NOx, PN and CO emissions from diesel trucks make up a significant portion of domestic air pollutant emissions. Therefore, test vehicles with various emission standards and driving modes were selected to evaluate the emission characteristics of regulated pollutants (NOx, PN, CO) in medium-duty trucks. As a result of test, all test vehicles were satisfied with Euro 5 or 6 regulation. NOx emissions of Euro 6 vehicles with after-treatment of LNT + DPF were lower than those of Euro 5 vehicles with DPF. In WLTC mode, all vehicles have high NOx emissions at section of extra high speeds, which are determined by increased fuel consumption and high combustion temperatures. CO and PN emissions from all vehicles were found to be low at section of low speeds. Also, The NO2/NOx ratio was analyzed at 7-23% in each mode, and the NO2/NOx ratio increased as the average vehicle speed increased. In NIER 9 mode, the CO, HC, and PN emissions were higher under cold conditions of engine than hot conditions of engine. In addition, vehicles with after-treatment system of LNT have similar NOx emissions level in this study.
Emission characteristics of regulated (NOx, PM, CO, NMHC) and unregulated (VOCs, aldehydes, PAHs) air pollutants were investigated for diesel heavy duty buses equipped with different after-treatment systems (DPF+EGR and SCR) under urban driving cycle. The combustion temperature and the working temperature of SCR catalysts were important to make impact on NOx emissions, whereas PM emissions were low. The alkane groups dominated NMVOCs emissions, making 42.6~59.4% of sum of the NMVOCs emissions. Especially, alkane emissions of DPF+EGR-equipped vehicle included DOC had 14.9~15.5% higher than those of SCR-equipped vehicle due to low efficiency of oxidation catalyst. In the case of individual NMVOCs, n-nonane and propylene emissions highly occupied for DPF+EGR and SCR, respectively. Formaldehyde emissions among aldehydes were the highest and PAHs emissions were hardly detected except naphthalene and phenanthrene. The NMHC speciation has been shown to be the highest of the formaldehyde ranged 20.8~21.5%. The results of this study will be contributed to establish Korean HAPs emission inventory for automobile source.
The current emission regulations, US Tier-4 and EU Stage-V, are only able to satisfy the regulations when all currently mass-produced emission reduction technologies such as EGR, DOC, DPF, and SCR are applied. Therefore, in this study, for the application of the Urea-SCR system to non-road diesel engines, the database was established by measuring the NO, NO2 concentration and calculating the NO2/NOx ratio based on the catalyst temperature and exhaust mass flow rate. Also, based on the measured NO2/NOx ratio data, a mathematical model was proposed to predict the NO2/NOx ratio at SCR catalyst, and the suitability of the model was verified through steady-state and transient mode. As a result of comparing the NO2/NOx ratio measured at the DOC outlet under the steady-state condition to two model values separately, the R2 was 0.9811 for the 3D map model and 0.9303 for the mathematical model. And in the case of the NO2/NOx ratio measured at the DPF outlet, the R2 was 0.9797 for the 3D map model and 0.935 for the mathematical model. It was confirmed that the R2 with the model value of the 3D Map of the mathematical model in the transient mode is 0.957, which shows high reliability.
Cars are one of the main causes of air pollution in large cities, and 34.6% of domestic air pollution emissions come from mobile sources, of which cars account for 69.6%. In particular, the importance of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), which are major pollutants in diesel vehicles, is increasing due to their high contribution to emissions. Therefore, in this study, the problem of natural regeneration caused by low exhaust gas temperature during low speed and low load operation was solved by applying a complex regeneration DPF that is not affected by temperature conditions to large diesel vehicles with higher driving time and engine displacement than small and medium-sized vehicles. And the feasibility of application to large diesel vehicles was reviewed by measuring the emission reduction efficiency. As a result of the reduction efficiency test on the actual vehicle durability product, PM showed a reduction efficiency of 84% to 86%, and the reduction efficiency of gaseous substances showed a high reduction efficiency of over 90%. The actual vehicle applicability test was completed with three driving patterns: village bus vehicle, police car, and road-going construction equipment vehicle, and no device problems occurred until the end of the test. Both load and no-load smoke measurement results showed a smoke reduction efficiency of over 96%.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by chronic relapsing inflammation and is associated with hyper-production of immunoglobulin E (IgE). Recent studies have suggested that one of the treatments to alleviate symptoms of AD could be a supplementation of probiotics, Lactobacillus, Rhamnosus, Bifidus, etc. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of probiotics on immune parameters in NC/Nga mice treated with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitro-benzene (DNCB). To induce atopic dermatitis, DNCB was treated to the back of mice for 2 weeks. Then, NC/Nga mice were divided into the four experimental groups randomly. Probiotics fragment, probiotics with other complex (Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium lactis Bb-12LbL, L. plantarum K8, L. plantarum K8 fragment, ${\gamma}$-linolenic acid), antihistamine, and distilled water were administrated orally to the NC/Nga mouse for 4 weeks of experimental period. The groups were probiotics fragment group (DPF), probiotics with other complex group (DPOC), antihistamine group (DAH) and distilled water group (DDW) as a control group. The levels of serum IgE, interlukin-4 (IL-4), interlukin-5 (IL-5), interferon-gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$) and spleenocyte IgE were measured. The levels of serum IgE were significantly different among the four experimental groups. Before the treatment, there was no differences among the groups. However, from the first through the third week of the treatments, the levels of serum IgE in the probiotics (DPF, DPOC) and antihistamine (DAH) groups were lower than those of control group (p < 0.05). The levels of serum IL-4 of DPOC group was significantly lower than that of control group (p < 0.05) and serum IL-5 levels of DPF, DPOC, and DAH groups were significantly lower than that of control group. The levels of serum IFN-${\gamma}$ were not different among the four experimental groups. The levels of serum IgE in supernatant of spleen lymphocytes were not significantly different among the groups. These results suggest that probiotics supplementation showed partial effectiveness in the DNCB treated NC/Nga mice via modulation of IgE level and IL-4, IL-5 production. Based on these findings, probiotics exhibited the inhibitory effect via IL-4 production thereby inhibited the production of IgE in atopic animal model NC/Nga mice.
As air pollution becomes more serious due to the increased number of diesel vessel operations, ship regulations on harmful emissions strengthen. Therefore, the development of a diesel exhaust after-treatment system for ships is required, and the higher the flow uniformity of the exhaust treatment system, the higher the treatment efficiency. With the computer software ANSYS Fluent, pressure drop and flow uniformity were used in this study to simulate flow rate with and without a baffle in both a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system. The system pressure drop was found to be 38 to 40 mbar in the existing system condition, and the flow uniformity was approximately 84 to 92% at the inlet and outlet of the DOC. When the baffle was installed inside the system, the pressure increased and the flow uniformity was lowered due to an increase in flow rate. When the exhaust gas flow was reduced by 50% from $7,548kg\;h^{-1}$ to $3,772kg\;h^{-1}$, the flow uniformity at the inlet and outlet of the DOC increased by approximately 1 to 3% due to the low flow rate. In the case of DPF, the flow uniformity of exhaust gas was 98 to 99% because the uneven flow proceeded after uniformly flowing from the DOC.

PET microfibers with various diameters (0.5, 0.2, 0.06, and 0.01 dpf) were dyed with a dispersed dye (C.I. Disperse Blue 56) at various temperatures. The dyeing process was conducted under infinite dyebath conditions at constant temperatures. The effects of the dyeing temperature and diameter on the partition coefficient, affinity, and diffusion coefficient of disperse dyes were studied. The curve of isotherms was fitted well to Nernst-type model in a large range of initial dye concentrations. At the same temperature, the partition coefficient and affinity decreased with increasing sample diameter due to the increase in surface area. At all deniers, the partition coefficient and affinity decreased with increasing temperature because the dyeing process is an exothermic reaction. In addition, the decrease in radius of the sample gives rise to a decrease in the heat of dyeing. The fine diameter of the sample resulted in an increased surface area but decreased space between the microfibers. Consequently, decreasing the diameter of the microfibers leads to a decrease in the diffusion coefficient. At the same diameter, the diffusion coefficient increased with increasing temperature because of rapid dye movement and the large free volume of the sample inside. In addition, thermal dependence of the diffusion coefficient increased when the diameter of the sample increased.
This work reviews the effects of catalyst formulation and exhaust gas composition on soot oxidation in CDPF (Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filter). DOC's (Diesel Oxidation Catalysts) have been loaded with Pt catalyst (Pt/$Al_{2}O_3$) for reduction of HC and CO. Recent CDPF's are coated with the Pt catalyst as well as additives like Mo, V, Ce, Co, Fe, La, Au, or Zr for the promotion of soot oxidation. Alkali (K, Na, Cs, Li) doping of metal catalyst tends to increase the activity of the catalysts in soot combustion. Effects of coexistence components are very important in the catalytic reaction of the soot. The soot oxidation rate of a few catalysts are improved by water vapor and NOx in the ambient. There are only a few reports available on the mechanism of the PM (particulate matter) oxidation on the catalysts. The mechanism of PM oxidation in the catalytic systems that meet new emission regulations of diesel engines has yet to be investigated. Future research will focus on catalysts that can not only oxidize PM at low temperature, but also reduce NOx, continuously self-cleaning diesel particulate filters, and selective catalysts for NOx reduction.
SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) on DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a multi-functional after-treatment device which integrates soot filtration and DeNOx function into a single can. Because of its advantage in package and cost, the SCR on DPF is considered as a potential candidate for future application. It inherently employes wall flow type monolithic reactor so ash included in exhaust gas may deposit inside the inlet channel of this device. This study is intended to identify the impact of ash deposit on SCR reaction under wall flow type monolithic reactor. Simulation approach is used so relevant species transport equations for wall flow type monolith is derived. These equations can be solved together with momentum conservation equations and give solution for conversion performance. Both ash deposit and clean catalyst case are simulated and comparison of these two cases gives an insight for the impact of ash deposit on conversion performance. Ash deposit can be classified as ash layer and ash plug. and impact of ash deposit is described along with different morphology of ash deposit.
