  • Recently, with the world-wide issues about global warming and CO2 reduction, a number of distributed generations(DGs) such as photovoltaic(PV) and wind power(WP), are interconnected with the distribution systems. However, DGs can change the direction of the power flow from one-direction to bi-direction, and also change the direction and amount of fault current of existing distribution systems. Therefore, it may cause the critical problems on the power quality and protection coordination. This paper proposes an operation algorithm for bi-directional protection coordination using and apply it for the evaluation system for protection coordination. From the simulation results It is found that the proposed method is more effective and convenient than existing method.

  • In the face of global warming and resource depletion, a smart grid has been suggested as one way of contributing to abating the environment problems and increasing energy efficiency. Smart grids utilize renewable energy which has intermittent and irregular output power depending on weather conditions. In order to maintain stability and reliability of the power system, smart grids need to have complementary measures for the possible unstable system conditions. Cogenerating systems such as Combined Heat and Power(CHP) can be one good solution as it has capability of instantly increasing or decreasing output power. Therefore, this paper investigates the connectivity between Combined Heat and Power systems and smart grid technologies. The smart grid national roadmap formulated by South Korea Ministry of Knowledge and Economy and 'IEC Smart Grid Standardization Roadmap' are analyzed to extract related components of the smart grid for the CHP connection. Also, case studies on demonstration projects for smart grids with CHP systems completed or currently being implementing in the world are presented.

  • This paper investigates the droop control-based real and reactive power load sharing with a virtual inductor when the line impedance between inverter and Point of Common Coupling (PCC) is partly and unequally resistive in high-capacity systems. In this paper, the virtual inductor method is applied to parallel inverter systems with resistive and inductive line impedance. Reactive power sharing error has been improved by applying droop control after considering each line impedance voltage drop. However, in high capacity parallel systems with large output current, the reference output voltage, which is the output of droop controller, becomes lower than the rated value because of the high voltage drop from virtual inductance. Hence, line impedance voltage drop has been added to the droop equation so that parallel inverters operate within the range of rated output voltage. Additionally, the virtual inductor value has been selected via small signal modeling to analyze stability in transient conditions. Finally, the proposed droop method has been verified by MATLAB and PSIM simulation.

  • This paper analyze the bus voltage sags in the power distribution system with a small scale cogeneration system when the superconducting fault current limiter was introduced. Among the solutions to decrease the short-circuit current considering the locations of the small scale cogeneration system, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been announced as one of the promising methods to reduce the fault current because the installation of the small scale cogeneration system which increases the short-circuit current. According to the application locations of the small scale cogeneration system in a power distribution system, it has caused the variations of voltage sag and duration which depends on the change of the short-circuit current, which can make the operation of the protective device deviate from its original set value when the fault occurs. To investigate the voltage sag when a SFCL was applied into a power distribution system where the small scale cogeneration system was introduced into various locations, the SFCL, small scale cogeneration system, and power system are modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC. In this paper, the effects on voltage sags are assessed when the SFCL is installed in power distribution system with various locations of the small scale cogeneration system.

  • As electric power demand of customers is constantly increasing, more bulk power systems are needed to install in a network. By development of renewable energies and high-efficient facilities and deregulated electricity market, moreover, the amount of distributed resource is considerably increasing in distribution network consequently. Also, distribution network has become more and more complex as mesh network to improve the distribution system reliability and increase the flexibility and agility of network operation. These changes make fault current increase. Therefore, the fault current will exceed a circuit breaker capacity. In order to solve this problem, replacing breaker, changing operation mode of system and rectifying transformer parameters can be taken into account. The SFCL(Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) is one of the most promising power apparatus. This paper proposes a methodology for on optimal location of SFCL. This place is defined as considering the decrement of fault current by component type and the increment of reliability by customer type according to an location of SFCL in a distribution network connected with DG(Distributed Generation). With case studies on method of determining optimal location for SFCL applied to a radial network and a mesh network respectively, we proved that the proposed method is feasible.

  • Distributed generation(DG) of combined cooling, heat, and power(CCHP)has been gaining momentum in recent year as efficient, secure alternative for meeting increasing energy demands. This paper presents the energy performance of microturbine CCHP system equipped with an absorption chiller by modelling it in hospital building. The orders of study were as following. 1)The list and schedule of energy consumption equipment in hospital were examined such as heating and cooling machine, light etc. 2) Annual report of energy usage and monitoring data were examined as heating, cooling, DHW, lighting, etc. 3) The weather data in 2007 was used for simulation and was arranged by meteorological office data in Daejeon. 4) Reference simulation model was built by comparison of real energy consumption and simulation result by TRNSYS and ESP-r. The energy consumption pattern of building were analyzed by simulation model and energy reduction rate were calculated over the cogeneration. As a result of this study, power generation efficiency of turbine was about 30[%] after installing micro gas turbine and lighting energy as well as total electricity consumption can be reduced by 40[%]. If electricity energy and waste heat in turbine are used, 56[%] of heating energy and 67[%] of cooling energy can be reduced respectively, and total system efficiency can be increased up to 70[%].

  • Grid-connected inverters (GCIs) with an LCL output filter have the ability of attenuating high-frequency (HF) switching ripples. However, by using only grid-current control, the system is prone to resonances if it is not properly damped, and the current distortion is amplified significantly under highly distorted grid conditions. This paper proposes a synchronous reference frame equivalent proportional-integral (SRF-EPI) controller in the αβ stationary frame using the parallel virtual resistance-based active damping (PVR-AD) strategy for grid-interfaced distributed generation (DG) systems to suppress LCL resonance. Although both a proportional-resonant (PR) controller in the αβ stationary frame and a PI controller in the dq synchronous frame achieve zero steady-state error, the amplitude- and phase-frequency characteristics differ greatly from each other except for the reference tracking at the fundamental frequency. Therefore, an accurate SRF-EPI controller in the αβ stationary frame is established to achieve precise tracking accuracy. Moreover, the robustness, the harmonic rejection capability, and the influence of the control delay are investigated by the Nyquist stability criterion when the PVR-based AD method is adopted. Furthermore, grid voltage feed-forward and multiple PR controllers are integrated into the current loop to mitigate the current distortion introduced by the grid background distortion. In addition, the parameters design guidelines are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the feasibility of the proposed control approach.

  • In recent years, Ulaanbaatar, a capital of Mongolia has witnessed major problem that air quality reaches hazardous level during the winter season. Coal combustion for heating of every house in "Ger" district is main reason. One way to reduce the air pollution is mass usage of electric heater. However, there are several difficulties such as overload and degradation of transformers and other equipment used in distribution and transmission systems as well as power shortage occurrence in evening peak period due to residential consumption. This study aims to contribute for solving the air pollution and power shortage problem in Mongolia. One possible solution could be distributed generation (DG) with photovoltaic (PV) penetration. In this study, PV with energy storage (ES) hybrid system to reduce peak load is analyzed. We proposed the suitable structure of PV-ES hybrid for Mongolian household, and suggested several operation scenarios. Optimal operation algorithm is carried out based on a comparison aspect from economical, grid impact and PV penetration possibility. The economic analyse shows annual income of 520USD, and has a payback period of 8 years for selected scenario. The proposed PV-ES system structure is verified by experimentation set on the building rooftop in city center. The suggested scenario is planned to apply for system in further research.

  • The power quality of Single Phase Grid-Connected Inverters (GCIs) has received much attention with the increasing number of Distributed Generation (DG) systems. However, the performance of single phase GCIs get degraded due to several factors such as the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effect, and the turn ON/OFF of the switches, which causes the harmonics at the output of GCIs. Therefore, it is not easy to satisfy the harmonic standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 without the help of harmonic compensator. To meet the harmonic standards a certain kind of harmonic controller needs to be added to the current control loop to effectively mitigate the low order harmonics. In this paper, the harmonic compensation is performed using a novel robust harmonic compensation method based on Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA). In the proposed technique, DLAs are used to extract the amplitude and phase information of the harmonics from the output current and compensate it by using a simple PI controller in the feedforward manner. In order to show the superior performance of the proposed harmonic compensation technique, it is compared with those of conventional harmonic compensation methods in terms of the effectiveness of harmonic elimination, complexity, and implementation. The validity of the proposed harmonic compensation techniques for the single phase GCIs is verified through the experimental results with a 5kW single phase GCI. Index Terms -Single Phase Grid Connected Inverter (SPGCI), Harmonic Compensation Method, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and Harmonic Standard.

  • Korea Ministry of Knowledge Economy has estimated that wind power (WP) will be occupied 37% in 2020 and 42% in 2030 of the new energy sources, and also green energies such as photovoltaic (PV) and WP are expected to be interconnected with the distribution system because of Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) starting from 2012. However, when a large scale wind power plant (over 3[MW]) is connected to the traditional distribution system, protective devices (mainly OCR and OCGR of re-closer) will be occurred mal-function problems due to changed fault currents it be caused by Wye-grounded/Delta winding of interconnection transformer and %impedance of WP's turbine. Therefore, when Double-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) of typical WP's Generator is connected into distribution system, this paper deals with analysis three-phase short, line to line short and a single line ground faults current by using the symmetrical components of fault analysis and PSCAD/EMTDC modeling.
