  • Background: Persistent infection of one or more of about 15 high-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs), most commonly HPV types 16/18, has a significant role in cervical cancer initiation and progression. There are limited data available from north-east India about HPV prevalence though this region has high incidence rates of cervical cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the HPV genotypes prevalent in cervical cancer patients of north-east India. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 107 cervical cancer patient samples. Nested multiplex PCR assays were employed for detection of 13 high risk and 5 low risk HPV types. Results: HPV was confirmed in 105 samples. The presence of 6 'carcinogenic' HPV types, HPV-16 (88%), -18 (15%), -31(4%),-45 (3%), -59 (4%), -58(1%), and one non carcinogenic, HPV-6/11 (6%), was recorded. Among various demographic and clinical factors only tumour stage showed a statistically significant association with HPV type infection (P=0.019). Conclusions: We suggest that the most prevalent genotype is HPV-16 followed by HPV-18 in cervical carcinoma patients of the north-eastern region of India. Advanced tumour stage may be associated with increased possibility of harbouring multiple HPV genotypes.

  • While many studies on the heat transfer effect of an impinging jet have been published, most studies focus on the downward impinging jet. This study investigates the impinging jet heat transfer phenomenon when water at a temperature of $24^{\circ}C$ impinges on the downward isothermal circular plate at 60, 70, and $80^{\circ}C$ and when the upward round jet nozzle is 4, 6, and 8 mm diameter with a flow rate 3.6, 4.6, and 5.6 L/min, respectively, and when the ratio of the nozzle clearance/nozzle diameter (H/D) is 1. The results showed that, as the nozzle diameter decreases, the heat transfer coefficient increases at a constant flow rate. The correlation equation of $Nu_r$, $Pr_r$, and $Re_{jg}$ is obtained in the impinging and constant velocity flow region $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=4.6[Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr]^{0.8}$ at all flow rates, in the deceleration and falling flow regions $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=42.7{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-345.7{\mid}^{0.3}$ at 3.6 L/min, $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=92.4{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-16.8{\mid}^{0.2}$ at 4.6 L/min, and $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=322.4{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-536.2{\mid}^{0.01}$ at 5.6 L/min.

  • Purpose: To investigate the impact of omega-3-enriched lipid emulsion (LE) on liver enzyme (aspartate transaminase [AST] and alanine aminotransferase [ALT]) and triglyceride (TG) levels of children undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. Methods: This experimental randomized controlled group pretest-posttest design study included 14 children who underwent gastrointestinal surgery due to duodenal atresia, jejunal atresia, esophageal atresia, and need for parenteral nutrition for a minimum of 3 days at RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya between August 2018 and January 2019. These children were divided into two groups, those who received standard intravenous LE (medium-chain triglyceride [MCT]/long-chain triglyceride [LCT]) and those who received intravenous omega-3-enriched LE. Differences in AST, ALT, and TG levels were measured before surgery and 3 days after the administration of parenteral nutrition. Results: Liver enzyme and TG levels in each group did not differ significantly before versus 3 days after surgery. However, TG levels were significantly lower in the omega-3-enriched intravenous LE group (p=0.041) at 3 days after surgery, and statistically significant difference in changes in TG levels was noted at 3 days after surgery between MCT/LCT intravenous LE group and the omega-3-enriched intravenous LE group (p=0.008). Conclusion: The intravenous omega-3-enriched LE had a better TG-lowering effect than the MCT/LCT intravenous LE in children undergoing gastrointestinal surgery.

  • A convenient synthetic route has been developed to synthesize 5-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl) methoxy)phenyl)-3-(4-sustituted phenyl)pyrazolines (5a-f) and 5-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)phenyl)-3-(4-substituted phenyl)isoxazolines (6a-f) starting from 2-phenyl-4-chloromethylthiazole (1). The chloromethylthiazole (1) was first condensed with 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde (2) for obtaining 4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde (3). Claisen-Smidth condensation of 4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde (3) and acetophenones has been carried in alkaline alcohol and obtained 3-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)phenyl)-1-(4-substituted phenyl)prop-2-en-1-ones (4a-f). The cyclocondensation of 2-propen-1-ones has been first time carried separately with hydrazine hydrate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in aqueous micellar tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) medium for getting the titled heterocycles with good to excellent yields.

  • The HLA class II region encodes a series of polymorphic glycoproteins that form cell surface heterodimers each consisting of one $\alpha$ and one $\beta$ chain. Thess class II molecules are encoded by genes clustered within three loci. DP, DQ, and DR are functfonally implicated as regulatory signals in intercellular communication during the immune resposes. The phenotypic hallmark of the HLA complex is a high degree of structural and functional polymorphism. Detailed analysis. of such polymorphisms should aid in understanding the molecular basis for associations between HLA and diseases. We have used techniques of restriction enzyme fragment analysis by Southern blotting to investigate polymorphisms associated with DQ $\beta$ class II genes on haplotypes expressing the HLA-DR4 and -DQw3 specificities. The endonucleases Hind III and Bam HI were used to identify a specific DQ $\beta$ genomic polymorphism that precisely corrresponds with the reactivity of a monoclonal antibody A-10-83, previously shown to define a serologic split of DQw3. This study identifies two allelic DQ va. riants. DQw3.1 and DQw3.2. We used these specific genotypic markers to investigate the genomic basis of the association of DR4 with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus(IDDM) and seropositive juvenile rheumatoid arthritis(JRA). The DR4 positive IDDM demonstrate the predominant expression of DQw3.2 and the very rare expression of DQw3.l. However, in haplotype matched siblings from two IDDM families, all of the DR4 positive siblings display a IDDM-associated DQw3.2 allele. Thus, both affected and healthy individuals can carry the same haplotypes and genomic markers, demonstrating that thess specific allelic variants are genetic elements that indicate a increased risk of IDDM but are not in fact disease specific. We contrasted this result with a similar analysis of patients with another DR4-associated disease, JRA. In contrast to the preponderance of the DQw3.2 allele in IDDM, the JRA patients expressed either the DQw3.1 or the DQw3.2 allele and sometimes both, without apparent association with disease expession. The different genomic markers reported here within HLA-DQ region potentially an analysis of HLA-associated function and disease susceptibility.

  • This study was to investigated the effects of the bee venom on inhibition of cell growth via upregulation of death receptor expression in the A549 human lung cancer cells. Bee venom(1-5 ${\mu}g$/ml) inhibited the growth of A549 lung cancer cells by the induction of apoptotic cell death in a dose dependent manner. Consistent with apoptotic cell death, expression of TNFR1, Fas, death receptors(DR) 3, 4 and 6 was increased in the cells. Expression of DR downstream pro-apoptotic proteins including caspase-3, -9 and Bax was concomitantly increased, but the expression of Bcl-2, NF-${\kappa}B$ were inhibited by treatment with bee venom in A549 cells. Moreover, deletion of DR3, DR4 by small interfering RNA significantly reversed bee venom-induced cell growth inhibitory effect, whereas Apo3L strengthened anti-proliferative effect of bee venom through enhancement of DR3 expression. These results suggest that bee venom should exert anti-tumor effect through induction of apoptotic cell death in lung cancer cells via enhancement of death receptor expression, and that bee venom could be a promising agent for preventing and treating lung cancer.

Dr. Park was born in Seoul on 3 July 1903. He graduated Kyongseong dental medical school and studied at the pharmacology department achieving his M.D. In 1938, as the president representing the Hanseong dentists association equivalent to the Japanese dentists association, Dr. Park participated in various events. After liberation, Dr. Park tried his best to achieve Korean dental medical education as the pursuit of ideal ego with self-centered ego. He reorganized the Kyongseong dental medical school and incorporated it to the Seoul National University dental college. Even during the Korea war, Dr. Park still sincerely carried out his duties as the director of the Seoul National University dental medical college by recruiting university entrants and turned out graduates. In 1954, Dr. Park as the director of the Seoul National University dental medical college, he frontiered an opportunity to adapt the American dental medicine by sending school staffs to study overseas. On 25 June 1954, Dr. Park received 25 years of meritorius service award presented by Seoul National University Dental Medical College. Further, on 6 Aril 1954, Dr. Park became a member of an academic research committee. In April 1946, Dr. Park was elected as the president of the Chosun Dentists Association(Korean Dental Association). On 19 May 1947, Dr. Park was also appointed as the director of the Korea dental medicine association leading the general meetings and academic conferences from 2nd through the 8th sessions. On 30 November 1954, as the president of the Korea dental medicine association, Dr. Park also published the Korea dental association publications. In 1957, Dr. Park donated the school housing for the principle of the Kyongseong dental medical school establishing the basis for the Korea dentists association center. Dr. Park also participated in establishment of the oral hygiene campaigne, dental administration policy, organization of the specialized subject delegation board members and the dental materials association. On 10 December 1955, we can recognize Dr. Park's respective historical consciousness through his declaration 'history is a true record of historical traces of a national'. Dr. Park was a living witness of the Korean dental industry. Especially, he stated that the origin of the Korean dentists association was in the Hanseong dentists association. Dr. Park overcame the pressure and indignity during the Japanese colonization. The joy of liberation did not last long since he also had to experience the fraticidal tragedy of the Korea war. Dr. Park was a professional dental specialist and a leader researching dental medicine. He was a great leader who understood the dental medicine and dedicated for the dentist association and dental medicine association with compassion for the nation and national as a Korean.
