  • A DPCM system employing a median predictor, which is called the predictive median-DPCM(PM-DPCM), is proposed. An interesting observation that in PM-DPCM transmission errors are often isolated and not propagated over the reconstructed signal is made, and is analyzed deterministically and statistically. In addition, it is shown that the decoder of the PM-DPCM is always a stable system. In addition, it is shown that the decoder of the PM-DPCM is always a stable system. In order to examine the performance characteristics of PM-DPCM, it is applied to real images. The results indicate that reconstructed images through the PM-DPCM can be better than those through thestandadrd DPCM when transmission errors occur, and that under noise-free conditions the PM-DPCM performs like the standard DPCM.

  • The runlength coding algorithm widely used for graphic data compression is extended for multi-level general images. It is applied to the quantized prediction error signal obtained by a simple predictor and quantizer. It is shown that this DPCM/RLC algorithm of a modest complexity performs much better than the conventional discrete consine transform and DPCM methods.

  • In this paper, we employed a new quantization scheme called sample-adaptive product quantizer (SAPQ) to quantize image data based on the differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) coder, which has fixed length outputs and high bit rates. In order to improve the performance of traditional DPCM coders, the scalar quantizer should be replaced by the vector quantizer (VQ). As the bit rate increases, it will be nearly impossible to implement a conventional VQ or modified VQ, such as the tree-structured VQ, even if the modified VQ can significantly reduce the encoding complexity. SAPQ has a form of the feed-forward adaptive scalar quantizer having a short adaptation period. However, since SAPQ is a structurally constrained VQ, SAPQ can achieve VQ-level performance with a low encoding complexity. Since SAPQ has a scalar quantizer structure, by using the traditional scalar value predictors, we can easily apply SAPQ to DPCM coders. For synthetic data and real images, by employing SAPQ as the quantizer part of DPCM coders, we obtained a 2~3 dB improvement over the DPCM coders, which are based on the Lloyd-Max scalar quantizers, for data rates above 4 b/point.

  • In this paper, we propose a lossless compression algorithm using adaptive DPCM(Differential Pulse Coded Modulation) for enhancing the compression ratio. To improve the compression efficiency, various DPCM modification algorithms have been proposed. Proposed algorithm presents 16 DPCM methods and adaptively selects the DPCM method for each block. The experimental results show that proposed DPCM algorithm has better performance on compression ratio than JPEG standard.

  • This paper describes various mismatch phenomena in differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) coding, such as the mismatch effects of probability density functin(pdf), signal variance, and correlation. At a high transmission rate(i.e., above 32 kbits/s), the performance of DPCM can be improved by matching the pdf shape between the input signal and the quantizer. However, the same gain cannot be obtained at a lower transmission rate. Also, it is shown that the gamma quantizer is realtively robust to the variation of pdf shaper and signal variance. Moreover, as the transmission rate increases, the performance of DPCM for the input signal with large variance is worse than that of DPCM for the signal with small variance due to the increase of overload noise. According to our simuladiton results, the mismatch effects of pdf shape and variance appear to yield more degradatin than that of correlation in a DPCM system.

  • In transmission of DPCM signals, it is desired to protect the more significant digits from more errors than the less significant digits. The SNR of DPCM is examined in the case that bit error rates of individual digits consisting of the information word are different each other. The examination shows a better DPCM coding.

  • The dual potential capacity model (DPCM) was extended to be suitable for evaluation of the shear strength of prestressed concrete (PSC) members in the previous study. This paper aims to simplify the DPCM for its better application in practice. To this end, a total of 172 shear test results of PSC members without shear reinforcement were collected from existing studies. The collected shear test results include PSC members with various section types and prestressing methods. It appeared that the simplified model could provide a good level of estimation accuracy of shear strength of PSC members, and it was comparable with that provided from the original DPCM.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid image coding in order to improve the coding performance by combining the BTC with the DPCM. And utilizing the human perceptual characteristics, a new objective image quality evaluation method has been proposed to obtain an excellent result in good agreement with the subjective quality evaluation. A hyb-1 method consisting of the DPCM and the AMBTC has retained a good picture quality at the bit rate of 1.5 bits/pel. A hyb-3 method combining the EBTC-3 with the DPCM has scarcely degraded the picture quality compared with the original image at the bit rate of 2.1 bits/pel. A newly proposed mehtod of picture quality evaluation accumulating a blocky noise at the edge block and an impulsive noise at the flat block selectively has been coincident with the subjective evaluation of quality.

  • A new modified lossless intra-coding method based on a cross residual transform is applied to HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding). The HEVC standard including a multi-directional spatial prediction method to reduce spatial redundancy encodes the pixels in a PU (Prediction Unit) by using neighboring pixels. In the new modified lossless intra-coding method, the spatial prediction is performed by pixel-based DPCM but is implemented by block-based manner by using cross residual transform on the HEVC standard. The experimental results show that the new lossless intra-coding method reduces the bit rate of approximately 8.4% in comparison with the lossless-intra coding method in the HEVC standard and the proposed method results in slightly better compression ratio than the JPEG2000 lossless coding.
