The small punch(SP) tests that can be applied to high strength sheet steel in automobile were carried out to evaluate the behavior of hydrogen embrittlement of DP sheet steels. In order to charge hydrogen at DP sheet steels, DP sheet steels were treated by the electrochemical hydrogen charging method under the charging conditions of current densities of 100, 150 and 200 $mA/cm^2$ for charging times of 5, 10, 25 and 50 hrs. Respectively, After hydrogen charging with experimental conditions, SP tests were performed. From the SP results, the correlations between the variation of bulb diameters and bulb heights with the hydrogen charging conditions were analysed. It was shown that the variation of bulb diameters were not significant with the hydrogen embrittlement due to the amounts of hydrogen charging. On the other hand, the bulb heights were observed to decrease with increasing hydrogen contents. It was thought that these results of the variation of bulb shapes after SP tests would be estimated as the index of evaluation of hydrogen embrittlement.
According to the lack of resources and the stringency of environmental regulations, a study of the high strength thin plate sheet steels for automobile have been become an important issue for automobile industry. However, the problem of hydrogen embrittlement of high strength sheet steels was concerned with the degradation of mechanical properties. Therefore, we studied the hydrogen behavior of surface layers of 590MPa DP sheet steels on development using by relationship the microstructure of subsurface and the distribution of micro hardnesses. Hydrogen was charged into the specimens using by the cathodic electrolytic method. The behavors of under surface layers were investigated by the observation of microstructures and the micro vickers hardness test with the amount of hydrogen charging with hydrogen charging conditions.
High strength sheet steels for automobile are seriously compromised by hydrogen embrittlement. This issue has been continuously studied, but the field of interest, which lies between microstructural characteristics and hydrogen behavior with hydrogen charging, has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This study was done to investigate the behavior of hydrogen according to the hydrogen volume fraction on 590MPa grade DP steels, which are developed under hydrogen charging conditions as high strength sheet steels for automobiles. The penetration depths and the mechanical properties, according to charging conditions, were investigated through the distribution of micro-hardness and the microstructural observation of the subsurface zone. It was found that the amount of hydrogen trapping in 590MPa DP steels was related to the austenite volume fraction. It was confirmed that the distribution of micro-hardnesses according to the depth of the subsurface zone under the free surface showed the relationship of the depth of the hydrogen saturation between the charging conditions.
The major purpose of the present study is to evaluate the performance of various galvanized (GI) or galvannealed (GA) mild steels and AHSS in stamping applications. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of selected stamping operations was conducted to estimate the critical pressure boundary conditions that exist in practice. Using this information, laboratory tribotests, e.g. Twist Compression (TCT), Deep Drawing (DDT) and Strip Drawing (SDT) Tests, were developed to evaluate the performance of selected lubricants and die materials/coatings in forming galvanized steels of interest. The sheet materials investigated included mild steels and AHSS (e.g. DP600 GI/GA, DP780 GI/GA, TRIP780 GA and DP980 GI/GA). Experimental results showed that galvanized material resulted in more galling, while galvannealed material showed more powdering and flaking. The surface roughness and chemical composition of galvanized sheet materials affected the severity of galling under the same testing conditions, i.e. lubricants and die materials/coatings. The results of this study helped to determine the critical interface pressure that initiates lubricant failure and galling in stamping selected galvanized sheet materials. Thus, to prevent or postpone the critical interface conditions, the results of this study can be used to select the optimum combination of galvanized sheet, die material, die coating and lubricant for forming structural automotive components.
Nowadays, car manufacturers tried to improve automotive fuel efficiency, and applied many high strength steels such as AHSS or UHSS to car bodies. Therefore, the number of steel combinations for the resistance spot welding are dramatically increased and the need for weldability evaluation of these combinations are also required. In this study, we suggest the lobe curve using FEM simulations for DP780 steel with 1.0t, 1.4t. The lobe curves which could expressed weldablity and optimal welding condition were obtained according to 6 steel combinations. There were two combinations for same steel sheet which were DP780 1.0t, DP780 1.4t. Dissimilar steel sheet combination with different thickness was 1.0t and 1.4t of DP780. Different steel combinations were DP780 1.0t and SPRC440 1.0t, and DP780 1.0t and DP590 1.0t. Finally dissimilar combinations was and DP780 1.0t and DP590 1.4t. The trend of low boundary and high boundary variation of lobe curve were analyzed with a viewpoint of the contact resistance and the heat input.

The laser welding and its analysis were carried out using high power 6kW $CO_2$ laser for high strength steels such as DP, TRIP and conventional high strength steels. Bead on plate welding of thin sheet was examined to investigate the effect of weld variables of laser welding, and to obtain optimum welding condition. In order to investigate the formability of welded high strength steels, LDH test was added on this work. At high welding speed, the partial penetration was obtained by low heat input. Meanwhile, porosity was formed in the bead at low weld speed because of extremely higher heat input. The optimum welding condition of welding was derived from bead width, penetration and hardness property. It was shown that the DP steels had lower porosity level and smooth bead shape, therefore better laser weldability than TRIP steels and conventional high strength steels. In addition, LDH test shows that the welded DP steels have about $90\%$ formability value of base metal, although TRIP steel and conventional high strength steels have about $80\%$ formability value of its base metal.

Hydrogen charging was electrochemically conducted at high strength DP steels and TRIP steel with varying charging time. The penetration depths and the mechanical properties with charging conditions were investigated through the distribution of micro-hardness and the microstructural observation of the subsurface zone. The micro-Vickers hardness was measured to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement of subsurface zone in addition to the microscope investigation. It was shown that the hydrogen amounts decreased in DP steels and TRIP steel with increasing hydrogen charging time. As shown by micro-Vickers hardness test and small punch test results, micro-Vickers hardness and SP energy for DP steels and TRIP steel decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time, for constant value of charging current density. SEM investigation results for the hydrogen contained samples showed that the major fracture behavior was brittle fracture which results in dimples on fractured surface and the size of dimples were decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time. These results indicate that hydrogen embrittlement is the major cause for the fracture of high strength steels and also micro-Vickers hardness test and small punch test is a valuable test method for hydrogen embrittlement of high strength sheet steels.
Sheet metal forming processes induce residual stress in the final product due to plastic deformation. The residual stress leads to elastic recovery of the formed part called springback, which causes shape errors in the final product. This error is a serious issue, especially for high strength steels, which are widely used in auto-body structures. Therefore, the evaluation of the amount of springback becomes critical for high strength steels. This paper investigates the springback behavior of DP780 steel sheets after the U-bending process using the geometry of the standard U-shape tool from the NUMISHEET'93 benchmark problem. The amounts of springback were measured as a function of the intrusion direction, forming speed and blank holding force.
The current study is concerned with the prediction of fracture strains for DP980 steel sheets over a wide range of loading paths. The use of DP980 steel is increasing significantly in automotive industries for enhanced safety and higher fuel efficiency. The material behavior of advanced high-strength steels (AHSSs) sheets sometimes show unpredictable and sudden fracture during sheet metal forming. A modified Lou-Huh ductile fracture criterion is utilized to predict the formability of AHSSs because the conventional forming limit diagram (FLD) constructed based on necking is unable to evaluate the formability of AHSSs sheets. Fracture loci were extracted from three dimensional fracture envelopes by assuming the plane-stress condition to evaluate equivalent plastic strains at the onset of fracture for a wide range of loading paths. Three different types of specimens -- pure shear, dog-bone and plane strain grooved -- were utilized for tensile testing to calibrate the fracture model of DP980 steel sheets. Fracture strains of each loading path were evaluated such that there shows little deviation between fracture strains predicted from the fracture model and the experimental measurements. From the comparison, it is clearly shown that the three dimensional fracture envelopes can accurately predict the onset of the fracture of DP980 steel sheets for complicated loading conditions from compressive loading to shear loading and to equibiaxial tensile loading.

Recently high strength steel sheets with high formability for automotive parts have been being developed to meet the demands for passenger safety and weight reduction of car body. Among these high strength steels, dual-phase steels are regarded as one of the attractive steels due to their excellent mechanical properties including high strength and ductility. However, to be successfully applied to automotive parts they should be corrosion resistant enough to satisfy the required quality of car maker. This also requires their feasibility for galvannealed production including hot dip galvanizability. In this study has been placed on understanding the effects of heat-treatment(austenizing and isothermal treatment) on the microstructures and mechanical properties of a 0.06C-0.03Si-2.0Mn high strength steel for cold forming. The microstructure and phase distribution were examined with eth aids of SEM, EBSD, TEM etc.. Through the study the production of 590MPa grade DP GA steels with good formability and galvaniability were shown to be possible.
