Over the recent years, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has dramatically grown as a label-free detecting technique with the high level of selectivity and sensitivity. Conventional SERS-active nanostructured layers have been deposited or patterned on rigid substrates such as silicon wafers and glass slides. Such devices fabricated on a flexible platform may offer additional functionalities and potential applications. For example, flexible SERS-active substrates can be integrated into microfluidic diagnostic devices with round-shaped micro-channel, which has large surface area compared to the area of flat SERS-active substrates so that we may anticipate high sensitivity in a conformable device form. We demonstrate fabrication of flexible SERS-active nanostructured substrates based on soft-lithography for simple, low-cost processing. The SERS-active nanostructured substrates are fabricated using conventional Si fabrication process and inkjet printing methods. A Si mold is patterned by photolithography with an average height of 700 nm and an average pitch of 200 nm. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a mixture of Sylgard 184 elastomer and curing agnet (wt/wt = 10:1), is poured onto the mold that is coated with trichlorosilane for separating the PDMS easily from the mold. Then, the nano-pattern is transferred to the thin PDMS substrates. The soft lithographic methods enable the SERS-active nanostructured substrates to be repeatedly replicated. Silver layer is physically deposited on the PDMS. Then, gold nanoparticle (AuNP) inks are applied on the nanostructured PDMS using inkjet printer (Dimatix DMP 2831) to deposit AuNPs on the substrates. The characteristics of SERS-active substrates are measured; topology is provided by atomic force microscope (AFM, Park Systems XE-100) and Raman spectra are collected by Raman spectroscopy (Horiba LabRAM ARAMIS Spectrometer). We anticipate that the results may open up various possibilities of applying flexible platform to highly sensitive Raman detection.
Objectives : Recently, people who have normal brachial blood pressure(BP) are being threatened by high-risk disease such as stroke. The aim of this study is to suggest that new method to assess systemic circulation. It can be performed by analyzing optimal blood pulse wave on 3 sites belonging to subjects that have normal BP. Methods : We respectively extracted main peaks(h1) of optimal blood pulse wave on left/right temporal artery(LR1=h1), radial artery(LR2=h1) and dorsalis pedis artery(LR3=h1). We obtained h1 from 30 subjects who are discreetly chosen and have normal BP. Main peak(h1) can be extracted by using 3D pulse imaging analyser(DMP-1000+, DAEYOMEDI Co., Korea) that has 5-level pressure method. We analyzed the ratio of [LR1/LR2] and [LR3/LR2]. Results : In the case of male group, the results are [LR1/LR2=0.7100.177] and [LR3/LR2=0.9290.317]. In the case of female group, the results are [LR1/LR2=0.6680.121] and [LR3/LR2=0.7050.195]. Especially, it is statistically verified that the result of ratio [LR3/LR2] is much higher in male group than in female group(p<0.05). Conclusions : We suggested the standard ratio of [LR1/LR2] and [LR3/LR2] for normal subjects, respectively. It can be adopted as a new method to evaluate the systemic circulation.

Unique virus-like particles were associated with five eriophyid mite-borne plant diseases of unknown etiology; fig mosaic, redbud yellow ringspot, rose orsette, thistle mosaic, and high plains disease of corn and wheat. Quasi-spherical, double membrane-bound particles (DMPs), 120 - 200 nm in diameter, were observed in the cytoplasm of all cell types in symptomatic leaves of infected plants. No DMPs were observed in symptomless plants. The DMPs in symptomatic thistles were associated with two types of inclusions, electron-dense amorphous material and tubular aggregates. Similar amorphous inclusions were also found in corn and wheat with high plains disease, while tubular inclusions were observed in figs with mosaic symptoms. The particles and inclusions were similar in some aspects to immature particles associated with viroplasms of animal and insect poxviruses and also to the double-enveloped particles of tomato spotted wilt virus associated with viroplasms during early stages of infection, but were unique and unlike any known plant viruses. The DMPs and associated viroplasm-like inclusions in the high plains disease were specifically immunogold labeled in situ with the disease-specific antiserum. Thread-like structures, similar to tenuivirus particles, present in the partially purified virus preparations were also immunogold labeled with the antiserum. It is suggested that the thread-like structures are derived from the DMP. In many cells of symptomatic corn and wheat samples, DMPs occurred together with flexuous rod-shaped particles and cylindrical inclusions of wheat streak mosaic potyvirus (WSMV), suggesting that the disease is caused by a mixed infection of WSMV and the agent represented by the DMPs. Based on cytopathology, symptomatology and mite and/or graft-transmissibility, the five diseases described in this paper are potentially caused by virus(es) and the DMPs associated with these diseases may represent virus particles. If the DMPs are indeed viral in nature, they would comprise a new group of plant viruses.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find parameters to compare the effects of Sa-Am acupuncture with stomach-tonification (ST) and Sa-Am acupuncture with spleen-tonification (SP) on radial pulse. Methods : Forty healthy subjects participated in this study. Radial pulse was measured using 3 dimensional pulse imaging system (DMP-3000) before, right after, 30 minutes after, and 60 minutes after acupuncture. Results : 1. The parameters analysed in this study were changed in the same direction with different degrees by ST and SP. 2. In males, SP manipulation showed significantly increased pulse period and (T-T4)/T, and significantly decreased T1/T, T4/T, T4/(T-T4), and F1~F3 frequencies compared to ST. 3. In females, ST manipulation showed significantly increased (T-T4)/T, and significantly decreased F1~F3 frequencies compared to SP. Conclusions : The parameters analysed in this study may be used to differentiate the effects between ST and SP on radial pulse. These parameters are more strongly affected by SP than ST in males whereas more strongly affected by ST than SP in females.
Sapphire is currently used as a substrate material for blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The market for sapphire substrates has expanded rapidly as the use of LEDs has extended into various industries. However, sapphire is classified as one of the most difficult materials to machine due to its hardness and brittleness. Recently, a lap-grinding process has been developed to combine the lapping and diamond mechanical polishing (DMP) steps in a single process. This paper studies, the effect of wafer surface roughness on the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process by pressure and abrasive concentration in the lap-grinding process of a sapphire wafer. In this experiment, the surface roughness of a sapphire wafer is measured after lap-grinding by varying the pressure and abrasive concentration of the slurry. CMP is carried out under pressure conditions of 4.27 psi, a plate rotation speed of 103 rpm, head rotation speed of 97 rpm, and slurry flow rate of 170 ml/min. The abrasive concentration of the CMP slurry was 20wt, implying that the higher the surface roughness after lapgrinding, the higher the material removal rate (MRR) in the CMP. This is likely due to the real contact area and actual contact pressure between the rough wafer and polishing pad during the CMP. In addition, wafers with low surface roughness after lap-grinding show lower surface roughness values in CMP processes than wafers with high surface roughness values; therefore, further research is needed to obtain sufficient surface roughness before performing CMP processes.

There were not many ways to share research data in the past, but modern information technology has allowed us to share these data. As data sharing has its side effects, researchers' attitude and practice to sharing data vary by individual discipline. This study found that foreign learned societies, NGOs, universities and research funders support data sharing in a utilitarian perspective, while major publishers demand it so that other researchers can verify the data in peer review. It is important that open data policy should be settled down in near future for evoking further studies and encouraging progress in science. In order to establish data sharing successfully in Korea, efforts could be made by researchers, universities, academic libraries, and governments as well as the stakeholder. This study also proposed specific ways to perform it.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Sa-am acupuncture with Pericardium jung-gyuck (SA-acu-PC) and Triple Energizer jung-gyuck (SA-acu-TE) on the radial pulse in healthy human subjects. Methods: Sixty healthy subjects participated in this study and divided into three groups randomly: Control group(C), Pericardium jung-gyuck group(PC), Triple Energizer jung-gyuck group(TE). Radial pulse was measured by 3 dimensional pulse imaging system (DMP-3000) before, right after, 30 minutes after, and 60 minutes after acupuncture. Results: 1. The changes observed in periodic parameters are considered as the common effects of both SA-acu-TE and SA-acu-PC. SA-acu-TE was more effective than SA-acu-PC in these effects. 2. The effects of SA-acu-PC appeared in the pulse amplitude, pulse area, and pulse power volume mainly at the left chon position, and 3. The effects of SA-acu-TE appeared in the radial augmentation index and main peak angle mainly at the right gwan position. Conclusions: The effects of SA-acu-PC and SA-acu-TE can be observed in the radial pulse. The increases in pulse amplitude, pulse area, and pulse power volume at the left chon may imply the effects of SA-acu-PC. And the decrease in the pulse power volume, the increases in radial augmentation index and main peak angle may imply the effects of SA-acu-TE.
Oocyte freezing has become a prevalent source for related reproductive technologies. This study was carried out to evaluate viability of post-thawed bovine oocyte injected DTT-treated sperm following by two different activation stimuli (Group 1, 5 M ionomycin, 5 min + CR1aa, 3 h . 1.9 mM dimetylaminopurine (DMP), 3 h; group 2, ionomycin + 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ cycloheximide(CHX), 5h). The techniques of ultra-rapid freezing used in this study were essentially similar to those of described by Vajta et al (Theriogenology 1999; 52:939-948), Denuded oocytes at 22 h of culture were exposed to cryoprotectant (3.2 M Ethylene glycol, 2.36 M DMSO, 0.6 M sucrose), and followed by freezing in electron microscopic grid. After thawing the oocytes were transferred back into the drop of maturation medium and cultured for additional 2 h before being subjected to ICSI. All eggs were then cultured in CRlaa medium, and transferred into M199+10% FCS on day 4. The culture was maintained until day 9. In Experiment 1, frozen-ICSI eggs were compared on development into blastocyst to those of unfrozen and IVF control. Those eggs were activated with the method of group 2. A higher proportion of unfrozen-ICSI and IVF eggs developed into cleavage and blastocysts than of frozen-ICSI eggs (65% and 13%; 71% and 23% vs. 39% and 8%; P<0.05). In Experiment 2, development and ploidy of embryos made from group 1 were compared to those from group 2. Between groups there did not differ on the rates of development, however, chromosomal abnormality in group 1 was significantly higher than in group 2 (49% vs. 30%; P<0.05). The present result suggests that frozen bovine oocytes can be used for ICSI.

A Transient Differential Mobility Particle Spectrometer (TR-DMPS) with a short response time was recently developed to monitor high concentration of ultrafine particles emitted from vehicles. To investigate the availability of the TR-DMPS for monitoring transient roadside aerosols, the number size distribution of ultrafine particles was monitored at the Cheongnyangni roadside in Seoul on March 23, 2007 together with a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). The roadside aerosols were monitored every 5 min and 0.1 sec by using the SMPS and the TR-DMPS, respectively. The concentration of ultrafine particles at the roadside was highly fluctuated for a short duration. From the comparison of particle number concentrations and size distributions between two instruments, it was confirmed that the SMPS provided fairly good time-averaged number size distribution although it did not follow rapid change of particle number concentration at the roadside. The TR-DMPS quickly responded to a rapid change of particle number concentration due to abrupt traffic flow. However, the TR-DMPS frequently showed electrical noise events, resulting in underestimated particle contamination. A more stable operation of the TR-DMPS is needed in application of roadside aerosol monitoring.

Pseudomonas sp. S-47 is capable of degrading benzoate and 4-chlorobenzoate as well as catechol and 4-chlorocatechol via the meta-cleavage pathway. The three enzymes of 2-oxopenta-4-enoate hydratase (OEH), acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (acylating) (ADA), and 2-oxo-4-hydroxypentonate aldolase (HOA) encoded by xylJQK genes are responsible for the three steps after the meta-cleavage of catechol. The nucleotide sequence of the xylJQK genes located in the chromosomal DNA was cloned and analyzed. GC content of xylJ, xylQ, and xylK was 65% and consisted of 786, 924, and 1,041 nucleotides, respectively. The deduced amino acid sequences of xylJ, xylQ, and xylK genes from Pseudomonas sp. S-47 showed 93%, 99%, and 99% identity, compared with those of nahT, nahH, and nahI in Pseudomonas stutzeri An10. However, there were only about 53% to 85% identity with xylJQK of Pseudomonas putida mt-2, dmpEFG of P. putida CF600, aphEFG of Comamonas testosteroni TA441, and ipbEGF of P. putida RE204. On the other hand, the xylLTEGF genes located upstream of xylJQK in the strain S-47 showed high homology with those of TOL plasmid from Pseudomonas putida mt-2. These findings suggested that the xylLTEGFIJQK of Pseudomonas sp. S-47 responsible for complete degradation of benzoate and then catechol via the meta-pathway were phylogenetically recombinated from the genes of Pseudomonas putida mt-2 and Pseudomonas stutzeri An10.
